Apparatus measures very small thrusts

Measurement of very small thrusts of an ion engine are made by mounting the engine on a platform supported by leaf springs which are loaded to have a zero spring constant. Measuring apparatus includes an inductive sensor, servo amplifier, and a counterthrust feedback system.

Geodetic distance measuring apparatus

A geodetic distance measuring apparatus which compensates for the refractive index of the atmosphere is discussed. A mode locked laser system with a laser device and its peripheral components is utilized to derive two mutually phase locked optical wavelength signals and one phase locked microwave CW signal which respectively traverse the same distance measurement path. The optical signals are comprised of pulse type signals. Phase comparison of the two optical wavelength pulse signals is used to provide the dry air density while phase comparison of one of the optical wavelength pulse signals and the microwave CW signal issued to provide wet or water vapor density of the air. The distance to be measured corrected for the atmospheric dry air and water vapor densities in the measurement path is computed from these measurements. A time interval unit is included for measuring transit time of individual optical pulses for resolving the phase ambiguity needed with the phase measurements to give the true target distance.

Apparatus Measures Permeation Of Gases Through Coupons

Apparatus measures permeation of any variety of commercially available pure or mixed gases through polymeric or other material coupons of various thicknesses. Permeability measured at wide range of temperatures and pressures. Includes residual-gas-analyzer (RGA) sensor head and associated circuitry, and vacuum system. Also includes manifold with valves, through which gas of interest allowed to permeate through test coupon before traveling downstream to evacuated RGA sensor head. Temperature of test coupon monitored by thermocouple and maintained at specified value above ambient by use of electrical heating mantle or below ambient by use of bath of ethylene glycol, water, and dry ice.

Apparatus Measures Thicknesses Of Ice On Bars

Semiautomated apparatus measures diameters, at selected lengthwise positions, of nine vertical ice-coated bars in icing-research wind tunnel. Includes measuring head that travels on rails parallel to bar, driven by ball screw actuated by stepping motor. Position of measuring head along bar measured by string potentiometer, providing position feedback for closed-loop control circuit. Circuit provides for smooth motion of measuring head, and used to select various programmed sequences of motions and measurements. Measurements needed to determine degree of uniformity of icing conditions for experiments on aircraft models.

Optoelectronic Apparatus Measures Glucose Noninvasively

An optoelectronic apparatus has been invented as a noninvasive means of measuring the concentration of glucose in the human body. The apparatus performs polarimetric and interferometric measurements of the human eye to acquire data from which the concentration of glucose in the aqueous humor can be computed. Because of the importance of the concentration of glucose in human health, there could be a large potential market for instruments based on this apparatus.

Improved ultrasonic biomedical measuring apparatus

Device for making measurements of organs in living specimens and recording movements of organs is described. System uses series of ultrasonic pulses beamed into body of animal and reflected echo pulses are picked up by transducers and recorded. Diagram of equipment required and method of application is included.

Apparatus Measures Seebeck Coefficient And Resistivity

Electrical measurements made by four point probes, two of which double as temperature probes. Laboratory apparatus measures both Seebeck coefficients and electrical resistivities of candidate thermoelectric materials at temperatures from ambient to 1,300 K. Apparatus makes possible to take both measurements alternately and in rapid succession during same heating cycle, thereby reducing distortion.

Microwave/Sonic Apparatus Measures Flow and Density in Pipe

An apparatus for measuring the rate of flow and the mass density of a liquid or slurry includes a special section of pipe instrumented with microwave and sonic sensors, and a computer that processes digitized readings taken by the sensors. The apparatus was conceived specifically for monitoring a flow of oil-well-drilling mud, but the basic principles of its design and operation are also applicable to monitoring flows of other liquids and slurries.

Apparatus measures thermal conductivity of honeycomb-core panels

Overall thermal conductivity of honeycomb-core panels at elevated temperatures is measured by an apparatus with a heater assembly and a calibrated heat-rate transducer. The apparatus has space between the heater and transducer for insertion of a test panel and insulation.

Apparatus Measures Thermal Conductance Through a Thin Sample from Cryogenic to Room Temperature

An apparatus allows the measurement of the thermal conductance across a thin sample clamped between metal plates, including thermal boundary resistances. It allows in-situ variation of the clamping force from zero to 30 lb (133.4 N), and variation of the sample temperature between 40 and 300 K. It has a special design feature that minimizes the effect of thermal radiation on this measurement. The apparatus includes a heater plate sandwiched between two identical thin samples. On the side of each sample opposite the heater plate is a cold plate. In order to take data, the heater plate is controlled at a slightly higher temperature than the two cold plates, which are controlled at a single lower temperature. The steady-state controlling power supplied to the hot plate, the area and thickness of samples, and the temperature drop across the samples are then used in a simple calculation of the thermal conductance. The conductance measurements can be taken at arbitrary temperatures down to about 40 K, as the entire setup is cooled by a mechanical cryocooler. The specific geometry combined with the pneumatic clamping force control system and the steady-state temperature control approach make this a unique apparatus.
