Kerr, Faraday, and magnetoelectric effects in MnBi 2 Te 4 thin films

The topological magnetoelectric effect (TME) is a characteristic property of topological insulators. In this paper, we use a simplified coupled-Dirac-cone electronic structure model to theoretically evaluate the THz and far infrared Kerr and Faraday responses of thin films of MnBi 2 ⁢Te 4 with up to N = 10 septuple layers with the goal of clarifying the relationship between these convenient magnetooptical observables and the TME. Here we find that for even N, the linear Kerr and Faraday responses to an electric field vanish in the low-frequency limit, even though the magnetoelectric response is large and approximately quantized.

Magnetoelectric effect arising from a field-induced pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion in a rare-earth magnet

Magnetoelectric materials are attractive for several applications, including actuators, switches, and magnetic field sensors. Typical mechanisms for achieving a strong magnetoelectric coupling are rooted in transition metal magnetism. In sharp contrast, here we identify CsEr(MoO 4 ) 2 as a magnetoelectric material without magnetic transition metal ions, thus ensuring that the Er ions play a key role in achieving this interesting property. Our detailed study includes measurements of the structural, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of this material. Bulk characterization and neutron powder diffraction show no evidence for structural phase transitions down to 0.3 K and therefore CsEr(MoO 4 ) 2 maintains the room temperature P2/c space group over a wide temperature range without external magnetic field. These same measurements also identify collinear antiferromagnetic ordering of the Er 3+ moments below T N =0.87K. Complementary dielectric constant and pyroelectric current measurements reveal that a ferroelectric phase with a maximum polarization P~0.6 nC/cm 2 emerges when applying a modest external magnetic field, which indicates that this material has a strong magnetoelectric coupling. Finally, we argue that the magnetoelectric coupling in this system arises from a pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion induced by the magnetic field.

Selection rules and dynamic magnetoelectric effect of the spin waves in multiferroic Bi Fe O 3

Here, we report the magnetic-field dependence of the THz absorption and nonreciprocal directional dichroism spectra of BiFeO 3 measured on the three principal crystal cuts for fields applied along the three principal directions of each cut. From the systematic study of the light polarization dependence, we deduced the optical selection rules of the spin-wave excitations. Our THz data, combined with small-angle neutron scattering results showed that (i) an in-plane magnetic field rotates the q vectors of the cycloids perpendicular to the magnetic field and (ii) the selection rules are mostly determined by the orientation of the q vector with respect to the electromagnetic fields. We observed a magnetic field history-dependent change in the strength and the frequency of the spin-wave modes, which we attributed to the change of the orientation and the length of the cycloidal q vector, respectively. Finally, we compared our experimental data with the results of linear spin-wave theory that reproduces the magnetic-field dependence of the spin-wave frequencies and most of the selection rules, from which we identified the spin-polarization coupling terms relevant for the optical magnetoelectric effect.

Giant linear magnetoelectric effect at the morphotropic phase boundary of epitaxial Sr 0.5 Ba 0.5 MnO 3 films

First-principles calculations are conducted to compute linear magnetoelectric coupling coefficients in epitaxial (001) Sr 0.5 Ba 0.5 MnO 3 films. A large enhancement of different linear magnetoelectric elements is found in a strained-induced morphotropic phase boundary region. Such enhancement is demonstrated to originate from the behavior of the dielectric susceptibility, thanks to a simple phenomenological model that is presently shown to be relevant and accurate. Finally, this work can thus provide a promising approach towards designing highly desired single-phase multiferroic with a colossal magnetoelectric conversion.

Orbital gyrotropic magnetoelectric effect and its strain engineering in monolayer NbX 2

Electrical control of the orbital degrees of freedom is an important area of research in the emerging field of "orbitronics.'' Orbital gyrotropic magneto-electric effect (OGME) is the generation of an orbital magnetization in a nonmagnetic metal by an applied electric field. Here, we show that strain induces a large GME in the monolayer NbX 2 (X = S, Se) normal to the plane, primarily driven by the orbital moments of the Bloch bands as opposed to the conventional spin magnetization, without any need for spin-orbit coupling. The key physics is captured within an effective two-band valley-orbital model and it is shown to be driven by three key ingredients: the intrinsic valley orbital moment, broken $C_{3z}$ symmetry, and strain-induced Fermi surface changes. The effect can be furthermore switched by changing the strain condition, with potential for future device applications.

Magnetic structure and magnetoelectric effect in the centrosymmetric antiferromagnet Cu 2 ( MoO 4 ) ( SeO 3 )

Magnetic properties of Cu 2 ⁢(MoO 4 )⁢(SeO 3 ), an S = $\frac{1}{2}$ centrosymmetric antiferromagnet (AFM), were investigated using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, neutron diffraction, and magnetoelectric (ME) measurements. Here, the magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a broad peak at ~50 K, followed by a phase transition into AFM order at T N = 23.6⁢(1) K. Above T N , a fit to the Curie-Weiss law gives a Curie-Weiss temperature Θ CW = -68⁢(1) K, suggesting the dominant AFM coupling. Neutron powder diffraction reveals that the C⁢u 2+ spins are aligned AFM along the c axis with weak noncollinearity under the magnetic space group of P2$^{'}_{1}$/c. The ME response indicates that a nondiagonal component of a ME tensor is active, supporting the simultaneous spatial and time reversal symmetry breaking under P2$^{'}_{1}$/c.

Giant orbital magnetoelectric effect and current-induced magnetization switching in twisted bilayer graphene

Recently, quantum anomalous Hall effect with spontaneous ferromagnetism was observed in twisted bilayer graphenes (TBG) near 3/4 filling. Importantly, it was observed that an extremely small current can switch the direction of the magnetization. This offers the prospect of realizing low energy dissipation magnetic memories. However, the mechanism of the current-driven magnetization switching is poorly understood as the charge currents in graphenes are generally believed to be non-magnetic. In this work, we demonstrate that in TBG, the twisting and substrate induced symmetry breaking allow an out of plane orbital magnetization to be generated by a charge current. Moreover, the large Berry curvatures of the flat bands give the Bloch electrons large orbital magnetic moments so that a small current can generate a large orbital magnetization. We further demonstrate how the charge current can switch the magnetization of the ferromagnetic TBG near 3/4 filling as observed in the experiments.

Ultrafast Light-Induced Magnetoelectric Effect in van der Waals Magnetic Semiconductor Heterostructures

Atomic-scale heterostructures of van der Waals (vdW) magnets and semiconductors provide a unique environment for exploring magnetic dynamics. In contrast to typical photothermal excitation of precessional magnetization dynamics by a pump laser pulse, we find that ultrafast optical excitation of a WS2/CrGeTe3 (CGT) bilayer produces an opposite sign of magnetic torque compared to an isolated CGT film. Experimental observations by time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) and theoretical analysis by density functional theory (DFT) and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) simulations support a mechanism in which charge transfer of photoexcited carriers across the interface alters the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which in turn generates a torque on the magnetic layer to trigger precessional magnetization dynamics. These results provide new avenues for ultrafast manipulation of magnetization in vdW heterostructures with type-II band alignments. Lastly, we show that optically-generated spin currents from WS2 into CGT can also trigger precessional dynamics via angular momentum transfer.

Magnetocapacitance effect and magnetoelectric coupling in type-II multiferroic HoFeWO 6

We have investigated the multiferroicity and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in HoFeWO 6 . With a noncentrosymmetric polar structure (space group Pna2 1 ) at room temperature, this compound shows an onset of electric polarization with an antiferromagnetic ordering at the Néel temperature (T N ) of 17.8 K. The magnetic properties of the polycrystalline samples were studied by DC and AC magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The metamagnetic behavior at low temperatures was found to be directly related to the dielectric properties of the compound. In particular, field-dependent measurements of capacitance show a magnetocapacitance (MC) effect with double-hysteresis loop behavior in direct correspondence with the magnetization. Our x-ray diffraction results show the Pna2 1 structure down to 8 K and suggest the absence of a structural phase transition across T N . Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe L 2,3 and Ho M 4,5 edges revealed the oxidation state of Fe and Ho cations to be 3+. Fe L 2,3 XMCD further shows that Fe 3+ cations are antiferromagnetically ordered in a noncollinear fashion with spins arranged 90° with respect to each other. Our findings show that HoFeWO 6 is a type-II multiferroic exhibiting a MC effect. Furthermore, the observed MC effect and the change in polarization by the magnetic field, as well as their direct correspondence with magnetization, further support the strong ME coupling in this compound.

Probing the effect of magnetic field on charge order in the quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulator κ - (ET) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 Cl

Molecular-based quasi-two-dimensional charge-ordered Mott insulators can possess both spin S = 1/2 and an electric dipole degree of freedom residing on each (BEDT - TTF) 2 lattice site. There exists a theoretical proposal for a magnetoelectric effect in such a material, which can manifest itself as a sensitivity of charge distribution on (BEDT - TTF) 2 dimers to the magnetic field. Here in this work, we used Raman scattering spectroscopy in the magnetic field up to 31 T applied perpendicular to the two-dimensional triangular lattice planes to probe a magnetoelectric effect in $\kappa$ - (ET) 2 H g (SCN) 2 Cl. This is a model compound, which shows charge order and antiferromagnetic correlations at temperatures below 30 K. We discuss possible reasons for the absence of an observable magnetoelectric effect in the probed temperature and magnetic field ranges.

Recent progress in MnBi2 n Te3 n +1 intrinsic magnetic topological insulators: crystal growth, magnetism and chemical disorder

ABSTRACT The search for magnetic topological materials has been at the forefront of condensed matter research for their potential to host exotic states such as axion insulators, magnetic Weyl semimetals, Chern insulators, etc. To date, the MnBi2nTe3n+1 family is the only group of materials showcasing van der Waals-layered structures, intrinsic magnetism and non-trivial band topology without trivial bands at the Fermi level. The interplay between magnetism and band topology in this family has led to the proposal of various topological phenomena, including the quantum anomalous Hall effect, quantum spin Hall effect and quantum magnetoelectric effect. Among these, the quantum anomalous Hall effect has been experimentally observed at record-high temperatures, highlighting the unprecedented potential of this family of materials in fundamental science and technological innovation. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the research progress in this intrinsic magnetic topological insulator family, with a focus on single-crystal growth, characterization of chemical disorder, manipulation of magnetism through chemical substitution and external pressure, and important questions that remain to be conclusively answered.

Realization of an intrinsic ferromagnetic topological state in MnBi 8 Te 13

Novel magnetic topological materials pave the way for studying the interplay between band topology and magnetism. However, an intrinsically ferromagnetic topological material with only topological bands at the charge neutrality energy has so far remained elusive. Using rational design, we synthesized MnBi 8 Te 13 , a natural heterostructure with [MnBi 2 Te 4 ] and [Bi 2 Te 3 ] layers. Thermodynamic, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements show that despite the adjacent [MnBi 2 Te 4 ] being 44.1 Å apart, MnBi 8 Te 13 manifests long-range ferromagnetism below 10.5 K with strong coupling between magnetism and charge carriers. First-principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal it is an axion insulator with sizable surface hybridization gaps. Our calculations further demonstrate the hybridization gap persists in the two-dimensional limit with a nontrivial Chern number. Therefore, as an intrinsic ferromagnetic axion insulator with clean low-energy band structures, MnBi 8 Te 13 serves as an ideal system to investigate rich emergent phenomena, including the quantized anomalous Hall effect and quantized magnetoelectric effect.

Quantum field theory of topological spin dynamics

Here, we develop a field theory of quantum magnets and magnetic (semi)metals, which is suitable for the analysis of their universal and topological properties. The systems of interest include collinear, coplanar, and general noncoplanar magnets. At the basic level, we describe the dynamics of magnetic moments using smooth vector fields in the continuum limit. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is captured by a non-Abelian vector gauge field, and chiral spin couplings related to topological defects appear as higher-rank antisymmetric tensor gauge fields. We distinguish type-I and type-II magnets by their equilibrium response to the non-Abelian gauge flux, and characterize the resulting lattices of skyrmions and hedgehogs, the spectra of spin waves, and the chiral response to external perturbations. The general spin-orbit coupling of electrons is similarly described by non-Abelian gauge fields, including higher-rank tensors related to the electronic Berry flux. Itinerant electrons and local moments exchange their gauge fluxes through Kondo and Hund interactions. Hence, by utilizing gauge fields, this theory provides a unifying physical picture of “intrinsic” and “topological” anomalous Hall effects, spin-Hall effects, and other correlations between the topological properties of electrons and moments. We predict “topological” magnetoelectric effect in materials prone to hosting hedgehogs. Links to experiments and model calculations are provided by deriving the couplings and gauge fields from generic microscopic models, including the Hubbard model with spin-orbit interactions. Much of the formal analysis is generalized to d spatial dimensions in order to access the $π_{d–1}(S^{d–1})$ homotopy classification of the magnetic hedgehog topological defects, and establish the possibility of novel quantum spin liquids that exhibit a fractional magnetoelectric effect. However, we emphasize the form of all results in the physically relevant $\textit{d}$ = 3 dimensions, and discuss a few applications to topological magnetic conductors like Mn 3 Sn and Pr 2 Ir 2 O 7 .

Giant magnetostriction and nonsaturating electric polarization up to 60 T in the polar magnet $\mathrm{CaBaCo_4O_7}$

Giant magnetostriction in insulating magnetic materials is highly required for applications but is rarely observed. Here we show that giant magnetostriction (> 1500 ppm) can be achieved in an insulating transition metal oxide CaBaCo 4 O 7 where the ferrimagnetic ordering at T c ~ 62K is associated with a huge change in the lattice. Moreover, because this material is pyroelectric with a nonswitchable electric polarization (P), the giant magnetostriction results in a pronounced magnetoelectric effect—a huge change of electric polarization (ΔP ~ 1.6μC/cm 2 ) in response to the applied magnetic field up to 60 T. Geometric frustration as well as the orbital instability of Co 2+ /Co 3+ ions is believed to play a crucial role in the giant magnetostriction. Here our study provides insights on how to achieve both giant magnetostriction and pronounced magnetoelectric effect in insulating transition metal oxides.

Axion insulator state in ferromagnetically ordered CrI 3 /Bi 2 Se 3 /MnBi 2 Se 4 heterostructures

Ferromagnetic (FM) axion insulators may greatly simplify experimental explorations of the topological magnetoelectric effect, as the FM ordering can be stable in a broad range of magnetic field. Through density functional theory calculations and four-band model studies, we find that two-dimensional van der Waals FM CrI 3 and MnBi 2 Se 4 overlayers induce opposite-sign exchange fields in the topological surface states of Bi 2 Se 3 film when they are ferromagnetically ordered. As a consequence, the CrI 3 /Bi 2 Se 3 /MnBi 2 Se 4 heterostructure is a robust FM axion insulator, according to surface-resolved Berry curvature calculations. Our work opens up opportunities for the design of materials with the topological magnetoelectric effect.

High-resolution neutron diffraction determination of noncollinear antiferromagnetic order in the honeycomb magnetoelectric Fe 4 ⁢Nb 2⁢ O 9

Magnetoelectric systems offer potential for device applications exploiting coupled states between electric and magnetic properties. Among magnetoelectric materials, Fe 4 ⁢Nb 2 ⁢O 9 has attracted special attention because of its pronounced dielectric signal at high magnetic transition temperatures. However, the magnetic ground state, which is essential information for understanding its unusual magnetoelectricity, remains unclarified. Here, we report a noncollinear magnetic ground state of Fe 4 ⁢Nb 2 ⁢O 9 . To examine the magnetoelectric effect associated with sequential magnetic and structural transitions upon cooling, we conducted combined x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, dielectric constant, and magnetodielectric experiments. Powder neutron diffraction experiments revealed a series of magnetic Bragg peaks and clear splitting of peaks via structural transition. Magnetic Rietveld refinements, combined with group theory analysis, determined a noncollinear antiferromagnetic structure including a significant 𝑐-axis moment component at 1.5 K. This article provides insights into the understanding of its magnetoelectric properties.
