Oxidation state of iron in plagioclase from lunar basalts.

Determination of the oxidation state of iron in the plagioclase from the coarse-grained basalts 10044 and 12021, using Mossbauer spectroscopy. The location of iron in the crystal structure was also investigated. The spectra show that iron is in the high-spin ferrous state, and they located at least two distinct positions with different coordination numbers. Some excess resonant absorption is probably due to Fe(3+), although the Fe(3+) doublet could not be positively resolved.

Theoretical studies of the transition metal-carbonyl systems MCO and M(CO)2, M = Ti, Sc, and V

Large Gaussian basis sets and an electron correlation treatment are used in ab initio calculations on the transition metal-carbonyl systems MCO and N(CO)2 for M = Ti, Sc, and V. The results show that high-spin ground states are favored for the monocarbonyl molecules, and that for the dicarbonyl molecules there is a competition between high, intermediate, and low spin states which are very close in energy. Dissociation energies of 0.62 eV for Ti-CO and 1.02 for Ti(CO)2 are found, relative to the ground state Ti atomic asymptote and CO 1Sigma(+). The binding energy per carbonyl for the three metal atoms is shown to be significantly lower for the dicarbonyl than for the the monocarbonyl molecules.

On the bonding in Mn2(+)

Qualitative calculations are presented on the Mn2(+) ion. These yield a 12Sigma(g)(+) ground state, in agreement with experiment, in which the 3d electrons are ferromagnetically coupled. The 2Sigma(u)(+) state of Mu2(+) is found to lie 0.44 eV higher in energy; the 3d electrons on each center are high-spin coupled, but the interatomic coupling is antiferromagnetic. The large splitting between the 12Sigma(g)(+) and 2Sigma(u)(+) states is shown to be due to the intraatomic 4s-3d exchange energy, which is an order of magnitude larger than the weak interatomic 3d-3d interaction. The Mn2(+) ion is compared and contrasted with the Mn2 neutral species, where the analogous 11Sigma(u)(+) and 1Sigma(g)(+) states are reversed in order, but almost degenerate.

Moessbauer spectroscopy of Mg(0.9)Fe(0.1)SiO3 perovskite

Ambient pressure Moessbauer spectra of Mg(0.9)Fe-57(0.1)SiO3 perovskite synthesized at pressure-temperature conditions of about 50 GPa and 1700 K show that the iron is entirely high-spin Fe(2+) and appears to be primarily located in the octahedral site within the crystal structure. We observe broad Moessbauer lines, suggesting a distribution of electric-field gradients caused by disorder associated with the Fe ions. Also, the perovskite exhibits magnetic ordering at temperatures lower than 5 K, implying that there is a magnetic contribution to the absolute ('third-law') entropy of this phase.

Isolation, characterization, and primary structure of rubredoxin from the photosynthetic bacterium, Heliobacillus mobilis

Rubredoxin is a small nonheme iron protein that serves as an electron carrier in bacterial systems. Rubredoxin has now been isolated and characterized from the strictly anaerobic phototroph, Heliobacillus mobilis. THe molecular mass (5671.3 Da from the amino acid sequence) was confirmed and partial formylation of the N-terminal methionyl residue was established by matrix-assisted laser desorption mass spectroscopy. The complete 52-amino-acid sequence was determined by a combination of N-terminal sequencing by Edman degradation and C-terminal sequencing by a novel method using carboxypeptidase treatment in conjunction with amino acid analysis and laser desorption time of flight mass spectrometry. The molar absorption coefficient of Hc. mobilis rubredoxin at 490 nm is 6.9 mM-1 cm-1 and the midpoint redox potential at pH 8.0 is -46 mV. The EPR spectrum of the oxidized form shows resonances at g = 9.66 and 4.30 due to a high-spin ferric iron. The amino acid sequence is homologous to those of rubredoxins from other species, in particular, the gram-positive bacteria, and the phototrophic green sulfur bacteria, and the evolutionary implications of this are discussed.
