Photodetector Development for the Wheel Abrasion Experiment on the Sojourner Microrover of the Mars Pathfinder Mission

On-board the Mars Pathfinder spacecraft, launched in December of 1996, is a small roving vehicle named Sojourner. On Sojourner is an experiment to determine the abrasive characteristics of the Martian surface, called the Wheel Abrasion Experiment (WAE). The experiment works as follows: one of the wheels of the rover has a strip of black anodized aluminum bonded to the tread. The aluminum strip has thin coatings of aluminum, nickel and platinum deposited in patches. There are five (5) patches or samples of each metal, and the patches range in thickness from 200 A to 1000 A. The different metals were chosen for their differing hardness and their environmental stability. As the wheel is spun in the Martian soil, the thin patches of metal are abraded away, exposing the black anodization. The abrasion is monitored by measuring the amount of light reflected off of the samples. A photodetector was developed for this purpose, and that is the subject of this paper.

Summary of Results from the Risk Management Program for the Mars Microrover Flight Experiment

On 4 July 1997, the Mars Pathfinder landed on the surface of Mars carrying the first planetary rover, known as the Sojourner. Formally known as the Microrover Flight Experiment (MFEX), the Sojourner was a low cost, high-risk technology demonstration, in which new risk management techniques were tried. This paper summarizes the activities and results of the effort to conduct a low-cost, yet meaningful risk management program for the MFEX. The specific activities focused on cost, performance, schedule, and operations risks. Just as the systems engineering process was iterative and produced successive refinements of requirements, designs, etc., so was the risk management process. Qualitative risk assessments were performed first to gain some insights for refining the microrover design and operations concept. These then evolved into more quantitative analyses. Risk management lessons from the manager's perspective is presented for other low-cost, high-risk space missions.

Back to Mars: The Mars Pathfinder Mission

Mars Pathfinder successfully landed on the surface of Mars on July 4, 1997, and ushered in a new era in Mars exploration. This era will feature numberous low cost missions which will perform important science investigations and engage the world's population in the excitement of planetary exploration.

Autonomous Navigation and the Sojourner Microrover

The Mars exploration program has as an overarching theme the search for and understanding of life, climate and resources on Mars. The ability to move about the surface of Mars is key to making measurements and the gathering of the data which address this theme.

Mars Pathfinder Microrover: A Small, Low-Cost, Low-Power Spacecraft

This paper provides an overview of the design of the Mars Pathfinder Microrover with an emphasis on how its integrated design enables it to perform all of the functions normally associated with entire spacecraft. The impact that mass, volume, and power constraints have had upon the design will also be discussed.
