INDEN Fissile Actinide Issues [Slides]

This presentation addresses the outlook for the International Nuclear Data Evaluation Network (INDEN), specifically regarding general issues that have been solved, including Thermal Neutron Constants (TNC) and Prompt Fission Neutron Spectra (PFNS). Other topics discussed include outstanding issues in fissile evaluations, comments on the RPI quasi-differential experiment, and reaction rate testing of trial evaluations in fast assemblies. The presentation concludes by discussing how INDEN interactions strongly helped to find deficiencies in existing evaluations and highlighted potential solutions to existing challenges, that updated trial evaluations for U-235, U-233, Pu-239 are available for testing, that further work is expected on U-235, Pu-239, and U-233, and that performance was tested on the ICSBEP and/or SINBAD benchmarks, during which significant improvement was demonstrated. The INDEN scheme of international collaboration on nuclear data evaluation is working well.

Synthesis and anti-inflammatory activity of 1,2-3-substituted 2a1,4,5-triazacyclopenta[cd]indene derivatives

The present study reports the synthesis of 1,2-3-substituted-2a1,4,5-triazacyclopenta[cd]indene derivatives. The synthetic methodology includes some of the prominent reaction steps as specified in sequence (i) Bromination of acetophenones (ii) Condensation of 2-bromo-1-(substituted phenyl) ethanone derivatives with 2-aminopyrimidine, and (iii) Coupling of imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine derivatives with 1,2-diaryl/diaklylethynes. The structures of the newly synthesized derivatives have been determined by {sup 1}H NMR, {sup 13}C NMR, LC-MS, and IR spectral analysis. Furthermore, these derivatives were screened for their preliminary anti-inflammatory activities using Carrageenan induced paw edema test method. These promising screening results suggested a huge potential for the molecular diversity from present compounds that can be inflated to better lead candidates.

Scission of the Five-Membered Ring in 1- H -Inden-1-one C 9 H 6 O and Indenyl C 9 H 7 in the Reactions with H and O Atoms

Quantum chemical G3(MP2,CC)//B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) calculations of the C 9 H 7 O potential energy surface were utilized to investigate the mechanism of the 1-H-inden-1-one (C 9 H 6 O) + H and indenyl (C 9 H 7 ) + O reactions and were combined with Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus Master Equation (RRKM-ME) calculations to predict temperature- and pressure-dependent reaction rate constants and product branching ratios. The most favorable reaction pathways for C 9 H 6 O + H lead to the bimolecular C 8 H 7 + CO products, which are slightly endothermic with respect to the reactants. The reaction begins with H addition to the ortho or meta C atoms in the five-membered ring, C 9 H 6 O + H → w2/w3, and then proceeds by isomerization to w1, (w3 →) w2 → w1. From thereon, the w1 → w9 → w8 → p1 and w2 → w8 → p1 pathways lead to ortho-vinyl phenyl + CO, whereas w1 → w10 → w11 → p2 and C 9 H 6 O + H → w10 → w11 → p2 produce styrenyl + CO. The results of the RRKM-ME calculations showed that only the well-skipping C 9 H 6 O + H → C 8 H 7 (p1/p2) + CO mechanism is relevant under combustion conditions. A comparison with a smaller prototype 2,4-cyclopentadienone + H → C 4 H 5 + CO reaction demonstrated that the H atom is a less efficient destroyer of a cyclopentadienone-like moiety when this moiety is linked to an aromatic or a PAH structure. The C 9 H 7 + O reaction begins with highly exothermic barrierless addition of the oxygen atom to the radical site in the five-membered ring of indenyl producing w1 and then, the reaction mostly proceeds by β-scission in the five-membered ring, which may be preceded by H migration to w2 or w10, and completes by the CO loss forming the highly exothermic C 8 H 7 radical products. Modified Arrhenius expressions for the rate constants of all reactions pertinent to the formation of C 8 H 7 + CO from C 9 H 6 O + H, C 9 H 7 + H, and unimolecular decomposition of benzopyranyl have been generated and suggested for combustion kinetic modeling. Furthermore, it is concluded that the oxidation reactions of a five-membered ring with atomic oxygen remain fast in the presence of attached or surrounding six-membered rings.

Radical–Radical Reactions in Molecular Weight Growth: The Phenyl + Propargyl Reaction

The mechanism for hydrocarbon ring growth in sooting environments is still the subject of considerable debate. The reaction of phenyl radical (C 6 H 5 ) with propargyl radical (H 2 CCCH) provides an important prototype for radical–radical ring-growth pathways. We studied this reaction experimentally over the temperature range of 300–1000 K and pressure range of 4–10 Torr using time-resolved multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry. We detect both the C 9 H 8 and C 9 H 7 + H product channels and report experimental isomer-resolved product branching fractions for the C 9 H 8 product. We compare these experiments to theoretical kinetics predictions from a recently published study augmented by new calculations. Here, these ab initio transition state theory-based master equation calculations employ high-quality potential energy surfaces, conventional transition state theory for the tight transition states, and direct CASPT2-based variable reaction coordinate transition state theory (VRC-TST) for the barrierless channels. At 300 K only the direct adducts from radical–radical addition are observed, with good agreement between experimental and theoretical branching fractions, supporting the VRC-TST calculations of the barrierless entrance channel. As the temperature is increased to 1000 K we observe two additional isomers, including indene, a two-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and a small amount of bimolecular products C 9 H 7 + H. Our calculated branching fractions for the phenyl + propargyl reaction predict significantly less indene than observed experimentally. We present further calculations and experimental evidence that the most likely cause of this discrepancy is the contribution of H atom reactions, both H + indenyl (C 9 H 7 ) recombination to indene and H-assisted isomerization that converts less stable C 9 H 8 isomers into indene. Especially at low pressures typical of laboratory investigations, H-atom-assisted isomerization needs to be considered. Regardless, the experimental observation of indene demonstrates that the title reaction leads, either directly or indirectly, to the formation of the second ring in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

CSEWG Meeting Minutes

Work has been done at LANL to validate various updated evaluations from ENDF/BVIII.1b0 including: Fe, Cu, Si, U, Pu. Continuous energy tables were processed with NJOY2016 and output to ACE files. For non-Pu legacy critical benchmarks, all calculations were within the experimental benchmark uncertainty, with some benchmarks having shown lower bias using ENDF/B-VIII.1b0. In HST systems, ENDF/B-VIII.0 shows reasonable results above the thermal leakage fraction. ENDF/B-VIII.0.1 is doing slightly worse than ENDF/B- VIII.0. b0.2 and it also includes a new 19 F evaluation, so more work is needed to examine its impact. 233 U thermal and intermediate bare and water-reflected benchmarks agree well with ENDF/B-VIII.0. From ENDF/B-VIII.0 to ENDF/B-VIII.0b0.1, HMF-007 C/E are increasing and the new 19 F evaluation is helping the HMF-007 cases containing Teflon which have historically had high C/E. The Pu legacy benchmark suite is within experimental uncertainty with the exception of THOR. The INDEN evaluation followed by LANL gave the lowest mean absolute bias, but it remains difficult to make a determination on which Pu evaluation is the best. INDEN performs slightly better for the JEZEBEL series, while the LANL Pu evaluation is better for THOR and flattop benchmarks. For the PMI benchmark series INDEN outperforms the LLNL evaluation. For the PST benchmark series ENDF/B-VIII.0 and LLNL Pu evaluations are better than the INDEN evaluation. C/E ratios for Jezebel and Godiva reaction rate ratios show all the Pu evaluations are very close to one another, making it again difficult to say which is best. When examining neutron reactor kinetics parameters, each Pu evaluation is once again very close. Each individual Pu evaluation seems to have advantages in their own applications.

Gas phase formation of cyclopentanaphthalene (benzindene) isomers via reactions of 5- and 6-indenyl radicals with vinylacetylene

The tricyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) 3H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene (C 13 H 10 ), 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene (C 13 H 10 ) and 1H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene (C 13 H 10 ) along with their indene-based bicyclic isomers (E)-5-(but-1-en-3-yn-1-yl)-1H-indene, (E)-6-(but-1-en-3-yn-1-yl)-1H-indene, 5-(but-3-ene-1-yn-1-yl)-1H-in-dene, and 6-(but-3-ene-1-yn-1-yl)-1H-indene were formed via a “directed synthesis” in a high-temperature chemical micro reactor at the temperature of 1300 ± 10 K through the reactions of the 5- and 6-indenyl radicals (C 9 H 7 ˙) with vinylacetylene (C 4 H 4 ). The isomer distributions were probed utilizing tunable vacuum ultraviolet light by recording the photoionization efficiency curves at mass-to-charge of m/z = 166 (C 13 H 10 ) and 167 ( 13 CC 12 H 10 ) of the products in a supersonic molecular beam. Here, the underlying reaction mechanisms involve the initial formation of van-der-Waals complexes followed by addition of the 5- and 6-indenyl radicals to vinylacetylene via submerged barriers, followed by isomerization (hydrogen shifts, ring closures), and termination via atomic hydrogen elimination accompanied by aromatization. All the barriers involved in the formation of 3H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene, 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene and 1H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene are submerged with respect to the reactants indicating that the mechanisms are in fact barrierless, potentially forming PAHs via the hydrogen abstraction – vinylacetylene addition (HAVA) pathway in the cold molecular clouds such as Taurus Molecular Cloud-1 (TMC-1) at temperatures as low as 10 K.

Theoretical Study of the Reaction Mechanism and Kinetics of the Phenyl + Allyl and Related Benzyl + Vinyl Associations

Potential energy surfaces for the allyl + phenyl and benzyl + vinyl barrierless radical association reactions have been studied at the CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVTZ-f12//B3LYP/6-311G** level of theory. Variable reaction coordinate transition state theory (VRC-TST) has been employed to evaluate high-pressure limit rate constants for the barrierless channels. Then, Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus master equation (RRKM-ME) calculations have been performed to assess phenomenological rate constants and product branching ratios of various reaction channels at different temperatures and pressures. The initial step of both radical association reactions produces 3-phenylpropene which can further dissociate into a variety of bimolecular products including the indene precursor 1-phenylallyl + H. The results showed that at typical combustion conditions the collisional stabilization of 3-phenylpropene dominates both the phenyl + allyl and benzyl + vinyl reactions at temperatures below 1000 K and remains important at high pressures up to 2500 K. The main bimolecular products of the two reactions at high temperatures are predicted to be benzyl + vinyl and phenyl + allyl, respectively. The well-skipping mechanism to form 1-phenylallyl directly in the allyl + phenyl and benzyl + vinyl reactions appeared to be not significant, however, the reactions can provide some contributions into the formation of the indene precursor via the 3-phenylpropene stabilization/dissociation sequence and most of all, via the formation of 3-phenylpropene itself, which then can undergo H-abstraction by available radicals to produce 1-phenylallyl. The allyl + phenyl reaction can also contribute to the formation of two-ring PAH by producing benzyl radical at high temperatures, either by the well-skipping or stabilization/dissociation mechanisms; in turn, benzyl can readily react with acetylene or propargyl radical to form indene or naphthalene precursors, respectively. Finally, rate expressions for all important reaction channels in a broad range of temperatures and pressures have been generated for kinetic modeling.

How to add a five-membered ring to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) – molecular mass growth of the 2-naphthyl radical (C 10 H 7 ) to benzindenes (C 13 H 10 ) as a case study

The three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) 3 H -benz[ e ]indene (C 13 H 10 ) and 1 H -benz[ f ]indene (C 13 H 10 ) along with their naphthalene-based isomers 2-(prop-2-yn-1-yl)naphthalene (C 13 H 10 ), 2-(prop-1-yn-1-yl)naphthalene (C 13 H 10 ), and 2-(propa-1,2-dien-1-yl)naphthalene (C 13 H 10 ) were formed through a “directed synthesis” via a high temperature chemical micro reactor under combustion-like conditions (1300 ± 35 K) through the reactions of the 2-naphthyl isomer (C 10 H 7 ˙) with allene (C 3 H 4 ) and methylacetylene (C 3 H 4 ). The isomer distributions were probed utilizing tunable vacuum ultraviolet radiation from the Advanced Light Source (ALS) by recording the photoionization efficiency curves at mass-to-charge of m / z = 166 (C 13 H 10 ) and 167 ( 13 CC 12 H 10 ) of the products in a supersonic molecular beam. Complemented by electronic structure calculations, our study reveals critical mass growth processes via annulation of a five-membered ring from the reaction between aryl radicals and distinct C 3 H 4 isomers at elevated temperatures as present in combustion processes and in circumstellar envelopes of carbon stars. The underlying reaction mechanisms proceed through the initial addition of the 2-naphthyl radical with its radical center to the π-electron density of the allene and methylacetylene reactants via entrance barriers between 8 and 14 kJ mol -1 , followed by isomerization (hydrogen shifts, ring closure), and termination via atomic hydrogen losses accompanied by aromatization. The reaction mechanisms reflect the formation of indene – the prototype PAH carrying a single five- and a single six-membered ring – synthesized through the reaction of the phenyl radical (C 6 H 5 ˙) with allene and methylacetylene. In conclusion, this leads us to predict that aryl radicals – upon reaction with allene/methylacetylene – may undergo molecular mass growth processes via ring annulation and de facto addition of a five-membered ring to form molecular building blocks essential to transit planar PAHs out of the plane.
