Latest Three Flavor Neutrino Oscillation Results from the NOvA Experiment.

NOvA, is a two-detector, long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment located at Fermilab, Batavia, IL, USA. It is designed primarily to constrain neutrino oscillation parameters such as the atmospheric mass squared splitting, $\Delta m^2_{32}$, the mixing angle, $\theta_{23}$, neutrino mass hierachy, and the CP-violating phase, $\delta_{CP}$, using $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ disappearance and $\nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ appearance data. NOvA receives a high purity instense beam of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos from Fermilab's Neutrinos at Main Injector (NuMI) beamline. The NOvA near detector (ND) observes un-oscillated $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ and beam $\nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ events, while the far detector (FD), which is situated 810 km away from the near detector, records un-oscillated $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ and oscillated $\nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ events. The best fit values of the oscillation parameters are extracted by performing a joint fit of the far detector predicted events to data from $\nu_\mu \to \nu_\mu$, $\bar{\nu}_\mu \to \bar{\nu}_\mu$, $\nu_\mu \to \nu_e$, and $\bar{\nu}_\mu \to \bar{\nu}_e$ oscillation channels. We present latest joint fit results from NOvA based on a neutrino-beam exposure of $27.24 \times 10^{20}$ POT and an anti-neutrino beam exposure of $12.55\times 10^{20}$ POT and improved simulations.

Three-Flavor Neutrino Oscillations at NOvA

NOvA receives a high purity 900 KW instense beam of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos from Fermilab's Neutrinos at Main Injector (NuMI) beamline. NOvA used functionally identical finely granulated liquid scintillation detectors, both situated 14.6 mrad off-axis to the beam direction. The NOvA near detector observes un-oscillated $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ and beam $\nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ events, while the far detector, which is situated 809 km away from the near detector, records un-oscillated $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ and oscillated $\nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ events. We will discuss the neutrino oscillation analysis strategy at NOvA and the latest three-flavor oscillation results from 10 years of NOvA data in this talk.

Details of the NOvA 3-flavor oscillation analysis

NOvA is a world-leading long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its fine granularity allows the detection and identification of particle interactions in the detectors, notably muon and electron neutrino interactions. NOvA can measure the electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance rates, as well as the muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance rates, in order to constrain the neutrino oscillations parameters, the neutrino mass hierarchy and the CP-violating phase $\delta_{CP}$.NOvA's latest results combine both neutrino data (8.85$\times{}10^{20}$ POT) and antineutrino data (12.33$\times{}10^{20}$ POT). A 4.4$\sigma$ evidence for $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ appearance in a $\overline{\nu}_{\mu}$ beam was measured. In addition, NOvA favors the Normal Hierachy (1.9$\sigma$) and prefers the Upper Octant for $\theta_{23}$ (1.6$\sigma$).}

A concise history of Hawaii

The review outlines the early migration of Polynesian settlers from the Marquesa and Society Islands, develops the ancient societal hierachy, reports on the historic visits of Captain Cook, and describes the gradual weakening of the native culture and population by increased foreign trade and the final annexation of the islands by the United States of America.

Characterization of nonideal silicon in terms of lifetime and diffusion length

Experimental methods have been evaluated for the determination of lifetime and diffusion length in silicon intentionally doped with potentially lifetime-degrading impurities which may be present in low-cost silicon intended for use in terrestrial flat-plate arrays. Results obtained with these methods have been compared for mutual consistency. The effects of a number of impurities on bulk lifetime were determined from steady-state photoconductivity, and solar cells fabricated from this material were characterized in terms of diffusion length using a penetrating light technique. Comparison was made with results obtained by others using photoconductivity decay. General agreement was found in terms of the hierachy of impurities to which the lifetime is sensitive. The utility of the steady-state photoconductivity method is established even in the presence of considerable trapping.

An expert system prototype for aiding in the development of software functional requirements for NASA Goddard's command management system: A case study and lessons learned

At NASA Goddard, the role of the command management system (CMS) is to transform general requests for spacecraft opeerations into detailed operational plans to be uplinked to the spacecraft. The CMS is part of the NASA Data System which entails the downlink of science and engineering data from NASA near-earth satellites to the user, and the uplink of command and control data to the spacecraft. Presently, it takes one to three years, with meetings once or twice a week, to determine functional requirements for CMS software design. As an alternative approach to the present technique of developing CMS software functional requirements, an expert system prototype was developed to aid in this function. Specifically, the knowledge base was formulated through interactions with domain experts, and was then linked to an existing expert system application generator called 'Knowledge Engineering System (Version 1.3).' Knowledge base development focused on four major steps: (1) develop the problem-oriented attribute hierachy; (2) determine the knowledge management approach; (3) encode the knowledge base; and (4) validate, test, certify, and evaluate the knowledge base and the expert system prototype as a whole. Backcasting was accomplished for validating and testing the expert system prototype. Knowledge refinement, evaluation, and implementation procedures of the expert system prototype were then transacted.

Analysis of the Intel 386 and i486 microprocessors for the Space Station Freedom Data Management System

The feasibility is analyzed of upgrading the Intel 386 microprocessor, which has been proposed as the baseline processor for the Space Station Freedom (SSF) Data Management System (DMS), to the more advanced i486 microprocessors. The items compared between the two processors include the instruction set architecture, power consumption, the MIL-STD-883C Class S (Space) qualification schedule, and performance. The advantages of the i486 over the 386 are (1) lower power consumption; and (2) higher floating point performance. The i486 on-chip cache does not have parity check or error detection and correction circuitry. The i486 with on-chip cache disabled, however, has lower integer performance than the 386 without cache, which is the current DMS design choice. Adding cache to the 386/386 DX memory hierachy appears to be the most beneficial change to the current DMS design at this time.
