Documentation for the machine readable version of the Yale Catalogue of the Positions and Proper Motions of Stars between Declinations -60 deg and -70 deg (Fallon 1983)

The machine-readable, character-coded version of the catalog, as it is currently being distributed from the Astronomical Data Center(ADC), is described. The format and data provided in the magnetic tape version differ somewhat from those of the published catalog, which was also produced from a tape prepared at the ADC. The primary catalog data are positions and proper motions (equinox 1950.0) for 14597 stars.

Enrichments for phototrophic bacteria and characterization by morphology and pigment analysis

The purpose of this investigation was to examine several sulfide containing environments for the presence of phototrophic bacteria and to obtain enriched cultures of some of the bacteria present. The field sites were Alum Rock State Park, the Palo Alto salt marsh, the bay area salt ponds, and Big Soda Lake (near Fallon, Nevada). Bacteria from these sites were characterized by microscopic examination, measurement of in vitro absorption spectra, and analysis of carotenoid pigments. Field observations at one of the bay area salt ponds, in which the salt concentration was saturating (about 30 percent NaCl) and the sediments along the shore of the pond covered with a gypsum crust, revealed a layer of purple photosynthetic bacteria under a green layer in the gypsum crust. Samples of this gypsum crust were taken to the laboratory to measure light transmission through the crust and to try to identify the purple photosynthetic bacteria present in this extremely saline environment.

Engine investigation of an air-cooled turbine rotor blade incorporating impingement-cooled leading edge, chordwise passages, and a slotted trailing edge

Experimental temperatures are presented for an air-cooled turbine rotor blade tested in an engine. The data were obtained for turbine stator inlet temperatures from 2000 to 2500 F and for turbine-inlet gas pressures from 32 to 46 psia. Average and local blade heat-transfer data are correlated. Potential allowable increases in gas temperature are also discussed.

Contraction of the Orion Nebula cluster-molecular cloud A complex

Observational evidence is presented in support of the view that the width of the molecular lines in Orion is produced by a contraction of the cloud with a velocity directly proportional to the distance from the cloud center. The main support is provided by close agreement between the motions of the cloud and that of the stars embedded in it. A further implication of this agreement is that star formation occurred throughout the Orion cloud, rather than only in the dense center as predicted by the conventional picture of star formation.

Performance of ground attitude determination procedures for HEAO-1

Ground attitude support for HEAO 1 provided at GSFC by the HEAO 1 Attitude Ground Support System (AGSS) is described. Information telemetered from Sun sensors, gyroscopes, star trackers, and an onboard computer are used by the AGSS to compute updates to the onboard attitude reference and gyro calibration parameters. The onboard computer utilizes these updates in providing continuous attitudes (accurate to 0.25degree) for use in the observatory's attitude control procedures. The relationship between HEAO 1 onboard and ground processing, the procedures used by the AGSS in computing attitude and gyro calibration updates, and the performance of these procedures in the HEAO 1 postlaunch environment is discussed.

Ground attitude determination and gyro calibration procedures for the HEAO missions

The Attitude Ground Support System (AGSS) at Goddard Space Flight Center provides ground attitude support for the High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO) missions. The AGSS uses information telemetered from sun sensors, gyroscopes, star trackers (STAs), and an onboard computer to calculate updates to the onboard attitude reference and gyro calibration parameters. This paper presents the procedures used by the AGSS in computing reference and calibration updates; it also provides HEAO-1 postlaunch statistics that illustrate the ability to maintain 0.25-deg accuracy in the onboard attitude reference. Simulated HEAO-B results show an improvement in reference accuracy through the use of calibration maneuvers.

The uses of Man-Made diamond in wafering applications

The continuing, rapid growth of the semiconductor industry requires the involvement of several specialized industries in the development of special products geared toward the unique requirements of this new industry. A specialized manufactured diamond to meet various material removal needs was discussed. The area of silicon wafer slicing has presented yet anothr challenge and it is met most effectively. The history, operation, and performance of Man-Made diamond and particularly as applied to silicon wafer slicing is discussed. Product development is underway to come up with a diamond specifically for sawing silicon wafers on an electroplated blade.

Flutter: A finite element program for aerodynamic instability analysis of general shells of revolution with thermal prestress

Documentation for the computer program FLUTTER is presented. The theory of aerodynamic instability with thermal prestress is discussed. Theoretical aspects of the finite element matrices required in the aerodynamic instability analysis are also discussed. General organization of the computer program is explained, and instructions are then presented for the execution of the program.

Report of the Avian Development Working Group

The anteroposterior axis of the avian embryo is established before it is laid. Baer's rule states that the cephalic end of the avian embryo will be away from the observer when the pointed end of the shell is on the observer's right. There are experimental data available which indicate gravity has a role in the establishment of the anteroposterior axis while the egg is in the uterus; this results in Baer's rule. The influence of gravity on egg development is studied.

Low-Flammability PTFE for High-Oxygen Environments

Modified forming process removes volatile combustible materials. Flammability of cable-wrapping tape reduced by altering tape-manufacturing process. In new manufacturing process, tape formed by proprietary process of screw extrusion, followed by washing in solvent and drying. Tape then wrapped as before. Spectrogram taken after extrusion, washing, and drying shows lower hydrocarbon content. PTFE formed by new process suited to oxygen-rich environments. Safe in liquid oxygen of Space Shuttle tank and in medical uses; thin-wall shrinkable tubing in hospital test equipment, surgical instruments, and implants.

Checkpoint and restart procedures for single and multi-stage structural model analysis in NASTRAN/COSMIC on a CDC 176

The Underwater Explosions Research Division (UERD) of the David Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center makes extensive use of NASTRAN/COSMIC on a CDC 176 to evaluate the structural response of ship structures subjected to underwater explosion shock loadings in the time domain. As relatively new users, UERD engineers have experienced difficulties with the checkpoint/restart feature because of the vague instructions in the user manual. Working procedures for the application of the checkpoint/restart feature to the transient analysis using NASTRAN/COSMIC are illustrated.
