Lunar and Planetary X-Ray Diffraction Program: Progress Report of Research and Instrument Development, July 1964 to March 1965

The Lunar and Planetary X-Ray Diffraction Program consists of three concurrent efforts aimed at rapid development of a first-generation flight-instrument system, evaluation of potential advances in diffractometer components for a possible second-generation instrument, and full investigation of the capabilities and limitations of rock analysis by X-ray diffraction. More complete descriptions of each of these studies are given below; the papers which follow are grouped according to these subjects in Sections II through V.

Modeling Study of Hatch Spacing’s Effect on Grain Morphology in Repairing Damaged Metal Parts with Welding and Hatch Spacing’s Potential Use in Lunar Exploration

The welding process is a potential way of repairing a damaged metal component, especially cavity damage caused by a harsh environment like the lunar environment, which is characterized by large temperature differences and reduced gravity. The adjustment of welding parameter (e.g., hatch spacing) can improve production efficiency in the repair process. Seen from the microstructural level, hatch spacing sensitivity affects the metallic grain evolution and morphology in the welding process, which can further influence a repaired part’s mechanical properties; however, the study of hatch spacing’s effect on microstructure is challenging. Traditional experimental procedures are costly and time-consuming, and any change in hatch spacing value needs roll-back of experimental procedure. A modeling study can address the above challenges in experimental observation. In this research, a modeling approach based on the Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) Potts theory was used to simulate grain evolution and morphology with three hatch spacings. Through quantifying and analyzing the predicted grain morphologies, the effect of hatch spacing on microstructure in a welding-fabricated part was investigated. The predicted grain morphologies were validated with an EBSD image of welding microstructure, which has been published before. The primary grain morphologies were columnar grains with a small amount of fine equiaxed grains formed in the scanning path centerline. When increasing the hatch spacing, the columnar grains become larger and more lengthy, while the effect of hatch spacing on the equiaxed grains is not obvious.

Qualification Progress and Mission-Enabling Capabilities of the 12-kW Hall-Effect, Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS) Thruster

An update of the 12 kW Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS) qualification and flight thruster status is provided. Three flight thrusters completed acceptance testing in 2025 and have been delivered to NASA. Environmental qualification is complete and preparations are under way for long-duration life-demonstration testing. Programmatic lessons learned associated with risk management, contract oversight, and requirement definition during the fabrication and assembly are discussed. In addition, the extensibility of the AEPS thruster to enable a variety of NASA missions is presented.

The Working Group on Extraterrestrial Resources is composed of people from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the U. S. Air Force, the U. S. Navy, Office of Engineers of the U. S. Army, U S. Geological Survey, the Department of Agriculture, and the Rand Corporation. It was organized for the following function: "To evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of the employment of extraterrestrial resources with the objective of reducing dependence of lunar and planetary exploration on terrestrial supplies; to advise cognizant agencies on requirements pertinent to these objectives, and to point out the implications affecting these goals. "

The Relevance of the VIPER Mission to NASA’s Artemis Human Exploration of the Moon

NASA has ambitious plans to send astronaut crews to the south polar region of the Moon and explore this lunar terrain with humans for the first time through a series of Artemis missions. Artemis will provide economic benefits, drive technological advancement, and inspire the next generation of explorers. Simultaneously, Artemis presents a unique opportunity for humans to conduct high-priority planetary science in situ in the south polar region of the Moon. Prior to human exploration, landed robotic precursor investigations can provide valuable information to reduce risk and maximize discovery and productivity of subsequent crewed missions. NASA’s Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) is a robotic mission designed to explore and characterize the lunar south polar region prior to crewed Artemis landed missions. VIPER is designed to explore multiple thermal regimes to characterize the lunar polar environment and regolith properties, and to explore for surface and subsurface ices. Each of these objectives are key for both scientific investigation and to detect and assess volatile deposits to support in situ resource utilization (ISRU) and a sustained human presence on the Moon. VIPER would also operate with a real-time mission operations architecture with relevance and feed-forward to Artemis crewed operations on the lunar surface. VIPER would provide key information regarding the lunar environment, scientific exploration, technologies, and real-time operations to optimize the valuable surface exploration time of Artemis crew members while simultaneously reducing risk to crew and increasing health and human safety on the lunar surface.

Simulated Lunar Gravity Testing of VIPER Loop Heat Pipe

NASA’s Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) mission consists of a rover designed to explore the lunar south pole. One of the main challenges faced by the rover during the lunar polar exploration is the adverse thermal environment. Temperatures can fluctuate more than a 100°C between day and night; potentially dropping to −246°C in permanent shadow regions. To maintain the rover components within temperature limits, VIPER’s Thermal Management System (TMS) relies heavily on Loop Heat Pipes (LHPs). To assist the design of the thermal management system, an Engineering Design Unit (EDU) LHP has been tested in several opportunities under thermal vacuum (TVAC) environment. Of particular interest was the LHP performance in lunar gravity. To that end, the EDU LHP was tested at the nominal orientation within the rover assembly, vertical, and inclined such that the gravitational component acting on the LHP evaporator and condenser was 1/6g (lunar gravity is 1/6 of Earth gravity) when compared to the vertical configuration. This paper will examine the LHP conductance as one the key parameters to assess the effect of the gravity on the LHP performance.

NASA Talks: Harsh Lunar Environments

NASA Talks - Exploration drives technology, and as NASA works toward sustained operations on the lunar surface for a permanent moonbase, it is critical to understand how the location drives what’s needed to accomplish these goals. This is especially important as we land on the lunar South Pole, which will be different and riskier than the previous Apollo landing sites. The thermal conditions will be much colder, the lighting environment is challenged with low sun angles, the regolith holds a charge in the plasma sheath, and the radiation is significantly higher than in low Earth orbit (LEO). Stephanie Sipila, Deputy Manager of Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program (EHP) Technology, Integration and Partnerships Office, provided knowledge and insight into the game-changing technologies NASA is exploring to mitigate these risks.

Raising TRL of Your Lunar Payload

Preparing payloads for the lunar surface requires rigorous testing that accurately captures the extreme environmental and operational conditions. This presentation provides an overview of the lunar relevant test capabilities at NASA JSC’s Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) laboratories as well as the Energy System Test Area (ESTA) Lunar Development and Test Facility. These facilities allow teams to assess hardware performance in dusty vacuum environments, characterize interactions with high fidelity lunar regolith simulants, evaluate mechanical and thermal durability, and understand the effects of micrometeoroid and orbital debris impacts—critical factors for certifying payloads that will operate on the lunar surface or in orbit. While Lunar power challenges such as variable illumination, extreme temperatures, and dust driven degradation will be briefly summarized, the focus of this talk is on how JSC’s test infrastructure enables developers to validate designs, reduce mission risk, and ensure compatibility with CLPS and Artemis objectives. NASA JSC’s expertise and experience help industry, academic, and government teams prepare robust hardware ready for successful delivery and operation on the surface of the Moon.

Autonomous Detection and Classification of Lunar Minerals Using a Convolutional Neural Network Based Framework for the SUCR DALI Project

NASA’s long-term goal is to deploy humans to the Moon and, from there, advance human exploration to Mars, with Artemis missions as pivotal milestones. Raman spectroscopy can uniquely identify minerals, compounds, water states, and other materials, providing distinctive fingerprints for classification. A Raman instrument has been successfully deployed and utilized on the Mars surface via the Perseverance rover, but has not yet been utilized at the lunar surface The SUCR DALI project is working towards developing a Raman spectroscopy instrument to be applied in various lunar mission concepts, including within the Artemis program. The objective of my research is to assist in the maturation of the proposed SUCR DALI lunar Raman instrument through the development of an autonomous detection and classification model capable of identifying minerals and water states on the Moon’s surface.

Powering the Lunar Surface: Managing Dust, Extreme Environments, and Power Needs

Power availability remains one of the primary constraints for lunar surface science. This talk reviews power requirements from previously flown instruments to help prepare future payloads for upcoming CLPS opportunities and highlights the testing and environmental simulation capabilities at NASA JSC that enable reliable lunar payload development. It also outlines the power needs, environmental challenges, and emerging technologies required to support sustained human and robotic operations on the lunar surface as part of NASA’s Moon to Mars strategy. Key challenges include variable solar illumination at polar and equatorial regions, extreme thermal environments, and dust driven degradation that limit current surface power systems. The science data needed for resource identification and landing site planning will allow for the successful preparation of crewed Artemis activities and long-term presence. Building on recent missions, current test infrastructure, and emerging power technology pathways, this presentation equips industry, academia, and government teams with the information needed to design robust lunar payloads, reduce development risk, and fully leverage the increasing cadence of CLPS missions. These developments will form a critical technical foundation for long duration lunar presence and future Mars exploration.

Behaviors of Lunar Regolith Simulant Under Varying Gravitational Conditions

Understanding the behavior of regolith in varying gravity conditions is critical for space exploration and future missions. In this work, the gravity-driven hopper flow of lunar regolith simulant in different gravitational accelerations (terrestrial, lunar) is first observed experimentally. Numerical simulations (DEM) are then developed to understand the role which cohesive inter-particle forces play in such gravity-driven flow, using the theoretical framework of granular Bond number. Qualitative comparison between a terrestrial experiment and numerical simulation validated this framework. Following that, we numerically studied the dynamic behavior under varying gravitational conditions (from terrestrial to lunar to asteroid gravitational accelerations). We find that this behavior is extremely sensitive to the interplay of the gravity conditions and the attractive/cohesive forces among particles. The numerical and experimental results show that the complex interaction of these forces can drastically change the dynamics of the material producing effects relevant for variable gravity applications.

Returning an Entire Near-Earth Asteroid in Support of Human Exploration Beyond Low-Earth Orbit

This paper describes the results of a study into the feasibility of identifying, robotically capturing, and returning an entire Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA) to the vicinity of the Earth by the middle of the next decade. The feasibility of such an asteroid retrieval mission hinges on finding an overlap between the smallest NEAs that could be reasonably discovered and characterized and the largest NEAs that could be captured and transported in a reasonable flight time. This overlap appears to be centered on NEAs roughly 7 m in diameter corresponding to masses in the range of 250,000 kg to 1,000,000 kg. The study concluded that it would be possible to return a approx.500,000-kg NEA to high lunar orbit by around 2025. The feasibility is enabled by three key developments: the ability to discover and characterize an adequate number of sufficiently small near-Earth asteroids for capture and return; the ability to implement sufficiently powerful solar electric propulsion systems to enable transportation of the captured NEA; and the proposed human presence in cislunar space in the 2020s enabling exploration and exploitation of the returned NEA. Placing a 500-t asteroid in high lunar orbit would provide a unique, meaningful, and affordable destination for astronaut crews in the next decade. This disruptive capability would have a positive impact on a wide range of the nation's human space exploration interests. It would provide a high-value target in cislunar space that would require a human presence to take full advantage of this new resource. It would offer an affordable path to providing operational experience with astronauts working around and with a NEA that could feed forward to much longer duration human missions to larger NEAs in deep space. It represents a new synergy between robotic and human missions in which robotic spacecraft would retrieve significant quantities of valuable resources for exploitation by astronaut crews to enable human exploration farther out into the solar system. The capture, transportation, examination, and dissection of an entire NEA would provide valuable information for planetary defense activities that may someday have to deflect a much larger near-Earth object. Transportation of the NEA to lunar orbit with a total flight time of 6 to 10 years would be enabled by a ~40-kW solar electric propulsion system with a specific impulse of 3,000 s. The flight system could be launched to low-Earth orbit (LEO) on a single Atlas V-class launch vehicle, and return to lunar orbit a NEA with at least 28 times the mass launched to LEO. Longer flight times, higher power SEP systems, or a target asteroid in a particularly favorable orbit could increase the mass amplification factor from 28-to-1 to 70-to-1 or greater. The NASA GRC COMPASS team estimated the full life-cycle cost of an asteroid capture and return mission at approx.$2.6B.

Extrusion-based Additive Manufacturing of Regolith-Filled Shape Memory Vitrimer Composite for Lunar Construction

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is visiting the moon again. This time, the objective is to explore establishing a permanent lunar base. To achieve both longterm human habitation on the moon and future deep space travel, it is crucial to make the most of the in-situ resources and build autonomous systems on the moon to support the construction of a lunar habitat. NASA’s In-situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) program aims to minimize the need to ship heavy prefabricated structures, reducing cost and enhancing sustainability. Here, we developed an economical extrusion method for printing lunar regolith-based composites using shape memory vitrimer as a binder. A rheological study is conducted to determine the extrudability of the composite with different regolith weight percentages. Several characterizations were conducted on the composites. The as-printed composites exhibited compressive and flexural strengths of 73.32 MPa and 156.59 MPa, respectively, and good impact tolerance. The composite maintained 57.92% of its mechanical properties even after the second crack healing cycle. The composites also exhibit shape fixity ratio of 90.02% and shape recovery ratio of 83.46%. The simple synthesis method, sustainability, and good thermomechanical properties make the 3D printed composite an ideal material for lunar construction applications.

Americium-Fuelled Radioisotope Stirling Generator Elegant Breadboard

High power solutions for spacecraft are becoming increasingly sought after in the new era of space exploration, with energy intensive in-situ lunar surface exploration becoming a key part of the roadmap for major space agencies, as well as commercial companies. Nuclear power provides the most feasible solution to achieve continued operation through the long lunar night, and in extended periods in Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSRs). Americium-241 (241Am) is used as the fuel of choice in European Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS). The University of Leicester have developed a number of systems using this fuel type, including a 200 Wth heat source. Building on existing international partnerships, the University of Leicester is continuing to work with NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) to maximise the electrical output that can be generated from the heat source by progressing the radioisotope-Stirling generator concept to elegant breadboard level, building on the long heritage of dynamic power conversion developments at NASA Glenn. Presented in the following conference paper is the next iteration of the Americium-fuelled Radioisotope Stirling Generator (Am-RSG) Elegant Breadboard, following on from a successful technology demonstration design conducted at NASA Glenn in early 2025. The design laid-out in this paper is a more flight-like version of the technology demonstrator, and is intended to pair with the next generation of Stirling convertor technology, the SunPower Robust Stirling Converter (SRSC). The SRSC is able to operate more efficiently at lower thermal power levels than the previous Advanced Stirling Convertor (ASC), making it more suitable for the 241Am system.
