Coherent Spin Pumping in a Strongly Coupled Magnon-Magnon Hybrid System

Here, we experimentally identify coherent spin pumping in the magnon-magnon hybrid modes of yttrium iron garnet/permalloy (YIG/Py) bilayers. By reducing the YIG and Py thicknesses, the strong interfacial exchange coupling leads to large avoided crossings between the uniform mode of Py and the spin wave modes of YIG enabling accurate determination of modification of the linewidths due to the dampinglike torque. We identify additional linewidth suppression and enhancement for the in-phase and out-of-phase hybrid modes, respectively, which can be interpreted as concerted dampinglike torque from spin pumping. Furthermore, varying the Py thickness shows that both the fieldlike and dampinglike couplings vary like 1/$\sqrt{𝑡_{Py}}$, verifying the prediction by the coupled Landau-Lifshitz equations.

Perspective: Magnon-magnon coupling in hybrid magnonics

The internal coupling of magnetic excitations (magnons) with themselves has created a new research sub-field in hybrid magnonics, i.e., magnon-magnon coupling, which focuses on materials discovery and engineering for probing and controlling magnons in a coherent manner. This is enabled by, one, the abundant mechanisms of introducing magnetic interactions, with examples of exchange coupling, dipolar coupling, Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida (RKKY) coupling, and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) coupling, and two, the vast knowledge of how to control magnon band structure, including field and wavelength dependences of frequencies, for determining the degeneracy of magnon modes with different symmetries. In particular, we discuss how magnon-magnon coupling is implemented in various materials systems, with examples of magnetic bilayers, synthetic antiferromagnets, nanomagnetic arrays, layered van der Waals magnets, and (DMI spin-orbit torque materials) in magnetic multilayers. Here, we then introduce new concept of applications for these hybrid magnonic materials systems, with examples of frequency up/down conversion and magnon-exciton coupling, and discuss what properties are desired for achieving those applications.

Observation of thermally activated coherent magnon-magnon coupling in a magnonic hybrid system

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate coherent magnon-magnon coupling by thermal spin excitations in yttrium iron garnet/permalloy (YIG/Py) hybrid structures using microfocused Brillouin light scattering—an optical technique that enables the detection of zero-wave-vector and higher-order wave-vector spin waves in a broad frequency range. The thermally activated magnons in the bilayer lead to a hybrid excitation between magnon modes in the conductive Py layer with a wide wave-vector range and the first perpendicular standing magnon modes in the insulating YIG layer, facilitated by strong interfacial exchange coupling. To further investigate this coupling, we compare the thermal magnon spectra with the results obtained from electrical excitation and detection methods, which primarily detect the uniform Py mode. The realization of coherent coupling between incoherent (thermal) magnons is important for advancing energy-efficient magnonic devices, particularly in classical as well as quantum spin-wave computing technologies.

Magnon-Magnon Interaction Induced by Dynamic Coupling in a Hybrid Magnonic Crystal

We report a combined experimental and numerical investigation of spin-wave dynamics in a hybrid magnonic crystal consisting of a CoFeB artificial spin ice (ASI) of stadium-shaped nanoelements patterned atop a continuous NiFe film separated by a 5 nm Al 2 O 3 spacer. Using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy, we probe the frequency dependence of thermal spin waves as functions of applied magnetic field and wavevector, revealing the decisive role of interlayer dipolar coupling in the magnetization dynamics. Micromagnetic simulations complement the experiments, showing a strong interplay between ASI edge modes and backward volume modes in the NiFe film. The contrast in saturation magnetization between CoFeB and NiFe enhances this coupling, leading to a pronounced hybridization manifested as a triplet of peaks in the BLS spectra predicted by simulations and observed experimentally. This magnon−magnon coupling persists over a wide magnetic field range, shaping both the spin-wave dispersion at fixed fields and the full frequency-field response throughout the magnetic hysteresis loop. Our findings establish how ASI geometry can selectively enhance specific spin-wave wavelengths in the underlying film, thereby boosting their amplitude and identifying them as preferential channels for spin wave transmission and manipulation.

Role of Magnon-Magnon Scattering in Magnon Polaron Spin Seebeck Effect

The spin Seebeck effect (SSE) signal of magnon polarons in bulk-Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG)/Pt heterostructures is found to drastically change as a function of temperature. It appears as a dip in the total SSE signal at low temperatures, but as the temperature increases, the dip gradually decreases before turning to a peak. We attribute the observed dip-to-peak transition to the rapid rise of the four-magnon scattering rate. Our analysis provides important insights into the microscopic origin of the hybridized excitations and the overall temperature dependence of the SSE anomalies.

Single-shot electrical detection of short-wavelength magnon pulse transmission in a magnonic thin-film waveguide

Abstract The advance of magnon spintronics requires understanding of time-domain magnon pulse transmission in order to develop high-speed information processing protocols. In this work, we demonstrate single-shot electrical detection of narrow-band magnon pulse transmission in a yttrium iron garnet thin-film delay line. The high signal-to-background ratio of magnon transmission band allows us to directly probe the magnon transmission electrically using a fast oscilloscope and to study its spectral evolution using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the time-domain transmitted signal. At elevated input power, we show a magnon transmission reduction and a spectral distortion, which can be understood by the nonlinear magnon excitation in the transmission band defined by the antenna geometry. In addition, we also find that the higher- (lower-) frequency magnon spectral component exhibits a lower (higher) magnon group velocity, showing a dispersion agreeing with the Damon-Eshbach dependence. Our results provide important guidance of magnon pulse engineering for their applications in spin wave computing and coherent magnon information processing.

Magnon-magnon coupling in an all-oxide insulator garnet Y 3 ⁢Fe 5 ⁢O 12 /Tm 3 ⁢Fe 5⁢ O 12 heterostructure

Hybrid magnonic systems have recently attracted significant attention due to their intriguing physics and potential applications in coherent information processing. In this regard, we have investigated magnon-magnon coupling in the all-oxide insulator garnet Y 3⁢ Fe 5⁢ O 12 (YIG)/Tm 3 ⁢Fe 5 ⁢O 12 (TmIG) heterostructure. The presence of an avoided mode crossing region between the ferromagnetic resonance modes of YIG and TmIG indicates interfacial exchange coupling. This all-insulator system enables interfacial coupling via magnon-magnon interactions. The mode crossing occurs at 𝑓 𝑐 = 6.88 GHz, corresponding to the minimal resonance separation between the two hybrid modes. The coupling strength is determined to be 78 MHz (or 2.8 mT), providing clear evidence of magnon-magnon coupling between the two Kittel modes in the YIG/TmIG insulator system at 200 K. As a result, these findings pave the way for engineering magnonic band structures, tunable coherent magnonic interactions, and nonreciprocal spin transport, which are crucial for advancing ultralow-power magnonic devices.

On-demand magnon resonance isolation in cavity magnonics

Cavity magnonics is a promising field focusing on the interaction between spin waves (magnons) and other types of signal. In cavity magnonics, isolation of magnons from the cavity to allow signal storage and processing fully in the magnonic domain is highly desired, but its realization is often hindered by the lack of necessary tunability of the interaction. This work shows that by using the collective mode of two yttrium iron garnet spheres and applying Floquet engineering, magnonic signals can be switched on demand to a magnon dark mode that is protected from the environment, enabling a variety of manipulation over the magnon dynamics. Furthermore, our demonstration can be scaled up to systems with an array of magnonic resonators, paving the way for large-scale programmable hybrid magnonic circuits.

Reconfigurable spin current transmission and magnon–magnon coupling in hybrid ferrimagnetic insulators

Coherent spin waves possess immense potential in wave-based information computation, storage, and transmission with high fidelity and ultra-low energy consumption. However, despite their seminal importance for magnonic devices, there is a paucity of both structural prototypes and theoretical frameworks that regulate the spin current transmission and magnon hybridization mediated by coherent spin waves. Here, we demonstrate reconfigurable coherent spin current transmission, as well as magnon–magnon coupling, in a hybrid ferrimagnetic heterostructure comprising epitaxial Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 and Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 insulators. By adjusting the compensated moment in Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 , magnon–magnon coupling was achieved and engineered with pronounced anticrossings between two Kittel modes, accompanied by divergent dissipative coupling approaching the magnetic compensation temperature of Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 (T M,GdIG ), which were modeled by coherent spin pumping. Remarkably, we further identified, both experimentally and theoretically, a drastic variation in the coherent spin wave-mediated spin current across T M,GdIG , which manifested as a strong dependence on the relative alignment of magnetic moments. Our findings provide significant fundamental insight into the reconfiguration of coherent spin waves and offer a new route towards constructing artificial magnonic architectures.

Single-shot magnon interference in a magnon-superconducting-resonator hybrid circuit

Magnon interference is a hallmark of coherent magnon interactions. In this work, we demonstrate single-shot magnon interference using up to four magnon pulses in two remotely coupled yttrium iron garnet spheres mediated by a coplanar superconducting resonator. By exciting one YIG sphere with injected microwave pulses, we achieve coherent energy exchange between the two spheres, facilitating their interference processes, including Rabi-like oscillation with a single pulse, constructive and destructive interference with two pulses, and interference peak sharpening with up to four pulses—analogous to diffraction grating in optical interference. The resulting interference patterns can be precisely controlled by changing the frequency detuning and time delay of the magnon pulses. The demonstration of time-domain coherent control of remote magnon interference opens new pathways for advancing coherent information processing through multi-operation, circuit-integrated hybrid magnonic networks.

Ultrastrong magnon-magnon coupling and chiral spin-texture control in a dipolar 3D multilayered artificial spin-vortex ice

Strongly-interacting nanomagnetic arrays are ideal systems for exploring reconfigurable magnonics. They provide huge microstate spaces and integrated solutions for storage and neuromorphic computing alongside GHz functionality. These systems may be broadly assessed by their range of reliably accessible states and the strength of magnon coupling phenomena and nonlinearities. Increasingly, nanomagnetic systems are expanding into three-dimensional architectures. This has enhanced the range of available magnetic microstates and functional behaviours, but engineering control over 3D states and dynamics remains challenging. Here, we introduce a 3D magnonic metamaterial composed from multilayered artificial spin ice nanoarrays. Comprising two magnetic layers separated by a non-magnetic spacer, each nanoisland may assume four macrospin or vortex states per magnetic layer. This creates a system with a rich 16 N microstate space and intense static and dynamic dipolar magnetic coupling. The system exhibits a broad range of emergent phenomena driven by the strong inter-layer dipolar interaction, including ultrastrong magnon-magnon coupling with normalised coupling rates of $\frac{Δf}{v}$ = 0.57, GHz mode shifts in zero applied field and chirality-control of magnetic vortex microstates with corresponding magnonic spectra.

Tunable Magnetically Induced Transparency Spectra in Magnon-Magnon Coupled Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 / Permalloy Bilayers

Hybrid magnonic systems host a variety of characteristic phenomena such as the magnetically induced transparency (MIT) and Purcell effect, which are considered useful for future coherent quantuminformation processing. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a tunable MIT effect in the Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG)/Permalloy(Py) magnon-magnon coupled system via changing the magnetic field orientations. By probing the magneto-optic effects of Py and YIG thin films, we identify clear features of MIT spectra induced by the mode hybridization between the uniform mode of Py and the perpendicular standing spin-wave modes of YIG. By changing the external magnetic field orientations, we observe a tunable coupling strength between the YIG's spin-wave modes and the Py's uniform mode, upon the application of an out-of-plane magnetic field. This observation is theoretically interpreted by a geometrical consideration of the Py and YIG magnetization under the oblique magnetic field even at a constant interfacial exchange coupling. Finally, our findings show high promise for investigating tunable coherent phenomena with hybrid magnonic platforms.

In this work, we explore time-resolved dynamics of non-equilibrium magnons in Rb2MnF4, a model two-dimensional square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet using a novel laser-neutron pump-probe technique. This technique uses a nanosecond pulsed laser to periodically excite magnons to out-of-equilibrium states and then probe the resulting dynamics using INS.

On the magnon interaction in haematite. I - Magnon energy of optical mode.

The effect of magnon interaction on the magnon energies of haematite was studied by the use of a recently developed random phase approximation. In this study, the spin Hamiltonian and the magnon energy were written in a power series of (1/S), where S denotes the magnitude of spin. It is known that the expression of magnon energy is rigorous up to the second term of this series. It is found that the optic mode energy is small if the free optic mode energy is small, which is contrary to Herbert's (1969) conclusion. This direct proportionality between the optic mode energy and the free optic mode energy was not confirmed in the higher order terms of 1/S.

Probing magnon–magnon coupling in exchange coupled Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 /Permalloy bilayers with magneto-optical effects

We demonstrate the magnetically-induced transparency (MIT) effect in Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG)/Permalloy (Py) coupled bilayers. The measurement is achieved via a heterodyne detection of the coupled magnetization dynamics using a single wavelength that probes the magneto-optical Kerr and Faraday effects of Py and YIG, respectively. Clear features of the MIT effect are evident from the deeply modulated ferromagnetic resonance of Py due to the perpendicular-standing-spin-wave of YIG. We develop a phenomenological model that nicely reproduces the experimental results including the induced amplitude and phase evolution caused by the magnon–magnon coupling. Our work offers a new route towards studying phase-resolved spin dynamics and hybrid magnonic systems

Nanomagnonic Cavities for Strong Spin-Magnon Coupling and Magnon-Mediated Spin-Spin Interactions

We present a theoretical approach to use ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic nanoparticles as microwave nanomagnonic cavities to concentrate microwave magnetic fields into deeply subwavelength volumes ~ 10 –13 mm 3 . In this work, we show that the field in such nanocavities can efficiently couple to isolated spin emitters (spin qubits) positioned close to the nanoparticle surface reaching the single magnon-spin strong-coupling regime and mediate efficient long-range quantum state transfers between isolated spin emitters. Nanomagnonic cavities thus pave the way toward magnon-based quantum networks and magnon-mediated quantum gates.

Evidence of Magnon-Mediated Orbital Magnetism in a Quasi-2D Topological Magnon Insulator

Here, we explore spin dynamics in Cu(1,3-bdc), a quasi-2D topological magnon insulator. The results show that the thermal evolution of the Landé $\textit{g}$ factor ($\textit{g}$) is anisotropic: $g_{\text{in-plane}}$ decreases while $g_{\text{out-of-plane}}$ increases with increasing temperature $\textit{T}$. Moreover, the anisotropy of the $\textit{g}$ factor (Δ$\textit{g}$) and the anisotropy of saturation magnetization ($ΔM_s$) are correlated below 4 K, but they diverge above 4 K. We show that the electronic orbital moment contributes to the g anisotropy at lower $\textit{T}$, while the topological orbital moment induced by thermally excited spin chirality dictates the g anisotropy at higher $\textit{T}$. Our work suggests an interplay among topology, spin chirality, and orbital magnetism in Cu(1,3-bdc).
