Neurospora intermedia from a traditional fermented food enables waste-to-food conversion

AbstractFungal fermentation of food and agricultural by-products holds promise for improving food sustainability and security. However, the molecular basis of fungal waste-to-food upcycling remains poorly understood. Here we use a multi-omics approach to characterize oncom, a fermented food traditionally produced from soymilk by-products in Java, Indonesia. Metagenomic sequencing of samples from small-scale producers in Western Java indicated that the fungus Neurospora intermedia dominates oncom. Further transcriptomic, metabolomic and phylogenomic analysis revealed that oncom-derived N. intermedia utilizes pectin and cellulose degradation during fermentation and belongs to a genetically distinct subpopulation associated with human-generated by-products. Finally, we found that N. intermedia grew on diverse by-products such as fruit and vegetable pomace and plant-based milk waste, did not encode mycotoxins, and could create foods that were positively perceived by consumers outside Indonesia. These results showcase the traditional significance and future potential of fungal fermentation for creating delicious and nutritious foods from readily available by-products.

TEAMER: Crossflow Turbine Fairing Geometry Optimization - Report and CFD Modeling Files

The dataset includes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and simulation files for crossflow turbines as well as a detailed project report. The report documents the project undertaken by the Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) to design and optimize a modular fairing for the Modular RivGen Marine Hydrokinetic (MHK) turbine, which enhances the efficient deployment and operation of turbine arrays. The project focused on optimizing the hydrodynamic performance of the fairing using CFD, with an emphasis on two key geometric parameters: the fairing's cross-sectional shape and the spacing between the rotor and the fairing. The analysis aimed to maximize net power output while also assessing discretized loading to evaluate ultimate and fatigue loads on the turbine components. The numerical modeling was conducted using both the commercial CFD software Star-CCM+ and the open-source code openFOAM, with the latter utilizing the actuator line library, turbinesFOAM. This dual-code approach was intended to increase confidence in the results and demonstrate the viability of using open-source tools for high-fidelity marine energy modeling. This dataset includes all necessary files for actuator line simulations in openFOAM, as well as 2D blade-resolved CFD results, along with Python and Java scripts for setting up and post-processing simulations.

High-performance data format for scientific data storage and analysis

Here, in this article, we present the High-Performance Output (HiPO) data format developed at Jefferson Laboratory for storing and analyzing data from Nuclear Physics experiments. The format was designed to efficiently store large amounts of experimental data, utilizing modern fast compression algorithms. The purpose of this development was to provide organized data in the output, facilitating access to relevant information within the large data files. The HiPO data format has features that are suited for storing raw detector data, reconstruction data, and the final physics analysis data efficiently, eliminating the need to do data conversions through the lifecycle of experimental data. The HiPO data format is implemented in C++ and JAVA, and provides bindings to FORTRAN, Python, and Julia, providing users with the choice of data analysis frameworks to use. In this paper, we will present the general design and functionalities of the HiPO library and compare the performance of the library with more established data formats used in data analysis in High Energy and Nuclear Physics (such as ROOT and Parquete). In columnar data analysis, HiPO surpasses established data formats in performance and can be effectively applied to data analysis in other scientific fields.

Used Nuclear Fuel Management Using the Next Generation System Analysis Model

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is leading the National effort to manage the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle, encompassing the safe transportation, storage/staging, and/or eventual disposal of used nuclear fuel (UNF) and high-level radioactive waste. The Next Generation System Analysis Model (NGSAM) is DOE’s discrete-event, agent-based simulation tool designed to model the full life cycle of UNF from reactor discharge to final disposal. NGSAM supports the DOE Office of Spent Fuel and High-Level Waste Disposition by enabling a detailed, scenario-based analysis of logistics, infrastructure, and shipping strategies. NGSAM replaces legacy models with a modern, flexible platform built on Repast Simphony and enhanced by the Process Analysis Tool. NGSAM simulates the movement and interaction of individual fuel assemblies with system components such as canisters, casks, railcars, and facilities. The model integrates with the Java Transportation Operations Model to plan and execute transportation scenarios, supporting both constrained and unconstrained resource allocation. Key features include customizable allocation and acceptance algorithms, detailed facility-level operations, and a Quick Edit tool for rapid scenario adjustments. NGSAM supports multimodal transportation modeling (e.g. rail, road, barge) and provides comprehensive cost, schedule, and infrastructure data. NGSAM utilizes data from sources such as DOE’s STANDARDS UNF database and DOE’s Stakeholder Tool for Assessing Radioactive Transportation, while also allowing user-defined inputs for scenario customization. NGSAM enables stakeholders to evaluate complex UNF management strategies, assess system performance under varying assumptions, and inform decision making for future infrastructure investments. Its modular architecture and integration with other Integrated Waste Management System tools make it a critical asset for planning the safe and efficient disposition of the Nation’s growing UNF inventory.

Recovery of Scandium from Bauxite Residue Using Sulfation Roasting-Assisted Water Leaching Process

Here, this study presents a method for recovering scandium from Indonesian bauxite residue (red mud) through a sulfation roasting-assisted water leaching process. Ammonium sulfate, (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , was chosen as the sulfate source for its lower melting point, less corrosivity, decreased toxicity, and the potential for ammonia recovery. A modified mixing system was introduced to improve the distribution of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 on red mud particles by combining them in water. A series of experiments were conducted to optimize the sulfation roasting process by examining the effects of the (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 /red mud ratio, temperature, and roasting time. Subsequently, water leaching was optimized while considering the effect of leaching time and liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio. The leaching of scandium from the roasted red mud showed rapid kinetics, even when using only water. Under the roasting conditions of 1/1 (g/g) (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 /red mud ratio, 700°C, 60 min roasting time, and the leaching conditions of 65°C, 60 min, and 10 mL/g (L/S), over 90% of scandium was recovered, along with 64.4% Al leaching and below 8% Fe leaching. These results were further corroborated through comprehensive analyses such as x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). This study offers insights into an alternative, more environmentally friendly method for Sc recovery from red mud, promoting the sustainable use of hazardous waste like red mud.
