The Superfluid Transition of Helium-4 in the Presence of an Applied Heat Flow in 1-g and Below: Comparison between Experiment and Numerical Simulations

Reported are thermal conductivity measurements of liquid Helium-4 at saturated vapor pressure. measurements were made inside a super- conducting magnet. The thermal conductivity measurements consist of ramping the temperature at the cell top while passing a constant heat current through the cell from the bottom. Numerical results are quantitatively compared with the observed experimental behavior.

Thermophysical properties of helium-4 from 4 to 3000 R with pressures to 15000 psia

Data on many of the properties of helium commonly used in engineering calculations are compiled over as wide a temperature and pressure range as is practical. These properties are presented in a form which is convenient to the engineer. All of these properties have been critically evaluated and represent the best values for that property at this time.

Prospects for determining the cosmological helium-3 to helium-4 ratio via absorption-line studies of the local interstellar medium

The prospects for determining the interstellar (He-3)/(He-4) ratio via absorption-line studies in the extreme ultraviolet are considered. A high-resolution extreme-ultraviolet spectrometer fed by a 1-meter-class telescope similar to that discussed in the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Report (1983) is assumed, and it is found that detection of He-3 may be possible with less than three days of observing time. To measure the (He-3)/(He-4) ratio with sufficient precision to determine the number of light neutrino species will require over 50 days of integration time for each object studied.

Thermophysical properties of Helium-4 from 0.8 to 1500 K with pressures to 2000 MPa

Tabular summary data of the thermophysical properties of fluid helium are given for temperatures from 0.8 to 1500 K, with pressures to 2000 MPa between 75 and 300 K, or to 100 MPa outside of this temperature band. Properties include density, specific heats, enthalpy, entropy, internal energy, sound velocity, expansivity, compressibility, thermal conductivity, and viscosity. The data are calculated from a computer program which is available from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The computer program is based on carefully fitted state equations for both normal and superfluid helium.

A helium-3 refrigerator employing capillary confinement of liquid cryogen

A condensation refrigerator suitable for operation in a zero gravity space environment was constructed. The condensed liquid refrigerant is confined by surface tension inside a porous metal matrix. Helium-4 and helium-3 gases were condensed and held in a copper matrix. Evaporative cooling of confined liquid helium-4 resulted in a temperature of 1.4K. Using a zeolite adsorption pump external to the cryostat, a temperature of 0.6 K was achieved through evaporative cooling of liquid helium-3. The amount of time required for complete evaporation of a controlled mass of liquid helium-4 contained in the copper matrix was measured as a function of the applied background power. For heating powers below 18 mW the measured times are consistent with the normal boiling of the confined volume of liquid refrigerant. At background powers above 18 mW the rapid rise in the temperature of the copper matrix the signature of the absence of confined liquid occurs in a time a factor of two shorter than that expected on the basis of an extrapolation of the low power data.

Elastic scattering of 600-MeV protons from H, D, He-3, and He-4.

Study of the elastic scattering of 600-MeV protons from light nuclei. Differential cross sections have been obtained for the scattering of protons from hydrogen, deuterium, helium-3, and helium-4. Polarization was measured for deuterium and He-4 nuclei. The p-p cross-section data are in excellent agreement with the predictions from the Livermore phase shifts. Small-angle p-D, p-He-3 elastic scattering data are compared with calculations based on the multiple-scattering theories of Watson and Glauber.

Solar flare accelerated isotopes of hydrogen and helium

Measurements of solar flare hydrogen, deuterium, tritium, helium-3, and helium-4 in the energy range approximately 10 to 50 MeV per nucleon obtained with instrumentation on the IMP-4 and IMP-5 satellites are reported and studies based on these results which place several constraints on theories of solar flare particle acceleration are discussed. A brief review of previous work and the difficulties in studying the rare isotopes of hydrogen and helium is also included. Particular emphasis is placed on the fact that the information to be obtained from the solar flare products of high energy interactions is not available through either solar wind observations where both the acceleration mechanism and the coronal source of the nuclear species are different, or optical measurements of solar active regions.

Magnetospheric particle composition experiment

Thin foils of aluminum and platinum were mounted on the exterior of the Skylab spacecraft where they were bombarded by particles that penetrate to the 400-km spacecraft altitude, including auroral particles precipitating from the earth magnetosphere. These foils have a high trapping efficiency for both charged and neutral particles above 1 keV and a decreasing but appreciable efficiency below that energy. Some sections of the foils were double layered to obtain an estimate of the energy of the entrapped particles. The foils were retrieved and returned for analysis in an ultrahigh-vacuum mass spectrometer. So far, the noble gas components of the entrapped particles have been analyzed in selected sections of two foils. Helium-4, helium-3, neon-20, and neon-22 have been detected.

A small gas inlet system for orbital mass-spectrometer calibrations

A gas inlet system is described for generating precise gas pressures that are to be used as calibration references for the mass spectrometers aboard the dual air density Explorer satellites. This gas inlet system was developed as an inflight calibration technique in which a known amount of onboard gas is released in the satellite cavity and is detected by the mass spectrometer. Although several flight mass spectrometer experiments have been proposed, none make use of the inflight calibration technique described in this report. Laboratory measurements and calibration of the metering leak technique for the gas inlet systems are discussed. The systems tested have metering leak rates between 2 and 4 microliters/sec at 298 K for argon-40, and they produce molecular flow up to 100 torr, which is the highest test pressure in this experiment. Test data show that metering leak rates are reproducible within 1 percent of established means for helium-3, helium-4, and argon-40.

Evaluation of composite bolometers at 0.4 Kelvin

Composite bolometer structures have provided the most sensitive IR detectors for operation at helium-4 temperatures of 1.5K. Below 1.5K the electrical and thermal properties change significantly and the performance characteristics cannot be accurately extrapolated for composite bolometers at helium-3 temperatures of 0.4K. The paper deals with experimentally assessed performance of composite bolometers at 0.4K. It is found that sensitivity estimates derived from electrical or load curve properties can overestimate the responsivity to radiation by several orders of magnitude depending upon a particular material behavior. For many near-millimeter applications background power levels are several nanowatts and the associated photon noise plus Johnson and phonon noise components impose a fundamental detection limit of about 5 x 10 to the -15thW/Hz to the -1/2. We have successfully fabricated composite bolometers which at 0.4 K and millimeter wavelengths achieve a noise equivalent power of 7 x 10 to the -15thW/Hz to the -1/2 coupled with a large absorbing area (0.3 sq cm) and a fast response time (2 msec.).

Helium on Venus - Implications for uranium and thorium

Helium is removed at an average rate of 10 to the 6th atoms per square centimeter per second from Venus's atmosphere by the solar wind following ionization above the plasmapause. The surface source of helium-4 on Venus is similar to that on earth, suggesting comparable abundances of crustal uranium and thorium.
