Materials Data on FePS3 by Materials Project

FePS3 crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/m space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of one FePS3 sheet oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction. Fe3+ is bonded to six S2- atoms to form edge-sharing FeS6 octahedra. There are a spread of Fe–S bond distances ranging from 2.51–2.53 Å. P3+ is bonded in a trigonal non-coplanar geometry to three S2- atoms. There are one shorter (2.04 Å) and two longer (2.05 Å) P–S bond lengths. There are two inequivalent S2- sites. In the first S2- site, S2- is bonded in a distorted trigonal non-coplanar geometry to two equivalent Fe3+ and one P3+ atom. In the second S2- site, S2- is bonded in a distorted trigonal non-coplanar geometry to two equivalent Fe3+ and one P3+ atom.

Atomically Resolved Acoustic Dynamics Coupled with Magnetic Order in a Van der Waals Antiferromagnet

Magnetoelastic coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials enables a unique interplay between the spin and lattice degrees of freedom. Characterizing the elastic responses with atomic and femtosecond resolution across the magnetic transition is essential for guiding the design of magnetically tunable actuators and strain-mediated spintronic devices. Here, ultrafast X-ray diffraction employed at a free-electron laser reveals that the atomic displacements, wave vectors, and dispersion relations of acoustic phonon modes in a vdW antiferromagnet FePS3 are coupled with the magnetic order, by tracking both in-plane and out-of-plane Bragg peaks upon optical excitation across the Néel temperature (TN). One transverse mode shows that a quasi-out-of-plane atomic displacement undergoes a significant directional change across TN. Its quasi-in-plane wave vector is derived by comparing the measured sound velocity and the first-principles calculations. The other transverse mode is an interlayer shear acoustic mode whose amplitude is strongly enhanced in the antiferromagnetic phase, exhibiting eight times stronger amplitude than the longitudinal acoustic mode below TN. The atomically resolved characterization of acoustic phonon dynamics that couple with magnetic ordering opens opportunities for harnessing unique magnetoelastic coupling in vdW magnets on ultrafast timescales.

Observation of Giant Optical Linear Dichroism in a Zigzag Antiferromagnet FePS 3

Direct optical probing of the antiferromagnetic order parameter in atomically thin samples is challenging, for example, via magneto-optical spectroscopy, due to the lack of net magnetization. Here, we report zigzag-antiferromagnetism (AFM) induced optical linear dichroism (LD) in layered transition-metal thiophosphate FePS3 down to the monolayer limit. The observed LD is giant despite having the optical wave vector parallel to the Neel vector. The LD is at least one order of magnitude larger than those reported in other antiferromagnetic systems, where the optical wave vector is orthogonal to the Neel vector. The large LD enables the probe of 60 degrees orientated zigzag-AFM domains. The optical anisotropy in FePS 3 originates from an electronic anisotropy associated with the zigzag direction of the AFM order and is independent of the spin-pointing direction. Furthermore, our findings point to a new optical approach for the investigation and control of zigzag or stripe magnetic order in strongly correlated systems.

Ultrafast Nanoimaging of Spin-Mediated Shear Waves in an Acoustic Cavity

Strong spin–lattice coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnets shows potential for innovative magneto-mechanical applications. Here, nanoscale and picosecond imaging by ultrafast electron microscopy reveal heterogeneous spin-mediated coherent acoustic phonon dynamics in a thin-film cavity of the vdW antiferromagnet FePS3. The harmonics of the interlayer shear acoustic modes are observed, in which the even and odd harmonics exhibit distinct nanoscopic dynamics. Corroborated by acoustic wave simulation, the role of defects in forming even harmonics is elucidated. Above the Néel temperature (T N ), the interlayer shear acoustic harmonics are suppressed, while the in-plane traveling wave is predominantly excited. The dominant acoustic dynamics shifts from the out-of-plane shear to the in-plane traveling wave across T N , demonstrating that magnetic properties can influence phonon scattering pathways. In conclusion, the spatiotemporally resolved structural characterization provides valuable nanoscopic insights for interlayer-shear-mode-based acoustic cavities, opening up possibilities for magneto-mechanical applications of vdW magnets.

Photoelectrochemical response of some layered chalcogenophosphate compounds /MPX3/

New photoelectrochemical results for the layered chalcogenophosphate compounds MPX3, FePS3, NiPS3, and SnPS3 are presented. The compounds were grown by iodine vapor transport in quartz ampules from a stoichiometric amount of the elements. Crystals of the layered type up to 10 mm x 10 mm x 0.1 mm were grown. The results of the layered compounds from the MPX3 series show good stability in acid solutions under photoelectrolysis condition. The relatively slow increase in the photocurrent with increasing electrode potential suggests high recombination rates for the photogenerated carriers in these layered materials. It is noted that improvements may be possible by, for example, optimizing the preparation of the crystals and the electrode surfaces.
