Search for Rare Decays of D s + to Final States π + e + e − , ρ + e + e − , π + π 0 e + e − , K + π 0 e + e − , and K S 0 π + e + e −

Using 7.33 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies in the range of s = 4.128 – 4.226 GeV , we search for the rare decays D s + → h + ( h 0 ) e + e − , where h represents a kaon or pion. By requiring the e + e − invariant mass to be consistent with a ϕ ( 1020 ) , 0.98 < M ( e + e − ) < 1.04 GeV / c 2 , the decay D s + → π + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − is observed with a statistical significance of 7.8 σ , and evidence for the decay D s + → ρ + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − is found for the first time with a statistical significance of 4.4 σ . The decay branching fractions are measured to be B ( D s + → π + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − ) = ( 1.1 7 − 0.21 + 0.23 ± 0.03 ) × 10 − 5 , and B ( D s + → ρ + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − ) = ( 2.4 4 − 0.62 + 0.67 ± 0.16 ) × 10 − 5 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. No significant signals for the three four-body decays of D s + → π + π 0 e + e − , D s + → K + π 0 e + e − , and D s + → K S 0 π + e + e − are observed. For D s + → π + π 0 e + e − , the ϕ mass region is vetoed to minimize the long-distance effects. The 90% confidence level upper limits set on the branching fractions of these decays are in the range of ( 7.0 – 8.1 ) × 10 − 5 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

By analyzing e + e − annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.93 fb − 1 , collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we search for the semileptonic decays D 0 → K − η e + ν e , D + → K S 0 η e + ν e and D + → η η e + ν e for the first time. We present evidence for D 0 → K − η e + ν e with a significance of 3.3 σ . The branching fraction of D 0 → K − η e + ν e is measured to be ( 0.8 4 − 0.34 + 0.29 ± 0.22 ) × 10 − 4 . No significant signals are observed for the decays D + → K S 0 η e + ν e and D + → η η e + ν e and we set the upper limits on their branching fractions. Abstract By analyzinge + e − annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb −1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, the first observation of the semileptonic decays$$ {D}^0\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ D 0 → K S 0 π − π 0 e + ν e and$$ {D}^{+}\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ D + → K S 0 π + π − e + ν e is reported. In the hypothesis that all events correspond toK 1 (1270) decays, the branching fractions are measured to be$$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^0\to {K}_1{(1270)}^{-}\left(\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^0\right){e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.69}_{-0.46}^{+0.53}\pm 0.15\right)\times {10}^{-4} $$ B D 0 → K 1 1270 − → K S 0 π − π 0 e + ν e = 1.69 − 0.46 + 0.53 ± 0.15 × 10 − 4 and$$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {\overline{K}}_1{(1270)}^0\left(\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right){e}^{+}{\nu}^e\right)=\left({1.47}_{-0.40}^{+0.45}\pm 0.14\right)\times {10}^{-4} $$ B D + → K ¯ 1 1270 0 → K S 0 π + π − e + ν e = 1.47 − 0.40 + 0.45 ± 0.14 × 10 − 4 with statistical significance of 5.4σand 5.6σ, respectively. When combined with measurements of theK 1 (1270)→ K + π − πdecays, the absolute branching fractions are determined to be$$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^0\to {K}_1{(1270)}^{-}{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.08}_{-0.13-0.10}^{+0.14+0.08}\pm 0.21\right)\times {10}^{-3} $$ B D 0 → K 1 1270 − e + ν e = 1.08 − 0.13 − 0.10 + 0.14 + 0.08 ± 0.21 × 10 − 3 and$$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {\overline{K}}_1{(1270)}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.70}_{-0.23}^{+0.26}\pm 0.13\pm 0.35\right)\times {10}^{-3} $$ B D + → K ¯ 1 1270 0 e + ν e = 1.70 − 0.23 + 0.26 ± 0.13 ± 0.35 × 10 − 3 . The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and the third uncertainties originate from the assumed branching fractions of theK 1 (1270)→ Kππdecays.

Measurements of Born cross sections for e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2595 ) − + c . c . and e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − + c . c . at s = 4918.0 and 4950.9 MeV

Using e + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, the Born cross sections of e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2595 ) − + c . c . and e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − + c . c . are measured for the first time at center-of-mass energies of s = 4918.0 and 4950.9 MeV. Nonzero cross sections are observed very close to the production threshold. The measured Born cross sections of e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − + c . c . are about 2–3 times greater than those of e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2595 ) − + c . c . , providing the similar behavior as semileptonic decays of Λ b 0 , but different behavior from that in the hadronic decays of Λ b 0 . The Born cross sections are 15.6 ± 3.1 ± 0.9 pb and 29.4 ± 3.7 ± 2.7 pb for e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2595 ) − + c . c . , and are 43.4 ± 4.0 ± 4.1 pb and 76.8 ± 6.5 ± 4.2 pb for e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − + c . c . at s = 4918.0 and 4950.9 MeV, respectively. Based on the polar angle distributions of the Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − and Λ c ( 2625 ) + , the form-factor ratios | G E | 2 + 3 | G M | 2 / | G C | are determined for e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − + c . c . for the first time, which are 5.95 ± 4.07 ± 0.15 and 0.94 ± 0.32 ± 0.02 at s = 4918.0 and 4950.9 MeV, respectively. All of these first uncertainties are statistical and second systematic. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for D 0 meson decays to π + π − e + e − and K + K − e + e − final states

A search for D 0 meson decays to the π + π − e + e − and K + K − e + e − final states is reported using a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 . The decay D 0 → π + π − e + e − is observed for the first time when requiring that the two electrons are consistent with coming from the decay of a ϕ or ρ 0 / ω meson. The corresponding branching fractions are measured relative to the D 0 → K − π − [ e + e − ] ρ 0 / ω decay, where the two electrons are consistent with coming from the decay of a ρ 0 or ω meson. No evidence is found for the D 0 → K + K − e + e − decay and world-best limits are set on its branching fraction. The results are compared to, and found to be consistent with, the branching fractions of the D 0 → π + π − μ + μ − and D 0 → K + K − μ + μ − decays recently measured by LHCb and confirm lepton universality at the current precision. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Cross section measurement of e + e − → η ψ ( 2 S ) and search for e + e − → η X ˜ ( 3872 )

The energy-dependent cross section for e + e − → η ψ ( 2 S ) is measured at 18 center of mass energies from 4.288 to 4.951 GeV using the BESIII detector. Using the same data samples, we also perform the first search for the reaction e + e − → η X ˜ ( 3872 ) , but no evidence is found for the X ˜ ( 3872 ) in the π + π − J / ψ mass distribution. At each of the 18 center of mass energies, upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the cross section for e + e − → η ψ ( 2 S ) and on the product of the e + e − → η X ˜ ( 3872 ) cross section with the branching fraction of X ˜ ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ are reported. D$e^+e^-$ffusion: Capturing the Beam-Beam Physics of $e^+e^-$ Collisions with Diffusion Models

Beam-induced backgrounds at high-luminosity $e^+e^-$ colliders, such as the FCC-ee, are dominated by incoherent pair creation (IPC), and require computationally expensive simulations with dedicated Monte Carlo (MC) event generators. Reliable detector and machine-detector interface studies necessitate event samples that are several orders of magnitude larger than what is practically attainable with existing MC. To alleviate this bottleneck, we present D$e^+e^-$ffusion, a denoising diffusion probabilistic model that operates as a permutation-equivariant, set-valued surrogate for fast IPC simulation. Trained on a small GuineaPig++ sample, D$e^+e^-$ffusion faithfully reproduces the marginal and joint kinematic, angular, and positional distributions of all three IPC production processes. In addition, we assess the fidelity at the detector level by propagating both Geant4 and D$e^+e^-$ffusion events through a Geant4 simulation of the CLD vertex detector and by training a transformer-based two-sample classifier; the classifier achieves an area under the ROC curve of $0.553 \pm 0.016$. The trained model generates events nearly four orders of magnitude faster than Geant4, paving the way for a fast-simulation surrogate for FCC-ee design studies.

62°S Witnesses the Transition of Boundary Layer Marine Aerosol Pattern Over the Southern Ocean (50°S–68°S, 63°E– 150°E) During the Spring and Summer: Results From MARCUS (I)

The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Mobile Facility-2 was installed onboard the research vessel Aurora Australis to measure aerosol properties during the 2017-2018 Measurement of Aerosols, Radiation, and CloUds over the pristine Southern ocean (MARCUS) Experiment, providing unique data on aerosols latitudinal and seasonal variation, including south of 60 degrees S where previous observations are scarce. Data from a Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) counter and Ultra-High-Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer show that both the number concentration (N-CCN) and size distribution of CCN-active aerosols, with diameters (D) between 60 nm < D < 1,000 nm are different over the North Southern Ocean (NSO) (50 degrees S-60 degrees S) and the South Southern Ocean (SSO) (62 degrees S-68 degrees S). The average NSO N-CCN at 0.2% and 0.5% supersaturation were 28% and 49% less than that over the SSO. This increase of CCN over the SSO is caused by the increase of aerosols with 60 nm < D < 200 nm, consistent with calculations of Aerosol Scattering Angstrom Exponents derived from a nephelometer. Aerosol hygroscopicity growth factor measured by the Hygroscopic Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer stayed close to 1.41 for aerosols with 50 nm < D < 250 nm over the SSO, but increased from 1.30 to 1.67 over the NSO, indicating different chemical compositions. Both CCN and Ice Nucleating Particles (INPs) showed a stronger variation with season than with latitude. The variation of heat-labile and presumably proteinacous INPs suggests an increase of ice nucleating-active microbes in summer.

Search for heavy Majorana neutrinos in e ± e ± and e ± μ ± final states via WW scattering in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy Majorana neutrinos in scattering of same-sign W boson pairs in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the LHC is reported. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 , collected with the ATLAS detector during 2015–2018. The search is performed in final states including a same-sign ee or eμ pair and at least two jets with large invariant mass and a large rapidity difference. No significant excess of events with respect to the Standard Model background predictions is observed. The results are interpreted in a benchmark scenario of the Phenomenological Type-I Seesaw model. New constraints are set on the values of the |V eN | 2 and |V eN V$^{*}_{μN}$| parameters for heavy Majorana neutrino masses between 50 GeV and 20 TeV, where V ℓN is the matrix element describing the mixing of the heavy Majorana neutrino mass eigenstate with the Standard Model neutrino of flavour ℓ = e,μ. The sensitivity to the Weinberg operator is investigated and constraints on the effective ee and eμ Majorana neutrino masses are reported. The statistical combination of the ee and eμ channels with the previously published μμ channel is performed.

Measurements of the branching fractions of semileptonic D s + decays via e + e − → D s * + D s * −

We measure the absolute branching fractions of semileptonic D s + decays via the e + e − → D s * + D s * − process using e + e − collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.64 fb − 1 collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.237 and 4.699 GeV. The branching fractions are B ( D s + → η e + ν e ) = ( 2.35 ± 0.11 stat ± 0.10 syst ) % , B ( D s + → η ′ e + ν e ) = ( 0.82 ± 0.09 stat ± 0.04 syst ) % , B ( D s + → ϕ e + ν e ) = ( 2.21 ± 0.16 stat ± 0.11 syst ) % , B ( D s + → f 0 ( 980 ) e + ν e , f 0 ( 980 ) → π + π − ) = ( 0.15 ± 0.02 stat ± 0.01 syst ) % , B ( D s + → K 0 e + ν e ) = ( 0.24 ± 0.0 4 stat ± 0.0 1 syst ) % , and B ( D s + → K * 0 e + ν e ) = ( 0.19 ± 0.0 3 stat ± 0.0 1 syst ) % . These results are consistent with those measured via the e + e − → D s * ± D s ∓ process by BESIII and CLEO. Using two-parameter series expansion, the hadronic transition form factors of D s + → η e + ν e , D s + → η ′ e + ν e , and D s + → K 0 e + ν e are determined to be f + η ( 0 ) = 0.442 ± 0.02 2 stat ± 0.01 7 syst , f + η ′ ( 0 ) = 0.557 ± 0.06 2 stat ± 0.02 4 syst , and f + K 0 ( 0 ) = 0.677 ± 0.09 8 stat ± 0.02 3 syst . Study of e + e − → ω X ( 3872 ) and γ X ( 3872 ) from 4.66 to 4.95 GeV

Using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb − 1 collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.66 GeV to 4.95 GeV, we study the processes of e + e − → ω X ( 3872 ) and e + e − → γ X ( 3872 ) . With the e + e − → ω X ( 3872 ) process, the branching fraction ratio R ≡ B ( X ( 3872 ) → γ J / ψ ) B ( X ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ ) is measured to be 0.38 ± 0.2 0 stat ± 0.0 1 syst ( R < 0.83 at 90% confidence level). In addition, we measure the ratio of the average cross section of e + e − → ω X ( 3872 ) to e + e − → ω χ c 1 ( ω χ c 2 ) to be σ ω X ( 3872 ) / σ ω χ c 1 ( σ ω X ( 3872 ) / σ ω χ c 2 ) = 5.2 ± 1.0 stat ± 1.9 syst ( 5.5 ± 1.1 stat ± 2.4 syst ) . Finally, we search for the process of e + e − → γ X ( 3872 ) , and no obvious signal is observed. The upper limit on the ratio of the average cross section of e + e − → γ X ( 3872 ) to e + e − → ω X ( 3872 ) is set as σ γ X ( 3872 ) / σ ω X ( 3872 ) < 0.23 at 90% confidence level. E-scooter safety: How attitudinal factors influence risky behavior among shared e-scooter riders

In recent years, e-scooter usage for short-distance trips has grown rapidly. This surge in e-scooter use, combined with the high exposure of e-scooter riders to accident risk, has sparked concerns regarding e-scooter safety. Despite some studies focusing on e-scooter safety, little is known about how attitudinal factors lead e-scooter riders to engage in risky riding behaviors. In this paper, we developed a survey-based empirical model to identify the attitudinal factors influencing engagement in risky behaviors among e-scooter users. We used survey data collected from 420 shared e-scooter users in Chicago in 2022. The survey showed that 47.7% of respondents had experienced at least one collision or fall-off while riding e-scooters. We employed the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) to examine the relationships between latent attitudinal factors and risky behavior engagement. Moreover, we conducted Permutation Multi-group Analysis (PMGA) to assess the moderating effect of socio-demographic factors within the estimated model. The findings suggest that riders’ unsafe riding attitude and riding confidence are the most influential factors shaping their risky behavior engagement. In addition, accident experience, infrastructure suitability, perceived enjoyment, traffic risk perception, and operational risk perception are among the other significant predictors. Among socio-demographic factors, gender, age, education, and car use frequency significantly influence riders’ engagement in risky behaviors. The results highlight the importance of infrastructure suitability and accident experience in analyzing e-scooter users’ riding behavior. The developed model advances our understanding of factors contributing to e-scooter riders’ risky behavior engagement. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and e-scooter vendors aiming to mitigate e-scooter users’ accident risk. Specifically, we recommend three safety countermeasures: (1) safety training programs to encourage a safer attitude, (2) practice-based initiatives to enhance riding confidence, and (3) infrastructure improvements, especially the expansion of bike lanes.

Study of e + e − → π + π − π 0 at s from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV at BESIII

With the data samples taken at center-of-mass energies from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, a partial wave analysis on the e + e − → π + π − π 0 process is performed. The Born cross sections for e + e − → π + π − π 0 and its intermediate processes e + e − → ρ π and ρ ( 1450 ) π are measured as functions of s . The results for e + e − → π + π − π 0 are consistent with previous results measured with the initial state radiation method within one standard deviation, and improve the uncertainty by a factor of ten. By fitting the line shapes of the Born cross sections for the e + e − → ρ π and e + e − → ρ ( 1450 ) π , a structure with mass M = 2119 ± 11 ± 15 MeV / c 2 and width Γ = 69 ± 30 ± 5 MeV is observed with a significance of 5.9 σ , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. Charge- 4 e and Charge- 6 e Flux Quantization and Higher Charge Superconductivity in Kagome Superconductor Ring Devices

The flux quantization is a key indication of electron pairing in superconductors. For example, the well-known h / 2 e flux quantization is considered strong evidence for the existence of charge- 2 e , two-electron Cooper pairs. Here we report evidence for multicharge flux quantization in mesoscopic ring devices fabricated using the transition-metal kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 . We perform systematic magnetotransport measurements and observe unprecedented quantization of magnetic flux in units of h / 4 e and h / 6 e in magnetoresistance oscillations. Specifically, at low temperatures, magnetoresistance oscillations with period h / 2 e are detected, as expected from the flux quantization for charge- 2 e superconductivity. We find that the h / 2 e oscillations are suppressed and replaced by resistance oscillations with h / 4 e periodicity when the temperature is increased. Increasing the temperature further suppresses the h / 4 e oscillations, and robust resistance oscillations with h / 6 e periodicity emerge as evidence for charge- 6 e flux quantization. Our observations provide the first experimental evidence for the existence of multicharge flux quanta and emergent quantum matter exhibiting higher-charge superconductivity in the strongly fluctuating region above the charge- 2 e Cooper pair condensate, revealing new insights into the intertwined and vestigial electronic order in kagome superconductors. Speed of Sound Measurements of R-1130(E) and an Azeotropic Blend of R-1336mzz(Z)/1130(E)

Sound speed data measured using a dual-path pulse-echo instrument are reported for pure trans-1,2-dichloroethene (R-1130(E)) and an azeotropic blend of cis-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobutene (R-1336mzz(Z)) and R-1130(E) with a composition of 74.8 mass % R-1336mzz(Z) with the balance being R-1130(E). The azeotropic blend of R-1336mzz(Z)/1130(E) is classified as R-514A in ANSI/ASHRAE standard 34. Liquid phase speed of sound data are reported from just above the saturation pressure of pure R-1130(E) or the bubble point pressure of R-514A to a maximum pressure of 26.7 MPa. The relative combined expanded uncertainty in the speed of sound varies from 0.032 % to 0.148 % with the greatest deviations occurring at the lowest sound speeds. At present, no reference Helmholtz-energy-explicit equation of state (EOS) is available for R-1130(E). Therefore, the reported data for pure R-1130(E) are compared to an extended corresponding states (ECS) model. Deviations between the pure R-1130(E) sound speed data and the ECS model were found to be consistently negative ranging between − 4.1 % and − 3.5 %. The R-514A data are compared to a multifluid model inclusive of the established reference Helmholtz-energy-explicit EOS for R-1336mzz(Z) and ECS model for R-1130(E) with estimated binary interaction parameters. Deviations between the experimental speed of sound data and the multifluid model were also found to be consistently negative. However, deviations from the multifluid model were found to be as great as − 17.1 %. The large deviations from the ECS model and multifluid model underscore the need for a robust Helmholtz-energy-explicit EOS for R-1130(E).
