Life-cycle analysis of integrated biorefineries with co-production of biofuels and bio-based chemicals: co-product handling methods and implications: Co-product handling methods and implications of life-cycle analysis of biofuel and bio-chemical co-producing biorefineries

New integrated biorefinery (IBR) concepts are being investigated to co-produce hydrocarbon fuels and high-value bio-based chemicals to improve the economic viability of IBRs, to enhance biomass resource utilization efficiencies, and to maximize potential greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. Unlike fuel-only biorefineries, IBRs may co-produce a significant amount of bio-based chemicals, whose emission implications for specific biorefinery products and the biorefinery as a whole need to be evaluated. We discuss this in principle and apply three sets of co-product handling methods to conduct life-cycle analysis (LCA) of modeled IBRs with co-production of two bioproduct examples - succinic acid and adipic acid - alongside a renewable diesel blendstock fuel product. The LCA results for the specific co-product handling methods that were examined shed light on potential artifacts of product-specific LCA with selected co-product methods. We discuss the advantages and limitations of each method and conclude that (i) a system-level or 'black-box' LCA allocation method is too simplistic to reflect appropriately the GHG burdens of distinctly different processing trains for fuels and chemicals in the IBR context, and (ii) the displacement method is the only co-product handling method that accounts fully for the emission effects of both the fuel product and the non-fuel bio-based co-products in the IBRs within the context of the existing fuel-focused GHG regulatory framework. Alternatively, biorefinery system-level LCA combines benefits of individual products to offer a complete picture. This system-level LCA approach offers a holistic LCA without somewhat arbitrary decisions either on an allocation basis or by the selection of an evaluation metric based on specific products.

On the challenges facing the handling of solid biomass feedstocks: On the Challenges Facing the Handling of Solid Biomass Feedstocks

With a major global emphasis on the management of waste, alternative resources and a shift to environmentally sustainable technologies, demand for large volumes of heterogeneous solid biomass feedstocks for energy or chemical use is expected to rise significantly. In transforming a sporadic supply of a low-value, highly variable product, to continuous and controlled high throughput systems, a thorough understanding of the feedstock properties will increase in importance. Appropriate characterisation tests are necessary to define technical specification and selection criteria for handling equipment and to appraise the requirement and location for additional processes or pre-treatment to be integrated into the handling chain. Such tests may also influence the material characteristics to be used in the conversion process. In this paper, we discuss the main feedstock attributes associated with a number of handling chain phases and the approach to obtain them. Lastly, the framework for a holistic approach to the characterisation and design of biomass feedstock handling systems for further development and practical implementation is also proposed.

Importance of Sample Handling and Preparation for Surface Analysis: A Summary of ISO Standard 20579 Part 1, Documenting and Reporting the Handling of Specimens Prior to Analysis

Reliable and reproducible analysis of surfaces is critically dependent on how samples have been collected, handled, and prepared before analysis. Although there are important, well-established general guidelines to minimize unintended alteration of the surfaces to be analyzed, specific handling steps depend on the nature of the samples and information desired. Assessments of the validity and reliability of the results require adequate information about sampling, handling, and processing. ISO standard 20579 part 1 describes the information to be recorded and reported for samples that are prepared or submitted for surface analysis. This paper summarizes elements of the standard, which includes annexes that justify and inform the sample handling processes. Also included is a checklist of information that needs to be recorded and reported and an appendix containing an example of a form that might be used to report the information.

TDRSS data handling and management system study. Ground station systems for data handling and relay satellite control

Results of a two-phase study of the (Data Handling and Management System DHMS) are presented. An original baseline DHMS is described. Its estimated costs are presented in detail. The DHMS automates the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) ground station's functions and handles both the forward and return link user and relay satellite data passing through the station. Direction of the DHMS is effected via a TDRSS Operations Control Central (OCC) that is remotely located. A composite ground station system, a modified DHMS (MDHMS), was conceptually developed. The MDHMS performs both the DHMS and OCC functions. Configurations and costs are presented for systems using minicomputers and midicomputers. It is concluded that a MDHMS should be configured with a combination of the two computer types. The midicomputers provide the system's organizational direction and computational power, and the minicomputers (or interface processors) perform repetitive data handling functions that relieve the midicomputers of these burdensome tasks.

Deletion of biofilm synthesis in Eubacterium limosum ATCC 8486 improves handling and transformation efficiency

Abstract Eubacterium limosum is an acetogenic bacterium of potential industrial relevance for its ability to efficiently metabolize a range of single carbon compounds. However, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) produced by the type strain ATCC 8486 is a serious impediment to bioprocessing and genetic engineering. To remove these barriers, here we bioinformatically identified genes involved in EPS biosynthesis, and targeted several of the most promising candidates for inactivation, using a homologous recombination-based approach. Deletion of a single genomic region encoding homologues for epsABC, ptkA, and tmkA resulted in a strain incapable of producing EPS. This strain is significantly easier to handle by pipetting and centrifugation, and retains important wild-type phenotypes including the ability to grow on methanol and carbon dioxide and limited oxygen tolerance. Additionally, this strain is also more genetically tractable with a 2-fold increase in transformation efficiency compared to the highest previous reports. This work advances a simple, rapid protocol for gene knockouts in E. limosum using only the native homologous recombination machinery. These results will hasten the development of this organism as a workhorse for valorization of single carbon substrates, as well as facilitate exploration of its role in the human gut microbiota.

Experimental characterization and modeling of optical tweezer particle handling dynamics [Modeling and Simulation of Optical Tweezer Particle Handling Dynamics]

Here, we report a new framework for a quantitative understanding of optical trapping (OT) particle handling dynamics. We present a novel three-dimensional particle-based model that includes optical, hydrodynamic, and inter-particle forces. This semi-empirical colloid model is based on an open-source simulation code known as LAMMPS (large-scale atomic/molecular massively parallel simulator) and properly recapitulates the full OT force profile beyond the typical linear approximations valid near the trap center. Simulations are carried out with typical system parameters relevant for our experimental holographic optical trapping (HOT) system, including varied particle sizes, trap movement speeds, and beam powers. Furthermore, we present a new experimental method for measuring both the stable and metastable boundaries of the optical force profile to inform or validate the model’s underlying force profile. We show that our framework is a powerful tool for accurately predicting particle behavior in a practical experimental OT setup and can be used to characterize and predict particle handling dynamics within any arbitrary OT force profile.

Handling handles. Part II. Stratification and data analysis

In a previous work, we proposed an integrability setup for computing nonplanar corrections to correlation functions in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at any value of the coupling constant. The procedure consists of drawing all possible tree-level graphs on a Riemann surface of given genus, completing each graph to a triangulation, inserting a hexagon form factor into each face, and summing over a complete set of states on each edge of the triangulation. The summation over graphs can be interpreted as a quantization of the string moduli space integration. The quantization requires a careful treatment of the moduli space boundaries, which is realized by subtracting degenerate Riemann surfaces, this procedure is called stratification. In this work, we precisely formulate our proposal and perform several perturbative checks. These checks require hitherto unknown multi-particle mirror contributions at one loop, which we also compute.

Handling Handles: Nonplanar Integrability in N = 4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

We propose an integrability setup for the computation of correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at higher orders in the large N c genus expansion and at any order in the ’t Hooft coupling g$2\atop{YM}$N c . In this multistep proposal, one polygonizes the string world sheet in all possible ways, hexagonalizes all resulting polygons, and sprinkles mirror particles over all hexagon junctions to obtain the full correlator. We test our integrability-based conjecture against a nonplanar four-point correlator of large 1/2 Bogomol’nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield operators at one and two loops.

Transportation and handling loads

Criteria and recommended practices are presented for the prediction and verification of transportation and handling loads for the space vehicle structure and for monitoring these loads during transportation and handling of the vehicle or major vehicle segments. Elements of the transportation and handling systems, and the forcing functions and associated loads are described. The forcing functions for common carriers and typical handling devices are assessed, and emphasis is given to the assessment of loads at the points where the space vehicle is supported during transportation and handling. Factors which must be considered when predicting the loads include the transportation and handling medium; type of handling fixture; transport vehicle speed; types of terrain; weather (changes in pressure of temperature, wind, etc.); and dynamics of the transportation modes or handling devices (acceleration, deceleration, and rotations of the transporter or handling device).

Incorporating Handling Qualities Analysis into Rotorcraft Conceptual Design

This paper describes the initial development of a framework to incorporate handling qualities analyses into a rotorcraft conceptual design process. In particular, the paper describes how rotorcraft conceptual design level data can be used to generate flight dynamics models for handling qualities analyses. Also, methods are described that couple a basic stability augmentation system to the rotorcraft flight dynamics model to extend analysis to beyond that of the bare airframe. A methodology for calculating the handling qualities characteristics of the flight dynamics models and for comparing the results to ADS-33E criteria is described. Preliminary results from the application of the handling qualities analysis for variations in key rotorcraft design parameters of main rotor radius, blade chord, hub stiffness and flap moment of inertia are shown. Varying relationships, with counteracting trends for different handling qualities criteria and different flight speeds are exhibited, with the action of the control system playing a complex part in the outcomes. Overall, the paper demonstrates how a broad array of technical issues across flight dynamics stability and control, simulation and modeling, control law design and handling qualities testing and evaluation had to be confronted to implement even a moderately comprehensive handling qualities analysis of relatively low fidelity models. A key outstanding issue is to how to 'close the loop' with an overall design process, and options for the exploration of how to feedback handling qualities results to a conceptual design process are proposed for future work.

Ant handling changes myrmecochore seed coat microbiomes and alters diversity of seed-borne plant pathogenic fungi

1. The putative benefits to seeds in myrmecochory (ant- mediated seed dispersal) are often cast in a reward context. However, microbes have been mostly overlooked as seed mortality agents in myrmecochory, as have potential treatments provided by ant-handling. 2. We investigated the effects of ant handling on the diversity of seed coat fungal communities of three myrmecochorous plant species. 3. Ant-handling altered measures of both alpha and beta diversity of fungal communities. Ant-handled seeds harboured different overall fungal communities and plant pathogen communities than non-ant-handled seeds. The myrmecochore pathogenic fungal community showed high dissimilarity (high pairwise community turnover) between ant-handled and control seeds, while beta diversity measures for ant- handled seeds and seeds with manually removed elaiosomes were less dissimilar. 4. Ant handling may offer an additional benefit to myrmecochorous seeds via the reduction in the seed coat pathogenic community, which may be driven by elaiosome removal or as a by-product of ant cleaning behaviours and chemical secretions.

Paper or Plastic? Multiscale Material Handling Properties of Two Model Municipal Solid Waste Streams

Purpose: Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is a potentially valuable sustainable feedstock for fuel and chemical production due to its carbon-rich content and low cost. This study aims to assess the material handling properties of paperand plastic-rich MSW feedstocks to mitigate equipment failure and processing downtime. Methods: The material handling properties of crumbled MSW feedstocks were measured using apowder rheometer with mass flow hopper calculations to assess handling performance. Inverse gas chromatography was use to measure the surface energy differences between feedstocks. Electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy was used to evaluate microscale features that may contribute to material handling differences. Results: Plastic and paper rich feedstocks crumbled to a nominal 2 mm particle size were observed to have similar flow and handling characteristics with reasonable hopper outlets. 2 mm plastic rich crumbles, with their higher bulk density, exhibited superior flow performance. By contrast, 4 mm material required significantly larger hopper outlets, indicating poor flowability. Paper rich and 4 mm plastic rich samples displayed broad particle size distributions, which contributed to particle interlocking, jamming, and other flow issues. Electron microscopy revealed that plastic rich samples were significantly smoother, enhancing their flowability compared to the rougher, paper rich materials. Conclusions: This study establishes critical material handling baselines for processing MSW as a viable feedstock for fuel and chemical production. The findings highlight the importance of optimizing particle size and feedstock composition to improve flowability and handling performance.

Handling Qualities Optimization for Rotorcraft Conceptual Design

Over the past decade, NASA, under a succession of rotary-wing programs has been moving towards coupling multiple discipline analyses in a rigorous consistent manner to evaluate rotorcraft conceptual designs. Handling qualities is one of the component analyses to be included in a future NASA Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization framework for conceptual design of VTOL aircraft. Similarly, the future vision for the capability of the Concept Design and Assessment Technology Area (CD&A-TA) of the U.S Army Aviation Development Directorate also includes a handling qualities component. SIMPLI-FLYD is a tool jointly developed by NASA and the U.S. Army to perform modeling and analysis for the assessment of flight dynamics and control aspects of the handling qualities of rotorcraft conceptual designs. An exploration of handling qualities analysis has been carried out using SIMPLI-FLYD in illustrative scenarios of a tiltrotor in forward flight and single-main rotor helicopter at hover. Using SIMPLI-FLYD and the conceptual design tool NDARC integrated into a single process, the effects of variations of design parameters such as tail or rotor size were evaluated in the form of margins to fixed- and rotary-wing handling qualities metrics as well as the vehicle empty weight. The handling qualities design margins are shown to vary across the flight envelope due to both changing flight dynamic and control characteristics and changing handling qualities specification requirements. The current SIMPLI-FLYD capability and future developments are discussed in the context of an overall rotorcraft conceptual design process.
