Current theories of man-machine systems

Theories and models conventionally employed to analyze man machine systems such as remotely manned vehicles and processes are reviewed. Basic ideas of supervisory or heirarchical manning, and needs for modeling are discussed.

Automatic photointerpretation via texture and morphology analysis

Computer-based techniques for automatic photointerpretation based upon information derived from texture and morphology analysis of images are discussed. By automatic photointerpretation, is meant the determination of semantic descriptions of the content of the images by computer. To perform semantic analysis of morphology, a heirarchical structure of knowledge representation was developed. The simplest elements in a morphology are strokes, which are used to form alphabets. The alphabets are the elements for generating words, which are used to describe the function or property of an object or a region. The words are the elements for constructing sentences, which are used for semantic description of the content of the image. Photointerpretation based upon morphology is then augmented by textural information. Textural analysis is performed using a pixel-vector approach.

A cluster analysis method for identification of subpopulations of cells in flow cytometric list-mode arrays

A specialized program was developed for flow cytometric list-mode data using an heirarchical tree method for identifying and enumerating individual subpopulations, the method of principal components for a two-dimensional display of 6-parameter data array, and a standard sorting algorithm for characterizing subpopulations. The program was tested against a published data set subjected to cluster analysis and experimental data sets from controlled flow cytometry experiments using a Coulter Electronics EPICS V Cell Sorter. A version of the program in compiled BASIC is usable on a 16-bit microcomputer with the MS-DOS operating system. It is specialized for 6 parameters and up to 20,000 cells. Its two-dimensional display of Euclidean distances reveals clusters clearly, as does its 1-dimensional display. The identified subpopulations can, in suitable experiments, be related to functional subpopulations of cells.

Parallel computations and their impact on mechanics; Proceedings of the Symposium, ASME Winter Annual Meeting, Boston, MA, Dec. 13-18, 1987

The conference presents papers on parallel architectures and the programming environment, parallel numerical algorithms, structural mechanics applications, and fluid dynamics applications. Topics include concurrent computer architecture, the state-of-the-art in highly parallel computer systems, supercomputer programming environments, uniquely parallel algorithms, the parallel solution of nonlinear elliptic equations, highly parallel banded systems solvers, and optimal mapping of irregular finite element domains to parallel processors. Consideration is also given to parallel processing in finite element structural analysis, heirarchical parallelism in a finite element CFD algorithm, and a parallelized elliptic solver for reacting flows.

Technology test results from an intelligent, free-flying robot for crew and equipment retrieval in space

The ground-based demonstrations of Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) Retriever, a voice-supervised, intelligent, free-flying robot, are designed to evaluate the capability to retrieve objects (astronauts, equipment, and tools) which have accidentally separated from the Space Station. The EVA Retriever software is required to autonomously plan and execute a target rendezvous, grapple, and return to base while avoiding stationary and moving obstacles with subsequent object handover. The software architecture incorporates a heirarchical decomposition of the control system that is horizontally partitioned into five major functional subsystems: sensing, perception, world model, reasoning, and acting. The design provides for supervised autonomy as the primary mode of operation. It is intended to be an evolutionary system improving in capability over time and as it earns crew trust through reliable and safe operation. This paper gives an overview of the hardware, a focus on software, and a summary of results achieved recently from both computer simulations and air bearing floor demonstrations. Limitations of the technology used are evaluated. Plans for the next phase, during which moving targets and obstacles drive realtime behavior requirements, are discussed.

Performance prediction: A case study using a multi-ring KSR-1 machine

While computers with tens of thousands of processors have successfully delivered high performance power for solving some of the so-called 'grand-challenge' applications, the notion of scalability is becoming an important metric in the evaluation of parallel machine architectures and algorithms. In this study, the prediction of scalability and its application are carefully investigated. A simple formula is presented to show the relation between scalability, single processor computing power, and degradation of parallelism. A case study is conducted on a multi-ring KSR1 shared virtual memory machine. Experimental and theoretical results show that the influence of topology variation of an architecture is predictable. Therefore, the performance of an algorithm on a sophisticated, heirarchical architecture can be predicted and the best algorithm-machine combination can be selected for a given application.
