Modified Iterative Extended Hueckel. 1: Theory

Iterative Extended Huekel is modified by inclusion of explicit effective internuclear and electronic interactions. The one electron energies are shown to obey a variational principle because of the form of the effective electronic interactions. The modifications permit mimicking of aspects of valence bond theory with the additional feature that the energies associated with valence bond type structures are explicitly calculated. In turn, a hybrid molecular, orbital valence, bond scheme is introduced which incorporates variant total molecular electronic density distributions similar to the way that Iterative Extended Hueckel incorporates atoms.

Plasma-screening effects on the electron-impact excitation of hydrogenic ions in dense plasmas

Plasma-screening effects are investigated on electron-impact excitation of hydrogenic ions in dense plasmas. Scaled cross sections Z(exp 4) sigma for 1s yields 2s and 1s yields 2p are obtained for a Debye-Hueckel model of the screened Coulomb interaction. Ground and excited bound wave functions are modified in the screened Coulomb potential (Debye-Hueckel model) using the Ritz variation method. The resulting atomic wave functions and their eigenenergies agree well with the numerical and high-order perturbation theory calculations for the interesting domain of the Debye length not less than 10. The Born approximation is used to describe the continuum states of the projectile electron. Plasma screening effects on the atomic electrons cannot be neglected in the high-density cases. Including these effects, the cross sections are appreciably increased for 1s yields 2s transitions and decreased for 1s yields 2p transitions.

Improved solar models constructed with a formulation of convection for stellar structure and evolution calculations without the mixing-length theory approximations

We have updated a previous attempt to incorporate within a solar model a treatment of convection based upon numerical simulations of convection rather than mixing-length theory (MLT). We have modified our formulation of convection for a better treatment of the kinetic energy flux. Our solar model has been updated to include a complete range of OPAL opacities, the Debye-Hueckel correction to the equation of state, helium diffusion due to gravitational settling, and atmospheres by Kurucz. We construct a series of models using both MLT and our revised formulation of convection and the compared results to measurements of the solar radius, the solar luminosity, and the depth of the solar convection zone as inferred from helioseismology. We find X(solar) = 0.702 +/- 0.005, Y(solar) = 0.278 +/- 0.005, and Z(solar) = 0.0193 +/- 0.0005.

Theory of the classical electron gas

In a previous paper Cohen and Murphy (1969) used the Meeron resummation (1958) of the Mayer diagrams (1950) to calculate the pair correlation for the classical electron gas in thermal equilibrium. They found that successive terms in the expression for the pair correlation were more and more singular for small interparticle spacing, actually dominating the Debye-Hueckel result for sufficiently small distances. This led to apparent divergence in the higher order contributions to the internal energy. The present paper shows that the apparent anomalies in the Cohen-Murphy results can be removed without further resummation by a more careful treatment of the region of small interparticle spacing. It is shown that there is really no anomalous behavior at short range in any order and all integrals in the expression for the internal energy converge.
