Atomically Thin, Ionic–Covalent Organic Nanosheets for Stable, High–Performance Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction

The incorporation of charged functional groups is effective to modulate the activity of molecular complexes for the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), yet long-term heterogeneous electrolysis is often hampered by catalyst leaching. Herein, an electrocatalyst of atomically thin, cobalt-porphyrin-based, ionic–covalent organic nanosheets (CoTAP-iCONs) is synthesized via a post-synthetic modification strategy for high-performance CO 2 -to-CO conversion. The cationic quaternary ammonium groups not only enable the formation of monolayer nanosheets due to steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion, but also facilitate the formation of a *COOH intermediate, as suggested by theoretical calculations. Consequently, CoTAP-iCONs exhibit higher CO 2 RR activity than other cobalt-porphyrin-based structures: an 870% and 480% improvement of CO current densities compared to the monomer and neutral nanosheets, respectively. Additionally, the iCONs structure can accommodate the cationic moieties. In a flow cell, CoTAP-iCONs attain a very small onset overpotential of 40 mV and a stable total current density of 212 mA cm –2 with CO Faradaic efficiency of >95% at –0.6 V for 11 h. Further coupling the flow electrolyzer with commercial solar cells yields a solar-to-CO conversion efficiency of 13.89%. Finally, this work indicates that atom-thin, ionic nanosheets represent a promising structure for achieving both tailored activity and high stability.

A Quinoidal Two‐Dimensional Metal–Organic Framework for High‐Performance Micro‐Supercapacitors and Solid‐State Lithium Batteries

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) integrating redox-active linkers enable dense charge sites and open ion pathways for microscale energy storage. We report a quinoidal dicarboxylate ligand, AQM-H2L, derived from p-azaquinodimethane, forming crystalline frameworks with Cu2+ and Zn2+ nodes. The Cu-based MOF (AQM-AQM-H2L-Cu) exhibits layered sheets (>14 Å spacing) constructed from dinuclear Cu-carboxylate units and conjugated AQM linkers, which narrow the bandgap and introduce Cu2+/Cu+ pseudocapacitance. Exfoliated nanosheets (∼5 nm) retain crystallinity and excellent processability. Integrated into graphene films, they deliver areal and volumetric capacitances of 29.6 mF cm-2 and 18.1 F cm-3, achieving 2.6 mWh cm-3 energy density at 160 mW cm-3. As ionic fillers (1 wt%) in PEO solid polymer electrolytes, the nanosheets markedly enhance LiFePO4 cell performance, affording 169.8 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and 93% retention after 400 cycles. This work establishes quinoidal linkers as a compact and robust design motif for ionically active 2D frameworks toward high-performance miniature and solid-state energy devices.

Revolutionizing Porous Liquids: Stabilization and Structural Engineering Achieved by a Surface Deposition Strategy

Facile approaches capable of constructing stable and structurally diverse porous liquids (PLs) that can deliver high-performance applications are a long-standing, captivating, and challenging research area that requires significant attention. Here, in this work, a facile surface deposition strategy is demonstrated to afford diverse type III-PLs possessing ultra-stable dispersion, external structure modification, and enhanced performance in gas storage and transformation by leveraging the expeditious and uniform precipitation of selected metal salts. The Ag(I) species-modified zeolite nanosheets are deployed as the porous host to construct type III-PLs with ionic liquids (ILs) containing bromide anion , leading to stable dispersion driven by the formation of AgBr nanoparticles. The as-afforded type-III PLs display promising performance in CO 2 capture/conversion and ethylene/ethane separation. Property and performance of the as-produced PLs can be tuned by the cation structure of the ILs, which can be harnessed to achieve polarity reversal of the porous host via ionic exchange. The surface deposition procedure can be further extended to produce PLs from Ba(II)-functionalized zeolite and ILs containing [SO 4 ] 2– anion driven by the formation of BaSO 4 salts. The as-produced PLs are featured by well-maintained crystallinity of the porous host, good fluidity and stability, enhanced gas uptake capacity, and attractive performance in small gas molecule utilization.

Ion Transport in Self-Assembled Peptoid Membranes with Carbon Nanotube Porin Channels

Artificial membranes that combine high ionic selectivity with mechanical robustness remain a key challenge for next-generation separation technologies. Here, we report ion transport measurements in biomimetic membranes composed of crystalline peptoid nanosheets co-assembled with carbon nanotube porins (CNTPs). Pure peptoid sheets formed defect-free, ion-impermeable membranes, which were then suspended over small SiN x nanopore apertures for ion transport measurements. Incorporation of CNTPs into the peptoid sheet matrix made these membranes ion permeable, with ion conductance values consistent with ion transport through individual and multiple carbon nanotube channels. In conclusion, the modularity and molecular order of peptoid membranes, combined with the exceptional conductance properties of CNTPs, position this platform as a versatile framework for assembling programmable, selective, and robust nanofluidic membranes that can bridge the performance gap between biological and synthetic membrane materials.

A Study on the Synthesis and Proton Transport Behavior of Multilayered ZSM-5 Zeolite Nanosheet Membranes Laminated on Polymer Substrates

Single crystalline ZSM-5 ZNs with thicknesses around 6 nm were obtained by secondary growth of silicalite nanoparticles using diquaternary bis-1,5(tripropyl ammonium) pentamethylene diiodide (dC5) as a structure-directing agent (SDA). The dC5 could be effectively removed from the ZN pores by either high-temperature calcination or UV irradiation in air at room temperature but not by the piranha solution treatment. Ultrathin ZN-laminated membranes (ZNLMs) were fabricated by sandwiching a UV-activated multilayered ZN film between two recast Nafion® layers (ZNLM-Nafion) and by filtration coating from a suspension of thermally activated ZNs on a nonionic porous PVDF (ZNLM-PVDF). The ZNLMs on both supports demonstrated the ability of highly proton-selective ion conduction with low resistances in aqueous electrolyte solutions. The ZNLM-PVDF with PVDF binder was structurally stable, and it achieved a comparably low ASR but much higher proton selectivity compared with a Nafion membrane of same overall thickness. However, detachment between the ZNLM and Nafion layers occurred when the ZNLM-Nafion operated in aqueous electrolyte solutions. Results of this study show the potential for developing ZNLMs as efficient proton-conducting membranes without using expensive ionic polymer matrices. However, the development of polymer-supported ZNLMs is hindered by the current inefficiency in preparing well-dispersed suspensions of open-pore ZNs. Future development of efficient methods for synthesizing open-pore ZNs in dispersed states is key to realizing high-performance ZNLMs on polymers.

A Cross‐Linked Flexible Metaferroelectrolyte Regulated by 2D/2D Perovskite Heterostructures for High‐Performance Compact Solid‐State Sodium Batteries

Abstract To address the issues of limited ionic conductivity and poor interface stability at room and low temperatures in solid‐state electrolytes, a robust intrinsic ferroelectrolyte or nanoferroelectrolyte strategy for engineering solid‐state flexible ferroelectric composite electrolytes utilizing strongly coupled intrinsic ion conducting 2D/2D sodium‐rich anti‐perovskite (NaRAP)/ferroelectric perovskite heterostructures is introduced. Herein, highly scalable PVDF‐based metaferroelectrolytes with Na 2.99 Ba 0.005 OCl/Ca 2 Na 2 Nb 5 O 16 − (CNNO − ) nanosheets into a ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF‐HFP) matrix, through an in situ cross‐linking and spontaneous bridging method, for compact solid‐state sodium batteries (SSBs), are reported. Benefiting from unique well‐dispersed 3D ferroelectric coupled network and the Na 2.99 Ba 0.005 OCl/CNNO − ‐induced PVDF‐HFP ferroelectric β phase, the Na + flux is regulated, thereby inhibiting Na dendrite growth at the interface. Notably, the optimized PH‐5% NC metaferroelectrolyte exhibits rapid ion transport (1.11 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 25 °C), a wide electrochemical window (> 4.8V), superior conformal mechanical compatibility, improved flexibility, good elasticity and flame retardancy. The solid‐state Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /PH‐5% NC/Na batteries present a stable cycling performance (remaining 56.4 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C) even at 0 °C, potential for cost‐effective, safe, stable and compact SSB energy storage over 600 Wh L −1 , vastly surpassing 365 Wh L −1 of the current commercial sodium‐ion liquid‐electrolyte batteries.

Application of GO anchored mediator in a polymer electrolyte membrane for high-rate solid-state supercapacitors

Here, we synthesized a novel polymer electrolyte membrane by combining poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and a lithium salt of tungstosilicic acid (Li 4 SiW 12 O 40 , hereafter, referred to SiWLi). The impact of the addition of GO/SiWLi on the microstructure and morphology of the membrane were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). We found that adding the GO/SiWLi to the PVDF/LiTFSI polymer electrolyte membrane significantly reduced the pore size. Furthermore, the addition of the GO/SiWLi resulted in not only an increase of the ionic conductivity from 0.87 $\times$ 10 –2 to 3.12 $\times$ 10 –2 Scm –1 but also an increase in the lithium-ion transference number from 0.52 to 0.87. The polymer electrolyte membranes with and without GO/SiWLi were utilized to fabricate solid-state supercapacitors. The supercapacitors fabricated with the membrane containing GO/SiWLi displayed 37.2% lower equivalent series resistance and 88.2% greater specific capacitance than those fabricated using the membrane without GO/SiWLi at 200mVs –1 .

Encapsulation of hygroscopic liquids via polymer precipitation in non-aqueous emulsions

Here, encapsulation of ionic liquids (ILs) and phase change materials (PCMs) can overcome limitations associated with bulk materials, e.g., slow mass transfer rates, high viscosities, or susceptibility to external environment. Single step soft-templated encapsulation methods commonly use interfacial polymerization for shell formation, with a multifunctional monomer in the continuous phase and another in the discontinuous phase, and thus do not give pristine core material. We posit that polymer precipitation onto emulsion droplets in non-aqueous emulsions could produce a robust shell without contamination of the core, ideal for the encapsulation of water-sensitive or water-miscible materials. Solutions of commodity polymers were added to the continuous phase of non-aqueous Pickering emulsions stabilized by alkylated graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets such that the change in solubility of the polymer led to formation of robust shells and the production of capsules that could be isolated. We demonstrate that a polymer precipitation approach can produce capsules with pristine core of the IL 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [Emim][PF 6 ] or the salt hydrate PCM magnesium nitrate hexahydrate (MNH) and shell of nanosheets and polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), or polyethylene. The capsules are approximately 80 wt% [Emim][PF 6 ] or >90 wt% MNH, and the core can undergo multiple cycles of solidification and melting without leakage or destruction. This novel, single-step methodology provides a distinct advantage to access capsules with pristine core composition and is amenable to different core and shell, paving the way for tailoring capsule composition for desired applications.

Engineering Functionalized 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks Nanosheets with Fast Li + Conduction for Advanced Solid Li Batteries

Solid-state batteries can ensure high energy density and safety in lithium metal batteries, while polymer electrolytes are plagued by slow ion kinetics and low selective transport of Li + . Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are proposed as emerging fillers for solid-state poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) electrolytes, however, developing functionalized MOFs and understanding their roles on ion transfer has proven challenging. Herein, combining computational and experimental results, the functional group regulation in MOFs can effectively change surficial charge distribution and limit anion movement is revealed, providing a potential solution to these issues. Specifically, functionalized 2D MOF sheets are designed through molecular engineering to construct high-performance composite electrolytes, where the electron-donating effect of substituents in 2D-MOFs effectively limits the movement of ClO 4 - and promotes mechanical properties and ion migration numbers (0.36 up to 0.64) of PEO. As a result, Li/Li cells with composite electrolyte exhibit superior cyclability for 1000 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm -2 . Meanwhile, the solid LiFePO 4 /Li battery delivers highly reversible capacities of 148.8 mAh g -1 after 200 cycles. In conclusion, these findings highlight a new approach for anion confinement through the use of functional group electronic effects, leading to enhanced ionic conductivity, and a feasible direction for high-performance solid-state batteries.
