Material handling systems for the fluidized-bed combustion boiler at Rivesville, West Virginia

The 300,000 lbs/hr steam capacity multicell fluidized-bed boiler (MFB) utilizes complex material handling systems. The material handling systems can be divided into the following areas: (1) coal preparation; transfer and delivery, (2) limestone handling system, (3) fly-ash removal and (4) bed material handling system. Each of the above systems are described in detail and some of the potential problem areas are discussed. A major potential problem that exists is the coal drying system. The coal dryer is designed to use 600 F preheated combustion air as drying medium and the dryer effluent is designed to enter a hot electrostatic precipitator (730 F) after passage through a cyclone. Other problem areas to be discussed include the steam generator coal and limestone feed system which may have operating difficulties with wet coal and/or coal fines.

Radial Internal Material Handling System (RIMS) for Circular Habitat Volumes

A Radial Internal Material Handling System (RIMS) has been developed to service a circular floor area in variable gravity. On planetary surfaces, pressurized human habitable volumes will require a means to carry heavy equipment between various locations within the volume of the habitat, regardless of the partial gravity (Earth, moon, Mars, etc). On the NASA Habitat Demonstration Unit (HDU), a vertical cylindrical volume, it was determined that a variety of heavy items would need to be carried back and forth from deployed locations to the General Maintenance Work Station (GMWS) when in need of repair, and other equipment may need to be carried inside for repairs, such as rover parts and other external equipment. The vertical cylindrical volume of the HDU lent itself to a circular overhead track and hoist system that allows lifting of heavy objects from anywhere in the habitat to any other point in the habitat interior. In addition, the system is able to hand off lifted items to other material handling systems through the side hatches, such as through an airlock. This paper describes the RIMS system which is scalable for application in a variety of circular habitat volumes.

Paper or Plastic? Multiscale Material Handling Properties of Two Model Municipal Solid Waste Streams

Purpose: Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is a potentially valuable sustainable feedstock for fuel and chemical production due to its carbon-rich content and low cost. This study aims to assess the material handling properties of paperand plastic-rich MSW feedstocks to mitigate equipment failure and processing downtime. Methods: The material handling properties of crumbled MSW feedstocks were measured using apowder rheometer with mass flow hopper calculations to assess handling performance. Inverse gas chromatography was use to measure the surface energy differences between feedstocks. Electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy was used to evaluate microscale features that may contribute to material handling differences. Results: Plastic and paper rich feedstocks crumbled to a nominal 2 mm particle size were observed to have similar flow and handling characteristics with reasonable hopper outlets. 2 mm plastic rich crumbles, with their higher bulk density, exhibited superior flow performance. By contrast, 4 mm material required significantly larger hopper outlets, indicating poor flowability. Paper rich and 4 mm plastic rich samples displayed broad particle size distributions, which contributed to particle interlocking, jamming, and other flow issues. Electron microscopy revealed that plastic rich samples were significantly smoother, enhancing their flowability compared to the rougher, paper rich materials. Conclusions: This study establishes critical material handling baselines for processing MSW as a viable feedstock for fuel and chemical production. The findings highlight the importance of optimizing particle size and feedstock composition to improve flowability and handling performance.

Toxic and reactive material handling on Spacelab J and USML-1

Spacelab J and USML-1 provide prime examples of materials which are toxic at ambient conditions or toxic during the processing stages. The experimentation requirements are outlined in relation to toxicity and reactive materials handling. Triple containment is the preferred method for prevention of toxic material release in habitable areas for catastrophic hazards. The containments must be adequate for the intended use and environment. When operations preclude triple containment, innovative methods should be explored.

Robotic Materials Handling in Space: Mechanical Design of the Robot Operated Materials Processing System HitchHiker Experiment

The Goddard Space Flight Center has developed the Robot Operated Materials Processing System (ROMPS) that flew aboard STS-64 in September, 1994. The ROMPS robot transported pallets containing wafers of different materials from their storage racks to a furnace for thermal processing. A system of tapered guides and compliant springs was designed to deal with the potential misalignments. The robot and all the sample pallets were locked down for launch and landing. The design of the passive lockdown system, and the interplay between it and the alignment system are presented.

Radial Internal Material Handling System (RIMS) for Circular Habitat Volumes

On planetary surfaces, pressurized human habitable volumes will require a means to carry equipment around within the volume of the habitat, regardless of the partial gravity (Earth, Moon, Mars, etc.). In addition, the system is able to hand-off lifted items to other material handling systems through the side hatches, such as through an airlock. The overhead system consists of two concentric circle tracks that have a movable beam between them. The beam has a hoist carriage that can move back and forth on the beam. Therefore, the entire system acts like a bridge crane curved around to meet itself in a circle. The novelty of the system is in its configuration, and how it interfaces with the volume of the HDU habitat. Similar to how a bridge crane allows coverage for an entire rectangular volume, the RIMS system covers a circular volume. The RIMS system is the first generation of what may be applied to future planetary surface vertical cylinder habitats on the Moon or on Mars.

Titanium Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing Inert Enclosure and Material Handling Safety Considerations

Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) via metal inert gas (MIG)/gas metal arc welding (GMAW) is a viable option for fabrication of large-scale titanium parts; however, it introduces new safety hazards associated with both the material and the additional system hardware required for the process. Localized gas shielding of the weld arc via standard GMAW torch is inadequate for titanium due to its affinity for oxygen; thereby requiring the use of an inert enclosure to protect the weld from entraining oxygen. The use of the inert enclosure presents potential safety hazards such as operator asphyxiation and brings up discussion of confined space considerations. In addition, the titanium welding process creates pyrophoric titanium soot residue around the deposit, which can undergo deflagration during part cleaning and part removal. This paper provides an overview of the titanium WAAM process along with safety considerations for the design and operation of the inert enclosure as well as functional solutions for the safe handling of the titanium soot by-product.

Efficient Silicon Carbide (SiC) Fiber Manufacture: Continuous Processing of Novel Precursors via Modified Material Handling

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) together with The Nonwovens Institute (NWI) and Harper International have executed on a development project to improve the production efficiency and reduce the production cost of silicon carbide (SiC) fiber – a critical material that advances US energy security and aerospace leadership. In the first budget period (BP1), the modified tow throughput (MTT) apparatus was developed, enabling fiber spinning in the form of loose coils rather than tightly packed spools (Figure 1) for batch processing of SiC fiber. This coil-based approach was proven to be capable of uniform fiber crosslinking and ceramic conversion, as well as demonstrating key process efficiencies while meeting the program fiber property targets.

Development of Automated Material Handling System with Alternate Gripper Designs for the Purpose of Increased Performance & Worker Safety

Savannah River National Laboratory’s (SRNL) Surplus Plutonium Disposition (SPD) Program leads the development and transition of automated unit operations for the processing of Plutonium oxide. A mixing can is opened, filled with material, mixed, set inside of a die can, and finally punched into compressed material. Replication of the process is constructed in A-area, where the mixing can weighs 1.6 kg (3.5 lbs.) and the compressed material weighs 4 kg (8.8 lbs.). Due to the constant process of Plutonium disposition, the fatigue on workers and worker dose accumulates quickly over time. SPD aims to automate this process by using a robotic arm to replace the hands-on worker. Automation will: Reduce worker radiation dose; Increase process throughout; Reduce costs for the disposition of Plutonium oxide.
