MgB$_{2}$ Coating by HPCVD for 1.3-GHz Superconducting RF Cavities

While MgB 2 possesses promising material parameters for SRF cavities with higher Q, higher gradient, and higher operation temperatures than Nb cavities, such cavity properties have not been demonstrated using MgB 2 . As part of a continuing effort to fabricate MgB 2 -coated SRF cavities by hybrid physical chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD), we present here an HPCVD system design for coating the inside wall of 1.3-GHz copper cavities with MgB 2 . The cavity is heated using a pair of clamshell resistive heaters that directly contact the cavity body. Here, the new heater design is more compact and requires less power to reach the deposition temperature (~500°C for MgB 2 deposition on copper.) Preliminary test of MgB 2 films grown on small copper substrates, mounted at different locations on the cavity, shows T c of 28.4 ~ 34.3 K, measured by AC susceptibility.

Synchrotron X-ray metrology of dopant distribution and oxidation state in high pressure CVD grown TM 2+ :ZnSe optical fibers

High pressure chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) has shown to be a promising method for producing Cr 2+ :ZnSe and Fe 2+ :ZnSe mid-IR optical fiber lasers. The oxidation state of the dopants and their spatial homogeneity are critical for the characterization of effective fiber laser performance; however, this is challenging for small fiber cores and small doping concentrations. We demonstrate using synchrotron micro X-ray fluorescence (XRF) mapping to study the distribution of the dopants throughout the fiber cross-sections. Furthermore, we study the local chemical environment of these unique fiber structures using micro X-ray near edge absorption spectroscopy (XANES). Our study reveals that transition metal doped ZnSe deposited using HPCVD has nanoscale dopant aggregation although the material is chemically identical to the commercially produced diffusion doped laser crystals, as indicated by the presence +2 oxidation state of the dopants. This work demonstrates the power of synchrotron-based X-ray techniques for use as metrology tools for improving the performance of laser materials in fiber geometry.

Fabrication and Radio Frequency Properties of 3-GHz SRF Cavities Coated with MgB 2

Magnesium diboride (MgB 2 ) is considered a potential material for superconducting radio frequency cavities. MgB 2 coated Cu cavity will allow for a higher operational temperature than a bulk Nb cavity because of the higher transition temperature of MgB 2 and the high thermal conductivity of Cu. Using the hybrid physical chemical vapor deposition technique, MgB 2 coatings were successfully achieved on the inner wall of 3-GHz Cu cavities. The surface and superconducting properties of the coatings were characterized using small samples on Cu plugs mounted at different locations of mock cavities. RF measurement of a MgB 2 coated single-cell 3-GHz test cavity was carried out and it showed superconducting transition at 36 K. Here, the quality factor of this test cavity was lower than expected due to poor connectivity and inclusion of Mg-Cu alloy in the MgB 2 coating.
