Materials Data on GdRh by Materials Project

GdRh is Tetraauricupride structured and crystallizes in the cubic Pm-3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Gd is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to eight equivalent Rh atoms. All Gd–Rh bond lengths are 3.01 Å. Rh is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to eight equivalent Gd atoms.

Temperature-dependent magnetic-field-induced ab -plane Gd spin reorientations in antiferromagnetic domains in a single crystal of the tetragonal A-type antiferromagnet GdRh 2 Si 2

The compound GdRh 2 Si 2 crystallizes in the body-centered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure and exhibits A-type antiferromagnetic order below its Néel temperature T N = 107 K where the Gd moments are ferromagnetically aligned in the ab-plane with the moments in adjacent planes aligned antiferromagnetically. Previously, the nonlinear low-field magnetization versus field M ab ( H ∥ [1, 0, 0]) measurements on single crystals were interpreted in terms of a mean-field model. Here, in this work, we reinterpret this nonlinearity more simply in terms of the response of the ordered moments in four noninteracting tetragonal domains to the applied field and find good agreement with our theory.

Instability and evolution of the magnetic ground state in metallic perovskites GdRh 3 C 1-x B x

In this paper, we report investigations of the structural, magnetic, electrical transport and thermal properties of five compositions of the metallic perovskite GdRh 3 C 1–x B x (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 1.00). Our results show that all the five compositions undergo magnetic ordering at low temperatures, but the nature of the ordered state is significantly different in the carbon- and the boron-rich compositions, where the former shows signatures of an amplitude-modulated magnetic structure and the latter exhibits evidences of an equal-moment incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering. We also observe a remarkable field-dependent evolution of conduction carrier polarization in the compositionally disordered compounds. The outcomes indicate that this system is energetically situated in proximity to a magnetic instability where small variations in the control parameter(s), such as lattice constant and/or electron density, lead to considerably different ground states.

Regenerator performance in a Vuilleumier refrigerator compared with a third-order numerical model

A three-stage Vuilleumier refrigerator was used to measure the performance of various third stage regenerators. The refrigerator operates between 2.5 and 5.0 Hz and, depending on the material used in the third stage regenerator, achieves temperatures of 8 to 20 K at the cold end of the third stage. This paper presents a comparison of regenerator performance for four regenerator materials: 229 micron diameter spheres of Pb(+)5 pct Sb, 229 micron diameter spheres of brass, 216 micron irregularly-shaped GdRh powder, and a mixture of 229 microns and 762 microns diameter spheres of Pb(+5) pct Sb. The experimental results are compared with a first-order model that neglects the void volume within the regenerator and with a third-order model that considers the effect of pressure oscillations in the regenerator void volume. Experimental results indicate that regenerator losses are dominated by the pressure oscillation in the void volume rather than the mass flow through the temperature gradient in the regenerator. These results are consistent with the third-order numerical model. This model shows that the heat capacity of the gas in the void space as well as the heat capacity of the matrix influences the regenerator performance.
