Using a life-cycle-cost criterion for multi-disciplinary design studies for the Manned Space Station

A life-cycle-cost measure for the Manned Space Station is suggested which considers the mass, initial cost, aerodynamic drag, electrical power, moment, required ground support, and expected life of subsystems or components. It is proposed that this life-cycle-cost measure be considered as a criterion for design trade-off studies involving controls and structures. Calculating the related sensitivities in the optimization process is discussed and then applied to specific examples. In the first example, the reaction control system is analyzed with regard to the design of its supporting structure and selection of rocket type. Values of support beam length, structural material selection, and rocket propellant selection are determined which minimize life-cycle-cost. In the second example, the alignment of solar arrays are analyzed for efficiency with regard to generating power, their drag, and their aerodynamic moment. Alignment angles are determined which again minimize life cycle cost. It seems clear from these and other examples that the proposed criterion has value for multi-disciplinary design studies for the Manned Space Station.

Development of a multi-disciplinary ERTS user program in the state of Ohio

The author has identified the following significant results. A preliminary comparison of the land use maps derived from high altitude photography and imagery generated from land use CCT's shows considerable correlation of data. Most land use features are best identified on LANDSAT data taken over a full year, showing the effects of the four seasons. It appears that the most cost effective and timely way of providing land use data is to use LANDSAT data for identifying 75 to 90 percent of land use categories, using temporal data. For surface mining, close examination of LANDSAT, Skylab, and aircraft data covering the same area where linears were found seems to indicate that the type of resolution characteristic of LANDSAT data results in a better definition of linears of one or more miles. Long line linears were found in the vicinity of known gas production areas in Ohio.

Development of a multi-disciplinary ERTS user program in the state of Ohio

The author has identified the following significant results. Although the analysis of the results of presently - used methodology has showed inadequate correlation between the land use change and the various socio-economic factors, a system of analysis was produced that will aid in the future work in this area pointing out the adequacy of the land use data for producing models of desired accuracy. This testing methodology is applicable to other LANDSAT/land use interpretation systems.

Development of a multi-disciplinary ERTS user program in the state of Ohio. Volume 1: Executive summary

The author has identified the following significant results. A current uniform land inventory was derived, in part, from LANDSAT data. The State has the ability to convert processed land information from LANDSAT to Ohio Capability Analysis Program (OCAP). The OCAP is a computer information and mapping system comprised of various programs used to digitally store, analyze, and display land capability information. More accurate processing of LANDSAT data could lead to reasonably accurate, useful land allocations models. It was feasible to use LANDSAT data to investigate minerals, pollution, land use, and resource inventory.

A multi-disciplinary approach to structural design for stochastic loads

The development of aircraft gust design techniques is reviewed with emphasis on those techniques applicable to large scale multidisciplinary closed-loop optimization methods. An overall view is presented of the optimization methodology utilized. An analysis is presented wherein the bivariate normal distribution function for a particular loading condition is considered. By use of maximization techniques, functions are derived for stress components along equal probability contours which allow for directionality and auto-correlation effects to be considered. These functions are then applied to the problem being considered and the effects on the structural sizing and weight penalties evaluated against more conventional methods.

Application of remote sensing to water resources problems

The following conclusions were reached concerning the applications of remote sensing to water resources problems: (1) Remote sensing methods provide the most practical method of obtaining data for many water resources problems; (2) the multi-disciplinary approach is essential to the effective application of remote sensing to water resource problems; (3) there is a correlation between the amount of suspended solids in an effluent discharged into a water body and reflected energy; (4) remote sensing provides for more effective and accurate monitoring, discovery and characterization of the mixing zone of effluent discharged into a receiving water body; and (5) it is possible to differentiate between blue and blue-green algae.

Manned Earth Observatory - Possible contributions towards enhanced understanding of the marine environment

The Manned Earth Observatory (MEO) study being conducted by TRW under the management of NASA/MSFC will establish the conceptual design of and the mission requirements for an Earth Observation Laboratory that will be flown on Shuttle missions beginning in 1980. MEO offers a variety of unique inroads to improving our understanding of the marine environment. The Shuttle-MEO is a valuable addition to a multi-level multi-disciplinary remote sensing program. The unique attributes of MEO are its experimental flexibility due to man-instrument interaction, its complimentary orbit (intermediate between nonorbital and high-orbital platforms), its high weight and volume capacity, and short duration missions.

Design considerations for on-orbit servicing

An overview of the general design of space vehicles serviced in orbit is presented. The basic space vehicle systems, subsystems, modules components, and associated appendages comprise the elements to be considered. Primary emphasis is given to the multi-disciplinary considerations in the development of requirements, and in particular, design of the space vehicle to facilitate orbital sevice by the extra-vehicular crew person(s).

Proceedings of a workshop: Multidisciplinary Use of the Very Long Baseline Array

The National Research Council organized a workshop to gather together experts in very long baseline interometry, astronomy, space navigation, general relativity and the earth sciences. The purpose of the workshop was to provide a forum for consideration of the various possible multi-disciplinary uses of the very long baseline array. Geophysical investigations received major attention. Geodesic uses of the very long baseline array were identified as were uses for fundamental astronomy investigations. Numerous specialized uses were identified.

NASA's Exobiology Program

The goal of NASA's Exobiology Program is to understand the origin, evolution, and distribution of life, and life-related molecules, on earth and throughout the universe. Emphasis is focused on determining how the rate and direction of these processes were affected by the chemical and physical environment of the evolving planet, as well as by planetary, solar, and astrophysical phenomena. This is accomplished by a multi-disciplinary program of research conducted by over 60 principal investigators in both NASA and university laboratories. Major program thrusts are in the following research areas: biogenic elements; chemical evolution; origin of life; organic geochemistry; evolution of higher life forms; solar system exploration; and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).

Earth observing system implementation

The Earth Observing System (EOS) is a planned major earth science program initiative using the Polar Platforms of the Space Station. The Polar Platform resource capabilities will allow a multi-disciplinary, long term mission life approach to future earth science measurements. The EOS will be the subject of an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) in 1986. The EOS concept and the planned implementation approach is outlined.
