Spontaneously broken boosts and the Goldstone continuum

The spontaneous breaking of boost invariance is ubiquitous in nature, yet the associated Goldstone bosons are nowhere to be seen. We discuss why some subtleties are to be expected in the Goldstone phenomenon for spontaneously broken boosts, and derive the corresponding quantum mechanical, non-perturbative Goldstone theorem. Despite similarities with more standard Goldstone theorems, we show by examples that ours can be obeyed by quite unusual spectra of low-energy excitations. In particular, for non- relativistic Fermi liquids, we prove that it is obeyed by the particle-hole continuum . To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a Goldstone theorem obeyed by a continuum rather than by (approximately stable) single-particle Goldstone boson states in an interacting theory at zero temperature.

A Goldstone boson equivalence for inflation

The effective field theory of single-field inflation characterizes the inflationary epoch in terms of a pattern of symmetry breaking. An operator acquires a time-dependent vacuum expectation value, defining a preferred spatial slicing. In the absence of dynamical gravity, the fluctuations around the time-dependent background are described by the Goldstone boson associated with this symmetry breaking process. With gravity, the Goldstone is eaten by the metric, becoming the scalar metric fluctuation. In this paper, we will show that in general single-field inflation, the statistics of scalar metric fluctuations are given by the statistics of this Goldstone boson decoupled from gravity up to corrections that are controlled as an expansion in slow-roll parameters. This even holds in the presence of additional parameters, like the speed of sound, that naively enhance the impact of the gravitational terms. In the process, we derive expressions for leading and sub-leading gravitational corrections to all-orders in the Goldstone boson.

Observation of a Goldstone mode in the broken helix by time-resolved optical polarimetry

Magnets with isotropic easy-plane symmetry host Goldstone modes that can be leveraged for efficient spin transport. Here, we present a time-resolved optical polarimetry technique that allows us to detect and characterize such low-frequency modes, and use it to observe the Goldstone mode in the multi-Q broken helix phase of EuIn2As2. The strength of our technique comes from the ability to distinguish between nematic and magnetization dynamics in order to yield information about the mode structure, in addition to its frequency. We find that the nearly uniform spin precession characteristic of a Goldstone mode is realized only when a small magnetic field is used to unpin the broken helix from local strain generated during crystal growth. In this regime, the mode frequency scales linearly with the applied field due to the ground state C2z symmetry of the broken helix. Our work shows how optical polarimetry can be used to study the Goldstone modes of complex magnets.

Spin-triplet superconductivity from intervalley Goldstone modes in magic-angle graphene

Here, we consider magic-angle graphene in the doping regime around charge neutrality, and we study the connection between a recently proposed intervalley coherent insulator at zero doping and the neighboring superconducting domes. The magic-angle graphene continuum model has an emergent U(1) valley-charge conservation symmetry and an emergent SU(2) symmetry corresponding to opposite spin rotations in the two valleys. The intervalley coherent insulator spontaneously breaks both these emergent symmetries, and as a result has four Goldstone modes that couple to doped charge carriers. We derive the effective interaction mediated by the Goldstone modes, and we study its role in electron pair formation. The SU(2) Goldstone modes generate a ferromagnetic interaction, which is attractive in spin-triplet pairing channels and repulsive in spin-singlet channels. From a weak-coupling BCS calculation, we find the leading superconducting instability in the p-wave channel.

Superconductivity in a doped valley coherent insulator in magic angle graphene: Goldstone-mediated pairing and Kohn-Luttinger mechanism

We consider magic angle graphene in the doping regime around charge neutrality and study the connection between a recently proposed inter-valley coherent insulator at zero doping and the neighboring superconducting domes. The breaking of the valley U(1) symmetry leads to massless Goldstone modes, which couple to the doped charge carriers. We derive the effective interaction between these Goldstone modes and the conduction electrons and study its role in mediating superconductivity. Combining it with the screened Coulomb potential, we find weak-coupling superconducting instabilities in the two-component p- and d-wave channels. The competition between the two channels is set by the distance between the bilayer graphene device and the metallic gates. We find that the p-wave instability originates from the attraction mediated by the Goldstone modes, while the d-wave pairing is caused purely by the screened Coulomb interaction, similarly to the Kohn-Luttinger mechanism.

Gauged soft recursion: on-shell construction of Goldstone-gauge amplitudes

We present a new on-shell recursion relation for scattering amplitudes involving Nambu-Goldstone bosons with a gauged unbroken symmetry. A central challenge is that gauge interactions break Adler’s zero condition for charged scalars, invalidating the standard soft recursion. To overcome this, we introduce a “gauged soft recursion” that leverages the soft theorems of the gauge bosons themselves, combined with a novel decomposition of amplitudes into gauge-invariant components where Adler’s zero is partially restored. The formalism, which also incorporates internal gauge bosons via angular momentum constraints, enables the systematic construction of tree-level amplitudes with arbitrary numbers of Goldstone bosons and gauge bosons in both Abelian and non-Abelian theories, as we demonstrate with explicit examples.

Supercooled Goldstone Bosons at the QCD Chiral Phase Transition

We discuss a universal nonequilibrium enhancement of long-wavelength Goldstone bosons induced by quenches to the broken phase in Model G—the dynamical universality class of an 𝑂⁡(4) antiferromagnet and the chiral phase transition in QCD. Scaling arguments for the coarsening dynamics describing the formation of the chiral condensate predict a parametric enhancement in the infrared spectra of Goldstone bosons, a prediction confirmed by stochastic simulations of the transition. The details of the enhancement are determined by the nonlinear dynamics of a superfluid effective theory, which is a limit of Model G reflecting the broken 𝑂⁡(4) symmetry. Our results translate to a parametric enhancement of low-momentum pions in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC, which are underpredicted in current hydrodynamic models without critical dynamics.

Goldstone bosons and fluctuating hydrodynamics with dipole and momentum conservation

We develop a Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory describing the hydrodynamics of a fluid with conserved charge and dipole moments, together with conserved momentum. The resulting hydrodynamic modes are highly unusual, including sound waves with quadratic (magnon-like) dispersion relation and subdiffusive decay rate. Hydrodynamics itself is unstable below four spatial dimensions. We show that the momentum density is, at leading order, the Goldstone boson for a dipole symmetry which appears spontaneously broken at finite charge density. Unlike an ordinary fluid, the presence or absence of energy conservation qualitatively changes the decay rates of the hydrodynamic modes. This effective field theory naturally couples to curved spacetime and background gauge fields; in the flat spacetime limit, we reproduce the “mixed rank tensor fields” previously coupled to fracton matter.

Goldstone bosons on celestial sphere and conformal soft theorems

In this paper, we study celestial amplitudes of Goldstone bosons and conformal soft theorems. Motivated by the success of soft bootstrap in momentum space and the important role of the soft limit behavior of tree-level amplitudes, our goal is to extend some of the methods to the celestial sphere. The crucial ingredient of the calculation is the Mellin transformation, which transforms four-dimensional scattering amplitudes to correlation functions of primary operators in the celestial CFT. The soft behavior of the amplitude is then translated to the singularities of the correlator. Only for amplitudes in “UV completed theories” (with sufficiently good high energy behavior) the Mellin integration can be properly performed. In all other cases, the celestial amplitude is only defined in a distributional sense with delta functions. We provide many examples of celestial amplitudes in UV-completed models, including linear sigma models and Z-theory, which is a certain completion of the SU(N) non-linear sigma model. We also comment on the BCFW-like and soft recursion relations for celestial amplitudes and the extension of soft bootstrap ideas.

Primordial black hole dark matter from catastrogenesis with unstable pseudo-Goldstone bosons

We propose a new scenario for the formation of asteroid-mass primordial black holes (PBHs). Our mechanism is based on the annihilation of the string-wall network associated with the breaking of a U(1) global symmetry into a discrete Z N symmetry. If the potential has multiple local minima ( N > 1) the network is stable, and the annihilation is guaranteed by a bias among the different vacua. The collapse of the string-wall network is accompanied by catastrogenesis , a large production of pseudo-Goldstone bosons (pGBs) — e.g. axions, ALPs, or majorons — gravitational waves, and PBHs. If pGBs rapidly decay into products that thermalize, as predicted e.g. in the high-quality QCD axion and heavy majoron models, they do not contribute to the dark matter population, but we show that PBHs can constitute 100% of the dark matter. The gravitational wave background produced by catastrogenesis with heavy unstable axions, ALPs, or majorons could be visible in future interferometers.

Connecting pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone dark matter with pseudo-Dirac neutrinos in a left-right symmetry model

Stringent constraints from the dark matter (DM) direct detection experiments can be naturally evaded for a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) DM. We propose a realization of pNGB DM in the context of a left-right symmetric model, wherein the neutrinos are pseudo-Dirac in nature. The Dirac mass term for neutrinos arises from two-loop quantum corrections, whereas the Majorana mass terms are generated from Planck-induced corrections. This class of model also provides a parity solution to the strong C P problem without the need for an axion. We show an interesting correlation between the lifetime of the DM and the mass-squared differences between active and sterile neutrinos while maintaining a solution to the strong C P problem. Twisted bilayer graphene. V. Exact analytic many-body excitations in Coulomb Hamiltonians: Charge gap, Goldstone modes, and absence of Cooper pairing

We find exact analytic expressions for the energies and wave functions of the charged and neutral excitations above the exact ground states (at rational filling per unit cell) of projected Coulomb Hamiltonians in twisted bilayer graphene. Our exact expressions are valid for any form of the Coulomb interaction and any form of A A and A B / B A tunneling. The single charge excitation energy is a convolution of the Coulomb potential with a quantum geometric tensor of the TBG bands. The neutral excitations are (high-symmetry group) magnons, and their dispersion is analytically calculated in terms of the form factors of the active bands in TBG. The two-charge excitation energy and wave functions are also obtained, and a sufficient condition on the graphene eigenstates for obtaining a Cooper pair from Coulomb interactions is obtained. For the actual TBG bands at the first magic angle, we can analytically show that the Cooper pair binding energy is zero in all such projected Coulomb models, implying that either phonons and/or nonzero kinetic energy are needed for superconductivity. Since Vafek and Kang [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 257602 (2020)] showed that the kinetic energy bounds on the superexchange energy are less 10 -3 in Coulomb units, the phonon mechanism becomes then very likely. If nonetheless the superconductivity is due to kinetic terms which render the bands nonflat, one prediction of our theory is that the highest T c would not occur at the highest DOS.
