Barium ion sensing with IPG K + molecular probes

Fluorophores covalently bound to azacrown ether ionophores can be assembled into sensitive turn-on chemosensors. The size specificity and electron-rich nature of the ionophore's binding domain contribute to both selectivity and strong turn-on fluorescence sensing by various mechanisms when properly constructed. Aza-18-crown-6 ethers are quite selective for binding to K + and Ba 2+ , yet the more electron-withdrawing dicationic nature of barium imposes a larger electronic effect on turn-on fluorescent sensors. Barium chemosensors can be important for measuring soluble Ba 2+ in drinking water and have gained recent attention for their potential to enhance the detection of rare events in xenon decay. Here we quantify the capability of three chemosensors, marketed for biologically useful K + sensing, as effective probes for Ba 2+ ions. Here, we present measurements from bulk spectrofluorometry to characterize the system in aqueous solutions and demonstrate the usefulness of these species for low-background single-ion fluorescence microscopy, revealing new candidates for Ba 2+ sensing.

Enhancing traffic safety analysis with digital twin technology: integrating vehicle dynamics and environmental factors into microscopic traffic simulation

Traffic safety is a critical concern in transportation engineering and urban planning. Traditional traffic safety analysis requires trained observers to collect data in the field, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and sometimes inaccurate. In recent years, microscopic traffic simulation, which simulates individual vehicles’ movements within a transportation network, have been utilized to study traffic safety. However, microscopic traffic simulation only focuses on traffic-related factors, such as traffic volume, traffic signals, and lane configurations, neglecting vehicle dynamics and environment-related factors like weather and lighting conditions, which can significantly impact traffic safety. In light of this, this paper explores the application of digital twin technology in traffic safety analysis, integrating vehicle simulators, which consider vehicle dynamics and environmental factors, and microscopic traffic simulators, which simulate the operations of traffic flow, for enhanced safety evaluations. Various scenarios, including different weather conditions and visibility levels, are simulated using a digital twin of a road segment in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The simulations employ Surrogate Safety Measures (SSMs) like Time to Collision (TTC) and Deceleration Rate to Avoid a Crash (DRAC) to assess safety under varying conditions. The results demonstrate that traffic digital twin can identify potential safety issues that traditional microscopic simulation cannot, providing insights for improving traffic control strategies and transportation infrastructure to enhance traffic safety.

Supercontinuum generation in oxide and semiconductor materials (InP, Si, GaN, GaAs, PbMoO 4 , YVO 4 , ZGP, TiO 2 , diamond) pumped by radiation of the Cr:ZnS fs-MOPA system

Ultrashort light sources in the middle-infrared range are highly beneficial for applications such as gas molecular spectroscopy, remote sensing, atmospheric science, medical treatments, and light–matter interaction studies. Ultrafast lasers utilizing chromium-doped ZnS/Se (Cr:ZnS/Se) have proven to be robust and stable solutions within this spectral region. Nonlinear spectral broadening is fundamentally important, as it pushes the pulse duration limits imposed by the bandwidth of laser media. In this study, we demonstrate the spectral broadening and supercontinuum generation in several bulk materials, including InP, Si, GaN, GaAs, PbMoO 4 , YVO 4 , diamond, and TiO 2 , using pump radiation with up to 4 W average power centered at 2.35 µm from a Cr:ZnS femtosecond MOPA system. Some of the investigated materials have excellent potential as effective media for middle-infrared supercontinuum generation, demonstrating the feasibility of developing a single-cycle pulse middle-infrared laser system.
