Materials Data on Ho(BC)2 by Materials Project

HoB2C2 crystallizes in the tetragonal P4_2/mmc space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Ho is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight equivalent B and eight equivalent C atoms. All Ho–B bond lengths are 2.73 Å. All Ho–C bond lengths are 2.70 Å. B is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to four equivalent Ho and two equivalent C atoms. Both B–C bond lengths are 1.60 Å. C is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to four equivalent Ho, two equivalent B, and one C atom. The C–C bond length is 1.42 Å.

Machine learning guided discovery of superconducting calcium borocarbides

Pursuit of superconductivity in light-element systems at ambient pressure is of great experimental and theoretical interest. In this work, we combine a machine learning (ML) method with first-principles calculations to efficiently search for the energetically favorable ternary Ca-B-C compounds. Three layered borocarbides (stable CaBC 5 and metastable Ca 2 BC 11 and CaB 3 C 3 ) are predicted to be phonon-mediated superconductors at ambient pressure. The stable CaBC 5 and the low-energy metastable Ca 2 BC 11 (with formation energy only 9.5 meV/atom above the convex hull) have a superconducting T c of 5.2 and 8.9 K, respectively. While the hexagonal CaB 3 C 3 possesses a T c of 26.1 K, it is metastable with formation energy of 153 meV/atom above the convex hull. The ML-guided approach opens up a way for greatly accelerating the discovery of new high-T c superconductors.

Superconductivity in the Li-B-C system at 100 GPa

Layer Li-B-C compounds have been shown to have feasible superconductivity. Using the adaptive genetic algorithm, we predict the structures of the Li-B-C system at 100 GPa. Here we identify several low-enthalpy metallic phases with stoichiometries of Li B 2 C, Li B 3 C, Li 2 BC 2 , Li 3 B 2 C 3 , Li 3 BC, and Li 5 BC. Using a fast screening method of electron-phonon interaction, we find that Li B 3 C is a promising candidate for superconductivity. The consecutive calculations using the full Brillouin zone confirm the existence of the strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in this system. The anharmonic B-C phonon modes near the zone center provide the major contribution to the EPC. The EPC constant is 1.40, and the estimated critical temperature is 22 K. In this paper, we indicate that superconductivity can also happen without a layered structural motif in the Li-B-C system. We also demonstrate an effective strategy for crystal structure prediction of superconducting materials.

Cyclone Fani: the tug-of-war between regional warming and anthropogenic aerosol effects

Before Cyclone Amphan took place in 2020, Cyclone Fani (May 2019) is the strongest pre-monsoon cyclone in the Bay of Bengal (BOB) since 1991, killing 90 people in eastern India and Bangladesh while causing US$1.81 billion of damages. Fani developed during a period of high concentration of anthropogenic aerosols in the BOB with abnormally high sea surface temperature (SST), thereby presenting an opportunity to understand the compound effects of atmospheric aerosols and regional climate warming on a tropical cyclone. A quantitative attribution analysis was conducted using the Weather Research and Forecasting model with chemistry (WRF-Chem) run at the convection-permitting (4 km) grid spacing, accompanied by an ensemble of coarser-resolution simulations to quantify the uncertainty. The removal of post-1990 trends in the tropospheric variables and SST from WRF-Chem's initial conditions (IC) and boundary conditions (BC, including the lateral and lower boundary conditions) resulted in a reduction of cyclone precipitation by about 51% during the 5 d of April 28-May 2. The removal of tropospheric warming shows approximately twice as strong an effect on Fani (39% reduction in precipitation) as that of SST warming (22% reduction). When aerosol's direct and indirect effects were removed from the simulations, i.e., no aerosol influence on radiation and cloud microphysics, Fani initially strengthened but later weakened, as measured by geopotential height and precipitation amounts. These results suggest that aerosol and its interaction with the atmosphere acted to mitigate the strengthening effect of anthropogenic warming on Fani, but was not strong enough to entirely counteract it. Although the ensemble of coarser simulations appears to overestimate Cyclone Fani in terms of precipitation, the direction of the effects is in agreement with that obtained from the 4 km simulations. Given the increasing anthropogenic aerosols in the BOB, future attribution studies using more sophisticated dynamical aerosol models on BOB tropical cyclones are urged.
