(U) The Effect of ENDF/B-VIII.1 on Jezebel

The 239 Pu Jezebel critical assembly of 1954-55 was modeled in great detail and reevaluated using ENDF/B-VII.1 cross sections, and a new simplified (homogeneous one-dimensional spherical) benchmark was derived. The new simplified model was similar to that derived by Hansen and Paxton in 1969, but its radius was modified so that its k eff was the average of the C/E’s (where C is the calculated k eff and E is the inferred experimental k eff ) of the four detailed models. When ENDF/B-VIII.0 data were released, a mismatch between the detailed and simplified models was introduced due to changes in the nickel cross sections, because the detailed models contain nickel but the simplified model does not. A revision of the simplified model realigned the detailed and simplified models. ENDF/B-VIII.1 data have now been released. The simplified and detailed Jezebel models have been run using preliminary ENDF/B-VIII.1 ACE files. In Sec. II, it is shown that the detailed and simplified models are still aligned. No revision of the simplified model is called for. These results were computed using MCNP6.3.

Formatting and V&V of Consistent 238,240−24 2Pu $\overline{v}_p$ Evaluated Mean Values and Covariances

This report is in answer to the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program FY24 quarter 4 milestone that requires: “Format and V&V nu-bar means and covariances” for 238,240-242 Pu average prompt fission neutron multiplicities, $\overline{ν}$ p , that were obtained by a consistent evaluation leveraging the fission-event generator CGMF and a detailed uncertainty quantification of experimental data. It is described how nuclear data mean values and covariances were formatted using ENDFtk. Implementing the new 238,240-242 Pu $\overline{ν}$ p into the ENDF/B-VIII.1β 4 library leads to only small overall changes in criticality values of the Jezebel, Dirty Jezebel, Jupiter-001, Jupiter-002, EUCLID 3x2 and EUCLID 8x1 critical assemblies. Simulated k eff uncertainties due to $\overline{ν}$ p covariances change only little if cross-isotope covariances are considered or not for those assemblies with low percentage content of minor Pu isotopes. However, for the Dirty Jezebel critical assembly, that has a sizeable 240 Pu and non-negligible 241 Pu content, the simulated k eff uncertainties due to considering or neglecting cross-isotope $\overline{ν}$ p covariances is 443 versus 374 pcm.

Fast neutron leakage spectra of the EUCLID experiment

Special nuclear material in sub-critical and critical configurations measured in integral experiments are important for validation and adjustment of nuclear data. Many different evaluations of nuclear data exist, and these different evaluations can provide different values for individual cross sections that vary due to the uncertainties in differential experiments or lack of such data. For integral experiments, differences in these individual cross sections can have compensating errors, which lead to the same answer. One example of this is the Jezebel critical assembly, where k eff of the system is correctly computed by both ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3, despite having substantially different underlying evaluated values for specific reactions (such as elastic and inelastic cross sections). To reduce compensating errors in nuclear data, the Experiments Underpinned by Computational Learning for Improvements in Nuclear Data (EUCLID) project has utilized machine learning to design a set of sub-critical and critical experiments. These experiments include slab- and cube-like configurations of 239 Pu in the form of the ZPPR plates. Six different responses were measured on a total of thirteen different configurations. One of these responses, the neutron leakage spectrum, was measured using an EJ301D detector. Finally, the results of the neutron leakage spectra show good agreement (within 1–2 σ ) with the expected spectrum from simulations and will be used in the subsequent nuclear data adjustment done by the EUCLID team.

Lilith: An Enduring Plutonium Critical Assembly [Slides]

A design of an enduring Pu critical assembly has been produced. This is very important to DOE/NNSA missions. This assembly would result in advances/improvements in nuclear data validation, analytical methods validation, dosimetry, reactor kinetics, materials, and more.
