Physical interpretation of large Lorentz violation via Weyl semimetals

The physical intepretation of effective field theories of fundamental interactions incorporating large Lorentz violation is a long-standing challenge, known as the concordance problem. In condensed-matter physics, certain Weyl semimetals with emergent Lorentz invariance exhibit large Lorentz violation, thereby offering prospective laboratory analogues for exploration of this issue. We take advantage of the mathematical equivalence between the descriptions of large Lorentz violation in fundamental and condensed-matter physics to investigate the primary aspects of the concordance problem, which arise when the coefficients for Lorentz violation are large or the observer frame is highly boosted. Using thermodynamic arguments, we present a physical solution to the concordance problem and explore some implications.

PAIReD jet: A multi-pronged resonance tagging strategy across all Lorentz boosts

We propose a new approach of jet-based event reconstruction that aims to optimally exploit correlations between the products of a hadronic multi-pronged decay across all Lorentz boost regimes. The new approach utilizes clustered small-radius jets as seeds to define unconventional jets, referred to as PAIReD jets. The constituents of these jets are subsequently used as inputs to machine learning-based algorithms to identify the flavor content of the jet. We demonstrate that this approach achieves higher efficiencies in the reconstruction of signal events containing heavy-flavor jets compared to other event reconstruction strategies at all Lorentz boost regimes. Classifiers trained on PAIReD jets also have significantly better background rejections compared to those based on traditional event reconstruction approaches using small-radius jets at low Lorentz boost regimes. The combined effect of a higher signal reconstruction efficiency and better classification performance results in a two to four times stronger rejection of light-flavor jets compared to conventional strategies at low Lorentz-boosts, and rejection rates similar to classifiers based on large-radius multi-pronged jets at high Lorentz-boost regimes.

Lorentz symmetry in ghost-free massive gravity

The role of Lorentz symmetry in ghost-free massive gravity is studied, emphasizing features emerging in approximately Minkowski spacetime. The static extrema and saddle points of the potential are determined and their Lorentz properties identified. Solutions preserving Lorentz invariance and ones breaking four of the six Lorentz generators are constructed. Locally, globally, and absolutely stable Lorentz-invariant extrema are found to exist for certain parameter ranges of the potential. Gravitational waves in the linearized theory are investigated. Deviations of the fiducial metric from the Minkowski metric are shown to lead to pentarefringence of the five wave polarizations, which can include superluminal modes and subluminal modes with negative energies in certain observer frames. The Newton limit of ghost-free massive gravity is explored. The propagator is constructed and used to obtain the gravitational potential energy between two point masses. Here, the result extends the Fierz-Pauli limit to include corrections generically breaking both rotation and boost invariance.

Lorentz and CPT violation in partons

A framework is presented for the factorization of high-energy hadronic processes in the presence of Lorentz and CPT violation. The comprehensive effective field theory describing Lorentz and CPT violation, the Standard-Model Extension, is used to demonstrate factorization of the hadronic tensor at leading order in electroweak interactions for deep inelastic scattering and for the Drell-Yan process. Effects controlled by both minimal and nonminimal coefficients for Lorentz violation are explored, and the equivalent parton-model description is derived. The methodology is illustrated by determining cross sections and studying estimated attainable sensitivities to Lorentz violation using real data collected at the Hadronen-Elektronen Ring Anlage and the Large Hadron Collider and simulated data for the future US-based electron-ion collider.

Explicit Form for the Most General Lorentz Transformation Revisited

Explicit formulae for the 4×4 Lorentz transformation matrices corresponding to a pure boost and a pure three-dimensional rotation are very well known. Significantly less well known is the explicit formula for a general Lorentz transformation with arbitrary non-zero boost and rotation parameters. We revisit this more general formula by presenting two different derivations. The first derivation (which is somewhat simpler than previous ones appearing in the literature) evaluates the exponential of a 4×4 real matrix A, where A is a product of the diagonal matrix diag(+1,−1,−1,−1) and an arbitrary 4×4 real antisymmetric matrix. The formula for expA depends only on the eigenvalues of A and makes use of the Lagrange interpolating polynomial. The second derivation exploits the observation that the spinor product η†σ¯μχ transforms as a Lorentz four-vector, where χ and η are two-component spinors. The advantage of the latter derivation is that the corresponding formula for a general Lorentz transformation Λ reduces to the computation of the trace of a product of 2×2 matrices. Both computations are shown to yield equivalent expressions for Λ.

Searches for violation of Lorentz invariance in top quark pair production using dilepton events in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions

A search for violation of Lorentz invariance in the production of top quark pairs ($t\bar{t}$) is presented. The measured normalized differential $t\bar{t}$production cross section, as a function of the sidereal time, is examined for potential modulations induced by Lorentz-invariance breaking operators in an effective field theory extension of the standard model (SM). The cross section is measured from collision events collected by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass-energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.8 fb −1 , and containing one electron and one muon. The results are found to be compatible with zero, in agreement with the SM, and are used to place upper limits at 68% confidence level on the magnitude of the Lorentz-violating couplings ranging from 1–8 × 10 −3 . This is the first precision test of the isotropy in special relativity with top quarks at the LHC, restricting further the bounds on such couplings by up to two orders of magnitude with respect to previous searches conducted at the Tevatron.

Nonperturbative Lorentz violation and field quantization

Regimes of Lorentz-violating effective field theories are studied in which departures from Lorentz symmetry are nonperturbative. Within a free toy theory exhibiting Lorentz breakdown involving an operator of mass dimension three, it is shown that conventional methods suffice to achieve field quantization and Fock-space construction. However, the absence of an observer-invariant energy-positivity condition requires physical input beyond the free theory for the unambiguous identification of a ground state. An investigation of the role of thermodynamics in this context is instigated.

Lorentz factor for time-of-flight neutron Bragg and total scattering

We report the three fundamental origins of the Lorentz factor for neutron time-of-flight powder diffraction are revisited. A detailed derivation of the Lorentz factor is presented in the context of diffuse scattering modelling in reciprocal space when perfect periodicity is assumed, and the total scattering pattern is constructed in its discrete form – the factor in this case becomes 1/Q 2 (or d 2 ). Discussion is also presented with respect to practical data reduction where a vanadium measurement is usually taken as the normalization factor (to account for various factors such as detector efficiency), and it is shown that the existence of the Lorentz factor is independent of such a normalization process.

Estimate of Lorentz force effects on charged particles

Thermonuclear (TN) fusion reaction between deutrons are D + D → T + P D + D → 3 He + n where P is the proton, D is the deuteron, T is the triton, n is the neutron, and 3 He is the helion. They are born with high energies (0.82 MeV for 3 He, 1.01 MeV for T, 3.02 MeV for P, and 2.45 MeV for n). The charged particles slow down due to the drag force (stopping power). While slowing down, the charged particles deposit their energy, which may affect the TN burn characteristics. When magnetic field is present, the velocity of the charged particle would be affected due to the Lorentz force, which can affect the stopping of the charged particle. As a consequence, TN burn characteristics may change, Our purpose is to asses the importance of the Lorentz force in stopping of the charged particle, based on a simple comparison between the Lorentz force and stopping power.

Helicity, spin, and infra-zilch of light: A Lorentz covariant formulation

Highlights: • Spin and orbital parts of angular momentum. • The helicity tensor contains the helicity, spin and infra-zilch currents. • The helicity tensor is a Noether current for a duality-symmetric action. • Symmetry generator for the helicity tensor. • The helicity tensor is conserved in Lorenz gauge. In this paper, a novel conserved Lorentz covariant tensor, termed the helicity tensor, is introduced in Maxwell theory. The conservation of the helicity tensor expresses the conservation laws contained in the helicity array, introduced by Cameron et al. (2012), including helicity, spin, as well as the spin-flux or infra-zilch. The Lorentz covariance of the helicity tensor is in contrast to previous formulations of the helicity hierarchy of conservation laws, which required the non-Lorentz covariant transverse gauge. The helicity tensor is shown to arise as a Noether current for a variational symmetry of a duality-symmetric Lagrangian for Maxwell theory. This symmetry transformation generalizes the duality symmetry and includes the symmetry underlying the conservation of the spin part of the angular momentum.

Bounds on Lorentz Invariance Violation from Muon Fluctuations at the Pierre Auger Observatory

Quantum gravity theories often modify spacetime symmetries. In particular, Lorentz invariance may be violated when approaching the Planck scale. Although the scales at which interactions occur in extensive air showers induced by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in the atmosphere are many orders of magnitude below the Planck scale, these violations might still be observable. In this Letter, the fluctuations in the number of muons in the extensive air showers measured at the Pierre Auger Observatory are exploited, for the first time, to constrain Lorentz invariance violations. The bounds derived in the hadronic sector are the strongest ever obtained, and do not rely on assumptions about the mass composition of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. The fluctuations in the number of muons constitute a new and powerful observable to further explore Lorentz invariance in a region of the parameter space not accessible to other observables.

Lorentz invariance of basis tensor gauge theory

Basis tensor gauge theory (BTGT) is a vierbein analog reformulation of ordinary gauge theories in which the vierbein field describes the Wilson line. After a brief review of the BTGT, we clarify the Lorentz group representation properties associated with the variables used for its quantization. In particular, we show that starting from an SO(1,3) representation satisfying the Lorentz-invariant U(1,3) matrix constraints, BTGT introduces a Lorentz frame choice to pick the Abelian group manifold generated by the Cartan subalgebra of U(1,3) for the convenience of quantization even though the theory is frame independent. This freedom to choose a frame can be viewed as an additional symmetry of BTGT that was not emphasized before. We then show how an [Formula: see text] permutation symmetry and a parity symmetry of frame fields natural in BTGT can be used to construct renormalizable gauge theories that introduce frame-dependent fields but remain frame independent perturbatively without any explicit reference to the usual gauge field.

Lorentz symmetry fractionalization and dualities in (2+1)d

We discuss symmetry fractionalization of the Lorentz group in (2+1) d d non-spin quantum field theory (QFT), and its implications for dualities. We prove that two inequivalent non-spin QFTs are dual as spin QFTs if and only if they are related by a Lorentz symmetry fractionalization with respect to an anomalous \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 one-form symmetry. Moreover, if the framing anomalies of two non-spin QFTs differ by a multiple of 8, then they are dual as spin QFTs if and only if they are also dual as non-spin QFTs. Applications to summing over the spin structures, time-reversal symmetry, and level/rank dualities are explored. The Lorentz symmetry fractionalization naturally arises in Chern-Simons matter dualities that obey certain spin/charge relations, and is instrumental for the dualities to hold when viewed as non-spin theories.

Convergence in nonlinear laser wakefield accelerators modeling in a Lorentz-boosted frame

Laser wakefield acceleration modeling using the Lorentz-boosted frame technique in the particle-in-cell code has demonstrated orders of magnitude speedups. A convergence study was previously conducted in cases with external injection in the linear regime and without injection in the nonlinear regime, and the obtained results have shown a convergence within the percentage level. Here, a convergence study is carried out to model electron self-injection in a 2D–3V configuration. It is observed that the Lorentz-boosted frame technique is capable of modeling complex particle dynamics with a significant speedup. This result is crucial to curtail the computational time of the modeling of future chains of laser wakefield accelerator stages with high accuracy.

Quantitative phase retrieval and characterization of magnetic nanostructures via Lorentz (scanning) transmission electron microscopy

Magnetic materials phase reconstruction using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) measurements have traditionally been achieved using longstanding methods such as off-axis holography (OAH) fast-Fourier transform technique and the transport-of-intensity equation (TIE). The increase in access to processing power alongside the development of advanced algorithms have allowed for phase retrieval of nanoscale magnetic materials with greater efficacy and resolution. Specifically, reverse-mode automatic differentiation (RMAD) and the extended electron ptychography iterative engine (ePIE) are two recent developments of phase retrieval that can be applied to analyzing micro-to-nano- scale magnetic materials. This work evaluates phase retrieval using TIE, RMAD, and ePIE in simulations of Permalloy (Ni 80 Fe 20 ) nanoscale islands, or nanomagnets. Extending beyond simulations, we demonstrate total phase retrieval and image reconstructions of a NiFe nanowire using OAH and RMAD in LTEM and ePIE in Lorentz-mode-4D scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments and determine the saturation magnetization through corroborations with micromagnetic modeling. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of these methods in retrieving the total phase and highlight its use in characterizing and analyzing the proximity effect of the magnetic nanostructures.

Search for Lorentz-invariance violation with the first KATRIN data

Some extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics allow for Lorentz invariance and charge-parity-time invariance violations. In the neutrino sector strong constraints have been set by neutrino-oscillation and time-of-flight experiments. However, some Lorentz-invariance-violating parameters are not accessible via these probes. In this work, we focus on the parameters (a$^{(3)}_{of}$)00, (a$^{(3)}_{of}$)10, and (a$^{(3)}_{of}$)11 which would manifest themselves in a nonisotropic β-decaying source as a sidereal oscillation and an overall shift of the spectral endpoint. Based on the data of the first scientific run of the KATRIN experiment, we set the first 90% confidence-level limit on (a$^{(3)}_{of}$)11| of < 0.9 × 10 –6 GeV to 3.7 × 10 –6 GeV, depending on the phase. Furthermore, we derive new constraints on (a$^{(3)}_{of}$)00 and (a$^{(3)}_{of}$)10.

Quark-sector Lorentz violation in Z-boson production

Quark-sector Lorentz violation is studied in the context of Drell-Yan dilepton production including effects from Z -boson exchange. We show the chiral nature of the weak interactions enables parity-violating and spin-dependent effects to be studied using unpolarized initial states. Constraints are placed on dimensionless and CPT-even coefficients for Lorentz violation for the first two generations of quarks using measurements from the Large Hadron Collider.

S -matrix positivity without Lorentz invariance: a case study

We investigate the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes in theories in which Lorentz invariance is spontaneously broken. We do so by computing and studying the S-matrix for a simple example: a superfluid described by a complex scalar with quartic interactions. The computation is confined to tree-level, for there are no absolutely stable single-particle states, though the lifetime can be made long by lowering the chemical potential. For the 2 → 2 amplitude in center-of-mass configurations, not only is crossing symmetry violated, there appears a tree level branch cut for unphysical kinematics. Its appearance is a consequence of non-analyticity in the dispersion relation. The branch point defines a new scale in the problem, which scales inversely with the chemical potential. In this example, even derivatives of the forward amplitude are positive while odd derivatives are negative. This pattern can be understood in a general way in the limit of a small chemical potential, or weak Lorentz breaking.
