Design of Critical Experiments Involving Graphite elements at the IPEN/MB-01 Plate-Type Core

A series of critical experiments were designed involving the use of characterized graphite elements in the new plate-type core of the IPEN/MB-01 reactor. Eleven configurations with different graphite quantities are considered, each producing distinct effects on neutron fluxes and offering opportunities to analyze varying sensitivities to k eff in the system. The analysis shows that the experiments can be performed with acceptably low k eff uncertainties considering an adequate characterization of the graphite elements to be used. The sensitivity results obtained using SCALE TSUNAMI calculations show that the experiments have a notable k eff sensitivity coefficient to graphite. In the configurations tested, the k eff sensitivity to graphite TSL is low. This experiment will be useful for criticality safety validation of applications using uranium fuel enriched to around 19.75 wt % 235 U, light water and graphite. It will also be useful to gain more insight into graphite material properties and their effect on k eff as a result of using the well-characterized graphite elements. The execution of the experiments is planned for the summer of 2025. The 11 designed configurations serve as a basis for the final design, and fewer configurations will be executed. Once executed, these critical experiments will be evaluated and submitted for publication in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project Handbook, supporting the DOE/NRC Collaboration for Criticality Safety Support for Commercial-Scale HALEU for Fuel Cycles and Transportation project goal.

Preservation of kinetics parameters generated by Monte Carlo calculations in two-step deterministic calculations

The generation of accurate kinetic parameters such as mean generation time Λ and effective delayed neutron fraction β eff via Monte Carlo codes is established. Employing these in downstream deterministic codes warrants another step to ensure no additional error is introduced by the low-order transport operator when computing forward and adjoint fluxes for bilinear weighting of these parameters. Another complexity stems from applying superhomogenization (SPH) equivalence in non-fundamental mode approximations, where reference and low-order calculations rely on a 3D full core model. In these cases, SPH factors can optionally be computed for only part of the geometry while preserving reaction rates and K-effective, but the impact of such approximations on kinetics parameters has not been thoroughly studied. This paper aims at studying the preservation of bilinearly-weighted quantities in the Serpent–Griffin calculation procedure. Diffusion and transport evaluations of IPEN/MB-01, Godiva, and Flattop were carried out with the Griffin reactor physics code, testing available modeling options using Serpent-generated multigroup cross sections and equivalence data. Verifying Griffin against Serpent indicates sensitivities to multigroup energy grid selection and regional application of SPH equivalence, introducing significant errors; these were demonstrated to be reduced through the use of a transport method together with a finer energy grid.

Validation of MPACT BWR capabilities against critical experiments

Over the years, significant validation work for the neutronics code MPACT has been performed against zero-power critical benchmarks and measured data from operating nuclear power plants. As a part of the Modeling and Analysis of Exelon BWRs for Eigenvalue and Thermal Limits Predictability project, new validation efforts relevant to boiling water reactor (BWR) core applications have been performed. This paper presents the results of the critical experiment portion of the BWR validation efforts for MPACT. The Kritz-4 experiments and IPEN/MB-01 BWR-relevant configurations are modeled with MPACT. The Kritz-4 BWR critical experiments were performed at both cold and hot conditions, which is a unique feature among other critical experiment facilities. The MPACT results with linear source (LS) Method of Characteristics (MOC) have very good agreement with the measured criticality. When using the 60-group BWR library with LS and P2 scattering, the maximum k{sub eff} error is 109 pcm, and the average cold-hot bias is only -0.11 pcm/K. The fission rate distributions of MPACT are also verified with Serpent calculations. For the IPEN facility, two configurations are considered: one with a large central void, and one with a cruciform control rod. The MPACT k{sub eff} errors are less than 50 pcm for all IPEN problems. ICSBEP evaluation lessons learned and good practice

This document describes lessons learned during my nearly 20 years of experience in International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) meetings and in the development of several evaluations employing the IPEN/MB-01 reactor. The evaluations cover a wide range of possible configurations at the reactor core of this facility. Most of the evaluations are related to critical configurations, although two of them concern subcritical measurements. Examples of the evaluations submitted and approved for ICSBEP publication are the critical configurations employed in the standard core; critical configurations employing heavy reflectors composed of stainless steel, nickel, and carbon steel; and critical configurations employing the standard fuel rods and fuel rods composed of UO 2 -Gd 2 O 3 , among several others. Additionally, this document addresses good practices for the development of ICSBEP evaluations; the intention is to help beginners who are going to start evaluations for ICSBEP. The sections of the ICSBEP evaluation are described and illustrated with several examples.
