Uncovering the truth about M101, NGC 3938, and their significant others through radiative transfer

ABSTRACT Solving the inverse problem in spiral galaxies, that allows the derivation of the spatial distribution of dust, gas, and stars, together with their associated physical properties, directly from panchromatic imaging observations, is one of the main goals of this work. To this end, we used radiative transfer models to decode the spatial and spectral distributions of the nearby face-on galaxies M101 and NGC 3938. In both cases, we provide excellent fits to the surface-brightness distributions derived from GALEX, SDSS, 2MASS, Spitzer, and Herschel imaging observations. Together with previous results from M33, NGC 628, M51, and the Milky Way, we obtain a small statistical sample of modelled nearby galaxies that we analyse in this work. We find that in all cases Milky Way-type dust with Draine-like optical properties provide consistent and successful solutions. We do not find any ‘submm excess’, and no need for modified dust-grain properties. Intrinsic fundamental quantities like star-formation rates (SFR), specific SFR (sSFR), dust opacities, and attenuations are derived as a function of position in the galaxy and overall trends are discussed. In the SFR surface density versus stellar mass surface density space, we find a structurally resolved relation (SRR) for the morphological components of our galaxies, that is steeper than the main sequence (MS). Exception to this is for NGC 628, where the SRR is parallel to the MS.

The Mantis Shrimp Dataset

The Mantis Shrimp Dataset (MSD) is a combination of matched cutouts of galaxies with known redshift in the ultra-violet, optical, and infrared wavelengths. MSD redshifts come from ''high-quality'' (as reported by the spectroscopic experiment) redshift measurements from a variety of spectroscopic surveys, including: SDSS, DESI early release, DEEP2, GAMA, VVDS, VIPERS, 6dF, and WiggleZ. Each redshift is accompanies with astrometry (ra,dec) pairs that were used to query cutout image services from PanSTARRs, UnWISE, and GALEX servers. The main data products are image vectors of these cutouts accompanied by the redshift value to be used to train computer vision networks on the supervised photometric redshift task. We also provide extinction values pre-queried at each galaxies' astrometry from the PLANCK and SFD dutstmaps, the SDSS MGS photometric redshift from Beck 2014 (if available) and the WISE x PS1 STRM photometric redshift for the galaxy (if available).

Three Quenched, Faint Dwarf Galaxies in the Direction of NGC 300: New Probes of Reionization and Internal Feedback

We report the discovery of three faint and ultra-faint dwarf galaxies -- Sculptor A, Sculptor B and Sculptor C -- in the direction of NGC 300 (D=2.0 Mpc), a Large Magellanic Cloud-mass galaxy. Deep ground-based imaging with Gemini/GMOS resolves all three dwarf galaxies into stars, each displaying a red giant branch indicative of an old, metal-poor stellar population. No young stars or HI gas are apparent, and the lack of a GALEX UV detection suggests that all three systems are quenched. Sculptor C (D=2.04$^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$ Mpc; $M_V=-9.1\pm 0.1$ mag or $L_V=(3.7^{+0.4}_{-0.3})\times 10^5L_{\odot})$ is consistent with being a satellite of NGC 300. Sculptor A (D=1.35$^{+0.22}_{-0.08}$ Mpc; $M_V=-6.9\pm 0.3$ mag or $L_V=(5^{+1}_{-1})\times 10^4 L_{\odot})$ is likely in the foreground of NGC 300 and at the extreme edge of the Local Group, analogous to the recently discovered ultra-faint Tucana B in terms of its physical properties and environment. Sculptor B (D=2.48$^{+0.21}_{-0.24}$ Mpc; $M_V=-8.1\pm 0.3$ mag or $L_V=(1.5^{+0.5}_{-0.4})\times 10^5L_{\odot})$ is likely in the background, but future distance measurements are necessary to solidify this statement. It is also of interest due to its quiescent state and low stellar mass. Both Sculptor A and B are $\gtrsim 2-4 r_{vir}$ from NGC 300 itself. The discovery of three dwarf galaxies in isolated or low-density environments offers an opportunity to study the varying effects of ram pressure stripping, reionization and internal feedback in influencing the star formation history of the faintest stellar systems.
