Valley Hall Effect and Magnetic Moment in Magnetized Silicene

We investigate the physical properties of silicene with both staggered sublattice potential and magnetization by using Kubo formalism, the latter arises from the magnetic proximity effect by depositing Fe atoms to silicene or depositing silicene on an appropriate ferromagnetic insulator. Based on the low-energy continuum model of the system where inversion symmetry is broken, we show that the system exhibits spin half metal state when staggered sublattice potential is in the same magnitude with mean and staggered magnetization. Besides, Hall conductivity and magnetic moment are all valley dependent, so we investigate the valley Hall effect of the system further by considering magnetization exclusively. This means carriers in different valleys turning into opposite directions transverse to an in-plane electric field. At last, we prove these results by investigating Berry curvature that characterizing Hall transport, which is also valley dependent. These effects can be used to generate valley-polarized currents solely by magnetization, forming the basis for the valley-based electronics applications.

Induced versus intrinsic magnetic moments in ultrafast magnetization dynamics

Ferromagnetic metal alloys are today commonly used in spintronic and magnetic data storage devices. These multicompound structures consist of several magnetic sublattices exhibiting both intrinsic and induced magnetic moments. Here, we study the response of the element-specific magnetization dynamics for thin film systems based on purely intrinsic (CoFeB) and partially induced (FePt) magnetic moments using extreme ultraviolet pulses from high-harmonic generation (HHG) as an element-sensitive probe. In FePt, on the one hand, we observe an identical normalized transient magnetization for Fe and Pt throughout both the ultrafast demagnetization and the subsequent remagnetization. On the other hand, Co and Fe show a clear difference in the asymptotic limit of the remagnetization process in CoFeB, which is supported by calculations for the temperature-dependent behavior of the equilibrium magnetization using a dynamic spin model. Furthermore, in this work, we provide a vital step toward a comprehensive understanding of ultrafast light-induced magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic alloys with sublattices of intrinsic and induced magnetic moments.

Phonon Magnetic Moment from Electronic Topological Magnetization

The traditional theory of magnetic moments for chiral phonons is based on the picture of the circular motion of the Born effective charge, typically yielding a small fractional value of the nuclear magneton. Here we investigate the adiabatic evolution of electronic states induced by the lattice vibration of a chiral phonon and obtain an electronic orbital magnetization in the form of a topological second Chern form. We find that the traditional theory needs to be refined by introducing a k resolved Born effective charge, and identify another contribution from the phonon-modified electronic energy together with the momentum-space Berry curvature. The second Chern form can diverge when there is a Yang’s monopole near the parameter space of interest as illustrated by considering a phonon at the Brillouin zone corner in a gapped graphene model. We also find large magnetic moments for the optical phonon in bulk topological materials where nontopological contribution is also important. Our results agree with recent observations in experiments.

Canting of the Magnetic Moments on the Octahedral Site of an Iron Oxide Garnet in Response to Diamagnetic Cation Substitution

Using neutron powder diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements, we report on the preparation and characterization of the temperature- and field-dependent properties of CaY2ZrFe4O12, a composition closely related to the high-temperature ferrimagnet Y3Fe5O12. By diluting the concentration of paramagnetic ions on the octahedral sublattice of the garnet structure, we find temperature-dependent canting of the magnetic moments. This reflects the importance of the octahedral sublattice in mediating the magnetic interactions between the tetrahedral sites and offers insight into a large number of competing magnetic interactions in the garnet structure.

Neutron star kick velocity induced by neutrino chirality flip and a lower bound for the neutrino magnetic moment

We study the neutrino chirality flip during the birth of a neutron star, produced in a core made of strange quark matter. This mechanism is applied to the neutron star kick velocity problem and we show that it is efficient when the neutrino magnetic moment is not smaller than 4.7 × 10 −15 μ B , where μ B is the Bohr magneton. When this lower bound is combined with the most stringent upper bound, our results set a range for the neutrino magnetic moment given by 4.7 × 10 −15 ≤ μ ν / μ B ≤ (0.1 − 0.4) × 10 −11 . The obtained kick velocities for natal conditions are consistent with the observed ones and span the correct range of radii for typical magnetic field intensities.

Circumventing data imbalance in magnetic ground state data for magnetic moment predictions

Abstract Magnetic materials play a crucial role in the transition to more sustainable forms of energy and electric vehicles. There is an anticipated shortage in magnetic materials in the future, and as a result there is an urgent need to discover and design new magnetic materials. Computational magnetic material design using density functional theory is daunting because of the challenge in identifying magnetic ground states from a combinatorially large set of possibilities. Machine learning offers a path forward by enabling efficient surrogate models that can more readily enumerate these states, but there is a dearth of training data available, and what is available tends to be imbalanced with too much non-magnetic data. In this work we show that the discrete and previously tackled data imbalance that exists at the level of the magnetic ordering leads to an imbalanced continuous distribution with many zeros when the data is unraveled at the atomic magnetic moment level, which subsequently leads to models with low accuracy for magnetic properties. We mitigate this by using a two-part model framework. Our scheme is able to classify atoms into magnetic and non-magnetic with an F1 score and Matthew’s correlation coefficient (MCC) of ~91% and then to provide an implicit embedding representation that maps directly onto the magnitude of the magnetic moment with a mean absolute error of 0.1 μ B . Beyond screening for new magnetic materials, we demonstrate an additional practical use case of our scheme: the provision of good initial guesses for magnetic moments in first-principles electronic relaxations. Such initialization is shown to lead to faster convergence to configurations that lie closer to the ground state.

Spin-Selective Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Chiral Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Synergistic Impact of Inherent Magnetic Moment and Chirality

Electron spin polarization is identified as a promising avenue for enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is the bottleneck that limits the energy efficiency of water-splitting. Here, in this work, we report that both ferrimagnetic (f-Fe 3 O 4 ) and superparamagnetic iron oxide (s-Fe 3 O 4 ) catalysts can exhibit external magnetic field (Hext)-induced OER enhancement, and the activity is proportional to their intrinsic magnetic moment. Additionally, the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect was utilized in synergy with Hext to get a maximum enhancement of up to 89% improvement in current density (at 1.8 V vs RHE) with a low onset potential of 270 mV in s-Fe 3 O 4 catalysts. Spin polarization and the resultant spin selectivity suppress the production of H 2 O 2 and promote the formation of ground state triplet O 2 during the OER. Furthermore, the design of chiral s-Fe 3 O 4 with synergistic spin potential effect demonstrates a high spin polarization of ∼42%, as measured using conductive atomic force microscopy (c-AFM).

Influence of the Magnetic Moment of the Probe of a Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope on the Spin-Wave Resonance Spectra

Abstract—The ferromagnetic resonance in an array of permalloy microstrips 3000 × 500 × 30 nm{sup 3} in size, which are ordered on a rectangular 3.5 × 6 μm{sup 2} lattice, is studied using magnetic resonance force microscopy with strong probe–sample interaction. This interaction induces intricate modifications of the observed spectra, which are manifested both in line splitting and in changes in shape. The dependences of the observed spectra on the sample–probe distance and the orientation of the magnetic moment of the probe are analyzed.

The Neutrino Magnetic Moment Portal

We discuss neutrino magnetic moments as a way of constraining physics beyond the Standard Model. In fact, new physics at the TeV scale can easily generate observable neutrino magnetic moments, and there exists a multitude of ways of probing them. We highlight in particular direct dark matter detection experiments (which are sensitive to neutrino magnetic moments because of the predicted modifications to the solar neutrino scattering rate), stellar cooling, and cosmological constraints.

Is there an exact magnetic moment for charged particle motion in a time-dependent, homogeneous magnetic field?

The non-perturbative guiding-centre model provides an exact alternative to full-orbit simulations of charged particle dynamics in situations where traditional guiding-centre theory may fail. We demonstrate that the charged particle motion in a homogeneous, time-varying magnetic field is a solvable example of the non-perturbative guiding-centre model. This entails showing that the exact magnetic moment of Qin and Davidson can be constructed to be asymptotic to the adiabatic invariant series of Kruskal. In contrast to the perturbative invariant, the exact invariant contains information about parametric resonances. These resonances destroy the conservation of the usual magnetic moment over very long times. This refutes some previous claims about the all-time invariance of the magnetic moment.

Dilute magnetic impurity-induced effective phonon magnetic moment in Fe-doped monolayer MoS 2

Realization of large effective phonon magnetic moment in monolayer MoS 2 has established an important route for exploring intriguing magnetic phenomena in a nonmagnetic material. The sizable coupling between the orbital transition and the circularly polarized phonon results in the large effective phonon magnetic moment. In this work, using magneto-Raman spectroscopy, we investigate substitutional doping of magnetic atoms as a tuning knob of the electronic and phononic properties of MoS 2 . We show that Fe-doping polarizes the spin of the conduction bands and introduces a localized Fe band underneath the conduction band. As a result, an additional orbital transition between the Mo 4d and Fe 3d states emerges, producing an orbital-phonon hybridized mode at 283 cm −1 . Our magnetic field dependent measurements demonstrate that this new mode carries 2.8 $\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ effective phonon magnetic moment, which is comparable to that of the undoped MoS 2 . Moreover, even though a long-range magnetic order is absent in Fe-doped MoS 2 , the local magnetic moment of Fe modifies the nature of the spin fluctuation, producing monotonically increasing quasielastic scattering spectral weight as temperature decreases. Our results highlight two-dimensional dilute magnetic semiconductors synthesized by substitutional doping as a promising material platform to manipulate the phonon magnetic moment through orbital-phonon coupling.

Gate-Tunable Phonon Magnetic Moment in Bilayer Graphene

Here we develop a first-principles quantum scheme to calculate the phonon magnetic moment in solids. As a showcase example, we apply our method to study gated bilayer graphene, a material with strong covalent bonds. According to the classical theory based on the Born effective charge, the phonon magnetic moment in this system should vanish, yet our quantum mechanical calculations find significant phonon magnetic moments. Furthermore, the magnetic moment is highly tunable by changing the gate voltage. Our results firmly establish the necessity of the quantum mechanical treatment, and identify small-gap covalent materials as a promising platform for studying tunable phonon magnetic moment.

Measuring the Muon Neutrino Magnetic Moment in the NOvA Near Detector

Measuring an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment would be a clear indication of physics beyond the Standard Model, shedding light on the correct beyond Standard Model theory or the potential Majorana nature of neutrinos. It would manifest in the NOvA near detector as an excess of neutrino-on-electron elastic scattering interactions at low electron recoil energies. Leveraging an intense and highly pure muon neutrino beam, along with a finely segmented liquid scintillator detector technology specifically designed for electromagnetic shower separation, enables NOvA to achieve a potentially world-leading sensitivity in probing the effective muon neutrino magnetic moment. This analysis, based on neutrino data collected between 2014 and 2021, corresponding to an exposure of $13.8\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target, yields a result consistent with the Standard Model-only hypothesis with a p-value of 0.31. An upper limit on the effective muon neutrino magnetic moment is set at $\mu_{\nu_\mu}<19.1\times 10^{-10}\mu_B$ at $90\%$ confidence level. Despite facing statistical limitations stemming from low cross section of the signal process, systematic uncertainties have a significant impact on this result. To address these challenges, the NOvA Test Beam experiment focuses on mitigating some of the largest systematic uncertainties within NOvA by investigating particle interactions and energy deposition in a small-scale replica NOvA detector. This thesis describes the calibration of the NOvA Test Beam detector, which is a crucial step in analysing the Test Beam data before they can be utilised to reduce NOvA systematic uncertainties.

Gauge theory of giant phonon magnetic moment in doped Dirac semimetals

Here, we develop a quantitative theory of phonon magnetic moment in doped Dirac semimetals. Our theory is based on an emergent gauge field approach to the electron-phonon coupling, applicable to gapless systems. We find that the magnetic moment is directly proportional to the electrical Hall conductivity through the phonon Hall viscosity. Our theory is combined with the first-principles calculations, allowing us to quantitatively implement it to realistic materials. Magnetic moments are found to be of the order of a Bohr magneton for Raman-active phonon modes in graphene and Cd 3 ⁢As 2 . Our results provide practical guidance for the dynamical generation of large magnetization in quantum materials.

Study of the Neutrino Magnetic Moment with the NOvA Near Detector

Predicted by the Standard Model as theoretical, massless particles, neutrinos have been the subject of many experiments since their first detection. It is now experimentally confirmed that neutrinos do have mass necessitating an extension to the Standard Model. Such an extension allows for other surprising neutrino properties, such as a neutrino magnetic moment. While neutrinos are observed to be neutral and do not couple to photons at leading order, higher order expansion of the interaction allows for coupling to the photon to occur and gives rise to a neutrino magnetic moment through quantum loop effects. This is a useful property for studying the Dirac or Majorana nature of neutrinos, as the predicted value of the magnetic moment would differ. This talk focuses on an introduction to the neutrino magnetic moment as well as discusses the current status of work being done on NOvA utilizing the Near Detector to obtain an upper limit on the neutrino magnetic moment value.

Origin of Large Effective Phonon Magnetic Moments in Monolayer MoS 2

Recent helicity-resolved magneto-Raman spectroscopy measurement demonstrates large effective phonon magnetic moments of ~2.5 μ B in monolayer MoS 2 , highlighting resonant excitation of bright excitons as a feasible route to activate Γ-point circularly polarized phonons in transition metal dichalcogenides. However, a microscopic picture of this intriguing phenomenon remains lacking. In this work, we show that an orbital transition between the split conduction bands (Δ 0 = 4 meV) of MoS 2 couples to the doubly degenerate E" phonon mode (Ω 0 = 33 meV), forming two hybridized states. Our phononic and electronic Raman scattering measurements capture these two states: (i) one with predominantly phonon contribution in the helicity-switched channels and (ii) one with primarily orbital contribution in the helicity-conserved channels. An orbital-phonon coupling model successfully reproduces the large effective magnetic moments of the circularly polarized phonons and explains their thermodynamic properties. Strikingly, the Raman mode from the orbital transition is superimposed on a strong quasi-elastic scattering background, indicating the presence of spin fluctuations. As a result, the electrons excited to the conduction bands through the exciton exhibit paramagnetic behavior although MoS 2 is generally considered as a nonmagnetic material. By depositing nanometer-thickness nickel thin films on monolayer MoS 2 , we tune the electronic structure so that the A exciton perfectly overlaps with the 633 nm laser. The optimization of resonance excitation leads to pronounced tunability of the orbital-phonon hybridized states. Our results generalize the orbital-phonon coupling model of effective phonon magnetic moments to material systems beyond the paramagnets and magnets.

Enhanced magnetic moments in Mn-doped FeCo clusters owing to ferromagnetic surface Mn atoms

Here, we provide an avenue to achieve optimized magnetic properties without relying on rare-earth elements. In particular, we focus on transition-metal nanoparticles with magnetic ordering that is rarely seen in bulk. By using first-principles real-space pseudopotential calculations, we show that Mn can exhibit ferromagnetic behavior similar to Fe when Mn is placed on the surface of a FeCo cluster. This ferromagnetic behavior of surface Mn is in sharp contrast with Mn bulk and Mn-based alloys, which are either antiferromagnetic or paramagnetic. The local magnetic moment carried by a surface Mn atom is larger than those of Fe and Co, leading to an increase of the total magnetic moment. We find that surface-Mn-induced magnetic enhancement is robust in ternary MnFeCo clusters with different sizes and various chemical compositions. Our theoretical findings provide a useful guide for designing new nanoparticles with a large magnetic moment.
