Design and Gas Separation Performance of Imidazolium Poly(ILs) Containing Multivalent Imidazolium Fillers and Crosslinking Agents

This work introduces a series of vinyl-imidazolium-based polyelectrolyte composites, which were structurally modified via impregnation with multivalent imidazolium-benzene ionic liquids (ILs) or crosslinked with novel cationic crosslinkers which possess internal imidazolium cations and vinylimidazolium cations at the periphery. A set of eight [C4vim][Tf2N]-based membranes were prepared via UV-initiated free radical polymerization, including four composites containing di-, tri-, tetra-, and hexa-imidazolium benzene ILs and four crosslinked derivatives which utilized tri- and tetra- vinylimidazolium benzene crosslinking agents. Structural and functional characterizations were performed, and pure gas permeation data were collected to better understand the effects of “free” ILs dispersed in the polymeric matrix versus integrated ionic crosslinks on the transport behaviors of these thin films. These imidazolium PIL:IL composites exhibited moderately high CO2 permeabilities (~20–40 Barrer), a 4–7× increase relative to corresponding neat PIL, with excellent selectivities against N2 or CH4. The addition of imidazolium-benzene fillers with increased imidazolium content were shown to correspondingly enhance CO2 solubility (di- < tri- < tetra- < hexa-), with the [C4vim][Tf2N]: [Hexa(Im+)Benz ][Tf2N] composite showing the highest CO2 permeability (PCO2 = 38.4 Barrer), while maintaining modest selectivities (αCO2/CH4 = 20.2, αCO2/N2 = 23.6). Additionally, these metrics were similarly improved with the integration of more ionic content bonded to the polymeric matrix; increased PCO2 with increased wt% of the tri- and tetra-vinylimidazolium benzene crosslinking agent was observed. This study demonstrates the intriguing interactions and effects of ionic additives or crosslinkers within a PIL matrix, revealing the potential for the tuning of the properties and transport behaviors of ionic polymers using ionic liquid-inspired small molecules.

Designing Imidazolium Poly(amide-amide) and Poly(amide-imide) Ionenes and Their Interactions with Mono- and Tris(imidazolium) Ionic Liquids

Here we introduce the synthesis and thermal properties of a series of sophisticated imidazolium ionenes with alternating amide-amide or amide-imide backbone functionality, and investigate the structural effects of mono(imidazolium) and unprecedented tris(imidazolium) ionic liquids (ILs) in these ionenes. The new set of poly(amide-amide) (PAA) and poly(amide-imide) (PAI) ionenes represent the intersection of conventional high-performance polymers with the ionene archetype–presenting polymers with alternating functional and ionic elements precisely sequenced along the backbone. The effects of polymer composition on the thermal properties and morphology were analyzed. Five distinct polymer backbones were synthesized and combined with a stoichiometric equivalent of the IL 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium bistriflimide ([Bnmim][Tf 2 N]), which were studied to probe the self-assembly, structuring, and contributions of intermolecular forces when IL is added. Furthermore, three polyamide (PA) or polyimide (PI) ionenes with simpler xylyl linkages were interfaced with [Bnmim][Tf 2 N] as well as a novel amide-linked tris(imidazolium) IL, to demonstrate the structural changes imparted by the inclusion of functional, ionic additives dispersed within the ionene matrix. This work highlights the possibilities for utilizing concepts from small molecules which exhibit supramolecular self-assembly to guide creative design and manipulate the structuring of ionenes.

Effects of Methylating Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids on Viscosity: New Insights from the Compensated Arrhenius Formalism

Methylation of the C(2) carbon on imidazolium-based room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) causes an unexpected increase in viscosity when paired with the anion bis(trifluoromethylsulfonamide) [Tf 2 N] – , but the viscosity decreases when the methylated imidazolium is paired with a tetracyanoborate [B(CN) 4 ] – anion. Herein, this paper investigates these different observations in viscosity using the compensated Arrheniusformalism (CAF) for fluidity (inverse viscosity), which assumes fluidity to be a thermally activated process. CAF activation energies are determined for imidazolium [Tf 2 N] – and methylated imidazolium [Tf 2 N] – and compared to imidazolium [B(CN) 4 ] – and methylated imidazolium [B(CN) 4 ] – . The results show that the activation energy increases with methylation for [Tf 2 N] – , but it decreases with methylation for [B(CN) 4 ] – . The CAF results also yield information concerning the entropy of activation, which are compared for the two systems

Imidazolium-Based Polymeric Materials as Alkaline Anion-Exchange Fuel Cell Membranes

Polymer electrolyte membranes that conduct hydroxide ions have potential use in fuel cells. A variety of polystyrene-based quaternary ammonium hydroxides have been reported as anion exchange fuel cell membranes. However, the hydrolytic stability and conductivity of the commercially available membranes are not adequate to meet the requirements of fuel cell applications. When compared with commercially available membranes, polystyrene-imidazolium alkaline membrane electrolytes are more stable and more highly conducting. At the time of this reporting, this has been the first such usage for imidazolium-based polymeric materials for fuel cells. Imidazolium salts are known to be electrochemically stable over wide potential ranges. By controlling the relative ratio of imidazolium groups in polystyrene-imidazolium salts, their physiochemical properties could be modulated. Alkaline anion exchange membranes based on polystyrene-imidazolium hydroxide materials have been developed. The first step was to synthesize the poly(styrene-co-(1-((4-vinyl)methyl)-3- methylimidazolium) chloride through a free-radical polymerization. Casting of this material followed by in situ treatment of the membranes with sodium hydroxide solutions provided the corresponding hydroxide salts. Various ratios of the monomers 4-chloromoethylvinylbenzine (CMVB) and vinylbenzine (VB) provided various compositions of the polymer. The preferred material, due to the relative ease of casting the film, and its relatively low hygroscopic nature, was a 2:1 ratio of CMVB to VB. Testing confirmed that at room temperature, the new membranes outperformed commercially available membranes by a large margin. With fuel cells now in use at NASA and in transportation, and with defense potential, any improvement to fuel cell efficiency is a significant development.

How Do Ionic Liquids “Fold” Ionenes? Computational and Experimental Analysis of Imidazolium Polymers Based on Ether and Alkyl Chain Variations Dissolved in an Ionic Liquid

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and complementary experiments are used here to understand the inter- and intramolecular structure and conformational properties of ionenes (i.e., cationic polymers formed from condensation reactions) dissolved in an ionic liquid (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bistriflimide [C 2 mim + ][Tf 2 N - ]. The simulated structural properties are benchmarked against experimental analyses of these same polymers, mainly using dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. Four different imidazolium ionenes are considered, corresponding to variations in the chemistry and structure of the repeat units including: (1) poly (decylimidazolium) (PD 10 ); (2) poly (tetraethyleneglycolimidazolium) (PE 10 ); (3) alternating copolymer (P(ED) 5 ); and (4) a block copolymer (PE 5 D 5 ). Detailed computational analyses of the polymer structure and conformational properties were performed, including the radius of gyration, end-to-end distance, torsional distributions, and site-site and spatial distribution functions. Overall, there is a competition between intramolecular associations between the imidazolium groups and the ether sites in the polymers versus the intermolecular interactions of the polymer imidazolium groups with the surrounding anion molecules. The polymer with only ether linkages (PE 10 ) results in the most intramolecular interactions, leading to significant coiling behavior and chain contraction. These strong interactions reduce chain flexibility, but they also result in much more linear chain configurations and alignment of the imidazolium groups. The polymer structure is strongly affected as the concentration of alkyl groups is increased, and we find that the polymer architecture (alternating versus block copolymer) also has an important influence. Furthermore, these detailed observations are important for understanding the connection between the molecular design of imidazolium polymers and their emergent structural properties, which could lead to unique opportunities for creating polymer composites.

Chemical Modifications of Ag Catalyst Surfaces with Imidazolium Ionomers Modulate H 2 Evolution Rates during Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction

Bridging polymer design with catalyst surface science is a promising direction for tuning and optimizing electrochemical reactors that could impact long-term goals in energy and sustainability. Particularly, the interaction between inorganic catalyst surfaces and organic-based ionomers provides an avenue to both steer reaction selectivity and promote activity. In this work, we studied the role of imidazolium-based ionomers for electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction to CO (CO 2 R) on Ag surfaces and found that they produce no effect on CO 2 R activity yet strongly promote the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). By examining the dependence of HER and CO 2 R rates on concentrations of CO 2 and HCO 3 –, we developed a kinetic model that attributes HER promotion to intrinsic promotion of HCO 3 – reduction by imidazolium ionomers. We also show that varying the ionomer structure by changing substituents on the imidazolium ring modulates the HER promotion. This ionomer-structure dependence was analyzed via Taft steric parameters and density functional theory calculations, which suggest that steric bulk from functionalities on the imidazolium ring reduces access of the ionomer to both HCO 3 – and the Ag surface, thus limiting the promotional effect. Our results help develop design rules for ionomer–catalyst interactions in CO 2 R and motivate further work into precisely uncovering the interplay between primary and secondary coordination in determining electrocatalytic behavior.

Alkali Cation Inhibition of Imidazolium-Mediated Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction on Silver

Imidazolium-based ionic liquids have led to enhanced CO 2 electroreduction activity due to cation effects at the cathode surface, stabilizing the reaction intermediates and decreasing the activation energy. In aqueous media, alkali cations are also known to improve CO 2 reduction activity on metals such as Ag, with the enhancement attributed to electrical double layer effects and trending with the size of the alkali cation. However, the effect of a mixed catholyte solution of alkali cations in the presence of an imidazolium-based ionic liquid has not been well-explored. Herein, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [EMIM][BF 4 ], in water was investigated with alkali salts to unravel the interaction effects for CO 2 electroreduction on Ag. Although both [EMIM] + and alkali cations have individually improved CO 2 to CO conversion on Ag in water, electrochemical results showed that alkali cations hindered imidazolium-mediated CO 2 electroreduction in most conditions. Li + , in particular, was sharply inhibitory compared to other alkali cations and strongly redirected the selectivity to hydrogen evolution. The nature of the alkali cation inhibition was investigated with spectroscopic techniques, including in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (DEIS). Along with computational insights from density functional theory (DFT), the electrochemical and spectroscopic data suggest that alkali cations inhibit [EMIM]-mediated CO 2 reduction by competing for surface adsorption sites, preventing the potential-dependent structural reorientation of imidazolium, and promoting hydrogen evolution by bringing solvated water to the cathode surface.

Imidazolium-Type Anion Exchange Membranes for Improved Organic Acid Transport and Permselectivity in Electrodialysis

Most commercial anion exchange membranes (AEMs) deploy quaternary ammonium moieties. Alternative cation moieties have been explored in AEMs for fuel cells, but there are no studies focused examining alternative tethered cations in AEMs for ionic separations—such as organic acid anion transport via electrodialysis. H-cell and conductivity experiments demonstrate that tethered benzyl 1-methyl imidazolium groups in polysulfone AEMs enhance lactate conductivity by 49% and improved lactate anion flux by 24x when compared to a quaternary benzyl ammonium polysulfone AEM. An electrodialysis demonstration with the imidazolium-type AEM showed a 2x improvement in lactate anion flux and 20% improvement in permselectivity when benchmarked against the quaternary ammonium AEM. Molecular dynamics and 2D NOESY NMR revealed closer binding of lactate anions to the imidazolium cations when compared to the quaternary ammonium cation. It is posited that this closer binding is responsible to greater flux values observed with imidazolium-type AEM.

Structure and Dynamics of Imidazolium in an Ionic Liquid-PEGDA Iongel via IR, 2D-IR, and NMR Spectroscopy

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectroscopy, ultrafast two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that, in iongels composed of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl\-sulfonyl)imide ([C 2 C 1 Im][Tf 2 N]}) and cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate (cl-PEGDA), imidazolium cations solvate PEGDA chains in tight and loose complexes. H/D isotope substitution at the 2-position of the imidazolium ring simplifies the CH-stretching vibrational bands. Tight complexes are characterized by stronger, directional hydrogen bonding interactions between the 2-position of the imidazolium ring and the ethereal oxygens. The loose complexes resemble bulk ionic liquid (IL) non-specifically perturbed by the PEGDA chains.

Measuring Solvation Interactions of Deep Eutectic Solvents Formed by Metal Chlorides and an Imidazolium Salt by Inverse Gas Chromatography

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) represent a class of solvents that offer a number of advantages including minimal toxicity, affordability, low vapor pressure, and simple, environmentally friendly preparation methods. They have found utility in areas, such as gas absorption, metal plating, and extractions. However, the relationship between their solvation properties and chemical composition remains poorly understood. In this study, a broad range of Type I DESs composed of metal chlorides and an imidazolium salt were prepared, employed as gas chromatographic stationary phases, and characterized using the Abraham solvation parameter model by inverse gas chromatography. The Abraham solvation parameter model allows for the study of DES solvation properties and the effects of varying structural components on system constants using a linear-free energy relationship. The DESs were investigated by systematically varying their composition, including the type of metal chloride and the molar ratio between the metal chloride and the imidazolium salt. The results show that hydrogen bond acidity, hydrogen bond basicity, and dipolarity/polarizability interactions are strongly influenced by the type of metal chloride within the DES and the ratio of metal chloride to imidazolium salt in the eutectic mixture. Furthermore, a column pretreatment procedure is presented that enables the effective coating of highly polar DESs onto open tubular capillary gas chromatography columns.

Toward controlled functional sequencing and hierarchical structuring in imidazolium ionenes

This focused mini-review highlights recent advances related to the design and applications of imidazolium ionenes and forward-looking perspectives. Creative strategies which employ established synthetic approaches and utilize the modularity of the imidazole moiety unlock great potential for tailoring both functional and structural features arising from precise spacing of ionic groups within the polymer backbone. Here, as imidazolium ionenes draw more interest, increased sophistication of chemical modifications and material processing is occurring, with a corresponding shift toward more demanding applications. Synthetic routes for placement and sequencing of ionic content are discussed, in addition to recent approaches to control structure and self-assembly or tune behaviors of imidazolium ionenes and composites.

Multifunctional Charge and Hydrogen-Bond Effects of Second-Sphere Imidazolium Pendants Promote Capture and Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 in Water Catalyzed by Iron Porphyrins

Microenvironments tailored by multifunctional secondary coordination sphere groups can enhance catalytic performance at primary metal active sites in natural systems. In this work, we capture this biological concept in synthetic systems by developing a family of iron porphyrins decorated with imidazolium (im) pendants for the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), which promotes multiple synergistic effects to enhance CO 2 RR and enables the disentangling of second-sphere contributions that stem from each type of interaction. Fe-ortho-im(H), which poises imidazolium units featuring both positive charge and hydrogen-bond capabilities proximal to the active iron center, increases CO 2 binding affinity by 25-fold and CO 2 RR activity by 2000-fold relative to the parent Fe tetraphenylporphyrin (Fe-TPP). Comparison with monofunctional analogs reveals that through-space charge effects have a greater impact on catalytic CO 2 RR performance compared to hydrogen bonding in this context.

Efficient electrocatalytic conversion of CO 2 to ethanol enabled by imidazolium-functionalized ionomer confined molybdenum phosphide

An effective electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR) requires the discovery of a catalytic system that is highly active and selective for multi-carbon products together with superior CO 2 diffusion at a catalyst layer to minimize the reduction barriers. Here, we found a catalytic system that uses molybdenum phosphide (MoP) nanoparticles covered by imidazolium-functionalized ionomer (Im) that promotes CO 2 diffusion at the catalyst layer toward the catalyst surface, where CO 2 is reduced to ethanol (C 2 H 5 OH). The electrochemical results with the MoP-Im co-catalyst show a C 2 H 5 OH production Faradaic efficiency and a cathodic energy efficiency of 77.4% and 63.3%, respectively, at a potential as low as - 200 mV vs. RHE. The electrochemical experiments along with our physicochemical characterizations indicate that the Im improves CO 2 diffusion and balances water content resulting in a higher CO 2 -to-water ratio at the catalyst layer and fine-tunes the electronic properties of Mo atoms at the MoP surface. Finally, in-situ Raman spectroscopy reveals that a high number of adsorbed *CO intermediates on the surface and a higher binding strength of *CO intermediates on the Mo surface sites in the presence of imidazolium molecules are the main reasons for a superior C-C coupling and thereby the improved C 2 H 5 OH formation.
