Vacuum ultraviolet Mach-Zehnder interferometer with CaF2 optics

CaF2 beam splitters and compensation and test cell windows have been installed in a VUV Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Results of an evaluation of their performance in the VUV, namely, a measurement of the oscillator strength (f value) of the resonance transition at atomic xenon at 146.9610 nm are reported.

An Experimental Investigation of Transonic Flow Past Two-Dimensional Wedge and Circular-Arc Sections Using A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

Report presents the results of interferometer measurements of the flow field near two-dimensional wedge and circular-arc sections of zero angle of attack at high-subsonic and low-supersonic velocities. Both subsonic flow with local supersonic zone and supersonic flow with detached shock wave have been investigated. Pressure distributions and drag coefficients as a function of Mach number have been obtained. The wedge data are compared with the theoretical work on flow past wedge sections of Guderley and Yoshihara, Vincenti and Wagner, and Cole. Pressure distributions and drag coefficients for the wedge and circular-arc sections are presented throughout the entire transonic range of velocities.

Detection of ultrasonic waves in solids by an optical fiber interferometer

An optical fiber interferometer was developed for the detection of ultrasonic waves in solids. The optical paths in both the signal and reference arms of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer are through the cores of similar lengths of single mode fiber mode stripped at both input and output. Instantaneous translation of the pattern is proportional to the localized strain produced by ultrasonic bulk waves generated in the disc and integrated along the fiber path. By spatially filtering the moving fringe pattern and synchronously demodulating the filtered optical intensity distirbution, a signal proportional to the integrated strain is obtained.

A New Simple Interferometer for Obtaining Quantitatively Evaluable Flow Patterns

The method described in the present report makes it possible to obtain interferometer records with the aid of any one of the available Schlieren optics by the addition of very simple expedients, which fundamentally need not to be inferior to those obtained by other methods, such as the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, for example. The method is based on the fundamental concept of the phase-contrast process developed by Zernike, but which in principle has been enlarged to such an extent that it practically represents an independent interference method for general applications. Moreover, the method offers the possibility, in case of necessity, of superposing any apparent wedge field on the density field to be gauged. The theory is explained on a purely physical basis and illustrated and proved by experimental data. A number of typical cases are cited and some quantitative results reported.

Astronomical monochromatic imaging as applied to the Io sodium cloud

Four types of instruments for recording monochromatic astronomical images are compared: filters; slitless spectrographs; multislit spectrographs; and interferometers. Each of these instruments has been used on the sodium emission cloud of Io, with varying degrees of success. Multislit spectrographs and interferometers encode the signal, and it can be extracted with a noise level close to that for photon statistics. This is not normally the case for filters and slitless spectrographs. On balance, it is found that a Mach-Zehnder interferometer provides the best system for imaging faint monochromatic signals on a brighter continuum background.

Alignment of a two-beam interferometer

Two beam interferometers have been proposed for space applications such as sensing the shape of a large antenna. Since alignment and adjustment of interferometers have long been considered difficult laboratory tasks, the question of making their operation sufficiently automatic for space applications is a serious one. As a first step in addressing this question certain manual procedures, which may not be well known, have been collected from widely scattered sources. These techniques are illustrated by two examples: (1) the alignment of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the adjustment of fringe location. (2) The adjustment of a Michelson interferometer for zero path difference (white light fringes).

Oscillator strengths of ultraviolet Ni I lines from hook-method and absorption measurements in a furnace

Measurements of the oscillator strengths of the ultraviolet lines of neutral nickel obtained by the use of the combined hook and absorption technique are reported. A total of 221 transitions in the range 1964-4094 A was measured for nickel atoms from a high-temperature graphite furnace (2000-2500 K) using a continuum background source, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a 3-m Czerny-Turner spectrograph. Hook and absorption measurements are presented, and radiative lifetimes are derived from log gf values. Comparison of the present values with previous results indicates only those of Bell et al. (1966) and Lennard et al. (1975) to consistently agree with the data presented, although the reliability laser-excitation technique of lifetime measurement is supported over that of Hanle methods.

New versions of old flow visualization systems

A small, modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer placed in series with a much larger schlieren optical system spanning the test section is examined. In one arm of the interferometer, light from the schlieren is focused through a pinhole and recollimating lens to produce a reference beam which interferes with the remaining object beam from the other arm. The object and reference beams are separated only over a small interval following the test section, and differential vibrations are greatly reduced. Color schlieren has technical, as well as aesthetic, advantages over black-and-white schlieren. Since each color is associated with a specific amount of refraction, quantitative evaluation of certain refractive-index fields becomes possible using very simple equations derived from ray trace theory. Rainbow schlieren of an acetylene flame, and the evaluated refractive index distribution are shown. Root-mean-square refractive index fluctuations in homogeneous, isotropic turbulence were determined using the rainbow schlieren, since these fluctuations determine the root-mean-square refraction, which is indicated by the overall color of the image.

Fabrication of a 16-channel integrated optical data preprocessor

A 16-channel integrated optical data preprocessor based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer configuration has been fabricated on a LiNbO3 substrate. The fabrication procedure is reviewed and a detailed discussion of the steps utilized to integrate the individual components is presented. The results of the device testing experiments are also discussed.

Laser-excitation technique for the measurement of absolute transition probabilities of weak atomic lines

A new technique is presented for the measurement of transition probabilities for weak allowed, intersystem, and forbidden lines. The method exploits the fact that oscillator strength is proportional to the number of stimulated absorptions and emissions produced by a narrow-band laser pulse of known energy which is in resonance with an atomic transition. The method is tested for a particular transition of Mg I with a known oscillator strength value and of appropriate magnitude. The number densities are measured using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the hook method for the lower level population and by measuring an absorption-equivalent width for the other. The apparatus consisted of a high-power tunable laser and a magnesium oven to produce excited Mg vapor, and a laser-plasma background continuum. The results are in good agreement with theoretical and other experimental data.

Interferometry and holography in a low-gravity environment

The groundwork for the use of advanced optical measurement techniques in Space Shuttle materials processing in space (MPS) experiments is being laid in tests, conducted aboard a NASA KC-135 aircraft flying a parabolic trajectory, involving a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a sideband holographic unit. The two experiments described are (1) the observation of flow during solidification, in which fluid concentration and temperature profiles were measured during unidirectional solidification of a saturated NH4Cl-H2O solution, and (2) the observation of electrodeposition flow, in which interferometry is used to provide quantitative data required in the understanding of electrochemical process transport properties. The free-floating holographic unit was operated in the microgravity environment to both test the practicality of optical systems in such conditions and test the shock and vibration characteristics of the package.
