Correction to the luni-solar precession from very long baseline interferometry

The redetermination of the luni-solar precession is performed by using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) catalogues of extragalactic radio sources containing positions at observation epochs which cover 9 years. The positions of the sources have been determined by the VLBI network of the Crustal Dynamics Project of NASA from measurements covering consecutive half year and one year intervals between 1981 and 1989. In the course of their reduction the International Astronomical Union (IAU) recommended precession terms were applied. On the assumption of an imperfection of the luni-solar precession it is expected that the positions of each source obtained at different epochs but uniformly reduced to the reference system J2000.0 exhibit an apparent proper motion. We attributed this motion tentatively to precession and solved for a correction of the luni-solar precession by making a least squares fit to the position differences between homonymous sources in the set of catalogues. The 18.6 yr terms of nutation entered the process as parameters the values of which were set by choice from the reservoir of recent determinations. Twenty-five sources contributed to the analysis with the effect that the annual and semi-annual catalogues contain 16 sources on the average. The analysis confirmed the slightly overestimated IAU value of the luni-solar precession yielding a mean correction of -3.59 +/- 1.14 mas/yr from the annual and -3.84 +/- 1.16 mas/yr from the semi-annual catalogues. We discuss these secular terms and their dependence on the adopted nutation terms.

Luni-solar precession - Determination from lunar laser ranges

Two decades oflunar laser ranges have been analyzed to determine corrections to the earth's luni-solar precession constant and 18.6 yr nutation coefficients. The correction to the IAU-adopted precession constant is -2.7 + or - 0.4 milliarcsec/yr (mas/yr), giving the luni-solar precession constant as 50.3851 arcsec/yr at J2000. The 18.6 yr nutation of the pole is found to be 3.0 + or - 1.5 mas larger in magnitude than the 1980 IAU series. The correction to the annual term, previously discovered by VLBI, is found to be 1.8 + or - 0.5 mas if assumed to be a circular correction to the nutation of the pole.

Evaluation of geopotential and luni-solar perturbations by a recursive algorithm

The disturbing functions due to the geopotential and Luni-solar attractions are linear and bilinear forms in spherical harmonics. Making use of recurrence relations for the solid spherical harmonics and their derivatives, recurrence formulas are obtained for high degree terms as function of lower degree for any term of those disturbing functions and their derivative with respect to any element. The equations obtained are effective when a numerical integration of the equations of motion is appropriate. In analytical theories, they provide a fast way of obtaining high degree terms starting from initial very simple functions.

One-impulse targeting strategy for longitudinal drift control of geosynchronous spacecraft subject to tesseral harmonics and luni-solar gravity perturbations

Kamel's (1973) East-West Stationkeeping Analysis is extended and an algorithm is presented that targets the geosynchronous spacecraft to the ideal initial conditions starting from any given relative longitude deviation within a given tolerance deadband in order to repeat the ideal longitudinal drift cycle that results in the longest possible period of time between maneuvers. The motion description takes into account the perturbations introduced by earth's tesseral harmonics and by the luni-solar gravity, assuming a near-circular orbit that requires only the control of orbital energy to repeat the ideal drift cycle via a single impulsive velocity change. The location of the maneuver along the orbit is such that the post-Delta-V eccentricity is always minimized.

A complete spherical harmonic approach to luni-solar tides

In this work a spherical harmonic theory of ocean tides is presented. The theory is based on Laplace tide equations modified to include turbulence with constant eddy viscosity, linearized bottom friction, and oceanic loading and self-gravitation. Variable bathymetry is also treated in harmonic terms, and no-flow boundary conditions are applied at continental coastlines. The tide and boundary constraint equations are reduced to matrix form and solved by a weighted least-squares procedure. Five zonal luni-solar tides, ranging in period from 14 days to 18.6 yr, are investigated using the theory; such tides have typically been difficult to compute using traditional numerical approaches. The polar motion and changes in the length of day induced by these long-period tides are calculated. Tidal solutions are compared extensively with results from other tidal theories and from recent satellite and sea-level observations. The greatest limitation to accurate prediction of zonal tides - for any theory - appears to be the marginal failure of all tide theories to conserve mass globally; the use of additional mass constraints may be warranted.

Moon drops /a new viewpoint on the origin of tektites/ <slezy luny<

This article covers the hypothesis that tektites are minerals of lunar origin. Several tektite sites are described with emphasis given to the australites. It was found that the australites came across the melting point twice, and their age was established by uranium tracks are being about 700,000 years. Their contents of 10.2% nickel along with two combinations of schreibersite and troilite only found in extraterrestrial bodies do not exclude the fact that the origin of tektites might be located much further in space than the moon.
