Combined chlorine dioxide–membrane distillation for the treatment of produced water

Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising technique for desalinating hypersaline brine, such as produced water (PW). To date, fouling and scaling have remained as major challenges for MD implementation. In this study, chlorine dioxide combined with induced air floatation (ClO 2 -IAF) was systematically investigated as a pretreatment prior to MD. First, the ClO 2 generation based on sodium chlorite and hydrochloric acid was optimized to maximize the on-demand ClO 2 production. The maximum production yield of 18.4% was obtained with 4wt.% NaClO 2 and 20wt.% HCl solutions, with a molar ratio of 1:1.25. Then, two real PW samples were pretreated, and removal efficiencies for total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, iron, and total organic carbon (TOC) were comprehensively studied by varying the ClO 2 dosage between 6 and 91 mg/L. The ClO 2 -IAF pretreatment displayed TSS and turbidity removals above 90% and TOC removal close to 55%. Further, the PW constituents such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX), and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) were analyzed and quantified throughout the cascade of the treatments. The volatiles like BTEX were mainly removed by air floatation, while saturated hydrocarbons such as TPH were retained by the hydrophobic membrane. The MD long-term stability without any in-place cleaning was evaluated, and the membrane withstood for twenty two days without wetting, suggesting that optimizing oxidation pretreatment is critical for mitigating the fouling in MD. Results suggest that organic fouling in PW could be effectively reduced by the pretreatment, but further treatment is required to mitigate the scaling, which resulted in MD wetting.

The properties of the nitrogen-vacancy center in milled chemical vapor deposition nanodiamonds

Fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) containing negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV − ) centers are vital for many emerging quantum sensing applications from magnetometry to intracellular sensing in biology. However, developing a scalable fabrication method for FNDs hosting color centers with consistent bulk-like photoluminescence (PL) and spin coherence properties remains a highly desired but unrealized goal. Here, we investigate optimized ball milling of single-crystal diamonds produced via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and containing 2 ppm of substitutional nitrogen and 0.3 ppm of NV − to achieve this goal. The NV charge state, PL lifetime, and spin properties of bulk CVD diamond samples are directly compared to milled CVD FNDs and commercial high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) FNDs. We find that on average, the relative contribution of the NV − charge state to the total NV PL is lower and the NV PL lifetime is longer in CVD FNDs compared to HPHT FNDs, both likely due to the lower N s 0 concentration in CVD FNDs. The CVD bulk and CVD FNDs on average show similar average T 1 spin relaxation times of 3.2 ± 0.7 ms and 4.7 ± 1.6 ms, respectively, compared to 0.17 ± 0.01 ms for commercial HPHT FNDs. Our results demonstrate that ball milling of CVD diamonds enables the large-scale fabrication of NV ensembles in FNDs with bulk-like T 1 spin relaxation properties.

Energy Spectrum of Ultrahigh-Energy Cosmic Rays across Declinations -90° to +44.8° as Measured at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays above 2.5 EeV has been measured across the declination range - 9 0 ° ≤ δ ≤ + 44.8 ° using ∼ 310 000 events accrued at the Pierre Auger Observatory from an exposure of ( 104 900 ± 3 100 ) km 2 sr yr . No significant variations of energy spectra with declination are observed, after allowing or not for nonuniformities across the sky arising from the well-established dipolar anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. Here, the instep feature in the spectrum at ≃ 10 EeV reported previously is now established at a significance above 5 σ . Within the statistics, the energy spectra are indistinguishable across declinations so disfavoring an origin for the instep from a few distinctive sources.

Non-Gaussian Generalized Two-Mode Squeezing: Applications to Two-Ensemble Spin Squeezing and Beyond

Bosonic two-mode squeezed states are paradigmatic entangled Gaussian states that have wide utility in quantum information and metrology. Here, in this study, we show that the basic structure of these states can be generalized to arbitrary bipartite quantum systems in a manner that allows simultaneous, Heisenberg-limited estimation of two independent parameters for finite-dimensional systems. Further, we show that these general states can always be stabilized by a relatively simple Markovian dissipative process. In the specific case where the two subsystems are ensembles of two-level atoms or spins, our generalized states define a notion of two-mode spin squeezing that is valid beyond the Gaussian limit and that enables true multiparameter estimation. We discuss how generalized Ramsey measurements allow one to reach the two-parameter quantum Cramér-Rao bound, and how the dissipative preparation scheme is compatible with current experiments.
