Fast Neutron Evaluations for Advanced Lead Systems [Slides]

This presentation touches on fast neutron evaluations for advanced lead systems. This lecture covers project goals to evaluate lead (Pb) isotopes with a focus on improving predictive capabilities of fast systems. Additionally, the project sets out to benchmark available critical and shielding experiments with sensitivity to Pb and utilize RPI Quasi-Differential Scattering experiment for scattering reactions. This project will perform Resolved Resonance Region (RRR) and fast region evaluations for natural Pb isotopes with differential data on EXchange FORmat for experimental numerical nuclear reaction data (EXFOR) and ultimately will submit evaluations to the ENDF/B-VIII.1 library.

Lead Isotope Fingerprinting of Nanoscale Mineral Particles via Single Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Determining lead (Pb) isotopic ratios is of broad interest across chemical disciplines for source tracing and age determinations, but the technique is inherently limited when multiple sources of Pb are present in a single sample. Single particle methods offer a solution to directly resolve multiple distinct isotopic ratios within individual samples. In this study, single particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) was performed using time-of-flight (TOF) and multicollector (MC)-based platforms to measure the Pb isotopic composition of individual nanoscale particles. Distinct Pb isotope ratios were measured in particles from four powdered galena samples of different origins (average single-particle 206Pb/207Pb ratios ranging from 0.91 to 1.28) using both the TOF and the MC-based platforms. Differentiation of galena particles in a mixture (liberated grains and those hosted in a silicate matrix) was possible due to detecting their unique multielemental fingerprints. The differing behavior of the two galena samples during digestion was investigated; undigested galena particles trapped within silicate minerals were detected using spICP-MS, which has implications for Pb recovery in bulk-scale isotopic analysis. The multinuclide detection capability of the ICP-TOF-MS instrument allowed for the simultaneous detection of secondary constituent elements within the nanoparticles and the identification of multiple populations of isotopically distinct Pb-bearing particles in a copper ore sample, whereas the increased sensitivity of the MC instrument enabled quantification of 204Pb, allowing differentiation using multiple isotopic ratios. A single particle isotope ratio analysis module was developed within an open-source spICP-TOF-MS data processing platform, enabling its adoption across chemical disciplines.

Lead isotopic compositions of airborne particulates collected from snow and from dry deposition in the East River Watershed, Colorado and at the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory, California

The data set consists of lead (Pb) isotopic ratios (206Pb/207Pb and 208Pb/207Pb, as well as 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/204Pb) for particulate samples collected from snow and dry deposition. This was part of a study (O’Day et al. 2020) that was looking at the speciation of phosphorous in splits of these samples to evaluate the flux and bio-availability of phosphorous to the mountain sites in the study. The Pb isotopic data allow sourcing of long-range transported Pb, specifically the fraction of Pb sourced in Asia, and so a comparison of the relative distances of PM sources between the high and low elevation sites. Samples were collected at the East River Watershed, CO (dry deposition collected over Sept.-Oct. 2016, show sampling winter 2017) and at the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory (dry deposition collected over Sept-Nov 2016, July-Sept 2017, June-July 2017). The data includes Pb concentration data, as well as calculated fraction of the Pb sourced in Asia. This data set was published in part in O’Day et al. (2020) Phosphorus Speciation in Atmospherically Deposited Particulate Matter and Implications for Terrestrial Ecosystem Productivity. ES&T, https://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.9b06150

Mass radius and D-term of atomic nuclei in relativistic mean field theory

Based on relativistic mean field theory for atomic nuclei, we compute the mass radius and other radii associated with the energy momentum tensor for dozens of spin-0 nuclei across the nuclear chart. We also compute the D-term of these nuclei, the forward limit of the gravitational form factor 𝐷⁡(𝑡=0)=𝐷. The dependence on the neutron number 𝑁 is systematically studied for calcium (Ca), nickel (Ni), zirconium (Zr), tin (Sn), and lead (Pb) isotopes. Remarkably, |𝐷| does not monotonically increase with 𝑁. Instead, it exhibits local maxima and minima when 𝑁 equals a magic number and even a submagic number. This results in characteristic kinks in the mass, scalar, tensor, and shear radii of these isotopes. Our work for the first time elucidates the strong sensitivity of the various mechanical properties of nuclei to the nuclear shell structure.

Pb isotopes in anorthositic breccias 67075 and 62237 - A search for primitive lunar lead

The lunar Pb isotopic evolution is explored based on an investigation of the U-Th-Pb systematics of the primitive Apollo 16 anorthositic breccias 76075 and 62237. The isotope data for acid-leached residues from 67075 lie within or on a triangle formed by plagioclase, opaques, and a pyroxen-olivine mixture, and the isotope data for 62237 lie within or on a triangle formed by plagioclase, olivine, and pyroxene. The results suggest that the moon had high first-stage values for the Pb evolution equations from the onset.

Isotopic equilibration between dissolved and suspended particulate lead in the Atlantic Ocean - Evidence from Pb-210 and stable Pb isotopes

Vertical profiles of, on one hand, the stable Pb isotopic composition, and on the other, the ratio of total Pb to Pb-210 in suspended particles, are noted to closely track contemporaneous depth variations in these ratios for dissolved Pb throughout the upper 2 km of the Sargasso Sea near Bermuda. A simple flux model suggests that the effect of deep ocean scavenging processes on the flux and isotopic composition of Pb sinking on large particles was minor throughout the preanthropogenic, and most of the anthropogenic era: but it has become more important as surface inputs decrease to preleaded gasoline levels, perhaps exceeding the contribution of surface-derived Pb flux in the next decade.

Resolved resonance region evaluations of n+ 206,207,208 Pb for fast spectrum applications

Resolved resonance region evaluations of the major isotopes of natural lead, 206 Pb, 207 Pb, 208 Pb, have been per formed to support the development of Generation IV reactors. In this study, validation of nuclear data for lead fast reactors was performed with simulations of shielding benchmarks, integral critical benchmarks, and quasi-differential scattering measurements. Sensitivity analyses of these systems showed that elastic scattering reactions above 100 keV were the dominant reactions driving system performance. The resolved resonance regions (RRRs) of the lead isotopes extend past 100 keV, making the RRR an ideal starting point to evaluate lead cross sections. Since the R-matrix requires knowledge of bound, distant, and observed resonances, it was necessary to evaluate from 10 -5 eV up to the respective limit of the RRR. The 208 Pb RRR evaluation was extended to 1.5 MeV in order to obtain resonance parameters used to calculate new elastic scattering angular distributions up to 1.5 MeV. Resonance parameter uncertainties and covariance were generated using the R-matrix code SAMMY. The new RRR parameters show a direct improvement to the scattering kernel below 1.5 MeV which in turn greatly improves fast critical experiments over ENDF/B-VIII.0.

U-Th-Pb systematics of some Apollo 17 lunar samples and implications for a lunar basin excavation chronology

U, Th, and Pb concentrations and lead isotopic compositions of selected Apollo 17 soil and rock samples are presented. Concordia treatments of U-Pb whole samples of Apollo 17 mare basalts and highland rocks probably reflect several early thermal events about 4.5 b.y. old more consistently than do U-Pb ages of samples collected at other lunar sites. We propose that all lunar U-Th-Pb data reflect a multistate U-Pb evolution history most easily understood as being related to a complex planetesimal bombardment history of the moon which apparently dominated lunar events from about 4.5 to about 3.9 b.y. ago. Semi-distinct events at about 4.0, about 4.2, and 4.4-4.5 b.y. are evident on whole-rock frequency versus Pb-207/Pb-206 age histograms. Each of these events may reflect multiple cratering episodes. For mare basalts, complete resetting of the source rock U-Pb systems owing to Pb loss relative to U was apparently often approached after a major planetesimal impact.

U-Th-Pb systematics of some Apollo 16 lunar samples

U, Th, and Pb concentrations and lead isotopic compositions of Apollo 16 samples are interpreted as follows: (1) an early period of lunar differentiation of either global or regional scale occurred about 4.47 b.y. ago; (2) the Imbrian impact event affected many Apollo 16 samples about 3.99 b.y. ago; (3) some Apollo 16 metaclastic rocks and breccias contain a large amount of KREEP-like material; (4) lead produced in the early history of the moon has been concentrated in lunar highland soils yielding high Pb-207/Pb-206 ratios corresponding to apparent ages of more than 4.8 b.y.; and (5) South Ray Crater soils reflect the approximately 2-b.y.-old event previously proposed for the Apollo 12 and 14 samples.

U-Pb ages and Sr, Pb and Nd isotope data for gneisses near the Kolar Schist Belt: Evidence for the juxtaposition of discrete Archean terranes

Uranium-lead ages and Sr, Pb, and Nd isotopic data for gneisses near the Kolar Schist Belt and their interpretation as evidence for the juxtaposition of discrete Archean terranes were presented. The granodioritic Kambha gneiss east of the schist belt has a zircon age of 2532 + or - 3 Ma and mantle-like initial Sr, Pb, and Nd isotopic ratios. Therefore these gneisses are thought to represent new crust added to the craton in the latest Archean. By contrast, more mafic Dod gneisses and leucocratic Dosa gneisses west of the schist belt (2632 + or - 7 and 2610 + or - 10 Ma) show evidence for contamination of their magmatic precursors (LREE-enriched mantle-derived for the Dod gneisses) by older (greater than 3.2 Ga) continental crust. Fragments of this older crust may be present as granitic and tonalitic inclusions in the 2.6-Ga gneisses and in shear zones. The antiquity of these fragments is supported by their Nd, Sr, and Pb isotopic compositions and by 2.8 to greater than 3.2 Ga zircon cores.

PM2.5 Active Aerosol Collection Field Campaign Report

The long-range transport of aerosols can affect local air quality as well as contribute elements and constituents to mountain watersheds that have potentially positive (e.g., nitrate) and negative (e.g., heavy metals) effects to the local ecosystem. Isotopic analysis of aerosols can be a powerful tool for deconvolving the relative contributions of far-distant and local sources to the composition of collected aerosols. Our field campaign involved the week-long collection of PM2.5 (i.e., particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of about 2.5 microns) aerosols on filters, which were returned to the laboratories at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) for analysis. The sampling sites were located at the Gothic, Colorado Surface Atmosphere Integrated Field Laboratory (SAIL) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) and the Mt. Crested Butte, Colorado SAIL ARM sites. The original intention was to measure the lead (Pb) and strontium (Sr) isotopic compositions of the collected aerosols at high precision to provide constraints on source portioning and attribution, as well as analyze the chemical compositions and nitrogen and carbon isotopic compositions. However, severe blank issues arose that prevented the planned isotopic analyses of Sr, Pb, C, and N and severely affected the analyses of the bulk chemical compositions of the collected aerosols, resulting in the failure of the study. The issue is described in Section 2.0.

Pb, Sr, and Nd isotopic compositions of a suite of Large Archean, igneous rocks, eastern Beartooth Mountains - Implications for crust-mantle evolution

Compositionally diverse Late Archean rocks (2.74-2.79 Ga old) from the eastern Beartooth Mountains (Montana and Wyoming) were studied and shown to have the same initial Pb, Sr, and Nd isotopic ratios. Lead and Sr initial ratios are higher and Nd initial values lower than predicted for rocks derived from model mantle sources and strongly indicate the involvement of an older crustal reservoir in the genesis of these rocks. A model involving subduction of continental detritus and contamination of the overlying mantle is suggested.

Lead isotopic studies of the Samail ophiolite, Oman

The isotopic composition of Pb and the concentrations of U, Th, and Pb are determined for samples from massive sulfides and lithologic units of the Samail ophiolite. It is shown that the magma that formed the ophiolite was probably derived from a depleted mantle, similar in Pb isotopic composition to the source area of mid-ocean ridge basalt. The gross geochemical characteristics of the mantle sources have remained almost unchanged for the last 100 million years. It is also shown that the U-Th-Pb systematics of the Samail formation indicate that local vertical heterogeneity in the oceanic crust can result from crystal fractionation and metasomatism at, and near, an oceanic spreading center.

Origin of lead from green glass of Apollo 15426 - A search for primitive lunar lead

Green glass from Apollo 15 lunar clod 15426 (collected from the north rim of Spur Crater), known to be the most primitive among sampled lunar volcanic rocks, was analyzed for Pb isotopic compositions and concentrations of U, Th, and Pb. Hand-picked green glass and yellow impact glass particles were washed with water and a mixture of HBr and HF, and the washes and residues, spiked with a mixure of U-233-U-236-Th-230-Pb-205, were subjected to U-Th-Pb analyses. In contrast to the case of the Apollo 17 orange glass, the isotopic composition of lead from the surfaces of the green glass spherules is totally different from that of the spherules' interiors but is similar to the composition of lunar surface lead. Data for the interior lead yield a Pb-207/Pb-206 age of 3.41 Ga. The data indicate that lunar Pb evolved in an environment with U-238/Pb-204 ratios of 19 to 55, which is considerably lower than those for mare basalts (about 300) but higher than the earth values (6-8).

Geochronological and lead-isotope evidences for rapid crust formation in middle-proterozoic time: The Labrador example

Extensive U-Pb geochronological studies in the Grenville and Makkovik provinces have shown that eastern Labrador is underlain by two distinct crustal blocks. In order to substantiate the juvenile character of the middle-Proterozoic crustal block, the isotopic compositon of lead in leached k-feldspars from the same rocks were analyzed. The results of the analysis are briefly discussed.
