Modeling of a Stewart Platform for Analyzing One Directional Dynamics for Spacecraft Docking Operations

A one-directional dynamic model of a Stewart Platform was developed to assist NASA in analyzing the dynamic response in spacecraft docking operations. A simplified mechanical drawing was created, capturing the physical structure's main features. A simplified schematic diagram was developed in a lumped mass model from the mechanical drawing. Three differential equations were derived according to the schematic diagram. A Simulink diagram was created using MATLAB to represent the three equations. System parameters, including spring constants and masses, are derived in detail from the physical system. The model can be used for further analysis via computer simulation in predicting dynamic response in its main docking direction, i.e., up-and-down motion.

The sodium and hydrogen gas clouds of Io

Models are developed to describe the spatial distribution of gases emitted by Io and are applied to recent observations which indicate extensive gas clouds of hydrogen and sodium in orbit around Jupiter. Hydrogen and sodium atoms are emitted from Io with velocities in the range from 2 to 3 km/sec, with fluxes of about 10 billion and 100 million per sq cm/sec for hydrogen and sodium, respectively. Hydrogen atoms may be formed by photodecomposition of gases such as NH3 or H2S released from the satellite surface and may escape thermally from an exosphere whose temperature is about 500 K. Sodium may be ejected from the surface by energetic particles or by ultraviolet radiation, and it appears that a nonthermal mechanism drawing energy from Jupiter's magnetic field is required in order to account for its release to space.

X-band slotted array test panel and test fixture

Data from the development of the X-band slotted array test band, X-band array test fixture, and the X/L-band test fixture for the Support Instrumentation Requirements program are documented. An X-band array was built and installed with an existing L-band module in such a way as to permit antenna pattern measurements in a series of nonplanar configurations that might simulate the thermal effects of nonuniform solar illumination on the array in a space environment. This was accomplished with eight X-band subpanels mounted adjacently on individually adjusted supports which were then co-mounted to a larger frame which served to mount and physically distort the existing L-band module. The L-band module is a heavy electrical breadboard array section that was fabricated to demonstrate the performance capabilities of a slotted waveguide array at L-band frequencies. Drawings, mechanical analysis, and descriptions of test configurations are presented.

Analysis of the DFP/AFCS Systems for Compensating Gravity Distortions on the 70-Meter Antenna

This paper presents the theoretical computations showing the expected performances for both systems. The basic analysis tool is a Physical Optics reflector analysis code that was ported to a parallel computer for faster execution times. There are several steps involved in computing the RF performance of the various systems. 1 . A model of the RF distortions of the main reflector is required. This model is based upon measured holography maps of the 70-meter antenna obtained at 3 elevation angles. The holography maps are then processed (using an appropriate gravity mechanical model of the dish) to provide surface distortion maps at all elevation angles. 2. From the surface distortion maps, ray optics is used to determine the theoretical shape of the DFP that will exactly phase compensate the distortions. 3. From the theoretical shape and a NASTRAN mechanical model of the plate, the actuator positions that generate a surface that provides the best RMS fit to the theoretical model are selected. Using the actuator positions and the NASTRAN model provides an accurate description of the actual mirror shape. 4. Starting from the mechanical drawings of the feed, a computed RF feed pattern is generated. This pattern is expanded into a set of spherical wave modes so that a complete near field analysis of the reflector system can be obtained. 5. For the array feed, the excitation coefficients that provide the maximum gain are computed using a phase conjugate technique. The basic experimental geometry consisted of a dual shaped 70-meter antenna system; a refocusing ellipse, a DFP and an array feed system. To provide physical insight to the systems performance, focal plane field plots are presented at several elevations. Curves of predicted performance are shown for the DFP system, monopulse tracking system, AFCS and combined DFP/AFCS system. The calculated results show that the combined DFP/AFCS system is capable of recovering the majority of the gain lost due to gravity distortion.

A boron nitride nanotube (BNNT), an electrically-insulating counterpart of a carbon nanotube (CNT), is a great nanofiller candidate for ferroelectric polymeric nanocomposites due to BNNT?s exceptional properties in piezoelectricity, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and radiation shielding capability. Fast and high-yield polar crystallization of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was accomplished by incorporating BNNTs as a nucleating agent. As-fabricated BNNT-PVDF nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to identify and quantify chain conformations. Besides, piezoelectric constants, d33 of BNNT-PVDF nanocomposites were measured and compared with that of a mechanically drawn beta phase polar PVDF. The polar transformation due to BNNT incorporation has a great advantage over conventional beta or gamma transformation methods that require (1) mechanical drawing often resulting in defects or (2) high-temperature annealing for an extended time. In addition to the fast polar crystallization, BNNTs had a role of reinforcement of the polymer matrix. The improved Young?s modulus and electromechanical coupling coefficient of BNNT-PVDF nanocomposites indicated potential applications in energy harvesting under harsh environments such as large deformation, wide temperature cycles, and high radiation.

Analogy between fluid cavitation and fracture mechanics

When the stresses imposed on a fluid are sufficiently large, rupture or cavitation can occur. Such conditions can exist in many two-phase flow applications, such as the choked flows, which can occur in seals and bearings. Nonspherical bubbles with large aspect ratios have been observed in fluids under rapid acceleration and high shear fields. These bubbles are geometrically similar to fracture surface patterns (Griffith crack model) existing in solids. Analogies between crack growth in solid and fluid cavitation are proposed and supported by analysis and observation (photographs). Healing phenomena (void condensation), well accepted in fluid mechanics, have been observed in some polymers and hypothesized in solid mechanics. By drawing on the strengths of the theories of solid mechanics and cavitation, a more complete unified theory can be developed.

Configuration study for a 30 GHz monolithic receive array, volume 1

Gregorian, Cassegrain, and single reflector systems were analyzed in configuration studies for communications satellite receive antennas. Parametric design and performance curves were generated. A preliminary design of each reflector/feed system was derived including radiating elements, beam-former network, beamsteering system, and MMIC module architecture. Performance estimates and component requirements were developed for each design. A recommended design was selected for both the scanning beam and the fixed beam case. Detailed design and performance analysis results are presented for the selected Cassegrain configurations. The final design point is characterized in detail and performance measures evaluated in terms of gain, sidelobe level, noise figure, carrier-to-interference ratio, prime power, and beamsteering. The effects of mutual coupling and excitation errors (including phase and amplitude quantization errors) are evaluated. Mechanical assembly drawings are given for the final design point. Thermal design requirements are addressed in the mechanical design.
