Comparing three generations of D-Wave quantum annealers for minor embedded combinatorial optimization problems

Abstract Quantum annealing (QA) is a novel type of analog computation that aims to use quantum mechanical fluctuations to search for optimal solutions of Ising problems. QA in the transverse Ising model, implemented on D-Wave quantum processing units, are available as cloud computing resources. In this study we report concise benchmarks across three generations of D-Wave quantum annealers, consisting of four different devices, for the NP-hard discrete combinatorial optimization problems unweighted maximum clique and unweighted maximum cut on random graphs. The Ising, or equivalently quadratic unconstrained binary optimization, formulation of these problems do not require auxiliary variables for order reduction, and their overall structure and weights are not highly variable, which makes these problems simple test cases to understand the sampling capability of current D-Wave quantum annealers. All-to-all minor embeddings of size 52, with relatively uniform chain lengths, are used for a direct comparison across the Chimera, Pegasus, and Zephyr device topologies. A grid-search over annealing times and the minor embedding chain strengths is performed in order to determine the level of reasonable performance for each device and problem type. Experiment metrics that are reported are approximation ratios for non-broken chain samples, chain break proportions, and time-to-solution for the maximum clique problem instances. How fairly the quantum annealers sample optimal maximum cliques, for instances which contain multiple maximum cliques, is quantified using entropy of the measured ground state distributions. The newest generation of quantum annealing hardware, which has a Zephyr hardware connectivity, performed the best overall with respect to approximation ratios and chain break frequencies.

Direct Observation of Collective Electronuclear Modes about a Quantum Critical Point

We directly measure the low energy excitation modes of the quantum Ising magnet LiHoF 4 using microwave spectroscopy. Instead of a single electronic mode, we find a set of collective electronuclear modes, in which the spin-1/2 Ising electronic spins hybridize with the bath of spin-7/2 Ho nuclear spins. The lowest-lying electronuclear mode softens at the approach to the quantum critical point, even in the presence of disorder. This softening is rapidly quenched by a longitudinal magnetic field. Similar electronuclear structures should exist in other spin-based quantum Ising systems.

Emergent Halperin–Saslow mode, gauge glass and quenched disorders in quantum Ising magnet TmMgGaO 4

Quenched disorders could bring novel quantum excitations and models to certain quantum magnets. Motivated by recent experiments on the quantum Ising magnet TmMgGaO 4 , we explore the effects of the quenched disorder and the interlayer coupling in this triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet. It is pointed out that the weak quenched (nonmagnetic) disorder would convert the emergent 2D Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) phase and the critical region into a U(1) gauge glass. There will be an emergent Halperin–Saslow mode associated with this gauge glass. Using the Imry-Ma’s renormalization group result, we explain the fate of the finite-field [Formula: see text] symmetry breaking transition at the low temperatures. The ferromagnetic interlayer coupling would suppress the BKT phase and generate a tiny ferromagnetism. With quenched disorders, this interlayer coupling changes the 2D gauge glass into a 3D gauge glass, and the Halperin–Saslow mode persists. This work merely focuses on addressing a phase regime in terms of emergent U(1) gauge glass behaviors and hope to inspire future works and thoughts in weakly disordered frustrated magnets in general.

Floquet product mode

Results are presented for the dynamics of edge modes in interacting Floquet Ising chains. It is shown that in addition to the quasistable 0 and π edge modes, a third long lived edge mode arising from the operator product of the 0 and π edge modes exists. Depending on the microscopic parameters, this Floquet product mode is shown to have a substantially longer lifetime than the individual 0 and π modes. This is triggered by a scattering process which converts a 0 mode into a π mode while scattering two bulk excitations. This process can lead to a rapid decay of both 0 and π mode without affecting the product mode.

Theory of magnon polaritons in quantum Ising materials

Here, we present a theory of magnon-polaritons in quantum Ising materials, and develop a formalism describing the coupling between light and matter as an Ising system is tuned through its quantum critical point. The theory is applied to Ising materials having multilevel single-site Hamiltonians, in which multiple magnon modes are present, such as the insulating Ising magnet LiHoF 4 . We find that the magnon-photon coupling strengths may be tuned by the applied transverse field, with the coupling between the soft mode present in the quantum Ising material and a photonic resonator mode diverging at the quantum critical point of the material. A fixed system of spins will not exhibit the diamagnetic response expected when light is coupled to mobile spins or atoms. Without the diamagnetic response, one expects a divergent magnon-photon coupling strength to lead to a superradiant quantum phase transition. However, this neglects the effects of damping and decoherence present in any real system. We show that damping and decoherence may block the superradiant quantum phase transition, and lead to weak coupling between the soft magnon mode and the resonator mode. The results of the theory are applied to experimental data on the model system LiHoF 4 in a microwave resonator.

Slowly decaying zero mode in a weakly nonintegrable boundary impurity model

The transverse field Ising model (TFIM) on the half-infinite chain possesses an edge zero mode. This work considers an impurity model: TFIM perturbed by a boundary integrability-breaking interaction. For sufficiently large transverse field, but in the ordered phase of the TFIM, the zero mode is observed to decay. The decay is qualitatively different from zero modes where the integrability-breaking interactions are nonzero all along the chain. It is shown that for the impurity model, the zero mode decays by relaxing to a nonlocal quasiconserved operator, the latter being exactly conserved when the opposite edge of the chain has no noncommuting perturbations so as to ensure perfect degeneracy of the spectrum. In the thermodynamic limit, the quasiconserved operator vanishes, and a regime is identified where the decay of the zero mode obeys Fermi's golden rule. Furthermore, a toy model for the decay is constructed in Krylov space and it is highlighted how Fermi's golden rule may be recovered from this toy model.

Duality defect in a deformed transverse-field Ising model

Physical quantities with long lifetimes have both theoretical significance in the study of quantum many-body systems and practical implications for quantum technologies. In this manuscript, we investigate the roles played by topological defects in the construction of quasiconserved quantities, using as a prototypical example the Kramers-Wannier duality defect in a deformed one-dimensional quantum transverse-field Ising model. We construct the duality defect Hamiltonian in three different ways: half-chain Kramers-Wannier transformation, utilization of techniques in the Ising fusion category, and defect-modified weak integrability breaking deformation. The third method is also applicable for the study of generic integrable defects under weak integrability breaking deformations. We also work out the deformation of defect-modified higher charges in the model and study their slower decay behavior. Furthermore, we consider the corresponding duality defect twisted deformed Floquet transverse-field Ising model and investigate the stability of the isolated zero mode associated with the duality defect in the integrable Floquet Ising model, under such weak integrability breaking deformation.

Magnetic properties of the Ising-like rare earth pyrosilicate: D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7

Ising-like spin-1/2 magnetic materials are of interest for their ready connection to theory, particularly in the context of quantum critical behavior. In this work we report detailed studies of the magnetic properties of a member of the rare earth pyrosilicate family, D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 , which is known to display a highly anisotropic Ising-like g-tensor and effective spin-1/2 magnetic moments. We used powder neutron diffraction, powder inelastic neutron spectroscopy (INS), and single crystal AC susceptibility to characterize its magnetic properties. Neutron diffraction enabled us to determine the magnetic structure below the known transition temperature (T N = 1.9 K) in zero field, confirming that the magnetic state is a four-sublattice antiferromagnetic structure with two non-collinear Ising axes, as was previously hypothesized. Our powder INS data revealed a gapped excitation at zero field, consistent with anisotropic (possibly Ising) exchange. An applied field of 1 T produces a mode softening, which is consistent with a field-induced second order phase transition. To assess the relevance of D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 to the transverse field Ising model, we performed AC susceptibility measurements on a single crystal with the magnetic field oriented in the direction transverse to the Ising axes. This revealed a transition at 2.65 T at 0.1 K, a field significantly higher than the mode-softening field observed by powder INS, showing that the field-induced phase transitions are highly field-direction dependent as expected. Furthermore, these measurements suggest that D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 may be a candidate for further exploration related to the transverse field Ising model.

Universal topological quantum computation with strongly correlated Majorana edge modes

Abstract Majorana-based quantum gates are not complete for performing universal topological quantum computation while Fibonacci-based gates are difficult to be realized electronically and hardly coincide with the conventional quantum circuit models. In reference Hu and Kane (2018 Phys. Rev. Lett. 120 066801), it has been shown that a strongly correlated Majorana edge mode in a chiral topological superconductor can be decomposed into a Fibonacci anyon τ and a thermal operator anyon ɛ in the tricritical Ising model. The deconfinement of τ and ɛ via the interaction between the fermion modes yields the anyon collisions and gives the braiding of either τ or ɛ . With these braidings, the complete members of a set of universal gates, the Pauli gates, the Hadamard gate and extra phase gates for one-qubit as well as controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate for two-qubits, are topologically assembled. Encoding quantum information and reading out the computation results can be carried out through electric signals. With the sparse-dense mixed encodings, we set up the quantum circuit where the CNOT gate turns out to be a probabilistic gate and design the corresponding devices with thin films of the chiral topological superconductor. As an example of the universal topological quantum computing, we show the application to Shor’s integer factorization algorithm.

Gallery of soft modes: Theory and experiment at a ferromagnetic quantum phase transition

We examine the low-energy excitations in the vicinity of the quantum critical point in LiHoF4, a physical realization of the Transverse Field Ising Model, focusing on the long-range fluctuations which soften to zero energy at the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. Microwave spectroscopy in tunable loop-gap resonator structures identifies and characterizes the electronuclear soft mode and higher-energy electronuclear states as a function of frequency and magnetic fields applied transverse and parallel to the Ising axis. These are understood in the context of a theoretical model of a soft electronuclear mode that interacts with soft photons as well as soft phonons. We identify competing infrared divergences at the quantum critical point, coming from the photons and the electronuclear soft mode. It is an incomplete cancellation of these divergences that leads to the muted but distinct signatures observed in the experiments. The application of a longitudinal magnetic field gaps the soft mode. As a result, measurements well away from the quantum critical point reveal a set of "Walker'' modes associated with ferromagnetic domain dynamics.

Fusion dynamics of Majorana zero modes

Braiding and fusion of Majorana zero modes are key elements of any future topological Majorana-based quantum computer. In this article, we investigate the fusion dynamics of Majorana zero modes in the spinless Kitaev model, as well as in a spinful model describing magnet-superconductor hybrid structures. We consider various scenarios allowing us to reproduce the fusion rules of the Ising anyon model. Particular emphasis is given to the charge of the fermion obtained after fusing two Majorana zero modes: as long as it remains on the superconductor, charge quantization is absent. When moving the fermion to a nonsuperconducting region, such as a quantum dot, nearly quantized charge can be measured. Our findings confirm for both platforms that fusion dynamics of Majorana zero modes can indeed be used for the readout of Majorana qubits.

Topological phase diagram of generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models with interactions

We investigate interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains with two- and three-site unit cells using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. By selecting appropriate filling fractions and sweeping across interaction strength 𝐽 𝑧 and dimerization 𝛿, we map out their phase diagrams and identify transition lines via entanglement entropy and magnetization measurements. In the two-site model, we observe the emergence of an interaction-induced antiferromagnetic intermediate phase between the topologically trivial and nontrivial regimes, as well as a critical region at negative 𝐽 𝑧 with suppressed magnetization and finite-size scaling of entanglement entropy. In contrast, the three-site model lacks an intermediate phase and exhibits asymmetric edge localization and antiferromagnetic ordering in both positive and negative 𝐽 𝑧 regimes. We further examine the response of edge states to Ising perturbations. In the two-site model, zero-energy edge modes are topologically protected and remain robust up to a finite interaction strength. However, in the three-site model, where the edge states reside at finite energy, this protection breaks down. Despite this, the edge-localized nature of these states survives in the form of polarized modes whose spatial profiles reflect the noninteracting limit.

Network construction of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids

We use a network of chiral junctions to construct a family of topological chiral spin liquids in two spatial dimensions. The chiral spin liquid phase harbors SU(2) _k k anyons, which stem from the underlying SU(2) _k k WZW models that describe the constituent spin chains of the network. The network exhibits quantized spin and thermal Hall conductances. We illustrate our construction by inspecting the topological properties of the SU(2) _2 2 model. We find that this model has emergent Ising anyons, with spinons acting as vortex excitations that bind Majorana zero modes. We also show that the ground state of this network is threefold degenerate on the torus, asserting its non-Abelian character. Our results shed new light on the stability of non-Abelian topological phases in artificial quantum materials.

Thermal Probes of Phonon-Coupled Kitaev Spin Liquids: From Accurate Extraction of Quantized Edge Transport to Anyon Interferometry

Recent theoretical studies inspired by experiments on the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl 3 highlight the nontrivial impact of phonons on the thermal Hall conductivity of chiral topological phases. Here, we introduce mixed mesoscopic-macroscopic devices that allow refined thermal-transport probes of non-Abelian spin liquids with Ising topological order. These devices feature a quantum-coherent region with quantized or negligible phonon conductance, flanked by macroscopic lobes that facilitate efficient thermalization between chiral Majorana edge modes and bulk phonons. We show that our devices enable (i) accurate determination of the quantized thermal Hall conductivity, (ii) identification of non-Abelian Ising anyons via the temperature dependence of the thermal conductance, and, most interestingly, (iii) single-anyon detection through heat-based anyon interferometry. Analogous results apply broadly to phonon-coupled chiral topological orders.

Electronic nematic order in the normal state of strontium ruthenate

Despite significant achievements in characterizing the properties of Sr 2 ⁢RuO 4 over the last three decades, the precise nature of its electronic ground state is still unresolved. In this work, we provide a missing piece of the puzzle by uncovering evidence of electronic nematic order in the normal state of Sr 2 ⁢RuO 4 , revealed by ultrafast time-resolved optical dichroism measurements of uniaxially strained thin films. This nematic order, whose domains are aligned by the strain, spontaneously breaks the fourfold rotational symmetry of the crystal. The temperature dependence of the dichroism resembles an Ising-like order parameter, and optical pumping induces a coherent oscillation of its amplitude mode. The existence of electronic nematic order in the normal state of Sr2⁢RuO4 may have consequences for the form and mechanism of superconductivity in this material.

Universal quantum operation of spin-3/2 Blume-Capel chains

We propose a logical qubit based on the Blume-Capel model: A higher-spin generalization of the Ising chain which allows for an on-site anisotropy-preserving rotational invariance around the Ising axis. We show that such a spin-3/2 Blume-Capel model can also support localized Majorana zero modes at the ends of the chain. Inspired by known braiding protocols of these Majorana zero modes, upon appropriate manipulation of the system parameters, we demonstrate a set of universal gate operations which act on qubits encoded in the doubly degenerate ground states of the chain.

Universal model of Floquet operator Krylov space

It is shown that the stroboscopic time evolution under a Floquet unitary, in any spatial dimension, and of any Hermitian operator, can be mapped to an operator Krylov space, which is identical to that generated by the edge operator of the noninteracting Floquet transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) in one-spatial dimension, and with inhomogeneous Ising and transverse field couplings. The latter has four topological phases reflected by the absence (topologically trivial) or presence (topologically nontrivial) of edge modes at 0 and/or π quasienergies. It is shown that the Floquet dynamics share certain universal features characterized by how the Krylov parameters vary in the topological phase diagram of the Floquet TFIM with homogeneous couplings. Furthermore, these results are highlighted through examples, all chosen for numerical convenience to be in one spatial dimension: nonintegrable Floquet spin 1/2 chains and Floquet Z 3 clock model where the latter hosts period-tripled edge modes.

Momentum-exchange interactions in a Bragg atom interferometer suppress Doppler dephasing

Large ensembles of laser-cooled atoms interacting through infinite-range photon-mediated interactions are powerful platforms for quantum simulation and sensing. Here we realize momentum-exchange interactions in which pairs of atoms exchange their momentum states by collective emission and absorption of photons from a common cavity mode, a process equivalent to a spin-exchange or XX collective Heisenberg interaction. The momentum-exchange interaction leads to an observed all-to-all Ising-like interaction in a matter-wave interferometer. A many-body energy gap also emerges, effectively binding interferometer matter-wave packets together to suppress Doppler dephasing in analogy to Mössbauer spectroscopy. The tunable momentum-exchange interaction expands the capabilities of quantum interaction–enhanced matter-wave interferometry and may enable the realization of exotic behaviors, including simulations of superconductors and dynamical gauge fields.
