Hermes-3: Multi-component plasma simulations with BOUT++

A new open source tool for fluid simulation of multi-component plasmas is presented, based on a flexible software design that is applicable to scientific simulations in a wide range of fields. Hermes-3 is built on plasma simulation framework BOUT++, consolidating earlier SD1D and Hermes models into a single code that can be configured at run-time to solve plasma models in 1D, 2D or 3D, either for transport (steady-state) or turbulent (time-evolving) problems, with an arbitrary number of ion and neutral species. Here, we describe the improved numerical algorithms and software design that have been implemented in Hermes-3. To demonstrate the capabilities of this tool, applications relevant to the boundary of tokamak plasmas are presented: 1D simulations of diveror plasmas evolving equations for all charge states of neon and deuterium; 2D transport simulations of tokamak equilibria in single-null X-point geometry with plasma ion and neutral atom species; and simulations of the time-dependent propagation of plasma filaments (blobs). Hermes-3 is publicly available on Github under the GPL-3 open source license. The repository includes documentation and a suite of unit, integrated and convergence tests.

Zinc-finger BED domains drive the formation of the active Hermes transpososome by asymmetric DNA binding

The Hermes DNA transposon is a member of the eukaryotic hAT superfamily, and its transposase forms a ring-shaped tetramer of dimers. Our investigation, combining biochemical, crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy, and in-cell assays, shows that the full-length Hermes octamer extensively interacts with its transposon left-end through multiple BED domains of three Hermes protomers contributed by three dimers explaining the role of the unusual higher-order assembly. By contrast, the right-end is bound to no BED domains at all. Thus, this work supports a model in which Hermes multimerizes to gather enough BED domains to find its left-end among the abundant genomic DNA, facilitating the subsequent interaction with the right-end.

HERMES 2019 Upgrade Characterization - Quick Look Report (UUR)

Characterizing the electromagnetic environment created by the recently upgraded HERMES III pulser is the primary objective addressed by this report. The pulser upgrade design was intended not only to provide higher electric field and magnetic field illumination amplitudes but also to provide a more collimated beam, focused along the center-line of the courtyard. For high-voltage pulsers to be useful as qualification systems, they must have the requisite peak values and uniform, predictable peak field spatial patterns. To assess the peak electric field values and uniformity of the spatial pattern of the electric fields for the upgraded HERMES system, a 1 6 full-power shot illumination of 9 electric and 9 magnetic field sensors in the courtyard of the HERMES III facility was conducted. The data acquired from this test showed an increase an increase in electric field amplitude, but still an asymmetry in the spatial distributions.

SCALE inventory and reactivity analysis as part of the Hermes 2021 PSAR review

The readiness of SCALE for comprehensive studies of pebble-bed reactors has been demonstrated through detailed analysis of a fluoride salt–cooled, high-temperature pebble-bed reactor (PB-FHR). The methods developed for pebble-bed reactor modeling in SCALE, particularly for inventory generation, have proven effective in gaining insights into the reactor physics of this advanced reactor. Excellent agreement with another code package has been observed, further highlighting SCALE’s strong performance. The SCALE results supported the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s construction permit application review of the Hermes low-power PB-FHR demonstration reactor. A SCALE model of the Hermes reactor was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory using information from the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) and supplemented with publicly available data. SCALE reactivity coefficient simulations reproduced PSAR results within 1σ statistical uncertainties. Sensitivity studies emphasized the importance of graphite specifications for accurate keff predictions.

Design and Performance of the Solid-State Laser Trigger System for HERMES III

The HERMES III accelerator is an 18-20 MeV linear induction accelerator constructed at Sandia National Laboratories in the late 1980s and which continues operation to this day. As part of recent modernization efforts, the laser triggering system on the accelerator has been replaced with a newly designed solid-state system. This system consists of ten Nd:YAG lasers, each having a nominal output energy of 40-45 mJ at a wavelength of 266 nm. The beam from each laser is split such that it triggers two of the Rimfire gas switches on the accelerator. Compared to the previous laser triggering system, this arrangement makes it possible to more readily tailor the final output pulse shape, and overall reliability for the accelerator's operation with these new lasers has increased. The design of this new laser triggering system is presented in this paper, along with details pertaining to the energy budgeting, optical beam paths, and electrical triggering of the lasers. Initial operational data from the HERMES III accelerator using this new triggering system is also presented.

Validation of Hermes-3 turbulence simulations against the TCV-X21 diverted L-mode reference case

Electrostatic flux-driven turbulence simulations with the Hermes-3 code are performed in TCV L-mode conditions in forward and reversed toroidal field configurations, and compared to the TCV-X21 reference dataset (Oliveira et al 2022 Nucl. Fusion 62 096001) qualitatively and with a quantitative methodology. Using only the magnetic equilibrium, total power across the separatrix (120 kW) and total particle flux to the targets (3 x 10 21 s −1 ) as inputs, the simulations produce time-averaged plasma profiles in good agreement with experiment. Shifts in the target peak location when the toroidal field direction is reversed are reproduced in simulation, including the experimentally observed splitting of the outer strike point into two density peaks. The overall normalized discrepancy between simulation and observation is better than any previously reported in the reversed field configuration, and matches the best previously reported in forward field configuration. Differences between simulation and experiment include density profiles inside the separatrix and at the inner target in forward (favorable $\bigtriangledown B$) field configuration. These differences in target temperature in forward field configuration lead to differences in the balance of current to the inner and outer divertor in the private flux region. The cause of these differences is most likely the lack of neutral gas in these simulations, indicating that even in low recycling regimes neutral gas plays an important role in determining edge plasma profiles. These conclusions are consistent with findings in Oliveira et al (2022 https://github.com/SPCData/TCV-X21).

HERMES - High-speed Event Retrieval and Management for Enhanced Spectral imaging code. This code is meant to unpack and process neutron imaging data from the TPX3Cam made by Amsterdam Scientific Instruments. The TPX3Cam utilizes the Timepix3 chip in a single photon counting mode of image acquisition. The photon counting data streaming off the TPX3Cam needs to be process and analyzed in order to create final images. Therefore we are developing both python and cpp codes to allow for users of the TPX3Cam to efficiently analyze data and create images.

Characterization of the Redesigned Extended MITL for HERMES III

Modeling and simulation of the legacy HERMES III Magnetically Insulated Transmission Line (MITL) has been performed using EMPHASIS, an unstructured time-domain electromagnetic (UTDEM) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation software. This design when used lost roughly half of its current before the pulse reached the load. The cause of the current loss in the MITL was found to be the vacuum impedance changes along the MITL. The MITL was then redesigned to maintain constant impedance and simulated in EMPHASIS once again. Following predicting simulation results, the new MITL was then built, installed, and tested, showing minimal current loss and good agreement with simulation and theoretical results, all of which are reported here. Additionally, an analysis of experimental voltage calculation techniques using cathode and anode currents is performed and compared to simulation results.

Progress in Modeling the 2019 Extended Magnetically Insulated Transmission Line (MITL) and Courtyard Environment Trial at HERMES-III

This report documents the progress made in simulating the HERMES-III Magnetically Insulated Transmission Line (MITL) and courtyard with EMPIRE and ITS. This study focuses on the shots that were taken during the months of June and July of 2019 performed with the new MITL extension. There were a few shots where there was dose mapping of the courtyard, 11132, 11133, 11134, 11135, 11136, and 11146. This report focuses on these shots because there was full data return from the MITL electrical diagnostics and the radiation dose sensors in the courtyard. The comparison starts with improving the processing of the incoming voltage into the EMPIRE simulation from the experiment. The currents are then compared at several location along the MITL. The simulation results of the electrons impacting the anode are shown. The electron impact energy and angle is then handed off to ITS which calculates the dose on the faceplate and locations in the courtyard and they are compared to experimental measurements. ITS also calculates the photons and electrons that are injected into the courtyard, these quantities are then used by EMPIRE to calculated the photon and electron transport in the courtyard. The details for the algorithms used to perform the courtyard simulations are presented as well as qualitative comparisons of the electric field, magnetic field, and the conductivity in the courtyard. Because of the computational burden of these calculations the pressure was reduce in the courtyard to reduce the computational load. The computation performance is presented along with suggestion on how to improve both the computational performance as well as the algorithmic performance. Some of the algorithmic changed would reduce the accuracy of the models and detail comparison of these changes are left for a future study. As well as, list of code improvements there is also a list of suggested experimental improvements to improve the quality of the data return.

Compact Bremsstrahlung Diode Development on HERMES-III

Testing of a compact Bremsstrahlung diode at the High Energy Radiation Megavolt Electron Source III (HERMES-III) was performed at Sandia National Laboratories in November, 2023. The compact diode described here is the first prototype diode in a campaign to optimize a Bremsstrahlung diode in terms of size and dose production. The goal was to test the diode at 13MV, and the experiment realized between 10-12MV at the diode. Modeling and simulation of this geometry was performed after the test, shedding insight into several phenomena seen by experimental diagnostics. Modifications to the diode and experiment are proposed for future experiments to help explain the phenomena and approach a better final design.

Extraction of the worm-gear TMD g1t from COMPASS , HERMES and JLab data on semi-inclusive DIS

Transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) are an important class of functions required to understand the 3D structure of hadrons in terms of their underlying partons. One of the least known TMDs in terms of a global QCD analysis is the worm-gear TMD g1t . It carries the probabilistic interpretation of finding longitudinally polarized quarks inside transversely polarized hadrons. In this proceedings, we present the first-ever global QCD analysis of the semi-inclusive DIS $A^ {cos(φ_h-φ_S)}_{LT}$ data using Monte Carlo techniques to extract the worm-gear TMD g1T . The relevant data are available from COMPASS, HERMES and JLab. We compare our results for g1T with different theoretical approaches, including the large-N c approximation, the Wandzura Wilczek-type approximation, and lattice QCD.
