Measurements of e p → e ' π + π – p ' cross sections with CLAS at 1.40 GeV < W < 2.0 GeV and 2.0 GeV 2 < Q 2 < 5.0 GeV 2

This study reports new exclusive cross sections for ep→e'π + π – p' using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. These results are presented for the first time at photon virtualities 2.0 GeV 2 < Q 2 < 5.0 GeV 2 in the center-of-mass energy range 1.4 GeV < W < 2.0 GeV, which covers a large part of the nucleon resonance region. Using a model developed for the phenomenological analysis of electroproduction data, we see strong indications that the relative contributions from the resonant cross sections at W < 1.74 GeV increase with Q 2 . These data considerably extend the kinematic reach of previous measurements. Exclusive ep→e'π + π – p' cross section measurements are of particular importance for the extraction of resonance electrocouplings in the mass range above 1.6 GeV.

Measurements of the γ v p → p ' π + π - cross section with the CLAS detector for 0.4 GeV 2 < Q 2 < 1.0 GeV 2 and 1.3 GeV < W < 1.825 GeV

New results on the single-differential and fully-integrated cross sections for the process $\gamma_{v} p \rightarrow p' \pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ are presented. The experimental data were collected with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. Measurements were carried out in the kinematic region of the reaction invariant mass $W$ from 1.3 to 1.825 GeV and the photon virtuality $Q^2$ from 0.4 to 1.0~GeV$^2$. The cross sections were obtained in narrow $Q^{2}$ bins (0.05 GeV$^{2}$) with the smallest statistical uncertainties achieved in double-pion electroproduction experiments to date. The results were found to be in agreement with previously available data where they overlap. A preliminary interpretation of the extracted cross sections, which was based on a phenomenological meson-baryon reaction model, revealed substantial relative contributions from nucleon resonances. The data offer promising prospects to improve knowledge on the $Q^{2}$ evolution of the electrocouplings of most resonances with masses up to $\sim$1.8~GeV.

Directional searches at DUNE for sub-GeV monoenergetic neutrinos arising from dark matter annihilation in the Sun

Here, we consider the use of directionality in the search for monoenergetic sub-GeV neutrinos arising from the decay of stopped kaons, which can be produced by dark matter annihilation in the core of the Sun. When these neutrinos undergo charged-current interactions with a nucleus at a neutrino detector, they often eject a proton which is highly peaked in the forward direction. The direction of this track can be measured at DUNE, allowing one to distinguish signal from background by comparing on-source and off-source event rates. We discover that directional information can enhance the signal to background ratio by up to a factor of 5.

PHENIX Measurement of B → J/ ψ in Cu+Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV and in p + p collisions at 200 GeV and 510 GeV

This study is part of the RHIC program to probe properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma medium properties using heavy quark energy loss. Part of the control of these measurements is to understand initial production of heavy quarks and how initial conditions in nucleus collisions can alter their yields. This manuscript reports the effort made by the PHENIX collaboration to measure total B-mesons yields, by looking at the fraction of muons from non-prompt J/ψ decays at displaced vertices in p+p and Cu+Au collisions. The total cross-sections of b-quarks in 200 GeV and 510 GeV p+p collisions follow the increasing trend from fixed target experiments to high energy results from the Tevatron and the LHC. Integrated pT and centrality B-meson yields in Cu+Au integrated over transverse momentum and centrality are consistent with no nuclear modification or some enhancement, in contrast to prompt J/ψ which shows a strong suppression

Polarized Structure Function {sigma}LT from {pi}0 p Electroproduction Data in the Resonance Region at 0.4 GeV2 < Q2 < 1.0 GeV2

The first results on the sigma(LT') structure function in exclusive pi(0)p electroproduction at invariant masses of the final state of 1.5 GeV < W < 1.8 GeV and in the range of photon virtualities 0.4 GeV2 < Q(2) < 1.0 GeV2 were obtained from data on beam spin asymmetries and differential cross sections measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The Legendre moments determined from the sigma(LT') structure function have demonstrated sensitivity to the contributions from the nucleon resonances in the second and third resonance regions. These new data on the beam spin asymmetries in pi(0)p electroproduction extend the opportunities for the extraction of the nucleon resonance electro-excitation amplitudes in the mass range above 1.6 GeV.

The Fermi Galactic Center GeV excess and implications for dark matter

Here, the region around the Galactic Center (GC) is now well established to be brighter at energies of a few GeV than what is expected from conventional models of diffuse gamma-ray emission and catalogs of known gamma-ray sources. We study the GeV excess using 6.5 yr of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We characterize the uncertainty of the GC excess spectrum and morphology due to uncertainties in cosmic-ray source distributions and propagation, uncertainties in the distribution of interstellar gas in the Milky Way, and uncertainties due to a potential contribution from the Fermi bubbles. We also evaluate uncertainties in the excess properties due to resolved point sources of gamma rays. The GC is of particular interest, as it would be expected to have the brightest signal from annihilation of weakly interacting massive dark matter (DM) particles. However, control regions along the Galactic plane, where a DM signal is not expected, show excesses of similar amplitude relative to the local background. Furthermore, based on the magnitude of the systematic uncertainties, we conservatively report upper limits for the annihilation cross-section as a function of particle mass and annihilation channel.

Heavy ion collisions from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ of 62.4 GeV down to 7.7 GeV in the EPOS4 framework

The EPOS4 project is an attempt to construct a realistic model for describing relativistic collisions of different systems, from proton-proton (𝑝⁢𝑝) to nucleus-nucleus (𝐴⁢𝐴), at energies from several TeV per nucleon down to several GeV. We argue that a parallel scattering formalism (as in EPOS4) is relevant for primary scatterings in 𝐴⁢𝐴 collisions above 4 GeV, whereas sequential scattering (cascade) is appropriate below. We present briefly the basic elements of EPOS4, and then investigate heavy ion collisions from 62.4 GeV down to 7.7 GeV, to understand how physics changes with energy, studying in particular the disappearance of the fluid component at low energies.

Cross sections of 𝜂 mesons in 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions at forward rapidity at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 500 GeV and central rapidity at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 510 GeV

We present the first measurements of the forward and midrapidity 𝜂-meson cross sections from 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 500 and 510 GeV, respectively. We also report the midrapidity 𝜂/𝜋 0 ratio at 510 GeV. The forward cross section is measured differentially in 𝜂-meson transverse momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) from 1.0 to 6.5 GeV/𝑐 for pseudorapidity 3.0 < |𝜂| < 3.8. The midrapidity cross section is measured from 3.5 to 44 GeV/𝑐 for pseudorapidity |𝜂| < 0.35. Both cross sections serve as critical inputs to an updated global analysis of the 𝜂-meson fragmentation functions.

Exclusive π 0 p electroproduction off protons in the resonance region at photon virtualities 0.4 GeV 2 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 1 GeV 2

The limited electroproduction process e p → e ' p ' π 0 was measured in the range of photon virtualities Q 2 = 0.4 – 1.0 GeV 2 and the invariant mass range of the p π 0 system of W = 1.1 – 1.8 GeV. These kinematics are covered in exclusive π 0 electroproduction off the proton with nearly complete angular coverage in the p π 0 center-of-mass system and with high statistical accuracy. Nearly 36 000 cross-section points were measured, and the structure functions σ T + ε σ L , σ L T , and σ T T , were extracted via fitting the φ π 0 dependence of the cross section. A Legendre polynomial expansion analysis demonstrates the sensitivity of our data to high-lying N * and Δ * resonances with M > 1.6 GeV. As part of a broad effort to determine the electrocouplings of the N * and Δ * resonances using both single- and double-pion electroproduction, this dataset is key for the reliable extraction of the high-lying resonance electrocouplings from the combined isospin analysis of the N π and π + π - p channels.

Measurements of Multiparticle Correlations in d + Au Collisions at 200, 62.4, 39, and 19.6 GeV and p + Au Collisions at 200 GeV and Implications for Collective Behavior

Recently, multiparticle-correlation measurements of relativistic p/d/ 3 He + Au, p + Pb, and even p + p collisions show surprising collective signatures. In this paper, we present beam-energy-scan measurements of two-, four-, and six-particle angular correlations in d + Au collisions at √ s NN = 200, 62.4, 39, and 19.6 GeV. We also present measurements of two- and four-particle angular correlations in p + Au collisions at √ s NN = 200 GeV. We find the four-particle cumulant to be real valued for d + Au collisions at all four energies. We also find that the four-particle cumulant in p + Au has the opposite sign as that in d + Au. Further, we find that the six-particle cumulant agrees with the four-particle cumulant in d + Au collisions at 200 GeV, indicating that nonflow effects are subdominant. Finally, these observations provide strong evidence that the correlations originate from the initial geometric configuration, which is then translated into the momentum distribution for all particles, commonly referred to as collectivity.

Petawatt Laser Guiding and Electron Beam Acceleration to 8 GeV in a Laser-Heated Capillary Discharge Waveguide.

Guiding of relativistically intense laser pulses with peak power of 0.85 PW over 15 diffraction lengths was demonstrated by increasing the focusing strength of a capillary discharge waveguide using laser inverse bremsstrahlung heating. This allowed for the production of electron beams with quasimonoenergetic peaks up to 7.8 GeV, double the energy that was previously demonstrated. Charge was 5 pC at 7.8 GeV and up to 62 pC in 6 GeV peaks, and typical beam divergence was 0.2 mrad.

Search for Extended Sources in the Galactic Plane Using Six Years of Fermi -Large Area Telescope Pass 8 Data above 10 GeV

The spatial extension of a γ -ray source is an essential ingredient to determine its spectral properties, as well as its potential multiwavelength counterpart. The capability to spatially resolve γ -ray sources is greatly improved by the newly delivered Fermi -Large Area Telescope (LAT) Pass 8 event-level analysis, which provides a greater acceptance and an improved point-spread function, two crucial factors for the detection of extended sources. Here, we present a complete search for extended sources located within 7° from the Galactic plane, using 6 yr of Fermi -LAT data above 10 GeV. We find 46 extended sources and provide their morphological and spectral characteristics. This constitutes the first catalog of hard Fermi -LAT extended sources, named the Fermi Galactic Extended Source Catalog, which allows a thorough study of the properties of the Galactic plane in the sub-TeV domain.

Measurement of $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to p{K}^{-}\overline{\Lambda}+c.c. $$ cross sections between 4.009 GeV and 4.951 GeV

Abstract Usinge + e − collision datasets corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 21.7 fb −1 collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.009 GeV to 4.951 GeV, the energy-dependent cross sections of$$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to p{K}^{-}\overline{\Lambda}+c.c. $$ e + e − → p K − Λ ¯ + c . c . are measured for the first time. By fitting these energy-dependent cross sections, we search for the excitedψstatesψ(4160) andψ(4415), and the vector charmonium-like statesψ(4230),ψ(4360), andψ(4660). No evidence for these is observed and the upper limits on the branching fractions of these states decaying into$$ p{K}^{-}\overline{\Lambda}+c.c. $$ p K − Λ ¯ + c . c . are set at the 90% confidence level.

Global and local polarization of Λ hyperons in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV from STAR

New results on global polarization of Λ hyperons in Au+Au collisions at √ s NN = 200 GeV reveal non-zero signal on the order of a few tenths of a percent. Compared with lower energy results, the current measurement shows that the polarization decreases at higher collision energy, the trend being well reproduced by theoretical calculations. The polarization is found to be larger in more peripheral collisions, as well as in the in-plane than in the out-of-plane direction. The signal seems to depend on the asymmetry between positive and negative charge in each event, which may indicate an influence of the axial current induced by the magnetic field. In addition, the first measurement of a local polarization along the beam direction was performed. The results show a quadrupole modulation relative to the second-order event plane, as expected from the elliptic flow.
