Fluorescent Particle Vertical Profiles at CoURAGE (FPVPC) Field Campaign Report

The Fluorescent Particle Vertical Profiles at CoURAGE (FPVPC) campaign was designed to characterize the vertical distribution of bioaerosol-relevant particles at the urban-rural interface sampled during the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility’s Coast-Urban-Rural Atmospheric Gradient Experiment (CoURAGE). Bioaerosols, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, pollen, spores, and biological fragments, can affect cloud formation, disease transmission, allergen exposure, and biogeochemical cycling. Although ground-level bioaerosol abundance and composition have been studied extensively, their vertical distributions remain poorly constrained across different ecosystems, source regions, and meteorological regimes. The CoURAGE deployment addresses this gap by pairing ARM tethered balloon system (TBS)vertical profiling with in situ single-particle fluorescence measurements and offline single-particle chemical analysis.

Tethered Balloon System Ozone Profiles during CoURAGE Summer Intensive Operational Period Field Campaign Report

During the summer IOP, the small ARM field campaign CRGTBSO3 collected measurements to gain an improved understanding of differences between the atmospheric composition in and just above the marine layer at the CoURAGE TBS site near the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay. CRGTBSO3 included guest instrumentation with ozone (O 3 ) profile measurements on the TBS and surface O3 and meteorological measurements at the TBS site. An En-Sci 2Z electrochemical cell (ECC) ozonesonde (Komhyr 1969, 1986, Witte et al. 2018) was included on the TBS. The ozonesonde was connected to an InterMet iMet-4RSB radiosonde, and the overall data collected included vertical profiles of ozone, relative humidity, temperature, pressure, and altitude. The CRGTBSO3 iMet-4 radiosonde data is identical to that of the iMet in the Tethered Balloon System Merged Data Product (TBSMERGED; Gaustad and Dexheimer 2025). The TBSMERGED data product also includes meteorological data from a different sensor, the iMet XQ2. In some cases, the iMet XQ2 relative humidity (RH) data may be more accurate than the iMet-4, such as for some instances when the iMet-4 RH data stays at 100% for an extended period throughout a profile.

Observing low-altitude features in ozone concentrations in a shoreline environment via uncrewed aerial systems

Abstract. Ozone is a pollutant formed in the atmosphere by photochemical processes involving nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when exposed to sunlight. Tropospheric boundary layer ozone is regularly measured at ground stations and sampled infrequently through balloon, lidar, and crewed aircraft platforms, which have demonstrated characteristic patterns with altitude. Here, to better resolve vertical profiles of ozone within the atmospheric boundary layer, we developed and evaluated an uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) platform for measuring ozone and meteorological parameters of temperature, pressure, and humidity. To evaluate this approach, a UAS was flown with a portable ozone monitor and a meteorological temperature and humidity sensor to compare to tall tower measurements in northern Wisconsin. In June 2020, as a part of the WiscoDISCO20 campaign, a DJI M600 hexacopter UAS was flown with the same sensors to measure Lake Michigan shoreline ozone concentrations. This latter UAS experiment revealed a low-altitude structure in ozone concentrations in a shoreline environment showing the highest ozone at altitudes from 20–100 m a.g.l. These first such measurements of low-altitude ozone via a UAS in the Great Lakes region revealed a very shallow layer of ozone-rich air lying above the surface.
