Electroweak, QCD and flavour physics studies with ATLAS data from Run 2 of the LHC

A of precision measurements sensitive to electroweak, QCD and quark-flavour effects performed by the ATLAS Collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The measurements are predominantly performed on proton–proton ( p p ) collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV taken from 2015 to 2018, with an integrated luminosity of up to 140 fb−1, with some results based on p p and Pb+Pb data recorded at lower nucleon centre-of-mass energies. The results cover a wide range of topics, from strong production of particles at low energies and the spectroscopy of hadrons to perturbative QCD with hadronic jets and electroweak and strong production of single and multiple vector bosons. They provide precise measurements of fundamental constants and stringent tests of the Standard Model with unprecedented precision and in energy ranges never explored before. They are also used to explore the proton structure and to perform model-independent searches for new physics.

SMEFT ATLAS: The landscape beyond the Standard Model

The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) based on the unbroken gauge group SU(3) 𝐶 ⊗SU(2) 𝐿 ⊗U(1) 𝑌 and containing only particles of the Standard Model (SM) has developed in the last decade to a mature field. It is the framework to be used in the energy gap from scales sufficiently higher than the electroweak scale up to the lowest energy scale at which new particles show up. We summarize the present status of this theory with a particular emphasize on its role in the indirect search for new physics (NP). While flavour physics of both quarks and leptons is the main topic of our review, we also discuss electric dipole moments, anomalous magnetic moments (𝑔−2) 𝜇,𝑒 , 𝑍-pole observables, Higgs observables and high-𝑝𝑇 scattering processes within the SMEFT. We group the observables into ten classes and list for each class the most relevant operators and the corresponding renormalization group equations (RGEs). We exhibit the correlations between different classes implied both by the operator mixing and the SU(2) 𝐿 gauge symmetry. Our main goal is to provide an insight into the complicated operator structure of this framework which hopefully will facilitate the identification of valid ultraviolet completions behind possible anomalies observed in future data. Numerous colourful charts, and 85 tables, while representing rather complicated RG evolution from the NP scale down to the electroweak scale, beautify the involved SMEFT landscape. Over 1000 references to the literature underline the importance and the popularity of this field. We discuss both top-down and bottom-up approaches as well as their interplay. This allows us eventually to present an atlas of different landscapes beyond the SM that includes heavy gauge bosons and scalars, vector-like quarks and leptons and leptoquarks.

The Belle II Physics Book

The Belle II-Theory interface Platform (B2TiP) was created as a physics prospects working group of the Belle II collaboration in June 2014. It offered a platform where theorists and experimentalists work together to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, τ, quarkonium physics, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theory and experiment conveners: WG1) Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, WG2) Radiative and Electroweak penguins, WG3) φ1 and φ2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, WG4) φ3 measurement, WG5) Charmless hadronic B decay, WG6) Charm, WG7) Quarkonium(like), WG8) τ and lowmultiplicity processes, WG9) New Physics. We organised workshops twice a year from 2014 until 2016, which moved from KEK in Japan to Europe and the Americas, gathering experts in the respective fields to discuss with Belle II members. One of the goals for B2TiP was to propose so-called “golden- and silver-channels”: we asked each working group to choose among numerous possible measurements, those that would have the highest potential impact and to focus on them for the writeup. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements in terms of understanding the theory behind them, and estimated the theoretical uncertainties, now achievable as well as prospects for the future. For flavour physics, having tight control of hadronic uncertainties is one of the most crucial aspects in the field, and this is considered as an important criteria to determine the golden or silver-channels. Experimentalists, on the other hand, investigated the expected improvements with data from Belle II. For the channels where the errors are dominated by statistical uncertainties, or where systematic errors are reducible, the errors can decrease rapidly as more data becomes available. The impact of the upgraded performance from Belle II is a crucial element for reducing the uncertainties: we therefore include the latest available studies of the detector efficiency using Monte Carlo simulated events. We list the golden(silver)-channel table in this first chapter, as a guide for the chapters that follow. The book is not a collection of reports based on talks given at the workshops. The working group conveners endeavoured to construct a coherent document that can be used by Belle II collaborators, and others in the field of flavour physics, as a reference. There were two books of a similar type written in the past, “The BaBar book” [1] and “The Physics of the B factories” [2]. In order to avoid too much repetition with respect to those references, we refer to them as possible for introductory material. We would like to thank the section editors and contributing authors for the many stimulating discussions and their tremendous effort to bring the book together.

Measurement of CP asymmetries in ${D}_{(s)}^{+}\to \eta {\pi}^{+}$ and ${D}_{(s)}^{+}\to {\eta}^{\prime }{\pi}^{+}$ decays

Searches for CP violation in the decays ${D}_{(s)}^{+}\to \eta {\pi}^{+}$ and ${D}_{(s)}^{+}\to {\eta}^{\prime }{\pi}^{+}$ are performed using pp collision data corresponding to 6 fb –1 of integrated luminosity collected by the LHCb experiment. The calibration channels ${D}_{(s)}^{+}\to \phi {\pi}^{+}$ are used to remove production and detection asymmetries. The resulting CP-violating asymmetries are $\mathcal{A}^{CP} = (D^+ \to ηπ^+) = (0.34 ± 0.66 ± 0.16 ± 0.05)$ %, $\mathcal{A}^{CP} = (D^+_s \to ηπ^+) = (0.32 ± 0.51 ± 0.12)$ %, $\mathcal{A}^{CP} = (D^+ \to η'π^+) = (0.49 ± 0.18 ± 0.06 ± 0.05)$ %, $\mathcal{A}^{CP} = (D^+_s \to η'π^+) = (0.01 ± 0.12 ± 0.08)$ %, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third, relevant for the D + channels, is due to the uncertainty on ${\mathcal{A}}^{CP}=\left({D}^{+}\to \phi {\pi}^{+}\right)$. These measurements, currently the most precise for three of the four channels considered, are consistent with the absence of CP violation. A combination of these results with previous LHCb measurements is presented.

Proton decay: flipped vs. unflipped SU(5)

We analyze nucleon decay modes in a no-scale supersymmetric flipped SU(5) GUT model, and contrast them with the predictions for proton decays via dimension-6 operators in a standard unflipped supersymmetric SU(5) GUT model. We find that these GUT models make very different predictions for the ratios Γ(p → π 0 µ + )/Γ(p → π 0 e + ), Γ(p → π + ν - )/Γ(p → π 0 e + ), Γ(p → K 0 e + )/Γ(p → π 0 e + ) and Γ(p → K 0 µ + )/Γ(p → π 0 µ + ), and that predictions for the ratios Γ(p → π 0 µ + )/Γ(p → π 0 e + ) and Γ(p → π + ν - )/Γ(p → π 0 e + ) also differ in variants of the flipped SU(5) model with normal- or inverse-ordered light neutrino masses. Upcoming large neutrino experiments may have interesting opportunities to explore both GUT and flavour physics in proton and neutron decays.

Observation of the doubly charmed baryon decay $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ →$Ξ_c^{'+}π^+$

The $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ →$Ξ_c^{'+}π^+$ decay is observed using proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb –1 . The $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ →$Ξ_c^{'+}π^+$ decay is reconstructed partially, where the photon from the $Ξ_c^{'+}$ →$Ξ^+_cγ$ decay is not reconstructed and the $ρK^-π^+$ final state of the $Ξ^+_c$ baryon is employed. The $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ →$Ξ_c^{'+}π^+$ branching fraction relative to that of the $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ →$Ξ_c^+π^+$ decay is measured to be 1.41 ± 0.17 ± 0.10, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Searches for 25 rare and forbidden decays of D + and ${D}_s^{+}$ mesons

A search is performed for rare and forbidden charm decays of the form ${D}_{(s)}^{+}\to {h}^{\pm }{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{\left(\prime \right)\mp } $, where h ± is a pion or kaon and ℓ (')± is an electron or muon. The measurements are performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb –1 , collected by the LHCb experiment in 2016. No evidence is observed for the 25 decay modes that are investigated and 90 % confidence level limits on the branching fractions are set between 1.4 × 10 –8 and 6.4 × 10 –6 . In most cases, these results represent an improvement on existing limits by one to two orders of magnitude.

Search for CP violation in ${D}_{(s)}^{+}$ → K - K + K + decays

A search for direct CP violation in the Cabibbo-suppressed decay \( {D}_s^{+} \) → K - K + K + and in the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay D + → K - K + K + is reported. The analysis is performed with data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb - 1 . The search is conducted by comparing the \( {D}_{(s)}^{+} \) and \( {D}_{(s)}^{-} \) Dalitz-plot distributions through a model-independent binned technique, based on fits to the K - K + K + invariant-mass distributions, with a total of 0.97 (1.27) million \( {D}_s^{+} \) ( D + ) signal candidates. The results are given as p -values for the hypothesis of CP conservation and are found to be 13.3% for the \( {D}_s^{+} \) → K - K + K + decay and 31.6% for the D + → K - K + K + decay. No evidence for CP violation is observed in these decays.

${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ polarimetry using the dominant hadronic mode

The polarimeter vector field for multibody decays of a spin-half baryon is intro duced as a generalisation of the baryon asymmetry parameters. Using a recent amplitude analysis of the ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → $pK^-π^+$ decay performed at the LHCb experiment, we compute the distribution of the kinematic-dependent polarimeter vector for this process in the space of Mandelstam variables to express the polarised decay rate in a model-agnostic form. The obtained representation can facilitate polarisation measurements of the ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ baryon and eases inclusion of the ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → $pK^-π^+$ decay mode in hadronic amplitude analyses.

Indirect constraints on third generation baryon number violation

Abstract The non-observation of baryon number violation suggests that the scale of baryon-number violating interactions at zero temperature is comparable to the GUT scale. However, the pertinent measurements involve hadrons made of the first-generation quarks, such as protons and neutrons. One may therefore entertain the idea that new flavour physics breaks baryon number at a much lower scale, but only in the coupling to a third generation quark, leading to observable baryon-number violatingb-hadron decay rates. In this paper we show that indirect constraints on the new physics scale Λ BNV from the existing bounds on the proton lifetime do not allow for this possibility. For this purpose we consider the three dominant proton decay channelsp→$$ {\ell}^{+}{\nu}_{\ell}\overline{\nu} $$ ℓ + ν ℓ ν ¯ ,p→$$ {\pi}^{+}\overline{\nu} $$ π + ν ¯ andp→π 0 ℓ + mediated by a virtual bottom quark.

Phenomenology of inclusive $ \overline{B}\to {X}_s{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{-} $ for the Belle II era

With the first data being recorded at Belle II, we are at the brink of a new era in quark flavour physics. The many exciting new opportunities for Belle II include a full angular analysis of inclusive B ¯ → X s ℓ + ℓ - which has the potential to reveal new physics, in particular by its interplay with the exclusive b → s ℓ + ℓ - counterparts studied extensively at LHCb. In this paper, we present fully updated Standard Model predictions for all angular observables necessary for this endeavour. These predictions are tailored to Belle II and include an elaborate study of the treatment of collinear photons which become crucial when aiming for the highest precision. In addition, we present a phenomenological study of the potential for Belle II to reveal possible new physics in the inclusive decay channel, both in an independent manner and in combination with exclusive modes.

Measurement of branching fractions of ${\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+}$ decays to Σ⁺K⁺K⁻, Σ⁺Φ and Σ⁺K⁺π⁻(π 0 )
