Fourier-based methods for removing mesh anomalies from angle resolved photoemission spectra

Recent improvements to spatial resolution in angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) have made it common to perform measurements with a very brief dwell time, for the purpose of mapping the spectral function over large surface regions. However, rapid measurement modalities can suffer a grid-like intensity modulation due to a wire mesh that is typically placed in front of the ARPES detector to block stray electrons. Here, we explore Fourier-based methods that can effectively remove this artifact, and improve the quality of ARPES images obtained in rapid scanning modes. In conclusion, an open source software package is provided containing implementations of demonstrated algorithms.

AXAF VETA-I mirror encircled energy measurements and data reduction

The AXAF VETA-I mirror encircled energy was measured with a series of apertures and two flow gas proportional counters at five X-ray energies ranging from 0.28 to 2.3 keV. The proportional counter has a thin plastic window with an opaque wire mesh supporting grid. Depending on the counter position, this mesh can cause the X-ray transmission to vary as much as +/-9 percent, which directly translates into an error in the encircled energy. In order to correct this wire mesh effect, window scan measurements were made, in which the counter was scanned in both horizontal (Y) and vertical (Z) directions with the aperture fixed. Post VETA measurement of the VXDS setup were made to determine the exact geometry and position of the mesh grid. Computer models of the window mesh were developed to simulate the X-ray transmission based on this measurement. The window scan data were fitted to such mesh models and corrections were made. After this study, the mesh effect was well understood and the final results of the encircled energy were obtained with an uncertainty of less than 0.8 percent.

Design concepts for large antenna reflectors

A type of antenna reflector was studied in which a stiff structure is constructed to hold a membrane like reflector mesh in the correct position. An important basic restriction is that the mesh be controlled only by the structure and that no additional local shaping be employed. Furthermore, attention is confined to structures in which no adjustments would be made on assembly. Primary attention is given to the tetrahedral truss configuration because of its outstanding stiffness and dimensional stability.

On the anomaly of velocity-pressure decoupling in collocated mesh solutions

The use of various pressure correction algorithms originally developed for fully staggered meshes can yield a velocity-pressure decoupled solution for collocated meshes. The mechanism that causes velocity-pressure decoupling is identified. It is shown that the use of a partial differential equation for the incremental pressure eliminates such a mechanism and yields a velocity-pressure coupled solution. Example flows considered are a three dimensional lid-driven cavity flow and a laminar flow through a 90 deg bend square duct. Numerical results obtained using the collocated mesh are in good agreement with the measured data and other numerical results.

Full Multigrid Flow Solver

FMG3D (full multigrid 3 dimensions) is a pilot computer program that solves equations of fluid flow using a finite difference representation on a structured grid. Infrastructure exists for three dimensions but the current implementation treats only two dimensions. Written in Fortran 90, FMG3D takes advantage of the recursive subroutine feature, dynamic memory allocation, and structured-programming constructs of that language. FMG3D supports multi-block grids with three types of block-to-block interfaces: periodic, C-zero, and C-infinity. For all three types, grid points must match at interfaces. For periodic and C-infinity types, derivatives of grid metrics must be continuous at interfaces. The available equation sets are as follows: scalar elliptic equations, scalar convection equations, and the pressure-Poisson formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible fluid. All the equation sets are implemented with nonzero forcing functions to enable the use of user-specified solutions to assist in verification and validation. The equations are solved with a full multigrid scheme using a full approximation scheme to converge the solution on each succeeding grid level. Restriction to the next coarser mesh uses direct injection for variables and full weighting for residual quantities; prolongation of the coarse grid correction from the coarse mesh to the fine mesh uses bilinear interpolation; and prolongation of the coarse grid solution uses bicubic interpolation.
