Mossbauer effect in the ion-implanted iron-carbon alloys

The concentration dependence of Mossbauer effect in four carbon ion-implanted iron absorbers, which contain carbon as the solute atoms, has been investigated over the range of concentration 0.05 through 1 atomic percent. The specimens were prepared by implanting carbon atoms on each reference iron foil with four different bombarding energies of 250 keV, 160 keV, 140 keV and 80 keV, respectively. Thus, the specimen contains a uniform dosage of carbon atoms which penetrated up to 3,000 A depth of the reference iron. In the measurement of Mossbauer spectra, the backscattering conversion electron counting geometry was used. Typical results of Mossbauer parameters of iron-carbon alloys show that the isomer shift, quadrupole shift, the effective hyperfine splitting of Fe-57, and the intensity ratio exhibit a large variation with the increase of carbon concentration in the environment of iron atoms.

Vibration analysis utilizing Mossbauer effect

Measuring instrument analyzes mechanical vibrations in transducers at amplitudes in the range of a few to 100 angstroms. This instrument utilizes the Mossbauer effect, the phenomenon of the recoil-free emission and resonant absorption of nuclear gamma rays in solids.

Mossbauer effect studies in iron containing nonmagnetic impurities

Mossbauer parameters of dilute quaternary (Fe-XYZ) alloys where X, Y, Z, are Al, Ge, and La, respectively were studied. A comparison between the computed and the observed values indicates that changes in effective hyperfine field, outer peak widths and the isomer shift predicted on the basis of binary alloys of the individual impurities are equal, within experimental errors, to those obtained in quaternary (Fe-XYZ) alloys. The effects of simultaneously present dilute impurities are shown to be additive, independent of their respective electronic configurations.

Mossbauer effect in dilute iron alloys

The effects of variable concentration, x, of Aluminum, Germanium, and Lanthanum atoms in Iron lattice on various Mossbauer parameters was studied. Dilute binary alloys of (Fe-Al), (Fe-Ge), (Fe-Al) containing up to x = 2 a/o of the dilute constituent were prepared in the form of ingots and rolled to a thickness of 0.001 in. Mossbauer spectra of these targets were then studied in transmission geometry to measure changes in the hyperfine field, peak widths isomer shifts as well as the ratio of the intensities of peaks (1,6) to the intensities of peaks (2,5). It was shown that the concept of effective hyperfine structure field in very dilute alloys provides a useful means of studying the effects of progressively increasing the solute concentration on host lattice properties.

Mossbauer effect and its applications in materials research

It is generally recognized that in any well behaved metal fatigue failure, the following sequence of events occurs. The application of stress causes the movement of defects already present in the specimen, besides producing new defects. These defects concentrate in the regions of stress concentration. This defect concentration, which precedes crack nucleation and its eventual growth, actually amounts to environmental changes for Mossbauer atoms located in these regions. Changes in the atomic composition of the Mossbauer absorber atom environment are sensed by examining changes in the sensitive parameters of the Mossbauer spectra. A preliminary study of changes in the isomer shift and line width of commercial nonmagnetic steel specimen is reported.

Studies of iron impurities in YxPr1-xBa2Cu3O7-delta

Pr is the only rare earth which, when substituted for Y in YBa2Cu3O7, significantly alters the superconducting transition temperature T(sub c) without changing the crystal structure. For YxPr1-xBa2Cu3O7-delta with delta approx. equal to 0, T(sub c) is reduced rapidly as x is increased, reaching zero for x about 0.5. For x above 0.5 the compound is antiferromagnetic with a Neel temperature that increases with increasing x, rising to above room temperature for x near 1. A similar behavior is observed when the oxygen deficit delta is increased from zero to 1 with x=0. For the case of Pr substitution, the drop in T(sub c) is believed due to magnetic interactions. For the case of varying delta with x=0, the drop can be attributed to a combination of magnetic interactions, band filling, and changes in crystal structure. To study these effects, the Mossbauer effect of 57 Fe atoms substituted for the Cu atoms has been observed as a function of delta, x, and temperature. The observed spectra are all well described by a two quadrupole-split pairs, a central singlet, and a six-line magnetic hyperfine field pattern. For several Pr compositions both delta and temperature were varied, and the results support the hypothesis that a magnetic interaction exists between the Fe in the Cu lattice and the substitutional Pr atoms.

Measurement of the gravitational redshift using a clock in an orbiting satellite

A hydrogen maser clock is proposed for enclosure in an orbiting satellite to measure the gravitational effect on time scales with high accuracy. This experiment is used to test the principle of equivalence for clocks in space. Extremely narrow linewidth of Fe-57 radiation and absorption due to Mossbauer effect over 75 ft vertical distance was used to confirm the prediction of the equivalence principle to 1 part in 100. The fractional frequency shift of a satellite-borne oscillator observed from earth is also given.
