An Integrated Platform for Mission Performance: Goddard Space Flight Center's Meta Information System

Successful management of NASA Goddard Space Flight Centers portfolio of mission projects (i.e. spacecraft, spacecraft instruments / subsystems, and ground systems) depends upon numerous processes, data and information resources coming together throughout the life-cycle of the projects to enable sound decision-making, risk reduction, conformance with requirements and continual improvement. In the summer of 2012, GSFC SMA management recognized that the set of legacy data systems used to support the SMA mission and responsibilities at GSFC were not effective, integrated nor on par with best practices. Accordingly, GSFC SMA management launched a project to transform the GSFC electronic management system to create and deploy an integrated, state-of-the-market information system for process performance, data management and analytics that is currently operating in support of GSFC overall mission performance. The information system, known as Meta, provides controlled, process-based applications, integrated data management, and analytics for a robust set of integrated applications. Since the inception of the project, a lean, award-winning SMA project team has thus far designed, configured and managed the system to serve as an integrated platform for 18 applications that support key processes for GSFC and the Science Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters, such as internal Management System assessments, Supplier Assessments, Supplier Research & Analysis, Problem Reporting for in-house mission projects, On-orbit Anomaly Reporting for GSFC-operated spacecraft, GSFC Project Life-Cycle Reviews, Risk Management and Reporting, and SMA Project Team Reporting. The system has experienced steady growth in utilization with 1,917 users (NASA employees and support contractor personnel) and 44 gigabytes of data and related files managed by the system as of the end of April 2018. Overall, Meta has achieved increasing levels of process management and real-time data / information integration to enable improved process performance, richer analytics and informed decision-making. This paper will present and examine the need, goals, approach and design driving the management and operation of the Meta information system and its ongoing growth as an integrated platform for advancing NASA mission performance.

An Integrated Data Analytics Platform

An Integrated Science Data Analytics Platform is an environment that enables the confluence of resources for scientific investigation. It harmonizes data, tools and computational resources which subsequently enable the research community to focus on the investigation rather than spending time on security, data preparation, management, etc. OceanWorks is a NASA technology integration project to establish a cloud-based Integrated Ocean Science Data Analytics Platform at NASA’s Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) for big ocean science. It focuses on advancement and maturity by bringing together several NASA open-source, big data projects for parallel analytics, anomaly detection, in-situ to satellite data matchup, quality-screened data subsetting, search relevancy, and data discovery. Our communities are relying on data distributed through data centers such as the PO.DAAC, COAPS, NCAR, and many others to conduct their research. In typical investigations, scientists would engage in: search for data, evaluate the relevance of that data, download it, and then apply algorithms to identify trends. Such workflow cannot scale if the research involves a massive amount of data or multi-variate measurements. NASA’s Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is expected to produce massive amount of observational data during its 3-year nominal mission. Collections like SWOT challenges all existing Earth Science data archival, distribution and analysis paradigms. In this paper, we will discuss how OceanWorks enhances the analysis of physical ocean data where the computation is done on an elastic cloud platform next to the archive to deliver fast, web-accessible services for working with oceanographic measurements.

The planning coordinator: A design architecture for autonomous error recovery and on-line planning of intelligent tasks

Developing a robust, task level, error recovery and on-line planning architecture is an open research area. There is previously published work on both error recovery and on-line planning; however, none incorporates error recovery and on-line planning into one integrated platform. The integration of these two functionalities requires an architecture that possesses the following characteristics. The architecture must provide for the inclusion of new information without the destruction of existing information. The architecture must provide for the relating of pieces of information, old and new, to one another in a non-trivial rather than trivial manner (e.g., object one is related to object two under the following constraints, versus, yes, they are related; no, they are not related). Finally, the architecture must be not only a stand alone architecture, but also one that can be easily integrated as a supplement to some existing architecture. This thesis proposal addresses architectural development. Its intent is to integrate error recovery and on-line planning onto a single, integrated, multi-processor platform. This intelligent x-autonomous platform, called the Planning Coordinator, will be used initially to supplement existing x-autonomous systems and eventually replace them.

Integrated Silicon Platform for Co-planar Design of Vertically Stacked 2.06 THz Mixer Module

The process for fabricating and utilizing the threedimensional Si stack receiver front-end is described in this paper. The capability to have exact dimensionality becomes essential as frequency scales due to the complexity arising in assembly and finer tolerances. Total process yields can be improved through Si fabrication by verifying achievement of specified tolerances lithographically and compatibility to rapid process changes and design fine-tuning. The integrated Si platform with the mounted device is shown in Figure 1. Signal I/O and alignment modalities enable lownoise measurements. Silicon micromachining provides the necessary accuracy for integration at the several THz regime. Particularly, processing and etch recipes have demonstrated smooth surfaces of < 1 μm surface roughness. In consideration is pre-compensating for minute offsets, matching mechanical strain on all interfaces, and including passive alignment verification in the design. As compared to metal blocks, computer numerical controlled (CNC) milling can produce slight burrs in the interfaces resulting in misalignment and resultant strain between two pieces of components. Furthermore, Si integration can make possible arrays of pixel transceivers through compact subsystems for the purpose of measuring multiple lines of spectral content simultaneously in space.

Process and information integration via hypermedia

Success stories for advanced automation prototypes abound in the literature but the deployments of practical large systems are few in number. There are several factors that militate against the maturation of such prototypes into products. Here, the integration of advanced automation software into large systems is discussed. Advanced automation systems tend to be specific applications that need to be integrated and aggregated into larger systems. Systems integration can be achieved by providing expert user-developers with verified tools to efficiently create small systems that interface to large systems through standard interfaces. The use of hypermedia as such a tool in the context of the ground control centers that support Shuttle and space station operations is explored. Hypermedia can be an integrating platform for data, conventional software, and advanced automation software, enabling data integration through the display of diverse types of information and through the creation of associative links between chunks of information. Further, hypermedia enables process integration through graphical invoking of system functions. Through analysis and examples, researchers illustrate how diverse information and processing paradigms can be integrated into a single software platform.

Inertially referenced instrument pointing platform with momentum compensated articulation

The characteristics of the Mariner Mark II Integrated Platform Pointing and Attitude Control System (IPPACS) microstep actuator with momentum compensation and the IPPACS optical reference tracker are examined, and the advantages of this new technology are identified. The momentum-compensated articulation acts to prevent platform articulation activity from disturbing the spacecaft. This guarantees dynamic stability, ensures a quiescent pointing environment, and decouples the design of the platform from the design of the spacecraft. A microstep actuator with harmonic drive provides platform angular step resolution to 0.5 arcsec for precision pointing of instruments. An optical reference tracker boresighted with scientific instruments guarantees accurate target-referenced closed-loop pointing. An IPPACS star and target tracker with 1 to 10 arcsec accuracy and wide 11 x 17 degrees field of view has been derived from Advanced Star and Target Reference Optical Sensor (ASTROS) CCD star tracker technology, greatly enhancing the optical referencing capabilities of future multimission interplanetary spacecraft.

Towards an Aero-Propulso-Servo-Elasticity Analysis of a Commercial Supersonic Transport

This paper covers the development of an aero-propulso-servo-elastic (APSE) model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and linear structural deformations. The APSE model provides the integration of the following two previously developed nonlinear dynamic simulations: a variable cycle turbofan engine and an elastic supersonic commercial transport vehicle. The primary focus of this study is to provide a means to include relevant dynamics of a turbomachinery propulsion system into the aeroelastic studies conducted during a vehicle design, which have historically neglected propulsion effects. A high fidelity CFD tool is used here for the integration platform. The elastic vehicle neglecting the propulsion system serves as a comparison of traditional approaches to the APSE results. An overview of the methodology is presented for integrating the propulsion system and elastic vehicle. Static aeroelastic analysis comparisons between the traditional and developed APSE models for a wing tip detection indicate that the propulsion system impact on the vehicle elastic response could increase the detection by approximately ten percent.

Multi-Gbps Fiber-Optic Wavefront Sensing Coherent Optical Receiver

We report recent progress on technology developments at the NASA Glenn Research Center using photonic lanterns for coherent optical communications applications. In particular, the development of a spatial mode-diversity optical receiver using a photonic lantern combined with a photonic integrated circuit (PIC). The PIC is designed for compatibility with the NASA Laser Communication Relay Demonstration’s (LCRD) differential phase-shift keying signaling format. We report on the PIC design and future characterization and packaging efforts. Additionally, we report on the development of a 19-channel photonic lantern and provide updates on efforts to use the photonic lantern as a wavefront sensing device. The photonic lantern insertion loss, and spatial-mode transfer characteristics are detailed, as well as the development of a predictive framework in which the intensities in the 19 single-mode output channels are used to reconstruct the wavefront of the light entering the multi-moded input side of the lantern. Finally, we discuss concepts for potential future systems using photonic lanterns and PICs that combine both wavefront sensing and coherent communications onto a single integrated platform.

A Novel 3D DRAM Memory Cube Architecture for Space Applications

The first mainstream products in 3D IC design are memory devices where multiple memory tiers are horizontally integrated to offer manifold improvements compared with their 2D counterparts. Unfortunately, none of these existing 3D memory cubes are ready for harsh space environments. This paper presents a new memory cube architecture for space, based on vertical integration of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS), 3D stacked, DRAM memory devices with a custom Radiation-Hardened-By-Design (RHBD) controller offering high memory capacity, robust reliability and low latency.Validation and evaluation of the ASIC controller will be conducted prior to tape-out on a custom FPGA-based emulator platform integrating the 3D-stack.
