Ultrafast laser-driven many-body dynamics and Kondo coherence collapse

Ultrafast laser pulse has provided a systematic way to inspect the dynamics of electrons in condensed matter systems. In this paper, by means of time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, we study an ultrafast laser-driven Kondo lattice model, in which conduction electrons are strongly coupled with magnetically local moments. The single-particle spectral function due to strong correlation effects and photon emission in the nonequilibrium states under laser driving are calculated. We find laser field excited collective doublon-hole pairs and an associated transient melting of Kondo coherence phase, signifying the collapse of Kondo energy gap. Moreover, we show that the photon emission, induced by a strong laser field, exhibits a different intensity characteristics than in the equilibrium Kondo insulator, which could be explained by the Kondo collapse and related suppression of both intraband and interband contribution in Kondo melting liquid. This theoretical insight is accessible with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and high-harmonic generation spectroscopy and will stimulate the investigation of nonequilibrium dynamics and nonlinear phenomenon in heavy fermion systems.

Separation of Kondo lattice coherence from crystal electric field in CeIn 3 with Nd substitutions

The Ce m M n In 3m+2n (m=1,2;n=0,1) family has been one of the most studied families of heavy fermion compounds. This family has revealed many interesting low-temperature physics phenomena, like quantum critical points, heavy fermion superconductivity, and non-Fermi liquid behavior, when these materials are exposed to pressure, magnetic fields, and/or chemical substitution. In this work, we provide a thorough investigation of the Ce 1-x Nd x In 3 phase diagram through single crystal synthesis, x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements. Previous electrical resistivity measurements on CeIn 3 reveal a broad maximum, T max ~50 K, which has been associated with the Kondo lattice coherence crossover and/or the crystal electric field depopulation effect as the 4f electrons condense from the high-energy quartet down to the ground state doublet. Our findings show that in the most disordered substitution region, x=0.4–0.5, these features disjoin to reveal two distinct broad humps in electrical resistivity measurements. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity data on Ce 1-x Nd x In 3 also reveal the antiferromagnetic ordering competition between CeIn 3 and NdIn 3 , where the T N of CeIn 3 is linearly suppressed to a critical concentration of x Nd ~0.6. This concentration is slightly lower than what was previously reported in nonmagnetically substituted Ce 1-x La x In 3 . Our magnetic susceptibility measurements and subsequent simulations show that in the CeIn 3 antiferromagnetic regime, x Nd ≤0.4, the Nd ions act as free paramagnets. The large magnitude of the associated paramagnetic response then masks the overlapping antiferromagnetic ordering signature of the Ce ions. Overall our study further sheds light on the underlying crystal electric field and Kondo lattice coherence interactions within the Ce m M n In 3m+2n family and could stimulate further studies of these systems via neutron diffraction or under applied pressure.

Pressure-induced changes of valence fluctuation in β - YbAlB 4 probed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

Here we report detailed valence fluctuation phenomena in the unique quantum-critical compound β-YbAlB 4 under pressures and at low temperatures. We directly observed the drastic change in the pressure dependence of the mean Yb valence at about 3 GPa with no pressure-induced structural transition. Below 3 GPa, the anomaly in the temperature dependences of the mean Yb valence was observed at about 55 K under ambient pressure, corresponding to a previously observed reduced Kondo coherence temperature, and this temperature rapidly decreases to 22 K at 2.2 GPa, in contrast to the monotonous decrease of the high Kondo temperature (~250K at ambient pressure). The present results reveal that this reduced Kondo coherence temperature is responsible for the unconventional quantum critical behaviors in β-YbAlB 4 . Above 3 GPa, it was found that the temperature dependence of the mean Yb valence exhibits a discontinuous change at low temperature (10.5 and 9 K under 4.8 and 5.5 GPa, respectively).

Breakdown of the scaling relation of anomalous Hall effect in Kondo lattice ferromagnet USbTe

The interaction between strong correlation and Berry curvature is an open territory of in the field of quantum materials. Here we report large anomalous Hall conductivity in a Kondo lattice ferromagnet USbTe which is dominated by intrinsic Berry curvature at low temperatures. However, the Berry curvature induced anomalous Hall effect does not follow the scaling relation derived from Fermi liquid theory. The onset of the Berry curvature contribution coincides with the Kondo coherent temperature. Combined with ARPES measurement and DMFT calculations, this strongly indicates that Berry curvature is hosted by the flat bands induced by Kondo hybridization at the Fermi level. Our results demonstrate that the Kondo coherence of the flat bands has a dramatic influence on the low temperature physical properties associated with the Berry curvature, calling for new theories of scaling relations of anomalous Hall effect to account for the interaction between strong correlation and Berry curvature.

c -axis transport in UTe 2 : Evidence of three-dimensional conductivity component

Here we study the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity for currents directed along all crystallographic axes of the spin-triplet superconductor UTe 2 . We focus particularly on an accurate determination of the resistivity along the c axis (ρ c ) by using a generalized Montgomery technique that allows extraction of crystallographic resistivity components from a single sample. In contrast to expectations from the observed highly anisotropic band structure, our measurement of the absolute values of resistivities in all current directions reveals a surprisingly nearly isotropic transport behavior at temperatures above Kondo coherence, with ρ c ~ ρ b ~ 2 ρ a , that evolves to reveal qualitatively distinct behaviors on cooling. The temperature dependence of ρ c exhibits a peak at a temperature much lower than the onset of Kondo coherence observed in ρ a and ρ b , consistent with features in magnetotransport and magnetization that point to a magnetic origin. A comparison to the temperature-dependent evolution of the scattering rate observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments provides important insights into the underlying electronic structure necessary for building a microscopic model of superconductivity in UTe 2 .

Robust Surface States and Coherence Phenomena in Magnetically Alloyed SmB 6

Samarium hexaboride is a candidate for the topological Kondo insulator state, in which Kondo coherence is predicted to give rise to an insulating gap spanned by topological surface states. Here we investigate the surface and bulk electronic properties of magnetically alloyed Sm 1-x M x B 6 (M = Ce, Eu), using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and complementary characterization techniques. Remarkably, topologically nontrivial bulk and surface band structures are found to persist in highly modified samples with up to 30% Sm substitution and with an antiferromagnetic ground state in the case of Eu doping. The results are interpreted in terms of a hierarchy of energy scales, in which surface state emergence is linked to the formation of a direct Kondo gap, while low-temperature transport trends depend on the indirect gap.

Hourglass-type bulk Ni 3 d band and Ce 4 f Kondo resonance states in the potential topological Kondo semimetal CeNiSn via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic structure of CeNiSn, which is a potential topological Kondo insulator and a Dirac nodal-loop semimetal, has been investigated by employing temperature (T) dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The Fermi surfaces (FSs) and the band structures of CeNiSn for three orthogonal crystallographic planes are measured, in which both the very dispersive bands and the flat bands are observed, having mainly the Ni 3d character and the Ce 4f character, respectively. The measured FSs and ARPES bands agree reasonably well with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Fermi-edge (E F ) photon energy (hν) map along k b (=k (010) ) shows that the metallic E F -crossing states on the (010) surface have the three-dimensional character, suggesting that the observed E F -crossing metallic states do not correspond to the topological surface states of the two-dimensional character. On the other hand, albeit weak, the features of the hourglass-type bulk band crossings are observed along SXS, with the energies and the slopes being similar to those predicted by the DFT calculations, supporting the Dirac semimetallic nature of CeNiSn. In T-dependent ARPES, the Ce 4f Kondo resonance states are clearly revealed at low T, which become much suppressed above ~80 K. This feature is consistent with the Kondo temperature of CeNiSn, estimated from its ρ(T) data. This work demonstrates the importance of the coherent Kondo states in determining the topological properties of CeNiSn.

Physical properties of 𝑅⁢ Co 2 ⁢Al 8 single crystals (𝑅 = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) : An emerging structure-type for anisotropic Kondo-lattice studies

Systematic investigations of rare-earth (𝑅)-based intermetallic materials are a leading strategy to reveal the underlying mechanisms governing a range of physical phenomena, such as the formation of a Kondo lattice and competing electronic and magnetic anisotropies. Here, in this work, the magnetic, thermal, and transport properties of 𝑅⁢Co 2 ⁢Al 8 (𝑅 = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) single crystals are presented. LaCo 2 ⁢Al 8 is characterized as a Pauli paramagnet, and transport measurements, with the current along and perpendicular to the orthorhombic 𝑐-axis (𝜌 𝑐 and 𝜌 𝑎⁢𝑏 , respectively), reveal a clear electronic anisotropy, with 𝜌 𝑎⁢𝑏 ⁢≈ (4 –7)⁢𝜌 𝑐 at 300K . We show that CeCo 2 ⁢Al 8 is a Kondo lattice for which the Kondo coherence temperature 𝑇$^*_K$, deduced from broad maximums in 𝜌 𝑐 and 𝜌 𝑎⁢𝑏 at ≈ 68 and 46 K, respectively, is also anisotropic. This finding is related to a possible underlying anisotropy of the Kondo coupling in CeCo 2⁢ Al 8 . The Pr- and Nd-based materials present strong easy-axis anisotropy (𝑐-axis) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders below 𝑇 = 4.84 and 8.1K , respectively. Metamagnetic transitions from this AFM to a spin-polarized paramagnetic phase state are investigated by isothermal magnetization measurements. The Sm-based compound is also an easy-axis AFM with a transition at 𝑇 = 21.6K .

Electronic correlation induced expansion of Fermi pockets in δ-plutonium

Plutonium is a critically important material as the behavior of its 5f electrons stands midway between the metalliclike itinerant character of the light actinides and localized atomic-core-like character of the heavy actinides. The δ phase of plutonium (δ-Pu), whereas still itinerant, has a large coherent Kondo peak and strong electronic correlations coming from its near-localized character. Here, using sophisticated Gutzwiller wave function and dynamical mean-field theory correlated theories, we study the Fermi surface and associated mass renormalizations of δ-Pu together with calculations of the de Haas–van Alphen frequencies. We find a large (~200%) correlation induced volume expansion in both the hole and the electron pockets of the Fermi surface in addition to an intermediate mass enhancement. All of the correlated electron theories predict, approximately, the same hole pocket placement in the Brillouin zone, which is different from that obtained in conventional density-functional band-structure theory, whereas the electron pockets from all theories are in, roughly, the same place.

Anisotropic hybridization in CeRhSn

The optical conductivity σ⁡(ω, T) of CeRhSn was studied by broadband infrared spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent spectral weight transfer occurs over high energy (0.8 eV) and temperature (~500 K) scales, classifying CeRhSn as a mixed-valent compound. The optical conductivity reveals a substantial anisotropy in the electronic structure. Renormalization of σ⁡(ω, T) occurs as a function of temperature to a coherent Kondo state with concomitant effective mass generation. Associated spectroscopic signatures were reproduced remarkably well by the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory using a momentum-independent self-energy. The theory shows that the anisotropy for energies > 10 meV is mainly driven by the bare three-dimensional electronic structure that is renormalized by local electronic correlations. The possible influence of magnetic frustration and quantum criticality is restricted to lower energies.

Low-energy electrodynamics and a hidden Fermi liquid in the heavy-fermion compound CeCoIn 5

We present time-domain THz spectroscopy of thin films of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn 5 . Below the ≈40 K Kondo coherence temperature, a narrow Drude-like peak forms, as a result of the 𝑓-orbital–conduction-electron hybridization and the formation of the heavy-fermion state. The complex optical conductivity is analyzed through a Drude model and extended Drude model analysis. Via the extended Drude model analysis, we measure the frequency-dependent scattering rate (1/𝜏) and effective mass (𝑚*/𝑚 𝑏 ). This scattering rate shows a linear dependence on temperature, which matches the dependence of the resistivity as expected. Nevertheless, the width of the low-frequency Drude peak itself that is set by the renormalized quasiparticle scattering rate (1/𝜏*=𝑚 𝑏 /𝑚*⁢𝜏) shows a 𝑇 2 dependence. This is the scattering rate that characterizes the relaxation time of the renormalized quasiparticles. In conclusion, this gives evidence for a Fermi liquid state, which in conventional transport experiments is hidden by the strong temperature dependent mass.

Electronic structures and pseudogap nature of the strongly correlated Kondo semimetals and insulators CeNiSn and CeRhX(X=As, Sb)

Employing temperature (T)-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) near the Ce 4d absorption edge, we have investigated the electronic structures of the strongly correlated Kondo insulators (KIs) and/or Kondo semimetals of CeNiSn and CeRhX (X=As, Sb), which also belong to potential topological KIs (TKIs). Good agreement is found between the Fermi surfaces (FSs) measured at the Ce 4d→4f on resonance and those calculated and unfolded into the Ce-only Brillouin zone, supporting the crucial Ce 4f contribution to the Fermi-edge states in them. While the FSs of CeRhSb and CeNiSn are similar to each other, they are quite different from those of CeRhAs, which is understood to originate from the semimetallic Kondo ground states of CeNiSn and CeRhSb in contrast to the insulating Kondo ground state of CeRhAs. T-dependent ARPES demonstrates the existence of the Kondo resonance above the Fermi level (EF) and its T-driven decoherence in CeNiSn and CeRhSb, and the existence of the Ce 4f Kondo-like peak well below EF with a pseudogap in CeRhAs. With increasing T, the tail of the Kondo resonance in CeNiSn and CeRhSb loses its coherence, whereas the Ce 4f Kondo-like peak in CeRhAs persists up to T≥200 K. The Kondo temperatures (TKs) are estimated via the analysis of T-dependent ARPES, yielding TK≈80 K (CeNiSn), TK≈180 K (CeRhSb), and TK≫200 K (CeRhAs). High-resolution, low-T ARPES confirms the Kondo resonance just above EF in CeNiSn and CeRhSb Kondo semimetals and the KI ground state of CeRhAs with a pseudogap of Δ≈30 meV, demonstrating the importance of the coherent Kondo states in determining their potential topological properties. The differences in the T-dependent ARPES of CeNiSn and CeRhSb suggest the weaker f-c hybridization in CeNiSn than in CeRhSb (c: conduction electron), which is likely due to the more localized Ni 3d orbitals than the delocalized Rh 4d orbitals. The differences between the T-dependent ARPES of CeNiSn/CeRhSb Kondo semimetals and those of CeRhAs Kondo insulator are likely due to the smaller volume of CeRhAs than those of CeNiSn/CeRhSb.

Evolution of the Kondo lattice electronic structure above the transport coherence temperature

Significance The temperature ( T )-dependent evolution of the Kondo lattice electronic structure is a long-standing topic of theoretical and experimental investigation, still lacking a truly microscopic theory that agrees with a full experimental characterization. Here multiple characteristic T scales of the interaction of localized f moments with conduction electrons in the Kondo lattice CeCo I n 5 are identified and investigated using angle-resolved photoemission measurements that substantiate dynamical mean-field theory which newly includes the full realism of crystalline electric-field (CEF) f splittings. Thereby errors in the itinerant versus localized f -state classification from standard density functional theory are corrected, microscopic insight into the broad T -range crossover of f -hybridization effects is gained, and a prediction of CEF degeneracy crossover below the lattice coherence T is made.

Surface Local Impurity Scattering as a Probe for Topological Kondo Insulators

Shortly after the discovery of topological band insulators, topological Kondo insulators (TKIs) is also theoretically predicted. The latter has ignited revival interest in the properties of Kondo insulators. Currently, the feasibility of topological nature in SmB 6 is intensively analyzed by several complementary probes. Here by starting with a minimal-orbital Anderson lattice model, the local electronic structure is explored in a Kondo insulator. It is showed that the two strong topological regimes sandwiching the weak topological regime give rise to a single Dirac cone, which is located near the center or corner of the surface Brillouin zone. It is further found that, when a single impurity is placed on the surface, low-energy resonance states are induced in the weak scattering limit for the strong TKI regimes and the resonance level moves monotonically across the hybridization gap with the strength of impurity scattering potential; while low energy states can only be induced in the unitary scattering limit for the weak TKI regime, where the resonance level moves universally toward the center of the hybridization gap. These impurity-induced low-energy quasiparticles will lead to characteristic signatures in scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, which has recently found success in probing into exotic properties in heavy fermion systems.

Local lattice distortions and electronic orders in strongly correlated systems by resonant total x-ray scattering: A case study of A Pt 2 X 2 intermetallics ( A = U , Ce, or La and X = Si or Ge)

Revealing local lattice distortions in physical systems is nontrivial, largely because such structural features often are not necessarily amenable to traditional crystallographic investigations. This poses limits to our understanding of the underlying physic, particularly in the case of strongly correlated systems where structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom are intertwined. Using resonant total x-ray scattering coupled to differential pair distribution function analysis, we reveal the presence of pronounced local lattice distortions in the square net Pt planes in the prototypical strongly correlated APt 2 X 2 intermetallics (A = U, Ce or La and X = Si or Ge). The distortions are present before charge density wave, magnetic, Kondo lattice coherence and/or superconducting orders emerge in these materials and, as density functional calculations suggest, are likely to affect them. Finally, our study sheds light on the poorly known interactions between electronic orders and structural disorder in strongly correlated systems and also demonstrates an advanced experimental approach to determine it that is relevant to any physical system showing deviations from perfect crystallinity.

Charge density wave with anomalous temperature dependence in UPt 2 Si 2

Using single-crystal neutron and x-ray diffraction, we discovered a charge density wave (CDW) below 320 K, which accounts for the long-sought origin of the heat capacity and resistivity anomalies in UPt 2 Si 2 . The modulation wave vector, Q mod , is intriguingly similar to the incommensurate wave vector of URu 2 Si 2 . Q mod shows an unusual temperature dependence, shifting from commensurate to incommensurate position upon cooling and becoming locked at aproximately (0.42 0 0) near 180 K. Furthermore, bulk measurements indicate a crossover toward a correlated coherent state around the same temperature, suggesting an interplay between the CDW and Kondo-lattice-like coherence before coexisting antiferromagnetic order sets in at T N =35 Κ.

Dual nature of magnetism driven by momentum dependent f-d Kondo hybridization

The intricate nature of magnetism in uranium-based Kondo lattices is a consequence of correlations between U-5 f and conduction electrons. Previously, the source of magnetism has been ascribed to either Mott physics or Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction, both of which are not fully applicable to uranium-based Kondo lattices. Using linearized quasiparticle self-consistent GW plus dynamical mean-field theory, we demonstrate a crossover from incoherent to coherent f - d Kondo cloud in the paramagnetic phase of UTe 2 , USbTe and USbSe. As the transition occurs, we observe an augmented f - d coherence and Pauli-like magnetic susceptibility, with a substantial frozen magnetic moment of U-5 f persisting. We show that momentum dependent f - d hybridization is responsible for the magnetic moments arising from the renormalized f electrons’ van Hove singularity. Our findings provide a perspective to explain the dual nature of magnetism and the long-range magnetic ordering induced by pressure in UTe 2 .

Proximity-Induced Superconductivity in a 2D Kondo Lattice of an f -Electron-Based Surface Alloy

Realizing hybrids of low-dimensional Kondo lattices and superconducting substrates leads to fascinating platforms for studying the exciting physics of strongly correlated electron systems with induced superconducting pairing. Here, we report a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of a new type of two-dimensional (2D) La–Ce alloy grown epitaxially on a superconducting Re(0001) substrate. We observe the characteristic spectroscopic signature of a hybridization gap evidencing the coherent spin screening in the 2D Kondo lattice realized by the ultrathin La–Ce alloy film on normal conducting Re(0001). Upon lowering the temperature below the critical temperature of rhenium, a superconducting gap is induced exhibiting an energy asymmetry of the coherence peaks that arises from the interaction of residual unscreened magnetic moments with the superconducting substrate. A positive correlation between the Kondo hybridization gap and the asymmetry of the coherence peaks is found.
