European Workshop Industrical Computer Science Systems approach to design for safety

This paper presents guidelines on designing systems for safety, developed by the Technical Committee 7 on Reliability and Safety of the European Workshop on Industrial Computer Systems. The focus is on complementing the traditional development process by adding the following four steps: (1) overall safety analysis; (2) analysis of the functional specifications; (3) designing for safety; (4) validation of design. Quantitative assessment of safety is possible by means of a modular questionnaire covering various aspects of the major stages of system development.

Space industrialization. Volume 1: An overview

Benefits accruing to the United States from the investment of public and private resources in space industralization are projected. The future was examined to characterize resource pressures, requirements and supply (population, energy, materials, food). The backdrop of probable events, attitudes, and trends against which space industralization will evolve were postulated. The opportunities for space industry that would benefit earth were compiled and screened against terrestrial alternatives. A cursory market survey was conducted for the selected services and products provided by these initiatives.

Space industrialization. Volume 3: World and domestic implications

The status of worldwide space industralization activities is assessed as well as the benefits to be anticipated from enhanced activities. Methods for stimulating space industralization growth are discussed with emphasis on foreign and international activities, national and world impact assessments, industry/government interfaces, legal implications, institutional implications, economics and capitalization, and implementation issues and recommendations.

The next 25 years: Industrialization of space - Rationale for planning

A methodology for planning the industralization of space is discussed. The suggested approach combines the extrapolative ('push') approach, in which alternative futures are projected on the basis of past and current trends and tendencies, with the normative ('pull') view, in which an ideal state in the far future is postulated and policies and decisions are directed toward its attainment. Time-reversed vectors of the future are tied to extrapolated, trend-oriented vectors of the quasi-present to identify common plateaus or stepping stones in technological development. Important steps in the industrialization of space to attain the short-range goals of production of space-derived energy, goods and services and the long-range goal of space colonization are discussed.

The next 25 years: Industrialization of space: Rationale for planning

The goals of NASA's space industralization program include contributing to increased productivity on earth without taxing the environment, generating new values through extraterrestrial productivity, and providing new growth options for the future which include the permanent settlement of space and long-range colonization and exploration projects. In planning the long-range space program based on essentially utilitarian aspects, without losing sight of the more humanistically significant long term, and to forecast associated technology requirements, a realistic approach is obtained by combining extrapolative and normative planning modes so that common stepping stones can be identified. In the extrapolative view, alternative futures are projected on the basis of past and current trends and tendencies. In the normative view, some ideal state in the far future is envisioned or postulated, and policies and decisions are directed toward its attainment.

Space industrialization. Volume 4: Appendices

Program development and analysis and recommendations for NASA activities are discussed. The impact of international space law on future use of outer space is examined in the light of applicable international agreements. Recommendations for actions designed to facilitate space industralization are also proposed.

A two-dimensional photochemical model of the atmosphere. I Chlorocarbon emissions and their effect on stratospheric ozone

A two-dimensional photochemical model is used to examine changes to the ozone layer caused by emissions of CFCl3, CF2Cl2, CH3CCl3 and CCl4. The influence of a possible secular increase in tropospheric methane up to 2 percent per year was found to be small, although it acts to mask decreases in total ozone caused by the chlorocarbons. Increasing NO(x) emissions caused by industralization also tend to mask decreases in total ozone and may have caused total ozone to increase by about 1 percent. The model-calculated ozone decreases are estimated to be about 3 percent by 1980. This estimate is higher than estimates by similar models, although it is noted that CCl4 and CH3CCl3 emissions are included in the model in addition to CFCl3 and CF2Cl2. This is significant because the model indicates that CCl4 has dominated the ozone depletions so far, and knowledge of the historical emission rate of CCl4 to the atmosphere is incomplete. There remain sufficient significant disagreements between theoretical and observed concentrations and variabilities, particularly for odd nitrogen and ClO, to caution against assigning too much confidence in the calculated ozone depletion.

Role of Space Station: The how of space industrialization

The roles of the Space Station, as an R&D facility, as part of an industrial system which support space industralization, and as a transportation node for space operations are considered. Industrial opportunities relative to these roles are identified and space station concepts responsive to these roles are discussed.

Energy requirements for the space frontier

The cost of delivering payloads to Mars orbital locations from LEO is determined and future launch cost reductions are projected. The performance necessary for future solar and nuclear space power options is predicted, categorizing the needs as survival, self-sufficiency, and industralization. The cost of present space power systems is determined and projections are made for future systems.

Small Engine Technology (SET) - Task 14 Axisymmetric Engine Simulation Environment

As part of the NPSS (Numerical Propulsion Simulation System) project, NASA Lewis has a goal of developing an U.S. industry standard for an axisymmetric engine simulation environment. In this program, AlliedSignal Engines (AE) contributed to this goal by evaluating the ENG20 software and developing support tools. ENG20 is a NASA developed axisymmetric engine simulation tool. The project was divided into six subtasks which are summarized below: Evaluate the capabilities of the ENG20 code using an existing test case to see how this procedure can capture the component interactions for a full engine. Link AE's compressor and turbine axisymmetric streamline curvature codes (UD0300M and TAPS) with ENG20, which will provide the necessary boundary conditions for an ENG20 engine simulation. Evaluate GE's Global Data System (GDS), attempt to use GDS to do the linking of codes described in Subtask 2 above. Use a turbofan engine test case to evaluate various aspects of the system, including the linkage of UD0300M and TAPS with ENG20 and the GE data storage system. Also, compare the solution results with cycle deck results, axisymmetric solutions (UD0300M and TAPS), and test data to determine the accuracy of the solution. Evaluate the order of accuracy and the convergence time for the solution. Provide a monthly status report and a final formal report documenting AE's evaluation of ENG20. Provide the developed interfaces that link UD0300M and TAPS with ENG20, to NASA. The interface that links UD0300M with ENG20 will be compatible with the industr,, version of UD0300M.

Advanced Building Construction (ABC) Research Opportunities Report: Industrializing Construction to Decarbonize Buildings

The DOE Building Technologies Office generally seeks to develop, demonstrate, and accelerate the adoption of cost-effective technologies, techniques, and tools in support of an equitable transition to a decarbonized building stock and energy system by 2050. This ABC Innovations Roadmap specifically focuses on and prioritizes innovations that support the industrialization of whole building retrofits and rapid growth of efficient new construction. The content relates to the integration of technologies and industrialization of processes associated with building construction and renovation. The ABC Innovations Roadmap cross-applies innovations in both the new and existing building sectors with a focus on widescale applicability. Installation flexibility is key to commoditizing solutions that are applicable for a wide variety of buildings (e.g., different building types, vintages, architectural details, and system configurations) and to help simplify decarbonization processes for the workforce.
