Thermally Enhanced Acidity for Regeneration of Carbon Dioxide Sorbent

The thermal regeneration of CO2 sorbent is the most energy-consuming step in the CO2-capturing process. Although the addition of an acid can induce CO2 release, it does not regenerate the sorbent because the acid forms a salt with the basic sorbent and diminishes its capability for capturing CO2. In this work, a novel approach based on thermally enhanced acidity was studied. This approach utilizes an additive that does not affect the sorbent at room temperature, but its acidity significantly increases at elevated temperatures, which assists the thermal release of CO2. M-cresol was added to an aqueous solution of morpholine. The CO2 capture and release of the mixture were compared to those of a control solution without m-cresol. The amounts of carbamate, bicarbonate, and unreacted morpholine were quantitatively determined using 1H NMR and weight analysis. The results showed that m-cresol did not affect the reactivity of morpholine in the formation of carbamate with CO2 at room temperature. At elevated temperatures, the acidity of m-cresol increased according to Van’t Hoff’s equation, which resulted in a significantly higher rate of CO2 release than that of the control. Given the low cost of m-cresol and its derivatives, this approach could lead to practical technology in the near future.

The seventh blind test of crystal structure prediction: structure generation methods

A seventh blind test of crystal structure prediction was organized by the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre featuring seven target systems of varying complexity: a silicon and iodine-containing molecule, a copper coordination complex, a near-rigid molecule, a cocrystal, a polymorphic small agrochemical, a highly flexible polymorphic drug candidate, and a polymorphic morpholine salt. In this first of two parts focusing on structure generation methods, many crystal structure prediction (CSP) methods performed well for the small but flexible agrochemical compound, successfully reproducing the experimentally observed crystal structures, while few groups were successful for the systems of higher complexity. A powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) assisted exercise demonstrated the use of CSP in successfully determining a crystal structure from a low-quality PXRD pattern. The use of CSP in the prediction of likely cocrystal stoichiometry was also explored, demonstrating multiple possible approaches. Crystallographic disorder emerged as an important theme throughout the test as both a challenge for analysis and a major achievement where two groups blindly predicted the existence of disorder for the first time. Additionally, large-scale comparisons of the sets of predicted crystal structures also showed that some methods yield sets that largely contain the same crystal structures.

Effect of leaving group on the oligomerization of 5'-AMP on montmorillonite

The oligomerization of imidazole derivative of 5'-AMP (ImpA) in the presence of montmorillonite clay yields oligomers containing up to 10 monomer units. In these reactions, the heterocyclic base, imidazole is the leaving group. In our present study, we synthesized a series of activated nucleotides of 5'AMP using other leaving groups such as pyrazole, 1,2,4-triazole, piperidine, morpholine, 4-aminopyridine, 4-methylaminopyridine, 4-dimethylaminopyridine, 2-aminobenzimidazole etc. to determine the effect of amine leaving group on the products of the oligomerization reaction. Earlier results from our laboratory showed that the presence AppA in the clay reaction of ImpA enhances the oligomerization reaction to yield higher oligomers. We also studied the effect of AppA in the clay mediated oligomerization reaction of the activated nucleotides. Oligomerization of 2-amino-benzimidazole derivative of 5'-AMP gave higher oligomers containing up to nine monomer units in the presence of AppA.

Effect of phosphate activating group on oligonucleotide formation on montmorillonite: the regioselective formation of 3',5'-linked oligoadenylates

The effects of amine structure on the montmorillonite-catalyzed oligomerization of the 5'-phosphoramidates of adenosine are investigated. 4-Aminopyridine derivatives yielded oligoadenylates as long as dodecamers with a regioselectivity for 3',5'-phosphodiester bond formation averaging 88%. Linear and cyclic oligomers are obtained and no A5'ppA-containing products are detected. Oligomers as long as the hexanucleotide are obtained using 2-aminobenzimidazole as the activating group. A predominance of pA2'pA is detected in the dimer fraction along with cyclic 3',5'-trimer; no A5'ppA-containing oligomers were detected. Little or no oligomer formation was observed when morpholine, piperidine, pyrazole, 1,2,4-triazole, and 2-pyridone are used as phosphate-activating groups. The effects of the structure of the phosphate activating group on the oligomer structure and chain lengths are discussed.

Large steric effect in the substitution reaction of amines with phosphoimidazolide-activated nucleosides

Aliphatic amines react with phosphoimidazolide-activated derivatives of guanosine and cytidine (ImpN) by replacing the imidazole group. The kinetics of reaction of guanosine 5'-phospho-2-methylimidazolide (2-MeImpG) with glycine ethyl ester, glycinamide, 2-methoxyethylamine, n-butylamine, morpholine, dimethylamine (Me2NH), ethylmethylamine (EtNHMe), diethylamine (Et2NH), pyrrolidine, and piperidine were determined in water at 37 degrees C. With primary amines, a plot of the logarithm of the rate constant for attack by the amine on the protonated substrate, log kSH(A), versus the pKa of the amine exhibits a good linear correlation with a Bronsted slope, beta nuc = 0.48. Most of the secondary amines tested react with slightly higher reactivity than primary amines of similar pKa. Interestingly, some secondary amines show substantially lower reactivity than might be expected: EtNHMe reacts about eight times, and Et2NH at least 100 times, more slowly than Me2NH although all three amines are of similar basicity. For comparison, the kinetics of reaction of guanosine 5'-phosphoimidazolide (ImpG) and cytidine 5'-phosphoimidazolide (ImpC) were determined with Me2NH, EtNHMe, and Et2NH, and similar results were obtained. These results establish that the increased steric hindrance observed with the successive addition of ethyl groups are not due to any special steric requirements imposed by the guanosine or the methyl on the 2-methylimidazole leaving group of 2-MeImpG. It is concluded that addition of ethyl and, perhaps, groups larger than ethyl dramatically increases the kinetic barrier for addition of aliphatic secondary amines to the P-N bond of ImpN. This study supports the observation that the primary amino groups on the natural polyamines are at least 2 orders of magnitude more reactive than the secondary amino groups in the reaction with ImpN.

Stabilization of pH in solid-matrix hydroponic systems

2-[N-morpholino]ethanesulfonic acid (MES) buffer or Amberlite DP-1 (cation-exchange resin beads) were used to stabilize substrate pH of passive-wicking, solid-matrix hydroponic systems in which small canopies of Brassica napus L. (CrGC 5-2, genome : ACaacc) were grown to maturity. Two concentrations of MES (5 or 10 mM) were included in Hoagland 1 nutrient solution. Alternatively, resin beads were incorporated into the 2 vermiculite : 1 perlite (v/v) growth medium at 6% or 12% of total substrate volume. Both strategies stabilized pH without toxic side effects on plants. Average seed yield rates for all four pH stabilization treatments (13.3 to 16.9 g m-2 day-1) were about double that of the control (8.2 g m-2 day-1), for which there was no attempt to buffer substrate pH. Both the highest canopy seed yield rate (16.9 g m-2 day-1) and the highest shoot harvest index (19.5%) occurred with the 6% resin bead treatment, even though the 10 mM MES and 12% bead treatments maintained pH within the narrowest limits. The pH stabilization methods tested did not significantly affect seed oil and protein contents.
