Optomechanical interaction in fibre lasers with micro-optomechanical resonance structures

We report the results of studies of fibre lasers with passive modulators based on light-excited micro-optomechanical resonance structures (micro-oscillators). It is shown that in fibre lasers based on active fibres doped with rare-earth elements (Er, Er/Yb, Yb, Nd), the optomechanical interaction of laser radiation with micro-oscillators of various types (fibre-optic, microvolume) leads to self-oscillations of the characteristics of laser radiation at frequencies of relaxation oscillations and intermode beats synchronised with the frequencies of elastic eigenoscillations of micro-oscillators. It is found that in an ultra-long erbium – ytterbium fibre laser with a nonlinear mirror based on a microcantilever, laser photothermal excitation of the second mode of elastic transverse oscillations of the microcantilever makes it possible to perform passive mode locking exclusively due to Q-switching of the laser cavity. Pulsed lasing with a controlled repetition rate (∼76 kHz), a pulse duration of 2 – 5 μs and an output energy of 0.1 μJ per pulse is implemented. Based on a simplified physical model of the indicated fibre lasers with micro-oscillators, we have developed an approximate mathematical model describing the regimes of passive mode locking of fibre lasers with micro-oscillators that play the role of mirrors with a nonlinear reflection coefficient in the laser cavity. The prospects for the development and application of the considered laser systems are discussed. (control of laser radiation parameters)

Output power saturation effect in Yb – Er fibre lasers

The output power saturation effect in Yb – Er fibre lasers is experimentally observed. A formula for estimating the saturation power is derived. A method is proposed for measuring the {sup 4}I{sub 11/2} level lifetime or the concentration of Er ions based on the measurements of the saturation power. (paper)

Radiofrequency synthesiser with an intrinsic instability of 5 × 10{sup −15} at the averaging time of 1 s based on a femtosecond erbium-doped fibre laser

A radio-optical synthesiser intended for operation in a radio-frequency master oscillator with an optical He – Ne/CH{sub 4} frequency standard (λ = 3.39 μm) is developed on the basis of a femtosecond erbium-doped fibre laser. The synthesiser generates equidistant harmonics in the frequency range of 1 – 10 GHz with stability determined by the optical frequency standard. A stable supercontinuum spectrum is formed in the range around 1.06 μm, which provides stable 24-hour operation of the synthesiser and is important for practical applications in off-laboratory conditions. A direct comparison of the output frequencies of two synthesisers shows that the up-grade of the fibre laser and detection system of femtosecond pulses results in the synthesiser intrinsic instability of 5 × 10{sup −15} at the averaging time of 1 s. Such a value is by an order of magnitude less than that obtained in our earlier works. (laser frequency standards)

Phasing of seven-channel fibre laser radiation with dynamic turbulent phase distortions using a stochastic parallel gradient algorithm at a bandwidth of 450 kHz

We have demonstrated an experimental setup for the coherent phasing of a seven-channel fibre laser system ( λ = 1064 nm) in a scheme comprising a master oscillator and a set of parallel amplifiers with lithium niobate-based fibre-optic phase modulators. Using a stochastic parallel gradient algorithm, an instrumental phase modulator control unit ensures a bandwidth of the system up to 450 kHz. The effectiveness of phasing of light transmitted through a turbulent medium with a characteristic time scale τ{sub turb} has been studied experimentally as a function of phasing time τ{sub ph}. The results demonstrate that the average Strehl ratio begins to rise at τ{sub turb}/τ{sub ph} ⩾ 2 and that the effectiveness of compensation for dynamic phase distortions in the beam propagation path rises sharply at τ{sub turb}/τ{sub ph} ≈ 20. For τ{sub turb}/τ{sub ph} ⩾ 30 – 40, the average Strehl ratio remains constant at the level reached. (control of laser radiation parameters)

Heat transfer in water under laser heating through fibres for endovenous laser coagulation

We report the results of studying heat transfer in water heated by a cw laser with wavelengths of 1.55 and 1.94 μm through optical fibres with end-face and radial outputs. It is shown that, depending on the power and wavelength of the radiation, heat transfer is implemented via convection, bubble boiling, or explosive boiling and occurs asymmetrically, mainly in the forward − upward direction for the fibre with the end-face output and upward for the radial output. Seven-core fibre Raman laser with intercore coupling

This paper reports results of a study aimed at producing a Raman fibre laser based on a multicore fibre with high-reflectivity fibre Bragg gratings inscribed in its peripheral cores using femtosecond laser pulses. We present spectral and power characteristics of a Raman laser whose output power at a wavelength of 1090 nm is 2.5 W. The laser emission linewidth has been shown to decrease as a result of the reduction in nonlinear effects owing to the larger effective mode area in the multicore fibre in comparison with a standard single-mode fibre Raman laser. Spectrally selective fundamental core mode suppression in optical fibre containing absorbing rods

The feasibility of making a wavelength-selective fibre filter using fibre with absorbing rods in its silica cladding has been demonstrated theoretically for the first time. The technique described in this paper is of great practical interest for designing fibre lasers and amplifiers emitting at wavelengths where lasing is impeded by the presence of more energetically favourable radiative transitions in the active medium. In addition, the approach proposed here can be used for stimulated Raman scattering suppression. The unique feature of the fundamental core mode suppression mechanism examined is that there is a (bending) controlled spectral width of a region where excess losses are produced. Turnkey locking of quantum-dot lasers directly grown on Si

Ultralow-noise laser sources are crucial for a variety of applications, including microwave synthesizers, optical gyroscopes and the manipulation of quantum systems. Silicon photonics has emerged as a promising solution for high-coherence applications due to its ability to reduce the system size, weight, power consumption and cost. Semiconductor lasers based on self-injection locking have achieved fibre laser coherence, but typically require a high-quality-factor external cavity to suppress coherence collapse through frequency-selective feedback. Lasers based on external-cavity locking are a low-cost and turnkey operation option, but their coherence is generally inferior to self-injection locking lasers. In this work, we demonstrate quantum-dot lasers grown directly on Si that achieve self-injection-locking laser coherence under turnkey external-cavity locking. The high-performance quantum-dot laser offers a scalable and low-cost heteroepitaxial integration platform. Moreover, the chaos-free nature of the quantum-dot laser enables a 16 Hz Lorentzian linewidth under external-cavity locking using a low-quality-factor external cavity, and improves the frequency noise by an additional order of magnitude compared with conventional quantum-well lasers.

KCG Baseline Air Pollution Station LIFSO2 v1 Data from December 2024 to March 2025

Sulfur Dioxide is a key precursor to the formation of new particles within the marine environment, yet commercial instrumentation lack sufficient precision or sensitivity to resolve the levels present in these environments. As such, the LIFSO2, a custom built fibre laser from the University of York, UK, was developed (based on the one developed by Rollins et al 2016). We are able to resolve down to the ppt level with this instrument. We present version 1 (v1) data for Dec 2024 to Mar 2025 for SO2 (1min time average) from the Cape-k precursors field campaign.

Integrated structured light architectures

Abstract The structural versatility of light underpins an outstanding collection of optical phenomena where both geometrical and topological states of light can dictate how matter will respond or display. Light possesses multiple degrees of freedom such as amplitude, and linear, spin angular, and orbital angular momenta, but the ability to adaptively engineer the spatio-temporal distribution of all these characteristics is primarily curtailed by technologies used to impose any desired structure to light. We demonstrate a laser architecture based on coherent beam combination offering integrated spatio-temporal field control and programmability, thereby presenting unique opportunities for generating light by design to exploit its topology.

Study of the second-order relativistic light deflection of the Sun using long-baseline fibre-linked interferometers: Laser-Interferometric Solar Relativity (LISOR) test

A propasal to study the second order light deflection in the solar gravitational field is presented. It is proposed to use 1 to 2 W frequency stabilized lasers on two microspacecraft about 0.25 degree apart in the sky with apparent positions near the Sun, and observe the relative angle of two spacecraft using ground based fiber linked interferometers with 10 km baseline to determine the second order relativistic light deflection effects. The first two years of work would emphasize the establishment of a prototype stabilized laser system and fiber linked interferometer. The first year, a prototype fiber linked interferometer would be set up to study the phase noise produced by external perturbations to fiber links. The second year, a second interferometer would be set up. The cancellation of phase drift due to fiber links of both interferometers in the same environment would be investigated.

Pump depletion in Raman lasing in a graded index multimode fibre

We examine multimode diode laser pump depletion in a graded index multimode (MM) fibre Raman laser generating a high-quality Stokes beam. Spatial ‘hole burning’ in the transmitted pump beam is demonstrated. A balance model is constructed for interaction of the pump and Stokes waves in the MM Raman laser. Analytical formulas are derived and used in calculations demonstrating qualitative agreement with experimental data. The origin of the observed quantitative discrepancies is discussed. (paper)

Synchronous pumping of picosecond dye laser using high efficiency second harmonic generation from optical fibres

The stable operation of a mode-locked dye laser synchronously pumped by the second harmonic of an Nd:YAG laser produced in an Nd codoped germanosilicate optical fiber is reported. The optical fiber preparation technique, which results in a second harmonic conversion efficiency of 2 percent, is described. This optical fiber SHG conversion efficiency is the highest reported to date using a continuous-wave mode-locked laser.

Scheme for stabilising the phase and arrival time of ultrashort laser pulses in a coherent beam combining fibre system

An algorithm has been demonstrated for simultaneously measuring the phase and arrival time of optical pulses relative to pulses in a reference channel using one detector array. Based on this algorithm, a simple optoelectronic pulse phase and arrival time stabilisation scheme has been designed for operation in a coherent beam combining fibre system for ultrashort pulses (including chirped ones). We have studied the performance of the stabilisation scheme. In particular, we have reached a phase measurement rate of 25 000 cps, demonstrated an ∼ 2 kHz limiting phase stabilisation frequency in a feedback loop, and obtained an arrival time measurement accuracy of ∼ 5 % of the transform-limited pulse duration at a measurement rate of 5 cps. In experiments concerned with coherent beam combining for two channels of a pulsed fibre system at a wavelength of 1030 nm, we have demonstrated phase stabilisation with an accuracy better than λ/100 and delay setting accuracy of 10 fs at a transform-limited pulse duration of ∼ 200 fs and obtained 94 % beam combining efficiency. Surface plasmon enhanced fast electron emission from metallised fibre optic nanotips

Physical mechanisms of electron emission from fibre optic nanotips, namely, tunnelling, multi-photon, and thermionic emission, either prevent fast switching or require intense laser fields. Time-resolved electron emission from nano-sized sources finds applications ranging from material characterisation to fundamental studies of quantum coherence. We present a nano-sized electron source capable of fast-switching (≤1 ns) that can be driven with low-power femtosecond lasers. The physical mechanism that can explain emission at low laser power is surface plasmon enhanced above-threshold photoemission. An electron emission peak is observed and provides support for resonant plasmonic excitation. The electron source is a metal-coated optical fibre tapered into a nano-sized tip. The fibre is flexible and back illuminated facilitating ease of positioning. The source operates with a few nJ per laser pulse, making this a versatile emitter that enables nanometrology, multisource electron-lithography and scanning probe microscopy.

Broadband fibre-pigtailed acousto-optic frequency shifter

A two-crystal fibre-pigtailed acousto-optic frequency shifter has been developed and investigated. An optimal configuration of acousto-optic cells is chosen. A two-crystal acousto-optic frequency shifter of 785-nm laser radiation in the range from 156 to 196 MHz, with single-mode polarisation maintaining fibres at the input and output, is described. Some recommendations are given how to improve the shifter transmission coefficient and increase the frequency shift range. (acousto-optic modulation of light)

Spatially resolved fibre cavity ring down spectroscopy

Abstract This paper presents a fibre cavity ring down spectroscopy probed by Rayleigh scattering optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), which provides spatial location of stimuli and improved signal to noise ratio for distributed sensing measurements. A section of optical fibre was integrated into an active fibre ring cavity with optical gain and interrogated by the OFDR system for 11 cycles with a single laser scan. Through the cavity ring down configuration, root-mean-squared (RMS) noise of distributed temperature and strain measurements was reduced to 6.9 mK and less than 0.1 με, respectively for 1-cm spatially resolved measurements. Our work shows that the active fibre cavity configuration can be combined with distributed fibre sensing schemes to achieve both high spatial resolution and high sensitivity measurements.
