Reassessment of PHDS Fulcrum40h High Purity Germanium (HPGe) Detector System Performance

This report presents a comprehensive evaluation of the updated PHDS Fulcrum40h High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector system, benchmarking its performance, usability, and software capabilities against the current National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) HPGe Detector System Requirements Document. Systematic measurements were conducted using a single Fulcrum40h detector to assess key parameters including gamma efficiency and resolution, neutron detection efficiency, gamma pulse-pileup response, and gamma-to-neutron crosstalk. The Fulcrum40h system, acquired in August 2022, has undergone recent updates by PHDS to address deficiencies identified following the initial NEST requirements release. The results provide critical insights into the detector’s operational capabilities and compliance with NNSA NEST standards.

2025 Annual INMM Graph and Tables for High Purity Germanium Detector Normalization Presentation

The data set includes gamma spectroscopy peak data for measurements taken with two different high purity germanium detectors using a mixed nuclide source and a U-235 fuel rod. There are a total of 5 specific energy peaks that were analyzed for the mixed nuclide source stemming from Am-241, Cd-109, Cs-137, and Co-60. There are a total of 3 specific energy peaks that were analyzed for the U-235 fuel rod. The data set includes the calculations and results from using a linear correction factor, absolute efficiency curve, and relative efficiency curve to compare the net peaks counts from two different detectors.

First-Principles insights into group-V impurities and their impact on germanium detector performance

The outstanding properties of high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors, such as excellent energy resolution, high energy sensitivity, and a low background-to-signal ratio, make them essential and ideal candidates for detecting particle signatures in nuclear processes such as neutrino-less double beta decay (0νββ). However, the presence of defects and impurities in HPGe crystals can lead to charge trapping, which affects carrier mobility and results in significant energy resolution degradation. In this work, we employ density functional theory with a hybrid functional to study the energetics of possible point defects in Ge. Our findings indicate that group-V impurities form more readily in Ge compared to vacancy and interstitial of Ge. Unlike N dopants, which yield deep trap states, P, As, and Sb create shallow traps close to the conduction band edge of Ge. Furthermore, we predict that group-V defects can condense into defect complexes with Ge vacancies. These vacancy-impurity complexes form deep traps in Ge, similar to Ge vacancies, suggesting that both vacancies and vacancy-impurity complexes contribute to charge trapping in these detectors, thereby diminishing their performance.

Godiva IV central cavity neutron environment characterization with threshold neutron detectors

Godiva IV is a cylindrical fast burst reactor comprised of approximately 65 kg of highly enriched uranium that is operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory and sited at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center at the Nevada National Security Site in Nevada in the United States. Godiva IV is typically operated at delayed critical and in the regime spanning from sub-prompt to super-prompt bursts. Godiva IV is used for sample irradiations, criticality safety demonstrations, dosimetry studies, and for studying super-prompt behavior. In preparation for both an upcoming experiment to reduce uncertainties in the prompt fission spectrum for 235U using threshold neutron detectors, and for future research using Godiva IV, it was desired to exercise the process of the selection of threshold neutron detectors/activation foils, radiation metrology, and the subsequent adjustment of the neutron spectrum. For this exercise, nine high purity threshold neutron detectors/activation foils were irradiated in a Godiva IV burst. The foils were then analyzed using a high-purity germanium detector in the NCERC counting laboratory to determine end of irradiation specific activities for available IRDFF-II reactions. This work summarizes the Godiva IV foil irradiation, radiation metrology results, and adjusted neutron spectrum. The results of this exercise ultimately characterized the neutron environment inside the sample irradiation cavity inside Godiva IV to a higher degree than previously performed, informed decisions for the upcoming larger scale experiment, and will inform future neutron spectrum characterizations at NCERC.

127 Xe quantification method development and intercomparison exercise

Monitoring of the atmosphere for fission products ( 131m Xe, 133m Xe, 133 Xe, and 135 Xe) is performed by various laboratories to detect nuclear explosions. Quantification of 127 Xe is not routinely performed by laboratories measuring atmospheric radioxenon because it is not a fission product. 127 Xe was recently detected by a ground-based beta-gamma air monitoring system. When measured using beta-gamma coincidence detector systems, such as those in use on the International Monitoring System (IMS) of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), 127 Xe can interfere with the quantification of fission product radioxenon due to overlap of the 127 Xe beta-gamma coincidence signatures with those of fission product radioxenon. Here, this work demonstrates quantification of 127 Xe at different laboratories with different measurement techniques. Production and purification of 127 Xe was performed by neutron activation of enriched 126 Xe. The purified 127 Xe was then split between laboratories, and detection and quantification methods were developed. At Idaho National Laboratory, a quantification method involving high purity germanium detectors was devised that included self-attenuation correction. At AWE, a beta-gamma coincidence counting method, as used in support of the IMS, was modified to enable the measurement and analysis of the 127 Xe samples. Corrections were made for self-attenuation, which showed a strong xenon volume dependency, for some coincidence signatures. The gas sample activity concentration was used as the comparison metric and it showed excellent agreement between the methods.

Gaia: segmented germanium detector for high-energy X-ray fluorescence and spectroscopic imaging

We present Gaia, a monolithic array of 96 high-purity germanium pixel detectors integrated with a custom low-noise application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based data acquisition system. The sensor operates at ∼100 K using a commercial closed-cycle cryocooler, with the in-vacuum electronics thermally isolated from the cold finger to ensure thermal stability. The system demonstrates an average energy resolution of 711 eV at 122 keV, measured using a 57 Co source, and 253 eV at 5.89 keV, measured with 55 Fe across all channels. The readout architecture incorporates a high-performance FPGA paired with a dual-core ARM processor, forming a complete embedded Linux-based computing platform. Communication between the processor and FPGA is handled via memory-mapped I/O, and data are streamed over high-speed gigabit Ethernet. A full-scale 384-pixel Gaia detector, based on this 96-element module, is currently under fabrication.

Angular Correlations of Gamma Rays from Fission Product Solution

Fission products from photon-induced fission are routinely used at Idaho National Laboratory as part of nuclear forensics activities. Typically, the focus is on fission products with relatively large fission yields (Ba-140, Mo-99, etc.). The nuclear data associated with the well-known isotopes have small uncertainties, and many have well-known angular correlations between emitted gamma-rays, if applicable. However, for isotopes with smaller fission yields or less intense gamma-ray emission intensities, the nuclear decay schemes and gamma-ray emission intensities may be less well-known. The Germanium Rotational Measurements for Angular Correlation (GeRMAC) system was designed to use two high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors in a coincidence counting set-up but allows one of the HPGe detectors to rotate at a constant distance from a radioactive source, changing the relative angle between the two HPGe detectors. Angular correlations can then be determined from the relative photopeak areas between two gamma-rays emitted as part of the same nuclear decay. By recording the HPGe spectra in list mode, the angular correlations of gamma-rays emitted from complex sources, consisting of multiple isotopes, can be measured simultaneously and the individual isotope emissions can be isolated. Using the GeRMAC system, a multi-isotope fission product source, produced with photon-induced fission of U-238, was measured using a single rotational arc (180 degrees) to obtain the angular correlation between gamma-rays emitted by the large number of fission products contained in the solution with an angular accuracy of 1 degree. In particular, La-140 (38 gamma rays) and Nd-147 (26 gamma rays) are of interest to the nuclear forensics community.

Characterization of the First Prototype of the L1K65n Differential-Output Charge-Sensitive Preamplifier ASIC for High-Performance, Low-Background HPGe Detector Readout

Next-generation neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay searches require a large detector/isotope mass and very low radioactive backgrounds. The upcoming LEGEND-1000 experiment (Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless double-beta Decay) constitute a ton-scale array of several hundred high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors enriched in 76Ge, the isotope of interest. It aims to reach a sensitivity beyond 10 28 years on the 0νββ decay half-life of 76Ge, necessitating an order of magnitude reduction in background with respect to the state of the art. This will require the implementation of a dedicated application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) preamplifier that will significantly lower background contribution compared to the conventional low-mass front end (LMFE) employed in the Majorana Demonstrator and LEGEND-200 experiments while maintaining or improving energy resolution and other performance parameters. Features include a high (9 MeV) dynamic range with noise low enough to achieve a trigger threshold of <1 keV, a single power supply to reduce background-inducing cabling, and a differential output to maintain signal integrity over several meters of transmission line. The chip would be optimized to operate in liquid argon (87 K) and be able to do so reliably for ten years. Following on from an earlier 180-nm prototype, we have developed a differential-output charge-sensitive preamplifier ASIC fabricated in a 65-nm process, 1×2 mm in size, that addresses these needs. Here, we present recent results from the successful testing and characterization of the first version of this device.

High-energy X-ray imaging with a Germanium MM-PAD hybrid pixel detector

Germanium is a high-Z sensor material with excellent energy resolution and attractive properties for high-energy photon detection. Despite its advantages, the need for cryogenic operation and challenges in the fabrication of pixelated high-purity germanium have hindered the development of segmented detectors. We report on the fabrication and performance of a germanium imaging detector with 150 μm pixel pitch hybridized to the MM-PAD ASIC. The detector was capable of high-resolution radiographic imaging and has a fast temporal response. Additionally, we describe the detector's upper operating temperature limits using both the MM-PAD and MARS ASICs, achieving stable operation up to 130 K and 190 K, respectively.

Improved field assessments of chemicals and explosives using high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy with a tagged neutron interrogation system

A field-portable tagged neutron interrogation system is being developed for detection of explosives and chemical warfare agents by prompt γ-ray neutron activation analysis. The system combines an associated particle imaging deuterium-tritium neutron generator with a high-purity germanium γ-ray detector. Fine spatial resolution neutron and α detectors enable precise mapping of characteristic γ-ray emission distributions onto high-clarity neutron radiographic images. A narrow coincidence gate associated with each tagged neutron ensures a large signal-to-background ratio, thus significantly improving sensitivity to the chemical compositions of the items being assessed. Recent experimental results recorded from test objects involving mock explosives and other chemicals are presented.

Evidence of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering with COHERENT’s Germanium Array

We report the first detection of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) on natural germanium, measured at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Ge-Mini detector of the COHERENT collaboration employs large-mass, low-noise, high-purity germanium spectrometers, enabling excellent energy resolution, and an analysis threshold of 1.5 keV electron-equivalent ionization energy. We observe an on-beam excess of 20.6$^{+7.1}_{−6.3}$ counts with a total exposure of 10.22 GWhkg, and we reject the no-CEvNS hypothesis with 3.9⁢𝜎 significance. The result agrees with the predicted standard model of particle physics signal rate within 2⁢𝜎.

Machine learning-powered data cleaning for LEGEND: a semi-supervised approach using affinity propagation and support vector machines

Neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) is a rare nuclear process that, if observed, will provide insight into the nature of neutrinos and help explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The large enriched germanium experiment for neutrinoless double-beta decay (LEGEND) will operate in two phases to search for $0\nu\beta\beta$. The first (second) stage will employ 200 (1000) kg of High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) enriched in 76 Ge to achieve a half-life sensitivity of 10 27 (10 28 ) years. In this study, we present a semi-supervised data-driven approach to remove non-physical events captured by HPGe detectors powered by a novel artificial intelligence model. We utilize affinity propagation to cluster waveform signals based on their shape and a support vector machine to classify them into different categories. We train, optimize, and test our model on data taken from a natural abundance HPGe detector installed in the Full Chain Test experimental stand at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We demonstrate that our model yields a maximum sacrifice of physics events of $0.024 ^{+0.004}_{-0.003} \%$ after data cleaning. Our model is being used to accelerate data cleaning development for LEGEND-200 and will serve to improve data cleaning procedures for LEGEND-1000.

Gepta-EX: a multi-channel germanium detector for X-ray absorption fine structure

Fluorescence-mode X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at high photon energies requires detectors with high stopping power and excellent energy resolution to measure weak element-specific signals. Traditional silicon-based detectors suffer from poor efficiency above ∼20 keV, while most high-Z materials such as cadmium telluride, cadmium zinc telluride, and gallium arsenide have focused predominantly on imaging applications with limited spectroscopic resolution. In contrast, germanium combines excellent stopping power with superior intrinsic energy resolution due to its low Fano factor and favorable charge transport properties, making it ideal for high-resolution spectroscopy in the 15 keV to 100 keV range. To address these requirements, we report on the development, fabrication, and performance evaluation of Gepta-EX, a compact multi-channel high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector system for fluorescence-mode XAS. The Gepta-EX system features a monolithic seven-channel HPGe pixel array integrated with low-noise CUBE charge-sensitive preamplifiers, housed within a thermally isolated compact cryostat operating near 90 K. The detector achieves energy resolutions of 218 eV at 5.9 keV (from a 55 Fe source) and 373 eV at 59.5 keV (from a 241 Am source), with uniform performance across all channels. By avoiding the escape peak interference commonly associated with silicon detectors and providing stable, high-resolution performance, Gepta-EX represents a powerful tool for high-energy X-ray spectroscopy.

Comparison of measurement techniques and sorption of radium-226 in low and high salinity aqueous samples

Human activities have the potential to redistribute radium (Ra) in the marine environment in a manner that may necessitate monitoring or management of subsequent human or environmental exposures. There is therefore a need to identify accurate and accessible techniques for Ra measurement in high salinity samples and to describe the distribution of Ra in estuarine and marine environments, but most efforts in these areas have focused on low salinity matrices. In addition, rapid and reliable measurements are crucial for time-sensitive samples such as short-lived isotopes or emergency situations. The objective of this study is to describe the limits of detection, cost, and relative ease for measurement of Ra in both low and high salinity aqueous samples via three analytical methods: liquid scintillation counting (LSC), high purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). To contextualize these measurements for real-world scenarios, the partitioning of 226 Ra to substrates relevant to the marine environment was also characterized. Although HPGe detection with solid phase extraction had the lowest limit of detection for low salinity samples (0.27 Bq L −1 ), poor 226 Ra recovery for high salinity samples and high materials costs make this method prohibitive for many users. Limits of detection for high salinity samples were lower for LSC (1.28 Bq L −1 ) than for ICP-MS without dilution (11.4 Bq L −1 ), but significant and unexpected degradation of the high salinity LSC standards was observed after six months. Furthermore, our preferred measurement method for high salinity Ra samples is ICP-MS with sample dilution as necessary to reduce matrix effects.

Characterization of the Multi-Coincident Bismuth Germanate Oxide Spectrometer at the Nuclear Counting Facility

A multi-detector γ-ray spectroscopy system including 3 high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors has been developed at the Nuclear Counting Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This system operates not only in conventional singles γ-ray detection mode but also incorporates features like coincidence and anti-coincidence techniques. These advanced detection modes can significantly enhance the system’s sensitivity, making it a powerful tool for isotope identification and quantification, especially for complex samples with high background and overlapping peaks. In this re port, we present a comprehensive performance characterization of the Multi-Coincident Bismuth Oxide Spectrometer (MCBOS) using a variety of sample types, including 60 Co, 48 Sc, and mixed fission product samples. Each sample provides unique tests for the MCBOS capabilities. Additionally, a GEANT4 model of the MCBOS has been generated to aid with the characterization of the system.
