Coarse-grained fixed-point tensor networks and holographic reflected entropy in 3D gravity

We use the framework of fixed-point BCFT tensor networks to present a microscopic CFT derivation of the correspondence between reflected entropy (RE) and entanglement wedge cross section (EW) in AdS 3 /CFT 2 , for both bipartite and multipartite settings. These fixed-point tensor networks, obtained by triangulating Euclidean CFT path integrals, allow us to explicitly construct the canonical purification via cutting-and-gluing CFT path integrals. Employing modular flow in the large-c limit, we demonstrate that these intrinsic CFT manipulations reproduce bulk geometric prescriptions, without assuming the AdS/CFT dictionary. The emergence of bulk geometry is traced to coarse-graining over heavy states in the large-c limit. Universal coarse-grained BCFT data for compact 2D CFTs, through the relation to Liouville theory with ZZ boundary conditions, yields hyperbolic geometry on the Cauchy slice. The corresponding averaged replica partition functions reproduce all candidate EWs, arising from different averaging patterns, with the dominant one providing the correct RE and EW. In this way, many heuristic tensor-network intuitions in toy models are made precise and established directly from intrinsic CFT data.

Spatially programmed alignment and actuation in printed liquid crystal elastomers

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) exhibit reversible shape morphing behavior when cycled above their nematic-to-isotropic transition temperature. During extrusion-based 3D printing, LCE inks are subjected to coupled shear and extensional flows that can be harnessed to spatially control the alignment of their nematic director along prescribed print paths. Here, we combine experiment and modeling to elucidate the effects of ink composition, nozzle geometry, and printing parameters on director alignment. From rheological measurements, we quantify the dimensionless Weissenberg number ( Wi ) for the flow field each ink experiences as a function of printing conditions and demonstrate that Wi is a strong predictor of LCE alignment. We find that director alignment in LCE filaments printed through a tapered nozzle varies radially when Wi < 1, while it is uniform when Wi ≫ 1. Based on COMSOL simulations and in operando X-ray measurements, we show that LCE inks printed through nozzles with an internal hyperbolic geometry exhibit a more uniform director alignment for a given Wi compared to those through tapered nozzles. Concomitantly, the stiffness along the print direction and actuation strain of printed LCEs increases substantially under such conditions. By varying Wi during printing through adjusting the flow rate “on the fly”, LCE architectures with uniform composition, yet locally encoded shape morphing transitions can be realized.

Hyperbolic vacua in Minkowski space

Families of Lorentz, but not Poincare, invariant vacua are constructed for a massless scalar field in 4D Minkowski space. These are generalizations of the Rindler vacuum with a larger symmetry group. Explicit expressions are given as squeezed excitations of the Poincare vacuum. The effective reduced vacua on the 3D hyperbolic de Sitter slices are the well-known de Sitter α-vacua with antipodal singularities in the Wightman function. Several special interesting cases are discussed.

Discontinuity in RG flows across dimensions: entanglement, anomaly coefficients and geometry

We study the entanglement entropy associated with a holographic RG flow from AdS 7 to AdS 4 × $\mathbb{H}$ 3 , where $\mathbb{H}$ 3 is a 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifold with curvature κ. The dual six-dimensional RG flow is disconnected from Lorentz-invariant flows. In this context we address various notions of central charges and identify a monotonic candidate c-function that captures IR aspects of the flow. The UV behavior of the holographic entanglement entropy and, in particular its universal term, display an interesting dependence on the curvature, κ. We then contrast our holographic results with existing field theory computations in six dimensions and find a series of new corrections in curvature to the universal term in the entanglement entropy.

Fermions, quantum gravity, and holography in two dimensions

We study a model comprising N flavors of Kähler Dirac fermion propagating on a triangulated two-dimensional disk which is constrained to have a negative average bulk curvature. Dirichlet boundary conditions are chosen for the fermions. Quantum fluctuations of the geometry are included by summing over all possible triangulations consistent with these constraints. We show in the limit N → ∞ that the partition function is dominated by a regular triangulation of two-dimensional hyperbolic space. We use strong coupling expansions and Monte Carlo simulation to show that in this limit boundary correlators of the fermions have a power law dependence on boundary separation as one expects from holography. However, we argue that this behavior breaks down for any finite number of massive fields in the thermodynamic limit and quantum fluctuations of the bulk geometry drive the theory into a nonholographic phase. In contrast, for massless fermions, we find evidence that the boundary is conformal even for finite N . This is consistent with theoretical results in quantum Liouville theory. Medial axis and local thickness computation using the Fast Sweeping Method

This report describes an efficient and robust voxel-based methodology for computing the medial axis, local thickness, and distance-to-skeleton of arbitrary three-dimensional geometries. It is assumed that the object can be represented by an exact or approximate signed distance function on a discrete grid. The gradient of such function is used to formulate a hyperbolic partial differential equation (PDE) that models the collapse of the position vector in space. By exploiting the causality property of the PDE, the Fast Sweeping Method is able to obtain the solution in a finite number of sweeps independent of the mesh resolution. The intersection of characteristic lines leads to the formation of shocks and a discrete bisector function is used to identify the medial axis. The same PDE approach is used to compute the local thickness inside the object and obtain the distance-to-skeleton field. Multiple examples are given in two and three dimensions along with a resolution study. The methodology has optimal complexity and yields subsecond computational times for geometries with over a million zones on a single core. The methodology is also capable of parallelization across shared and distributed memory architectures.

Effective Polarizability in Near-Field Microscopy of Phonon-Polariton Resonances

We investigate the resonant characteristics of planar surfaces and distinct edges of structures with the excitation of phonon-polaritons. We analyze two materials supporting phonon-polariton excitations in the mid-infrared spectrum: silicon carbide, characterized by an almost isotropic dielectric constant, and hexagonal boron nitride, notable for its pronounced anisotropy in a spectral region exhibiting hyperbolic dispersion. We formulate a theoretical framework that accurately captures the excitations of the structure involving phonon-polaritons, predicts the response in scattering-type near-field optical microscopy, and is effective for complex resonant geometries where the locations of hot spots are uncertain. We account for the tapping motion of the probe, perform analysis for different heights of the probe, and demodulate the signal using a fast Fourier transform. Using this Fourier demodulation analysis, we show that light enhancement across the entire apex is the most accurate characteristic for describing the response of all resonant excitations and hot spots. We demonstrate that computing the demodulation orders of light enhancement in the microscope probe accurately predicts its imaging.

Looking at extremal black holes from very far away

Near-extremal black holes are subject to large quantum effects, which modify their low-temperature thermodynamic behavior. Hitherto, these quantum effects were analyzed by separating the geometry into the near-horizon region and its exterior. It is desirable to understand and reproduce such corrections from the full higher-dimensional asymptotically flat or AdS geometry’s perspective. We address this question in this article and fill this gap. Specifically, we find off-shell eigenmodes of the quadratic fluctuation operator of the Euclidean gravitational dynamics, with eigenvalues that vanish linearly with temperature. We illustrate this for BTZ and neutral black holes with hyperbolic horizons in AdS in Einstein-Hilbert theory, and for the charged black holes in Einstein-Maxwell theory. The linear scaling with Matsubara frequency, which is a distinctive feature of the modes, together with the fact that their wavefunctions localize close to the horizon as we approach extremality, identifies them as responsible for the aforementioned quantum effects. We provide a contour prescription to deal with the sign indefiniteness of the Euclidean Einstein-Maxwell action, which we derive to aid our analysis. We also resolve a technical puzzle regarding modes associated with rotational isometries in stationary black hole spacetimes.

One-loop integrals from volumes of orthoschemes

Recently in arXiv:2012.05599 Rudenko presented a formula for the volume of hyperbolic orthoschemes in terms of alternating polylogarithms. We use this result to provide an explicit analytic result for the one-loop scalar n -gon Feynman integral in n dimensions, for even n , with massless or massive internal and external edges. Furthermore, we evaluate the general six-dimensional hexagon integral in terms of classical polylogarithms.

Celestial leaf amplitudes

Celestial amplitudes may be decomposed as weighted integrals of AdS 3 -Witten diagrams associated to each leaf of a hyperbolic foliation of spacetime. We show, for the Kleinian three-point MHV amplitude, that each leaf subamplitude is smooth except for the expected light-cone singularities. Moreover, we find that the full translationally-invariant celestial amplitude is simply the residue of the pole in the leaf amplitude at the point where the total conformal weights of the gluons equals three. This full celestial amplitude vanishes up to light-cone contact terms, as required by spacetime translation invariance, and reduces to the expression previously derived by Mellin transformation of the Parke-Taylor formula.
