Field Test and Thermal Performance Comparison of a Novel Underground Thermal Battery with a Single U-tube Borehole Heat Exchanger for Geothermal Heat Pump Application

Geothermal Heat Pumps (GHP) are a proven technology to electrify and decarbonize space heating and cooling by utilizing the thermally consistent underground as a heat sink or source. However, the high drilling costs of conventional borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) associated with GHP systems and subsurface heterogeneity have been two major challenges to their widespread adoption. In this paper, we present results from a field-scale pilot of an Underground Thermal Battery (UTB) as a potential alternative to a conventional BHE. To benchmark the UTB performance, a side-by-side field test was conducted to compare the UTB with a conventional BHE installed at the same site. The UTB was installed in a 7.01-meter-deep borehole having a diameter of 0.9 meter, whereas the conventional BHE (with single U-tube loop) is in a borehole with 36.6-meter depth and 0.15-meter diameter. Both are integrated into a GHP system to meet the thermal energy demands of office space at the Illinois Energy Farm on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. The system’s performance is compared in terms of heat transfer rate, outlet temperatures, and contributions to the overall thermal power of the GHP system under varying thermal demands and in different heat pump operation modes: heating only, cooling only, and hybrid (alternative, diurnal heating and cooling). Results to date indicate that the UTB delivers a more consistent response under during a time period of varying thermal demands. Its operational performance is better during short-term with higher thermal demands, while the conventional BHE performs better under continuous, long-term thermal demands.

An analysis of Potential Benefits of Adding Diurnal Thermal Storage in Geothermal Heat Pump Systems

Geothermal heat pumps (GHP) are highly efficient for space heating and cooling, utilizing the subsurface of the ground as seasonal energy storage through borehole heat exchangers (i.e., heat stored in summer is used to provide heating in winter, and cold stored in winter is used to provide cooling in summer). On the other hand, diurnal thermal energy storage can actively be charged and discharged for load shifting. Conventional thermal energy storage uses tanks filled with thermal storage media (such as phase change materials) and heat exchangers. It occupies building floor space or land areas outside the building, which may not be available especially in residential buildings. This paper will introduce a novel configuration that can utilize existing GHP system for both diurnal and seasonal thermal storage. This system can actively charge the ground on daily basis by injecting heat or cold in borehole heat exchangers. A simulation model was created for the novel configuration. Computer simulations were conducted using the model for the new GHP system serving a typical single-family house in three U.S. cities representing hot, warm, and cold climates. Based on simulation results, the potential benefits of load shifting and downsize of the expensive ground heat exchangers used by the GHP system were assessed.

Development of a Sizing and Modeling Platform for District Energy Systems with Geothermal Heat Pumps

Existing tools for community or urban scale energy system modeling and simulation are often limited in their capabilities and require expert-level modeling proficiency to develop system models. To fill this gap, this paper proposes an integrated sizing and modeling platform for district energy systems with geothermal heat pumps. The proposed platform takes in geometric and non-geometric user inputs related to the buildings, borefield, and district energy loop. Then, the platform sizes the geothermal heat exchanger, generates a corresponding district energy system model, and runs an annual simulation automatically. We validated the simulation performance of the borefield in our tool against EnergyPlus. A case study is provided in this paper to demonstrate the workflow and simulation result plausibility of the proposed platform.

Geothermal Heat Pump System Showcase: Short-Term Validation of Borehole Heat Exchanger Performance from Field Data to Numerical Modeling: Preprint

Since 2011, a geothermal heat pump (GHP) system has been operating to provide space heating and cooling for the Solar Radiation and Research Laboratory building at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) in Golden, Colorado. The system consists of 23 vertical boreholes, each extending to a depth of 300 ft (91 m), connected to 11 water-to-air heat pump units and four circulation pumps. Between fiscal years 2023 and 2025, additional power meters and temperature sensors were retrofitted to support detailed system performance assessment and model development. This study presents preliminary monitoring results and the development of an initial numerical model of the borehole heat exchanger field. The model incorporated site-specific geometry, ground thermal properties derived from thermal response tests, and ambient temperatures, and simulated system behavior over a representative operating day in September. Model predictions of outlet temperatures were compared against corresponding field measurements. Results showed that modeling initialized with a simplified linear subsurface temperature gradient presents systematic discrepancies in outlet temperature, whereas incorporating depth-resolved borehole temperature measurements for initialization yields substantially improved agreement with observations. The findings highlight the sensitivity of short-term predictive modeling to the representation of initial subsurface thermal conditions and underscore the value of high-resolution field measurements for model calibration and validation. These preliminary results inform ongoing efforts to extend the modeling framework to longer time horizons and to refine monitoring and modeling strategies that support the design guidance and operational optimization of GHP systems in research and commercial buildings.
